Raumdeuter if Alonso was not the number 1 root cause of our issues last night, Conte would not prefer to play Pedro at left back for a good 30 minutes.
I know you like to play the devil's advocate and contrarian but stop to ponder this.
Pedro played left back for us last night for 30 minutes.
afrodoc2: Moses was the main culprit for the first goal. 1) He failed to react to his CBs movement thereby keeping both Alli and Kane onside. 2) After keeping them onside he was the only one that could see across the line and recognize the danger Alli posed coming from Azpi's blind side, yet he failed to react to that as well.
Nice observation doc, but you are looking at the end point. My main concern has been the origin of the chance in the first place. Afterall, if you don't concede the chance, you don't concede the goal right?
See below a chart of defensive stats for the last 13 weeks. You will notice that we are conceding more chances and crosses from the left. I'm not looking at Moses and asking why he didn't step up to nod the ball. No, I'm asking why both goals were conceded from crosess on Alonso's wing.
I'm asking why Diouf was able to cross for a Crouch tap in from that left wing last year. I'm asking why Man City very clearly targeted that left flank, and how Adama Traore was able to complete a league high of 12 successful take ons on that wing last season.
See an analysis of the second goal from F365 below
Chelsea actually started well after the break, Costa forcing a first save from Hugo Lloris, but Tottenham quickly regrouped. Walker passed to Eriksen, Eriksen crossed for Alli, Alli beat Courtois with a header. It was a carbon copy of the opener, but Tottenham will not care. They were 2-0 up.
Alli will rightfully take the plaudits for his match-winning goals, but Eriksen was the real difference on Wednesday. The Dane, just as Kevin De Bruyne did for Manchester City against Chelsea in December, exploited the Blues’ weaker left-hand side. Marcos Alonso is the poorer of the two wing-backs – although Rose gave Moses a torrid time on the other flank – while Cahill was constantly exposed. The freedom Conte gives Hazard has its obvious advantages, but it does leave Chelsea lopsided in defence. Lesser sides will be unable to take advantage; better ones might continue to follow this blueprint in the future.
The bolded is actually what scares me. We still have to play Liverpool, City, you guys and the gooners before the season is up. Is this going to be a trend for the future?
If Azpi and Moses step up there, then Alli and Kane are offside which is what Nateevs was pointing out.
Note that Luiz was marking Kane until he realises that Alonso has allowed Eriksen the ball. Luiz then steps up in an attempt to force Alli and Kane Offside.
I don't see how Luiz carries any blame for the goal at all.
nateevs: That's the tactical set up and nothing to do with Luiz.
Considering that Dele was playing on the left side of their attack, I don't expect our middle CB to be marking Dele. There would have been severe structural defensive consequences had we gone into the game like that.
Roland17: How do you step up to cover Alonso and lose sight of your responsibility? Cahil was too high, Matic bite too deep into Walker who already gave up the ball, the back line were horrendous at keeping Dele offside.
P.S: I am not saying Alonso is not without blame, however, the other culprits are just as responsible.
You're not saying anything that is new. Afterall, I also said that both Cahill and Matic were drawn out of position...the key question is WHY?
Why did the 2 players in front and behind Alonso feel that they had to come to his aid? Thr answer is the reason why we have a right winger playing left back for us now....Alonso is useless.
That cross was from a central position. The fullback has shown his man back into midfield which is his job.
If a cross comes in from a central position and a CB goes walkabout it is on the CB.
I wish I had a video of the clip to post here.
On both Occassions Alli is attacking Azpilicueta. Alli is taller than Azpi and better in the air. If Cahill stays compact then he can take Kane and Luiz takes Alli....but Cahill clearly feels he can't trust Alonso so he steps up, Luiz is forced to follow 6'4 Kane about and hope that Azpi can deal with Alli.
If Alonso could be trusted, none of that happens. Stop the cross, stop thr goal. Pedro is now playing left back because Alonso's ineptitude has been glaring.
Roland17: I think that is an unfair analysis of the goal. Alonso had his position well covered which forced K. Walker to give the ball, Matic got carried away and lost track of Erickson, who was his primary responsibility. Matic dug too deep into Walker, thus was late. Did you even notice how high Cahil was defending?
The back three were horrendous in keeping the line.
Both Matic and Cahill stepped up to cover Alonso who is a liability...
I hope you can see that Even Conte would rather play Pedro at Left Back instead of keeping that short 1 on the pitch...
pamcode: As soon as Alonso dropped and i saw Eriksen, i knew it was a cross and nod goal
Alonso is terrible and all his teammates know it.
Watch that ball again, both Cahill and Matic felt that they had to cover his porous ass which is why Eriksen saw space to cross, and Alli saw space for nodding
