Julian Assange is free. He left Belmarsh maximum security prison on the morning of 24 June, after having spent 1901 days there. He was granted bail by the High Court in London and was released at Stansted airport during the afternoon, where he boarded a plane and departed the UK.
This is the result of a global campaign that spanned grass-roots organisers, press freedom campaigners, legislators and leaders from across the political spectrum, all the way to the United Nations. This created the space for a long period of negotiations with the US Department of Justice, leading to a deal that has not yet been formally finalised. We will provide more information as soon as possible.
After more than five years in a 2x3 metre cell, isolated 23 hours a day, he will soon reunite with his wife Stella Assange, and their children, who have only known their father from behind bars.
WikiLeaks published groundbreaking stories of government corruption and human rights abuses, holding the powerful accountable for their actions. As editor-in-chief, Julian paid severely for these principles, and for the people's right to know.

A 15-year old student of Airforce Comprehensive School, Kaduna who is identified as Blaise Felix Aliyu was allegedly murdered by two Senior Secondary (SS3) students of the school in the dormitory within the Airforce Base in Mando, Kaduna.
LEADERSHIP gathered that late Felix, an orphan who lost his parents in 2013 left behind his twin brother who is a JSS2 student in same military boarding school.
Felix’s body has been deposited in the mortuary pending the conclusion of investigation to unravel the cause of his death.
The Nigerian Airforce, the owners of the school had not disclosed the identity of the victim or the cause of the his death, it however said thorough investigation is underway to unravel the actual cause of Felix’s death.
Spokesperson of the Nigeria Air Force (NAF), Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet in a statement on Saturday said, “The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, and indeed the entire NAF family are saddened by the painful and unfortunate incident of the untimely death of one of our students at Air Force Secondary School, Kaduna on 19 June 24”
“To avoid all sorts of speculations, a thorough investigation is currently ongoing to unravel how, why and what actually led to the death of the victim. Rest assured that this matter is receiving the utmost urgency it deserves, and we won’t rest until it is unraveled,” the statement said.
Our correspondent who spoke with one of the officials at the Airforce Base who pleaded anonymity, corroborated the statement that the incident happened on June 19, 2024.
The official narrated that two SS3 students of the institution invited the victim to their room to punish him, but ended killing him.
”What I gathered was that two SS3 students who just finished their WAEC and were waiting for NECO examination invited Felix Aliyu who is an Assistant Headboy to one of their rooms to punish him.
“According to findings, these two students tortured him with electric iron till he died in their hands. First, we heard that the victim was ironing clothes and he was electrocuted, but we later gathered that it was not so. It was a case of murder. I learnt the two SS3 students suspected to be behind the act were arrested.”
When contacted, one of the relatives of the victim who did not want her name in print, confirmed the incident but said she was not in a position to talk to the press.
However, the unidentified chairman of the school’s Parents Teachers Association (PTA) who posted on the PTA WhatsApp platform said the late Felix died as a result of being punished by a Senior Secondary School 3 student.
The PTA Chairman said the suspected senior student did an illegal electricity connection in the room where the deceased student had a contact with the iron bed while being punished for an undisclosed offence when he got electrocuted and eventually died.
Efforts to speak with the Kaduna State Police Command over the incident were not successful.

Only three months after FIJ exposed XpressVerify, a private website selling the Nigerian identification data, private website AnyVerify has been found trading Nigerian bank verification numbers (BVNs), among other sensitive citizen data.
Paradigm Initiative (PIN), an ICT for Development and Digital Rights group, said on Thursday that it was seeking legal redress on behalf of Nigerians for a breach of data privacy rights.
Vindich Legal, the legal partners of Paradigm Initiative, have served a pre-action notice to the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF).
The lawyers want Nigeria’s federal government to make:
A Declaration that the act of unauthorised access to the data of Nigerian citizens by AnyVerify.com.ng and commercialization of the same violates the provision of Section 37 of the Constitution Of The Federal Republic Of Nigeria 1999 (CFRN).
A Declaration that by virtue of Section 30 And Section 39 Of The Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) 2023, all involved agencies of government have a duty to implement appropriate technical and organisational measures to ensure the security and integrity of citizens’ sensitive personal data.
An Order of court mandating a full investigation and publication of the investigative report regarding the personal data breach occasioned by the data leak to AnyVerify.com.ng and its customers by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
An Order of the court directing all involved agencies of government to release official information to the public regarding the activities of their agents and sub-licensees. An Order of court directing the involved agencies of government to provide restitution in form of compensation to data subjects who have been affected by the data leak. “Following the XpressVerify incident, further research was undertaken, and it was discovered that another actor tagged AnyVerify.com.ng has been operating in the digital space of Nigeria since November 2023,” PIN stated on Thursday.
“From our research, AnyVerify.com.ng is a website involved in the commercial distribution of personal and private data of Nigerians. On its webpage, a drop-down displaying the myriads of data services which the website renders can be observed. These include personal data such as the National Identity Number (NIN), the Bank Verification Number (BVN), a virtual NIN, Driving License, International Passport, Company details, Tax Identification Number (TIN), Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC) and Phone Numbers.
“All these are sold by this website to any interested party for the sum of N100.00 (One Hundred Naira Only) for each data request. This website was visited five hundred and sixty-seven thousand, nine hundred and ninety (567,990) times in February 2024 and one hundred and eighty-eight thousand, three hundred and sixty (188,360) times in April 2024.”
Semrush showed that AnyVerify was in the top 3400 websites in Nigeria; it received at least 68,000 visits in May.
After FIJ’s exposé in March, NIMC informed the public that XpressVerify was not one of its licensed partners. AnyVerify is also not acknowledged on NIMC’s website as a licensed partner.
FIJ called NDPC and NIMC on Friday, but the phone calls were not answered. This reporter also sent text messages and emails, which the agencies had not responded to at press time.
NIMC has not shared a list of the commission’s licensed partners yet. FIJ has requested for it.
ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — Jihadi fighters who had long operated in Africa’s volatile Sahel region have settled in northwestern Nigeria after crossing from neighboring Benin, a report said Wednesday, the latest trend in the militants’ movements to wealthier West African coastal nations.
The extremists believed to be linked to al-Qaida have in the last year crossed over from Benin’s hard-hit northern region and settled in Kainji Lake National Park, one of Nigeria’s largest, where other armed groups have also gained access, according to the report by the Clingendael Institute think tank, which has done extensive research in the Sahel.
Residents close to the park told The Associated Press that the facility, which holds one of West Africa’s fast-declining lion populations, has been closed for more than a year because of security threats from armed groups attacking neighboring villages and roads.
“Before, it was like a tourism center (but) now, people find it difficult to pass through there,” said John Yerima, who lives near the park in New Bussa town. “You cannot enter that road (leading to the park) now. It is dangerous, seriously.”
The security situation at the 5,300-square kilometer (2,000-square mile) park in Niger state and along the nearby border with Benin is “getting out of hand” and is “a much more explosive situation than we had anticipated,” said Kars de Bruijne, one of the authors of the report and a senior research fellow at the institute.
The “sustained presence” of the armed groups in the park is the first sign of a connection between Nigeria’s homegrown extremists that have launched a decadelong insurgency in its northern region, and al-Qaida-linked militants from the Sahel, the vast arid expanse south of the Sahara Desert, Bruijne said.
Their presence offers an opportunity for the extremists to claim large-scale success in both countries, already wracked by deadly attacks in recent years, he added.
Known as a global hot spot for violent extremism, the Sahel region’s worsening security crisis comes as military coups are toppling democratic governments. As the military governments struggle to contain the violence, they are increasingly severing security with traditional partners France and the United States and turning to Russia for support.
In northwest Nigeria, security analysts have in the past warned that the region’s remote territories, where the government is largely absent but have rich mineral resources and high poverty levels, present an opportunity for expansion for jihadi groups that had operated mainly in the Sahel, as well as the Islamic State group, whose fighters hold sway in the Lake Chad basin.
“A link between Lake Chad and the Sahel is a major opportunity for al-Qaida and the Islamic State to boast about their profiles as leaders of global jihad,” the report said.
There are also concerns from conservationists that the presence of armed groups in the park could further threaten the remaining lions whose populations have declined as a result of poaching and climate change. They say the park and most protected wildlife areas in Nigeria are poorly patrolled, making them easy targets for armed groups.
“The security situation has become top of the list when it comes to the concerns about the lion populations in Nigeria,” said Stella Egbe, senior conservation manager at the Nigerian Conservation Foundation.
The Nigerian military often conducts aerial bombardments and deploys its personnel in criminal hideouts in the conflict-battered northern region. However, security forces — fatigued by the decadelong war in the northeast — are still outnumbered and outgunned in those remote villages, and the root causes of the conflict such as poverty remain.
The Clingendael report said it is unclear what the motive of the Sahel extremists in the park is and what their relationship with other armed groups there will be. Security analysts say it offers opportunities for logistics and more influence amid booming illegal trade across the porous border.
“The Sahelian jihadis potentially can try to use northwestern Nigeria as a place for fundraising, for logistics and to try to influence the jihadi groups there as part of their own competition,” said James Barnett, a fellow at the Hudson Institute whose works in northwestern Nigeria were cited in the report.
Across many villages in Nigeria’s northwest, banditry — not jihadi fighters — remains the major security threat, Barnett said.
The bandits have on a few occasions in the past collaborated with jihadi fighters as two separate groups in carrying out attacks. But even in rare collaborations, he said, there can be “very deadly consequences.”
Four Kwara Hajj Pilgrims Have Died in Saudi Arabia. Their names are: 1 Saliu Mohammed 2 Hawawu Mohammed 3 Ayishat Ologele 4 Salman Alade
Two additional pilgrims from Kwara State, Salman Alade and Ayishat Ologele, have reportedly died while on pilgrimage in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.
The pilgrims were among the thousands of Nigerians who travelled to the holy land to perform the Hajj pilgrimage.
Their deaths followed that of two other pilgrims, Saliu Mohammed, who arrived with the third batch of the state contingent, and Hawawu Mohammed, which were reported in Madinah.
The latest report took the death toll among the Kwara pilgrims to four.
Ologele, it was gathered, fell ill while travelling from Medina to Mecca and died afterwards, while Alade fell ill in Mecca and passed away as well.
While the exact causes of their deaths had not been officially confirmed, it was believed that they died of natural causes.
The development was confirmed by the Kwara State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board in Saudi Arabia.
The board commiserated with the families of two pilgrims as the Executive Secretary, Abdulsalam Abdulkadir, expressed condolences to the families, asking Allah to grant them comfort and forgive the deceased.
The Federal Government, on Tuesday, announced the addition of 17 deep offshore oil blocks to the 2024 Licensing Round for oil fields in Nigeria.
Recall that some deep offshore blocks were recently put on offer for the 2022/23 mini-bid round and other blocks which cut across onshore, continental shelf and deep offshore terrains were also put on offer for the Nigeria 2024 Licencing Round.
Precisely on May 8, the government invited investors to bid for 12 oil blocks and seven deep offshore assets in the 2024 marginal fields bid round.
Also on June 12, 2024, it was reported that the Federal government had increased the number of oil blocks on offer in the 2024 marginal bid round.
The Chief Executive Officer, Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, Gbenga Komolafe, disclosed this at the pre-bid conference for the 2024 licencing round in Lagos.
Providing updates on the 2022/2023 and 2024 licencing rounds, Komolafe, in a statement he signed and issued in Abuja on Tuesday, said 17 deep offshore blocks have been added to the 2024 Licensing Round.
He said, “In pursuit of the commission’s commitment to derive value from the country’s abundant oil and gas reserves and increase production, the commission has been working assiduously with multi-client companies to undertake more exploratory activities to acquire more data to foster and encourage further investment in the Nigerian upstream sector.
“As a result of additional data acquired in respect of deep offshore blocks, the commission has added 17 deep offshore blocks to the 2024 Licensing Round. Further details on the blocks can be found on the bid portal.”
Komolafe further stated that “by the published guidelines, we had earlier indicated that some of the assets on offer should be applied for as clusters, namely: PPL 300-CS & PPL 301-CS, PPL 2000 and PPL 2001. Bidders are hereby advised that they may, at their option, bid for those blocks as clusters or as single units.”
For clarification, he said bidders should refer to the Frequently Asked Questions Sections of the 2022/23 and 2024 Licensing Round portals, or contact the upstream regulatory agency.
The NUPRC boss also stated that to allow interested investors to take advantage of the expanded opportunities, the 2024 Licencing Round schedule had been amended.
He said, “Registration/submission of pre-qualification documents which was initially scheduled to close on June 25, 2024, has been extended by 10 days and will now close on July 5, 2024.
“Data access/data purchase/evaluation/bid preparation and submission which was initially scheduled to open on July 4, 2024, and close on 29/11/24 will now start on July 8, 2024, and close on 29/11/24 as previously scheduled.
“All other dates in the published 2024 licencing round schedule remain the same unless otherwise communicated.”
He stated that to vacate entry barriers, the commission had sought and obtained the approval of President Bola Tinubu, who, as petroleum minister, approved attractive fiscal regimes and also minimised entry fees for both licencing rounds by putting a cap on the signature bonus payable for the award of the acreages.
“Consequently, it is necessary to ensure that the same bid criteria (in addition to the uniform signature bonus criteria) are applicable for both licencing rounds, to promote transparency and provide a level playing ground for all bidders.
“Since the criteria for the award of the oil blocks are now much more attractive than they initially were during the 2022/23 Mini Bid Round, it is in the interest of equity and fair play to give all investors the same opportunity to bid for the assets,” Komolafe stated.
Based on this, he declared that all blocks in the 2022/23 and 2024 Licencing Rounds were now available to all interested investors the websites developed for the exercise by the NUPRC, adding that the 2022/23 Mini Bid Round registration phase had been reopened to new applicants.
“The public is therefore invited to take advantage of this development and attractive entry terms and conditions and participate in the exercise.
“However, all the pre-qualified applicants published on the 2022/23 Mini Bid Round portal will not be required to go through a new pre-qualification process, as their technical submissions remain valid and eligible even for the 2024 Licencing Round.
“They may, however, wish to re-submit new commercial bids to take advantage of the more attractive criteria applicable to both licencing rounds and revise their bid bonds to adapt to the new bid criteria. They are also free to bid for blocks on offer in the 2024 Licencing Round,” Komolafe stated.

Viral video: Man chooses ₦10m over Adeboye’s prayer
A yet-to-be identified man has chosen ₦10 million over prayers from the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christain Church of God (RCCG) Enoch Adeboye.
In the now-viral TikTok video on Monday, June 17, the man, who was asked whether he would prefer N10m or a personal prayer from Pastor Adeboye, said he would choose the money over the prayer from the man of God.
His response however sparked conversations online, as netizens share their thoughts.
Armed assailants on Friday seized Mohamed Fouani of electronic distributor Fouani Group, as well as at least two others, during a deadly ambush in Ikoyi, Lagos, according to sources familiar with the development.
Police spokesman Benjamin Hundeyin told Peoples Gazette he was not yet briefed on the attack Saturday afternoon but maintained an investigation had already commenced to unravel the situation. Multiple sources with information said it occurred near Falomo Bridge.
Fouani Group, run by Mohamed Fouani and other prominent Lebanese businesspeople, is the major distributor of LG and Hisense products in Nigeria. The company itself has yet to issue a statement on the incident.
Sources said the abductors had contacted people near the victims for a ransom of $1.5 million. The Gazette was unable to independently authenticate this demand or whether or not it came from the abductors.
A Lagos police source said the incident would likely unnerve the command, which had hitherto boasted of its capacity to keep kidnap-for-ransom activities low across the state even as they spread in other parts of the country.
Most expatriates and diplomats in Nigeria are based in Lagos, especially in the highbrow Ikoyi neighbourhood, where security had long been assumed to be above frequent breaches by motivated assailants.

The Federal Inland Revenue Service says it is dropping the tax charges against Tigran Gambaryan, Binance’s head of financial crime compliance.
TheCable understands that the charges were dropped on June 14.
Confirming the development, Dare Adekanmbi, the agency’s spokesperson, said the federal government “is dropping charges against the two individuals sued along with the cryptocurrency firm, Binance”.
“Please note that the charges are being dropped against the second and the third defendants in the matter,” he added.
Speaking in a statement on Friday, Binance said the development illustrates that Gambaryan is not a decision-maker at the cryptocurrency firm.
“We are relieved that the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has served and filed amended charges today, resulting in tax charges against Tigran Gambaryan being dropped,” the statement reads.
“Further illustrating that Tigran is not a decision-maker at Binance and does not need to be held in order for Binance to resolve issues with the Nigerian government.
“We await the court’s ruling on this, discharging Tigran from this matter completely.”
Binance also commended the FIRS for their diligence and professionalism throughout this process.
The company said the situation unequivocally demonstrates its commitment to resolving the issue with the government transparently and cooperatively.
Gambaryan and Nadeem Anjarwalla, Binance’s regional manager for Africa; were detained by the Nigerian authorities on February 28.
Although Anjarwalla escaped from the custody of the office of the national security adviser (ONSA), both executives, alongside Binance, were charged by the federal government for tax evasion and money laundering.
On March 25, FIRS filed a criminal charge against Binance for “tax evasion”.
According to the service, the move was to uphold fiscal responsibility and safeguard the economic integrity of the country.
The lawsuit, designated as suit number FHC/ABJ/CR/115/2024, was said to “implicate Binance with a four-count tax evasion accusation”.
On May 17, the FIRS filed an amended four-count charge against Binance Holdings Limited and its executive, Gambaryan, on alleged tax evasion.
The matter drew the attention of lawmakers in the United States who accused the Nigerian government of taking Gambaryan, “hostage”.
In response, the federal government said due processes were being applied in the ongoing trial of Binance.
Nigeria has recorded 65 confirmed cases of Cholera with 30 deaths from 1 January to 11 June across 96 local governments in 30 states, says the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC).
NCDC revealed this in a public health advisory published Thursday to alert the public of the increasing trend of cholera cases across the country as the rainy season intensifies.
This follows a reported outbreak in Lagos State which resulted in about 60 hospital admissions and five deaths in 48 hours.
According to the NCDC, a total of 1,141 suspected cases have been recorded in 2024. Ten states contributed 90 per cent of the total number.
The states are Bayelsa, Zamfara, Abia, Cross River, Bauchi, Delta, Katsina, Imo, Nasarawa and Lagos.
About Cholera, treatment
Cholera is a highly contagious food and water-borne disease. It spreads through direct transmission by eating or drinking contaminated food or water, and indirect transmission due to poor sanitation and lack of handwashing.
Symptoms of cholera include acute, painless watery diarrhoea of sudden onset, with or without vomiting. It may be associated with nausea, profuse vomiting and fever.
According to the NCDC, severe cases can lead to death within hours due to dehydration, however, about 80 per cent of people may only show mild symptoms or have no symptoms at all.
NCDC noted that the disease is easily treatable if detected early and most infected people can be treated successfully through prompt administration of oral rehydration solution (ORS), to replace lost fluids and electrolytes, and appropriate antibiotics.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, will reduce its office space in Lagos after global layoffs in mid-2023 affected its Nigerian team. At least 35 people were affected by those layoffs, three people with knowledge of the matter said. The company’s engineering team, which had 24 employees according to a 2022 report, was laid off.
“Engineers continue to serve the region from a number of our global engineering hubs outside of Nigeria,” a company spokesperson told TechCabal via email, declining to specify how many Nigerian employees were affected by 2023 layoffs that reduced global headcount by 20,000.
The reduction in team size has prompted the social media giant to begin renegotiating its tenancy agreement for its office space in the 15-story Kings Tower building in Ikoyi, Lagos. A key part of that renegotiation will be to reduce its office space. Per one publication, Kings Tower has an asking price of $800/sqm/per annum.
“We regularly review our office spaces to ensure they suit the needs of the business, and the office in Nigeria is no different,” Meta said in a statement.
“As we shrink our real estate footprint, we’re transitioning to desk sharing for people who already spend most of their time outside the office.”
While Meta rejects any characterisation of the decision as scaling back, it is a remarkable about-face for a company that has consistently invested in Nigeria and has spoken about prioritising the West African nation.
In March 2024, Nick Clegg, Meta’s President of Global Affairs visited Nigeria and announced the company would begin offering monetisation to creators in Q3 2024. During his visit, he spoke about the recognition Nigerian creators have garnered globally and their use of Meta’s platforms to build communities. Per Statista data, there are an estimated 43 million Facebook users in Nigeria.
Yet, it is difficult to measure if these numbers have translated into meaningful revenue growth. The company reports Africa revenue as part of its “Rest of World” cohort.
Meta is not the only big tech company to make operational changes in Nigeria. Microsoft closed the African Development Centre and cut at least 100 engineering jobs in May 2024. While the company insists it remains operational in Nigeria, it picked Kenya for a multi-billion dollar investment in data centers.
