FamilyLearn How To Make Isi-ewu (goat Head Meat Soup) At Home by nobosaba(op): 12:28pm On Sep 22, 2015
Let me take you away with this post from the noise and drama between Sen. President and the CCT.

I have never for once come to agree with myself on which part of Nigeria has the best soups especially considering the array of soups that are peculiar among the Easterners and the South southerners. You will agree with me that it is a tough competition between these groups of people. While I ponder about this in my small apartment, a female friend who came visiting had a cooler of Isi-Ewu with her.

As I ate a plate of the meaty soup, I could not but ask for more and I felt it would be nice to get the recipe from her and share with you on this platform. Isi- Ewu is made from goat head and I bet a bite will surely convince you to eat more.

How To Cook (Prepare) Isi-ewu (Goat Head Soup)

Here are the ingredients that you need with instructions to prepare your own Isi-ewu at home. Follow the recipe/guide step by step and you are sure to make a delicious pot of Isi-ewu.

The Ingredients For Isi-Ewu

One goat head
2 big Onions bulbs,
2-3 roasted calabash nutmeg,
4 pieces of habenero peppers (Ata rodo),
2 meat flavour seasoning cubes and salt to taste.
20cl or 200ml of Palm oil
Enough water to cook the meat
Tyme, curry and potash (Kaun)
Ground crayfish and sliced Utazi leaves
Note: The utazi leaf is included to add some bitter flavour to the Isi-Ewu while potash (kaun) is added to make the palm oil curdle up.

Pre-Cooking Step In Making Isi-Ewu

Get your goat head chopped into smaller pieces. This could be done by the meat sellers. Wash the entire meat pieces properly using foam and iron sponge to remove dirt particularly in the ears and tongue part. Keep aside.
Wash and slice the fresh utazi leaves into tiny pieces just like you would do for your vegetables and set aside.
Soak a tea spoon of potash or kaun in small amount of water, let it dissolve well and sieve the water; then set aside the water.
Peel, wash and slice one onion bulb into ring forms and set aside.
Blend the other onion bulb and pepper into pasty form. Add only little amount of water if you must blend. It is better if you can pound them. Set aside.

Main Cooking Steps (Instructions)

Place the goat meat pieces into a large pot and place on a cooker
Pour a little amount of water just enough to cook the meat. This is because there is no need for stock water. Add the two cube seasonings, a tea spoon each of thyme and curry. Cook for about 20 minutes.
Add salt and let it simmer for another 10 minutes. When the meat pieces are tender enough, set aside.
In another pot, add palm oil, pour the sieved water of the potash slowly into the pot containing palm oil and stir using a wooden spatula until the oil turns completely yellow.
Add two table spoons of crayfish and stir.
Add the grounded (Ehu seeds) calabash nut meg, grounded or blended onions and pepper (to taste) and less than a handful of sliced utazi leaves. Stir properly.
Pour the cooked goat head meat pieces into this mixture and stir well.
Place on cooker and let it simmer for few minutes under low heat until it is piping hot. Do not forget to cover the pot during the cooking process.
Your Isi Ewu is ready to be served!

In many Nigerian restaurants, Isi Ewu is served in a calabash or some wooden material with a sprinkle of small quantity of onion rings and some slices of fresh Utazi leaves on it. This makes it very native and colourful. I bet you will love it. In less than 1hour, you should be done with the entire process of making this native meal.

I sincerely hope you will find this recipe helpful.
Good luck

HealthEarly Warning Signs/symptom Of A Heart Attack by nobosaba(op): 12:00pm On Sep 22, 2015
Many people think that heart attacks are a “man’s problem,” yet heart disease is actually the number one killer of both men and women in the United States. In men, the risk for heart attack increases significantly after the age of 45. In women, heart attacks are more likely to occur in the years after menopause (usually, after the age of 50). However, younger men and women can also have heart attacks.

Besides age, factors that increase the risk for heart attack are:

A previous heart attack or procedure to open up the coronary arteries
Family history of early heart disease:
–Father or brother diagnosed before age 55

–Mother or sister diagnosed before age 65

Diabetes mellitus
High blood cholesterol
High blood pressure
Cigarette smoking
Overweight
Physical inactivity

The problem is that many people who are at risk of having a heart attack are not even aware of the stress they are putting on their body. A heart attack happens when there is a buildup of plaque in your arteries

Here is a list of the 6 most common symptoms you should look out for:

1. COLD SWEATS AND DIZZINESS
Due to the poor circulation your brain will not get the proper blood flow it needs to operate appropriately. This is a sign that you are in extreme danger, and you should seek medical attention immediately.

2. CHEST PRESSURE
This is one of the most noticeable signs of them all. This pressure is a clear sign that an attack is near. Many people also ignore this pressure, claiming that it’s nothing or that it’s normal, but it’s not. Get checked out immediately if you are experiencing pressure.

3. WEAKNESS
Turning out to be progressively frail is another perilous sign that you may show some kindness assault. This is on account of you supply routes have kept on narrowing. This doesn’t permit the best possible blood stream all through the body.

4. COLD AND FLU SYMPTOMS
Many people have recorded developing cold and flu like symptoms right before an attack happens. These are very scary signs, and once again contact your doctor immediately.

5. FATIGUE
On the off chance that you are feeling drained and languid all the time it could be an outcome in the loss of blood stream to your heart. This happens when there is a development of plaque in your corridors, the same supply routes that convey blood to and from the heart.

6. SHORTNESS OF BREATH
Due to the loss of blood flow your lungs are going to suffer as well. When not enough blood gets to your lungs you will not be able to take in enough air, which is related to shortness of breath. If you are having trouble breathing you should contact your doctor immediately, this is a very bad sign.

If you experience any of the above symptoms of a heart attack you must get yourself up and to the doctor. After all, the best way to prevent a heart attack is to catch wind of the symptoms before it happens. Do whatever it is you can to ensure you have good cardiovascular health; it could be the difference between life and death.
Good luck

Christianity EtcThanksgiving Or Thanksliving by nobosaba(op): 8:40am On Sep 17, 2015
Thanksgiving has always been for me a time to be thankful for all the blessings in my life.

But how do we live thanksgiving?
I found the answer to that question in an article written by Wilferd A. Peterson called, The Art of Thanksgiving. In this article he talks about acts of thanksliving. To quote from this piece, Mr Peterson writes:

"The art of thanksgiving is thanksliving. It is gratitude in action. It is applying Albert Schweitzer's philosophy: 'In gratitude for your own good fortune you must render in return some sacrifice of your life for the other life."

Examples From The Article of Thanksliving

- By living your life triumphantly

- By being grateful for all who have helped you by you doing things for others

- By striving to make others happy

- By helping to be an inspiration to others

- By living each day to the fullest

- By using your talents and obligations to be invested for the common good

- By facing the challenges of life as a challenge for achievement

- By enjoying what you have and sharing it with others

To Summarize
Thanksgiving is a time to be thankful for all we have, but thanksliving is a way of life that if implemented could improve the quality of life not only for you and me, but for others. Do you live in a thanks giving way?

There are thousands upon thousands of people worldwide that would gladly give up their life to trade with you for your life, a life full of opportunity that just doesn’t exist in their world. Each one of these people desperately want a new life where they can live in peace, can work, can feed their families, can bring medical care to their children, can see new life where people are respected and valued and simply not seen as a scourge upon the government.

Those of us who are fortunate enough to be born into a country where freedom is guaranteed, where schooling is given and not a dream, where one can move from place to place without fear of being arrested or tortured, or shot dead. We who complain so often are the same ones that have more than can only be imagined by millions of others. We who take for granted what we see and do everyday always wanting more without even the slightest thought that we should have to pay for it or work for it.

The simple things we should be thankful for we ignore, the simple pleasures we take advantage of we just assume will always be there.
HealthBeware! Killer Adulterated Palm Oil Is Sold In Markets by nobosaba(op): 9:28pm On Sep 14, 2015
Palm oil is a major vegetable oil that is used in many soups and meals especially in West African countries. In fact, I doubt if there is any home in Nigeria that does not include palm oil in any of their daily meals. This clearly shows the importance of the oil in the diets of an average Nigerian.

With the sudden rise in cases of cancer, organ damages and heart diseases with no specific cause, it has become very important for Nigerians to pay particular attention on the quality of palm oil to be used in their diets considering the current trend. It has now come to our notice that many unscrupulous elements, in their quest to make more money, have colluded with producers and marketers of this oil to add some inedible substances or chemicals that could make palm oil appear like the unadulterated one.

I recently read an article that described the arrowing experience of a group of friends who ate leafy vegetable popularly called Efo riro by the Yorubas prepared with palm oil and all of them purged seriously until they were admitted to the hospital. The friends were quick to say it was the vegetable but a further test carried out indicated a trace of some certain chemicals. These chemicals are those used in the production of adulterated palm oil.

The expertise put to use in the production of this oil has made it practically impossible to physically differentiate between a good palm oil and the fake. Many consumers look for redness before buying their palm oil. Of course, that is one major attribute of the oil. In fact, in some climes, it is called red oil. Having known this, these criminals use a chemical called solvent red 24 (Used in colouring plastics) as an additive to improve the redness and make the oil appear like the properly made palm oil. Another dye used to achieve this result is Anatol dye.

Often times, It will surprise you to know that these improperly made bottles or kegs of oils are more expensive than the properly made ones as consumers tend to rush them unknowingly.

It is to my greatest surprise that the law enforcement agency such as NAFDAC had not done enough in recent years to clamp down the perpetrators of this evil act that had left a major food item like palm oil which is suppose to supply Vitamin A for proper nourishment our body to a food item supplying lethal toxins.

You will do yourself and family a great good, if you do have a trusted source where you can buy palm oil that had been properly produced rather than just buy from any seller. Also, one could trust packaged or company made palm oil as standardization must have been adheres to. Prevention certainly is better than cure.

I sincerely hope this article is helpful.

HealthWhat Is A Pilonidal Sinus, What Causes Them And What Are The Symptoms Of Pilonid by nobosaba(op): 8:52am On Aug 21, 2015
A pilonidal sinus is a small pit that occurs at the bottom of the tailbone or coccyx that can become infected and filled with pus. Pilonidal means a ‘nest of hairs’.

Sinus tract is a abnormal narrow tunnel in the body which goes between a focus of infection in deeper tissues to the skin surface. This channel discharges pus occasionally on the skin,

Pilonidal tract is a sinus tract which contains hairs. It appears under the skin between the buttocks (the natal cleft) a short distance above the back passage (anus). It goes in a vertical direction between the buttocks.

However, in some rare cases, pilonidal sinus can appear in other parts of the body.

What causes a pilonidal sinus?
There are no clear reasons for the incidence of pilonidal sinus, Some theories say that people were born with this minor abnormality between the buttocks. Therefore, it can be inherited. In this condition, the hairs grow into the skin rather than outwards.

Another theory says that pilonidal sinus occurs due to the development of skin dimples in the skin between the buttocks. Presumably, they develop as a result of local pressure which damages the hair follicles. Growing hair in the natal cleft may get pushed into the skin pits because of local pressure.

Once hair fragments become ‘stuck’ in the skin they irritate it and cause inflammation. Inflamed skin quickly becomes infected and so a recurring or persistent infection tends to develop in the affected area. This kind of infection causes the sinus to develop which often contains broken pieces of hair.

Who gets pilonidal sinus?
Certain factors increase the risk of developing the condition and include:

A job involving a lot of sitting (a sedentary occupation)
Being overweight (obesity)
A previous persistent irritation or injury to the affected area
Having a hairy, deep natal cleft
A family history of the condition
What are the symptoms of pilonidal sinus?
Rapid-onset (acute) symptoms
The patient notices increasing discomfort and swelling over a number of days and the pain may be severe by the time of presentation. On examination there is a localised fluctuant swelling in the midline of the natal cleft with overlying cellulitis. The area is exquisitely painful to touch and often simply the act of separating the buttocks to examine the area is intolerable for the patient.

Persistent (chronic) symptoms
This is common for patients to present with chronic pain and discharge, often with a history of up to two years. On examination a single, or occasionally, multiple sinuses may be seen. Tufts of hair or other debris, such as clothing fibres, are often visible arising from the sinus. Localised edema, swelling and inflammation may be present masking the underlying sinus.

What is the treatment for pilonidal sinus?
If you have no symptoms
If you have no symptoms then you should clear the affected area of hairs by shaving or other means of hair removal. Also, keep the area clean with proper personal hygiene.

If you have rapid-onset (acute) symptoms
If you have an infection then you should take antibiotics. Painkillers (such as paracetamol and/or ibuprofen) may be very helpful to relieve the pain. Maybe you will need to have an emergency operation to puncture (incise) and drain the ball of pus with surrounding skin infection (abscess).

3. If you have persistent (chronic) symptoms
Generally, an operation is recommended.. The options include the following:

Wide excision and healing by secondary intention. This operation consists of cutting out the sinus but also cutting out a wide margin of skin which surrounds the sinus. The wound is left open to heal by natural healing processes (healing by ‘secondary intention’). This usually requires several weeks of regular dressing changes until it heals completely. The advantage of this method is that all inflamed tissue is removed and the chance of the condition coming back (recurrence) is low.

Excision and primary closure. This means removing the section of skin which contains the sinus. This is done by cutting out an oval-shaped (ellipse) flap of skin either side of the sinus, which takes out the sinus, and stitching together the two sides of the ellipse. After this the wound heals very The risk of a recurrence or of developing a wound infection after the operation is higher than the above procedure.

A plastic surgery technique. Sometimes, when the sinus recurs or is extensive, plastic surgery may be advised to remove the sinus and refashion the nearby skin.

After any operation
Surgeons recommend keeping the area free of hair growing by shaving regularly, or by other methods to remove the hair. This prevents the coming back (recurring) of the problem.

PoliticsOpinion: Economic Of Poverty by nobosaba(op): 9:30pm On Aug 16, 2015
I want to accept like everybody else that Nigeria is broke. Even Mr President said so. The concern in every economic discuss is how the government can generate enough revenue to carry out its campaign promises. A lot of people are suggesting increase in VAT and other taxes etc. It is on this that I want to make my usual controversial analogy.

Let us take our mind back to our various villages, which are typically closed economy with minimal external influence. In this my village there is a crop farmer, cattle farmer, fish farmer, teacher, tailor, cobbler, blacksmith, laundry man and a craftsman. Every month, the craftsman makes a beautiful crafts which he takes to the city to sell at the rate of N1,000.00. When he comes back, he would ration the N1,000.00 he made for foodstuff of N200, meat of N200.00, fish N100, pay his children school fees N100, buy shoe N200 and pay for the maintenance of his instrument N200. Ask yourself, what actually determine what the prices he pays for those items? It is what he has. Right?

The fish man equally sold fish to the all the households and in return pay to collect their foodstuff, shoes, clothes, maintenance and education for his children. This applies to every households in the village. Can you imagine the value of services and exchange that that N1,000.00 was doing in the village? It is possible for that N1,000.00 to have generated over N100,000.00 worth of exchange. Eventually, the N1,000.00 got to the hand of the tailor who had to go to the city to buy clothing material. He came back with the materials and started sewing. The artisan took his crafts to the city but there was no buyer. The artisan came back to the village with his crafts but without money. The tailor finish sewing but there is no money for his customers to come and collect their clothes. He in turn cannot get his foodstuff, fish or pay his children school fees because he has not receive payment for his work. What do you think would be the implication of this? Now if there is no money in the village, the implication is that all the workers are not likely to be able to exchange their surpluses for what they need and businesses will crumble. Please note that it is not only the artisan that is working. It is just that it is only the artisan whose product has external values. However, if the artisan fails to sell his product, all the villagers would be punished for this; does it make sense at all?

That is exactly how the CBN is running Nigeria, every months the CBN, just like that artisan, exchange our crude oil for dollars. But we equally have farmers, teachers, builders, construction workers, doctors, etc who are also engaged in adding value to the economy. The CBN has been unable to quantify the contributions of the people whose products are strictly for local consumption.

This is why our informal sector is far bigger than the formal sector because the money in circulation cannot pay for all these services. Then the CBN converts the dollars earned from selling crude oil to our own Naira and give it to us for the payments of every other worker. Then, periodically, it collects back the naira from the tailors/businessmen in exchange for the dollars so that they can import items to the economy. The Naira is then trapped in the CBN vaults until we earned dollars from crude oil. Now that buyers are not interested in our oil, should every other business be suspended because there is no dollars to be converted to naira to pay for them? What are all the naira it collected through sales of dollars and liquidity mopped up kept in its vaults why we are looking to borrow more dollars that would be converted to naira before we can pay our workers? This is crazy, it is voluntary enslavement, isn’t it? The people are working, but there is no money to pay them with simply because the white man refuses to buy our oil!!! What sort of economic sense is that? The Nigerian economy must be reflated. It doesn’t matter whether we are printing new money or the CBN is bringing out money trapped in its vaults.

Everybody has accepted the fallacies that our economy is dependent on oil. But is that right? Does it mean that all the above village workers are not contributing to the economy simply because their products are consumed internally?

The entire economy of that village has to be regulated by the N1,000.00 the artisan earned. That N1,000.00 determines prices of the foodstuff, fish, clothing, teaching and everything the villagers have to pay for. Any attempt to tax any of them will only shrink the economy further, wouldn’t it?

Years
1 = 2000 × 12 = 24000 + 12% interest rate which is 2400 that is = 26400

Year 2
Account balance is 26400, so + the 2000 × 12 which is 24000, now this is the trick, you + the balance of last year with this year which is 26400 + 24000 = 50400, now you add the 12% interest rate. The 12%interest rate of 50400 is = 5033.3 so we add both which is 50400 + 5033.3 = 55433.3

You do that continuesly to the 20years and you get the answer.

When many of us go to the market or grocery stores to buy our Milk, we buy based on the brands that we like and do not take nutrition into consideration most times. Many of us have the impression that milk is milk and do not know that different manufacturers pack different types of milk for sale. Maybe if we understand that the different milks are not the same in composition and hence have different effect on our health, you would consider looking at that milk container when next you hit the grocery store.

If you have ever bothered to check the containers/labels of milk, I am sure you would have come across terms such as skim or skimmed milk and full cream milk or simply cream milk. They mean different thing and thus have slightly different taste (if you can sense that) and different health benefits.

The Differences Between Skimmed Milk & Full Cream Milk

Okay, let me start by giving a short description of milk. It is a whitish nutritious liquid secreted by the mammary gland of mammals and has a lot of health benefits. All mammals produce milk; however, the most common milk sold commercially is that of the cow. In some parts of the world, milk from sheep and goats are consumed and sold.

Full Cream Milk vs Skimmed Milk

1. Major Difference Between Skimmed Milk & Cream Milk

The full cream milk, also known as whole milk is the milk in the form we get them from animals while skimmed milk is whole milk from dairy cows that has had most of or all of its fat removed. So, if you are looking to burn down fat, you may not want to add to it by consuming more of whole milk.

2. Saturated Fat Contained In Skimmed Milk and Cream Milk

A typical full cream milk would normally contain around 5 grammes of saturated fat per one-cup serving. This is 20 percent of the daily limit. Now consider that you may also eat other fatty foods such as cheese, butter, coconut oil and other foods rich in saturated fat in a single day. This makes it easy for you to overshoot 25 grams per day.

3. Nutritional Composition of roughly 236ml serving of milk

Full cream milk;

Protein: 7.9 g
Carbohydrates: 11 g
Calcium: 276.1 mg
Potassium: 349 mg
Cholesterol: 24 mg
Sodium: 98 mg

Same volume of skim milk:

Protein: 8.7 g
Carbohydrates: 12.3 g
Calcium: 349 mg
Potassium: 419 mg
Cholesterol: 5 mg
Sodium: 130 mg

4. Vitamin Composition of the 2 Milks

Some people prefer to take skimmed milk because it does not contain fat but what they don’t know is that, unlike full cream milk which contains both water soluble and fat soluble vitamins, skimmed milk lacks the fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K). This is because the Vitamins have been skimmed alongside with the fat during the production process. It’s simple, they are only soluble in fat, so they are dissolved in the fat. What happens when the fat is removed? The vitamins are removed too.

In conclusion, what you want from milk determines the type of milk that you choose when next you go shopping for milk. By the way, cream milk tastes better than skimmed milk. #JustSaying
