Travel / Nigeria Loses Revenue From Aviation As Ghana Leads by NoreenUG(f): 9:27am On Aug 26, 2016
Nigeria has lost its status as the aviation hub in West Africa to Ghana, a neighbouring country.

Already, the revenue that accrued to Nigeria from the fuelling of aircraft and accommodation of cabin crews of foreign airlines has been taken over by Ghana, which now provides these services.

The situation is partly attributable to the 100 per cent increase in the price of aviation fuel in Nigeria, while Ghana slashed the same product by 20 per cent.

Besides, regulatory agencies like the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) are losing revenue.
The price of Aviation Turbine Kerosene (ATK), also called aviation fuel or Jet-A1, rose from N120 some months ago to N240 per litre since the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) introduced the flexible foreign exchange policy.

Aviation fuel is 100 per cent imported, which subjects it to the vagaries of foreign exchange, especially the United States dollar. With the exchange rate around N350 to $1, aviation fuel in Nigeria has become one of the most expensive on the continent.

Due to the price increase, coupled with irregular supply of the product, foreign airlines experienced difficulties refuelling during their trips. For instance, Emirates Airline, which recently reduced its two daily flights from Lagos to just one, last week made a re-route to Ghana, to buy fuel for its Abuja-Dubai flight.

It was learnt that Nigeria’s customer of many decades, British Airways, had started buying fuel from Ghana to power its airplane carrying Nigerian passengers to the United Kingdom.

Air France last week announced that from 2017, it would commence three weekly flights to Accra in Ghana from Paris-Charles de Gaulle. These flights will be operated by Airbus A330 with a capacity of 208 seats until 27 March 2017, then by Boeing 777-200 with 312 seats.

Sources told The Guardian that Ghana had become the new bride of the foreign airlines due to efforts by the government of that country to make the Kotoka International Airport in Accra, the aviation hub for West Africa.

A source, who is one of the facilitators that negotiated the 20 per cent cut on aviation fuel in Ghana, said the West African neighbour might have succeeded in beating Nigeria to being the regional hub for international airlines.

He said unlike Nigeria, Ghana already had a robust connectivity plan in place, which opened the country’s airspace to African and international carriers with so much reciprocity.

“What they have done with the fuel price cut is to further attract the airlines to Accra,” the source said. Aviation fuel is central to the operations of an airline as it constitutes between 35 and 40 per cent of business cost.

“Fuel in Ghana used to be one of the most expensive with government tax being one of the main factors for the cost. But with the support of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), and the airport authority in Ghana, we made proposals to the government to take off the 20 per cent tax accruing to government to make Ghana more competitive.

That was what they did. Their fuel is now on the same level with that of Ivory Coast, which is their biggest rival, and even lesser than what we have in Nigeria.”

Commenting on the implications, the Executive Secretary, Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria (MOMAN), Obafemi Olawore, said that besides the loss of revenue, the development was bad for the country’s image.

Olawore reckoned that the development could have been avoided if the Federal Government had given the oil marketers the needed assistance, like forex, to facilitate the import of aviation fuel and sell in the country at affordable prices.

He said MOMAN was in talks with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) for weeks to provide them forex at interbank market rate. “Nevertheless, we are continuing with our private arrangements to bring in the product (Jet-A1). Between this week and the next, we are expecting 40 million litres of aviation fuel. By the time that arrives and NNPC also brings in its own, things will start looking up. Those airlines that have gone will start coming back to Nigeria. Because it is easier to refuel in Nigeria than elsewhere,” Olawore said.
Industry watchers noted that unless such optimism becomes reality, regulatory agencies like NCAA, FAAN and NAMA that have been complaining of low revenue may face more hardship amid Federal Government’s demand for improved turnover.

The agencies are currently moving to retrieve the over N30 billion from domestic airlines indebted to them in the last 16 years.

This is hogwash. Venezuela was in economic crisis long before Nigeria - this article dates back to 2013. The attempt to excuse the shambolic policy ineptitude that has worsened our economic problems by comparing us to Venezuela is a sorry display of boneheaded propaganda. A cursory look on the internet will show that Venezuela's recession predate the recent collapse in oil prices:

However, I am not undermining the achievement of our football team. They had a phenomenal achievement which has to be recognized.
Yes, we failed in many other events. No fault of the athletes. Especially track and field where we used to win medals in the past

Meeeen, the thing was a flop!

I was almost moved to tears when I saw our athletes BEGGING for money on Twitter after the Sports Ministry neglected them.

I was completely embarrassed when I heard about the hand our athletes were dealt in Atlanta (ref: Hotel payments and being stranded with no flight).

The last straw was when I watched them at the opening ceremony with TRACKSUITS because somebody failed at his responsibilities.

It was at that point that I realized the Sports Ministry did NOT deserve any victories, and I prayed the Nigerian athletes would DEFECT to countries that would appreciate and treat them better.
I will keep saying it: Incompetence should NOT be rewarded.

Well, that's water under the bridge.

PS: Did you know that 15 Nigerians featured for other countries this year, and that 11 out of those 15 athletes won medals for their respective countries?

Damn.

Why

Guys, it is for our own good that Nigeria crashes out empty-handed.
With the shoddy preparations and utter neglect by the people in charge, we should pray Nigeria loses out completely so as to send a message... That you can ONLY win by investing in our people!

It would be criminal if immbeciiles like Dalung are given a chance toi shine with a Bronze cup after the mess and embarrassment he and his pack of numbskulls have brought us.
Many of our athletes went for days without eating! They went for days without their kits and even some were humiliated at their hotel over lack of payment. Why doesn't anybody want to take blame for that mess?

Do you know the narrative our thieving leaders would spin at the next Olympics if we should end up winning bronze here after the shoddy preparations?

"After all, back in Rio2016, even after diverting money meant for our Olympic team and leaving them penniless, we still won Bronze. I'm sure they wouldn't mind us neglecting them again this year".

INCOMPETENCE MUST NEVER BE REWARDED!!! DOING SO WOULD HEIGHTEN THE IMPUNITY!

NIGERIA MUST CRASH OUT EMPTY-HANDED FOR OUR OWN GOOD!

WHEN YOU DON'T INVEST IN YOUR PEOPLE, DON'T EXPECT RESULTS!

Of the participating countries at this year's Olympic games, Kenya is currently in the Top 20 (16th Position), and is Africa's number 1 star country, leading the African winners' table with 5 GOLDS and 5 SILVERS, making it a total of 10 solid medals.

Coming in at 2nd Place is South Africa with 9 medals.
Ethiopia comes in at 3rd Position with 6 medals, and Ivory Coast and Algeria occupy 4th and 5th positions each.

Let's congratulate these guys for actually succeeding and understanding that victory comes from preparation and not empty "hope".

Shameless for putting the country in this terrible situation. I could careless about APC or whatever C, PDP is the cause of our present predicament, and causes have effects -- we are living the effect.

You can't pull billions of dollars from the country's coffers into you and your cronies' pockets, coupled with massive infrastructural deficits, and expect everything to go on as if nothing happened!

Mister, you are hurling platitudes.

The cold, bitter fact remains that NO INDEX you can pull out today would place the Buhari administration above the Jonathan administration. NOT ONE AT ALL.

PDP is corrupt but all through their 16 years, the Nigerian GDP recorded a steady POSITIVE GROWTH. Buhari's administration is the FIRST time the country is recording a negative GDP growth since Nigeria retuurned to democracy.

PDP is corrupt but their recruitment exercises were FAIR and OPEN to children of the common man. APC's government has taken us back to the dark days of nepotism where secret recruitments were done to favour children of public officials.

PDP is corrupt but they battled and defeated Polio. The foolish APC government has seen its return.

PDP is corrupt but Jonathan's administration saw Nigeria record a Foreign Portfolio Investment base of $693million in the FIRST quarter of 2015. That FPI has currently fallen to a MISERABLE $90.3million this year. Osinbajo admitted this with his own mouth. You want me to give you links?

Do a side-by-side comparison of Jonathan's ministers with Buhari's ministers and tell me you will not end up embarrassed.

Yeah, PDP had lots of vices; but APC is a definite DOWNGRADE in ALL FACETS.

Don't you think it does, have you heard of the word urban migration, how many times do they catch Boko haram Terrorist in Lagos state, How many times do boko haram issue threat to attack Lagos, how many times do militants issue threats to attack Lagos...Lagos witness the highest number of migration than any other city in Nigeria....considering the size of Lagos and the population progression.....that makes it inhabitable in their indices, How stable is Lagos compared to the cities they ranked....is there any emergency number that is working in Lagos if it does how often and rapid respond to attend to emergencies, can you call police by 2am and they got to the scene within reach, what about the street numbering system are they easily accessible for security agents to get to the site of incidence,How many air surveillance mechanism do Lagos have apart from 3 expired choppers bought from Caverton and 1 air ambulance to accommodate over 22millions in Lagos, How conducive is kirikri prison, How many health care facilities do we have in Lagos if any are they affordable to about 80% of the population which are lower and middle class people, all ex convict in other states are taking Lagos as their safe haven, ....Bros think about all these and thank them later for giving you a yard stick for improvement rather than criticizing their index

GBAM!
You have to understand that most Nigerians are INCREDIBLY ignorant because majority haven't stepped foot outside the country to experience how things really should work in a serious-minded society.
Can you believe that many Nairalanders' understanding of "infrastructure" is posting pictures of city aerial views without elaborating on how things work?

Does Lagos have a truly independent local government system? Can the mayors map out budgets, raise funds, embark on projects, and make decisions on their own without being appendages and EMPLOYEES of the state government?
Do Lagosians even DRINK or use the water from the Lagos City Waterboard? Does the Lagos City Waterboard EVEN adequately supply water to transverse the length and breadth of the area under its administrative jurisdiction?
A city of 22 MILLION people has no FACKING subway system of its own in the 21st century!!!

I live in Columbus, Ohio; a city of just around 850,000 people, but all these facilities are present: railways, road networks with subterranean water pipes, decent and well planned markets, CITY police (not even STATE police oh!) and on top of that, a network of primary and secondary schools that are CONTROLLED by the CITY (NOT EVEN STATE!).

But you see many Nigerians come out here and make noise about the gutter they live in while PRAISING their oppressors (politicians) for PATCHING up a road.

Infrastructural decay isn't even Nigeria's biggest problem.
The sycophancy, ignorance and moral wretchedness of its GOVERNED class, are the country's biggest foes.

Many bigots would miss this part

Lagos scored highest in culture and environment, followed by infrastructure. It scored lowest in stability.

Actually, it is you who tragically misses the point.
What they mean by that is that, out of the indices in which Lagos was scored, it was in culture and infrastructure that it got its highest scores, NOT that it scored highest among those other countries.

Let me elaborate. Supposing you sit for a JAMB exam of 4 subjects (English, Maths, Physics, Chemistry) with 100 questions for each of those subjects (for a total JAMB score of 400), and your scores end up like this:

English - 16
Maths - 29
Physics 35
Chemistry - 11
Meaning a JAMB score of 91/400.

With a pathetic result like that, it can be deduced that you scored your highest at Physics, followed by Mathematics, but scored your lowest at Chemistry. That doesn't mean you emerged the overall best Physics candidate and also ranked overall 2nd best Mathematics candidate. It JUST means those were the subjects you got your highest scores.
It doesn't change the fact that you're an epic failure. And you also still won't be gaining admission into any university with that type of score.

Simple English comprehension.
