micson:
Please is there any Nigerian living in Nigeria that is currently working in amazon mechanical turk?
I have worked with them for 3 weeks now and my earnings are paid through gift card, the gift card code is not given but my earnings reflected the amount.
But the customer care says that i can only use the money there to order for an item. Is there any other way out please?

Hello,

I have been working on that site since 2010, although I have not done any job this year. I have been busy with freelancing, web design and affiliate marketing. As a Nigerian, you can only spend your earnings by buying from the Amazon store. I don't know if this has changed. However, U.S. residents and citizens are allowed to transfer their earnings to a bank account.

Travel / "Could You Spend 17 Hours On A Plane?" by ntp1: 1:46am On Apr 12, 2017
Qantas announces the world’s longest direct flight

Australian airline Qantas has announced plans for the world’s longest commercial flight.

Beginning in March 2018, passengers will be able to fly non-stop from London to Perth in Australia. At 14,498 kilometres long, the journey is expected to take around 17 hours. The flight will be operated using the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.

In 1947, when Qantas launched its pioneering Kangaroo route, the flight from Sydney to London took four days. There were nine stops along the way. The Lockheed Constellation 749 aircraft carried 29 passengers and 11 crew members. To modern air travellers, a four-day itinerary is the stuff of economy-class nightmares. But before the kangaroo route, getting from Australia to the UK was likely to involve six weeks at sea on a ship.

A transformational route

Australian minister for trade, tourism and investment, Steven Ciobo, praised the announcement, saying it would transform Perth Airport into a hub for passengers from the Australian East Coast, creating more jobs in the area.

Ciobo also hopes that the new route would boost tourism in the region. According to the minister, 660,000 people travelled from Britain to Australia in 2015, spending an estimated $3.7 billion. A daily service would create 86,000 additional seats between London and Perth every year. The tourism sector is extremely important to the Australian economy. It’s currently growing three times faster than the rest of the national economy, and has created around 580,000 jobs.

The CEO of Qantas, Alan Joyce, was also extremely positive about the benefits of the new route. "It's great news for travellers because it will make it easier to get to London,” he said. “It's great news for western Australia because it will bring jobs and tourism. And it's great news for the nation, because it will bring us closer to one of our biggest trade partners and sources of visitors."

At present, the longest non-stop commercial flight is operated by Emirates Airlines. The route between Dubai and Auckland in New Zealand covers 14,200km in 16.5 hours. The new Qantas service would exceed that by nearly 300km, allowing the airline to regain the crown as operator of the world’s longest flight.

Career / Being Ignored? How To Get Busy People To Respond To Your Email by ntp1: 1:36am On Apr 12, 2017
Busy people have little time to read, let alone respond to, email. If you want your email to stand out and get a response, you must write it with care. This is your opportunity to be heard and engage with someone you respect or admire. Make it count. Here are ten tips to help you get busy people to respond to your email and start a conversation:

1. Write a catchy title.

Is your email click-worthy? It depends on the subject or title of your email. A recipient is more likely to read an email entitled, “In NYC tomorrow (March 14): Available?” than “Hi.” You do not have to exaggerate or be over the top. (Language that is larger-than-life can sometimes be mistaken as spam.) Show specificity and immediacy.

2. Mention something you have in common.

A great way to connect with someone you do not know is to highlight something you have in common with the other person. It helps to develop an emotional connection. Are you both alums of Colgate University? Did you both live in Baltimore at one point? Do you have a mutual friend? If you see on their LinkedIn profile that you have something in common, point it out.

3. Reference positive, recent news connected with the person.

If positive news about the person prompted you to write the email, mention it. You could say, “Congrats on your award.” Acknowledging a recent win of theirs makes them feel good and lets the person know you have an interest in their work.

4. Be concise, and write short paragraphs.

It is exciting to engage with someone you respect or admire. But don’t let your excitement cause you to be verbose. For emails, follow the rule of three: Try to stick to three sentences or three lines of text per paragraph and no more than three paragraphs.

5. Use bullet points.

If you want to share multiple pieces of information, make it easy for the recipient to digest. Use bullet points and phrases. Parse the information out so you don’t loose the reader.

Health / "Born To Sleep Less." by ntp1: 1:23am On Apr 12, 2017
Not sleeping? You might be part of a genetic elite

It was a fact widely known that Margaret Thatcher could get by on only four hours’ sleep a night.

And just like the former British prime minister, some high-profile business leaders also claim to do their best work on only the briefest of shut-eye. Jack Dorsey, who is CEO of both Twitter and the payments company Square, said recently: “I don’t sleep much, but it’s enough.”

So why is it that some people can be productive and energetic despite getting less sleep than everyone else?

'Efficient sleepers'

A recent report published by the University of California, San Francisco says that it’s all down to our genes.

The study looked at a group of people who are able to survive – and even thrive – on barely any sleep, and found that members of this group had something in common: a mutation in a gene called DEC2.

People with this gene mutation "were born to need less sleep”, Dr Ying-Hui Fu, neuroscience professor and author of the study, told CBS San Francisco. “They feel energetic and awake even after only a few hours’ sleep.” It means they can often hold down more than one job and still maintain good mental health, she explained.

She described them as “efficient sleepers”, because “whatever our brain needs to do in our eight hours for you and me, it can be done in four hours in these people.”

One of the participants in the study described her ability to sleep as a gift. “My day is longer than most people’s; I can get more things done,” she said.

The gene mutation is rare: less than 1% of us are estimated to have it.

The findings could lead to a drug being developed that mimics the mutated gene. As the professor explains: “Some day that’s a real possibility. If we can understand what makes these people sleep more efficiently, we can come up with some idea of how to safely regulate our sleep effect through drug development.”

But that would be at least 10-15 years away, she added.

Why most of us need more sleep

In a recent study, less than a fifth of young people around the world reported getting enough sleep, a deficiency that can be dangerous for the health and also affect academic achievement and productivity.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, adults should aim for seven or more hours a night.

Pets / She Slept With Her Snake And Then The Vet Told Her Something Shocking by ntp1: 10:02pm On Mar 29, 2017
This is a true story about a woman from India who lived in the Middle Ages and had a pet snake, python, which she loved so much. The snake was 4 meters long and looked healthy. However, one day her unusual pet just stopped eating.

This lack of appetite in the snake continued over a few weeks. The desperate woman tried everything she could and offered anything that a snake would like to strangle and eat. Nothing worked, and finally the woman took her loving pet to the veterinarian as a last resort.

The vet listened to the woman carefully and asked, “Does your snake sleep with you at night, wrap around you closely and spread out throughout its length?”

The woman was surprised and with a lot of hope she said, “Yes! Yes! It does it every day and it makes me so sad because I see something asking of me, and I cannot help it feel better.”

Then, the vet said something shocking and most unexpected. “Madam, your pet is not sick; it is just preparing to eat you.” Yes, the python wasn’t sick but it has been preparing to eat her instead!

“Every time, it is creeping and “hugging” you, wrapping around your body, it is checking size to weigh how a great meal you are and how it must be prepared before the attack. And yes, it does not eat, in order to have enough space to digest you more easily,” the vet said.

This story comes with a moral – Even people close to you, whom you are very affectionate with, can, have mean intentions. You need to identify the snake around you and their true intent. Hugs and kisses are not always honest.

Don’t fear the enemy that attacks you, but the fake friend that hugs you

Webmasters / 5 Things You Should Never Post On Facebook by ntp1: 9:51pm On Mar 29, 2017
Facebook has become the Google of social networks. If you're not updating your status right now, chances are that you are uploading photos or taking some sort of odd quiz. We post tons of intimate details about our lives that we normally wouldn't share with anyone. We think that as long as we make sure our privacy settings are set correctly that we are safe and snug within our circle of friends.

The problem is that we never know who's really looking at our information.

Our friend's account could have been hacked when they installed some rogue application, or their creepy uncle might be using their account because they forgot to log out. For the sake of the safety of you and your family, there is some information that you should never post on Facebook. Here are 5 things you should consider removing or not posting to Facebook and/or other social networks.

1. You or Your Family's Full Birth Dates

We all love getting “happy birthdays” from our friends on our Facebook wall. It makes us feel all warm inside knowing that people remembered and cared enough to write us a short note on our special day. The problem is when you list your birthday you are providing identity thieves with one of the 3 or 4 pieces of personal information that is needed to steal your identity. It’s best to not list the date at all, but if you must, at least leave out the year. Your real friends should know this info anyway.

2. Your Relationship Status

Whether you are in a relationship or not, it may be best not to make it public knowledge. Stalkers would love to know that you just became newly single. If you change your status to "single" it gives them the green light they were looking for to resume stalking now that you're back on the market.

It also lets them know that you might be home alone since your significant other is no longer around. Your best bet is to just leave this blank on your profile.

3. Your Current Location

There are a lot of people who love the location tagging feature on Facebook that allows them to let people know where they are 24/7. The problem is that you have just told everyone that you're on vacation (and not at your house). If you add how long your trip is then thieves know exactly how much time they have to rob you. My advice is not to provide your location at all. You can always upload your vacation pictures when you get home or text your friends to let them know how jealous they should be that you're sipping an umbrella drink while they toil away at work.

4. The Fact That You Are Home Alone

It is extremely important that parents make sure their children never put the fact that they are home alone in their status. Again, you wouldn’t walk into a room of strangers and tell them you are going to be all alone at your house so don’t do it on Facebook either.

We may think that only our friends have access to our status, but we really have no idea who is reading it. Your friend may have had their account hacked or someone could be reading over their shoulder at the library.

The best rule of thumb is not to put anything in your profile or status that you wouldn’t want a stranger to know. You may have the most stringent privacy settings possible, but if your friend’s account gets compromised than those settings go out the window.

5. Pictures of Your Kids Tagged With Their Names

We love our kids. We would do anything to keep them safe, but most people post hundreds of tagged pictures and videos of their kids to Facebook without even giving it a second thought. We even go so far as to replace our profile pictures with that of our children.

Probably 9 out of 10 parents posted their child’s full name, and exact date and time of birth while they were still in the hospital after delivery.

We post pictures of our kids and tag them and their friends, siblings, and other relatives. This kind of information could be used by predators to lure your child. They could use your child’s name and the names of their relatives and friends to build trust and convince them that they are not really a stranger because they know detailed information that allows them to build a rapport with your child.

If you must post pictures of your children then you should at least remove personally identifying information such as their full names and birth dates. Untag them in pictures. Your real friends know their names anyway.

I would be a hypocrite if I said that I have completely removed all tagged pictures of my kids on facebook. It is a daunting task given the amount of pictures that we take as proud parents, but I have started on it and I'll do a little bit each day until it's finished.

Lastly, think twice before you tag pictures of the children of friends and relatives. They might not want you tagging their kids for the reasons mentioned above. You can send them a link to the pictures and they can tag themselves in place of their children if they want to.

Webmasters / Facebook Unveils New In-app Camera, Direct Feature; Rolls Out Stories... by ntp1: 9:37pm On Mar 29, 2017
Facebook is making camera the primary focus in its smartphone app with the launch of its new in-app camera. The social media giant has rolled out Facebook Stories for everyone and a new Direct feature as well.

Facebook app for iOS and Android will now have a camera icon on the top left starting this week, one that will allow users to take pictures or videos and superimpose them with masks, filters and frames. Users can also swipe right from the NewsFeed to launch camera app.

Facebook’s new camera app is heavily inspired from Snapchat’s camera, which offers filters and masks for both front and rear camera.

“Reactive effects let you interact with dynamic objects — like falling snow — and style effects apply an artistic filter to your video in real time, letting you turn your everyday selfie into a Picasso-style work of art,” Facebook said in a blog post.

Facebook has partnered with brands to create masks for upcoming movies such as Alien: Covenant, Despicable Me 3, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Power Rangers, and Smurfs: The Lost Village and Wonder Woman. Plus, Facebook’s camera app will feature guest art from visual artists like Douglas Coupland and Hattie Stewart.

Facebook Stories
Facebook Stories is now rolling out for everyone. Facebook app, just like Instagram, will now have small round circles on top of NewsFeed with user’s profile photos for Stories. Facebook Stories will let users share multiple photos and videos, which disappear in 24 hours. Facebook Stories won’t appear on a user’s Timeline or News Feed unless they post them there, too.

Just tap on “Your Story” icon in the Stories bar at the top of News Feed to add a new Story.

Facebook Direct
Facebook Direct will allow users to share individual photos and videos with specific friends for a limited time. Users can send a photo or a video to a friend who’ll only be able to view it once and replay it or reply. “Once the conversation on the photo or video ends, the content is no longer visible in Direct,” Facebook’s blog post reads.

Facebook will keep updating filters and masks for users.
