Tons and tons of scientific studies have been done on this very subject, that shows very strong corrolations between Religion, atheism and IQ levels.
Very intelligent people with high IQ tend to be more skeptical and rational, and therefore more impervious to religious indoctrination.

Brain anatomy shows that the religious experience, the religious Impulse emanates in a certain region of the brain,. the same region that coincidentally houses the primitive irrational Impulses.
Now, the other half of the brain houses or generates the more recently evolved rational Impulses. This is the seat of reason.

If on the other hand, one grows up with a dominant rational part of the brain, such person would tend to be rational, inquisitive, logical, show healthy skeptism, Always in control, good at pattern recognition, independent. When boosted with education, the person would most likely secretly or publicly question religious beliefs that had been spoonfed to him/her from childhood.

Studies and studies have shown that the latter tend to have a higher IQ than the former.

CONCLUSION
The bible says be careful for false prophets and doctrines. Most Christians think that this only applies to Pastors and Teachers within the church.
Apostle Paul clearly says it applies to those outside the church (who have departed from the faith). Check and you will see that a lot of Atheists did depart from the Church.
