Foreign Affairs / Kids Targeted As Israeli Troops Attack Important Mi'raj Celebration by nurudeen181(m): 5:22am On Mar 01, 2022 |
Israeli security forces have attacked Palestinians who gathered at
the Old City of al-Quds to celebrate a Muslim holiday, injuring
dozens of people including two children.
A six-month-old baby and a child with special healthcare needs were
injured overnight, the latter after being struck in the face with a stun
canister fired by Israeli troops.
The attack came as Palestinians gathered at Bab al-Amoud, also
known as Damascus Gate, to celebrate the Muslim holiday of Isra
and Mi'raj which marks the night Allah took Prophet Muhammad
(Peace upon Him) on a journey from Mecca to al-Quds and then to
heaven.
Thousands of Palestinians observed the important occasion with
worship at al-Aqsa Mosque. It is almost one month before the start
of the holy fast month of Ramadan.
Israeli forces intensified their presence and deployed heavily in Bab
al-Amoud and the surrounding streets in preparation for an attack.
According to the Palestine Red Crescent Society, the number of
injured in the clashes in the flashpoint neighborhood of Sheikh
Jarrah and Bab al-Amoud has reached 36 people.
In the occupied West Bank, Israeli troops raided Jenin refugee camp
and shot dead a young Palestinian man. Local media identified him
as Abdullah al-Hasri, a former prisoner held by Israel.
Abdullah al-Hasri was a former prisoner held by Israel.
Earlier Monday, Islamic Jihad head Ziyad al-Nakhalah called on
Palestinian fighters to defend al-Quds and al-Aqsa Mosque against
rising attacks by extremist Jewish settlers.
Speaking at a ceremony entitled “Resistance is the path to liberation”
in Gaza City, Nakhalah said Israeli demolition of Palestinian homes
and killing of innocent people require resistance fighters not to
hesitate for a moment in fighting the Israeli enemy.
"It is a duty to engage Israeli military forces anywhere in the
occupied West Bank, and disempower them," he said.
Nakhalah reiterated his group's firm stance that the only pather
before the Palestinian nation is resistance.
Meanwhile, more than 220 scholars and academics from 14 Latin
American countries denounced Israeli oppression and domination of
Palestinians, stating that Tel Aviv must be branded as an apartheid
regime.
The scholars pledged in a joint statement that they would not
participate in any academic exchanges with Israeli institutions, and
would decline funding from Israel. |

Foreign Affairs / Ukraine Invasion: Misleading Claims Continue To Go Viral by nurudeen181(m): 8:00pm On Feb 28, 2022 |
A woman who was injured by Russian shelling became the subject
of conspiracy theories and false claims online
Five days into the Russian invasion of Ukraine, false or misleading
videos and images about the invasion continue to go viral.
Among the things spreading quickly are old videos being depicted as
current - along with claims that pictures such as the one above are
old, even when they verifiably come from the present conflict.
We've been looking into some of the most viral claims.
False 'crisis actor' claims
Claims have circulated online that images and clips from the
destruction of a residential building in Chuhuiv, in eastern Ukraine,
on Thursday are instead from a 2018 gas explosion in the Russian
city of Magnitogorsk. Some also claimed that an image showing a
bloodied woman at the scene was from 2018 or that she was a
"crisis actor" - someone hired to act out scenes from an attack.
These claims - made by a variety of pro-Russia and conspiracy-
themed accounts - are false.
Suggestions that pictures of a woman injured in Chuhuiv are from
a 2018 gas explosion in Russia are wrong
Although at first glance they may bear a superficial resemblance,
images from the gas explosion in Magnitogorsk in 2018 do not
correspond with images from Thursday's fire in Kharkiv.
Early on Thursday, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine posted on
Facebook saying they had been informed of "enemy fire" resulting in
the death of one child and several other injuries. A journalist at the
scene posted a video showing the aftermath of the fire, and other
sources including photographers at the scene posted images from
the same event onto social media.
A comparison of the two incidents shows the difference between
the Chuhuiv attack and the 2018 gas explosion in Russia
Two photographers took images of the woman, and some of these
photos appeared on websites and newspaper front pages all around
the world over the weekend. Both photographers confirmed that the
images were taken on 24 February - a fact further confirmed by
metadata from the images which shows the same creation date.
Young girl confronting soldier is not
Ukrainian
However, other photos and videos posted in recent days don't show
what some people say they are depicting.
A blurry video claiming to show a Ukrainian girl confronting a
Russian soldier has generated 12 million views on TikTok and nearly
one million views on Twitter.
But it actually shows Palestinian girl Ahed Tamimi , aged 11 at the
time, confronting an Israeli soldier after her older brother was
arrested in 2012.
Twitter has labelled the video "out of context", but it continues to
rack up views on TikTok.
An old video of a Palestinian young girl confronting an Israeli
soldier has gone viral
Molotov cocktail fight in Kyiv
Different versions of a video claiming to show Kyiv residents fighting
Russian motorised infantry with Molotov cocktails went viral on
multiple platforms over the weekend.
It led many users to believe it showed clashes between Ukrainian
citizens and Russian forces, and was shared by two British MPs.
Ukraine conflict: Many misleading images shared online
Ukraine conflict: Further false images shared online
This video of a Molotov cocktail fight in Kyiv was taken during
Euromaidan protests in 2014
But the video is old. It was taken during the Euromaidan protests in
2014 , which led to the toppling of Ukraine's then-president, Viktor
Yanukovych.
Video game clip goes viral
A dramatic video appearing to show a Ukrainian pilot shooting down
a Russian fighter jet was tweeted by Nexta TV, a Belarussian outlet
that became a major source for videos from the anti-government
protests in Belarus following the disputed 2020 presidential election .
The clip shows a jet on fire followed by the sound of a huge blast -
and was viewed nearly a million times.
A video from the military video game Arma 3 drew one million
views
However, it is not real. It is a clip from the video game Arma 3 and
unrelated to the war in Ukraine.
Did Ukrainian kids see off troops?
An image showing two children seeing off a convoy of Ukrainian
forces into battle has generated millions of engagements - likes and
shares.
It was tweeted by US Congressman Adam Kinzinger and former
Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt, among others.
This image from 2016 has generated millions of engagements
online
But the image was old - it was first published in 2016.
It was taken by a volunteer photographer for the Ukrainian defence
ministry who was later dismissed over allegations that he had staged
some of his combat images.
Kyiv mayor on the front line
An image of Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko has gone viral on Instagram
claiming to show him on the front line.
But again, it's an old photo - first posted by Mr Klitschko to his
Instagram account in March 2021, showing him at the Desna
training centre in the Chernihiv region .
Despite this misleading image, it is true that Mr Klitschko has been
defending his city alongside Ukrainian troops during this conflict.
This image of Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko is from March 2021
Did Zelensky drink tea with Ukrainian
forces?
A video claiming to show Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in
military fatigues giving a morale boost to Ukrainian forces by
drinking tea with them on the battlefield racked up nearly 3 million
views over the weekend.
The video is genuine, but it was shot a week ago, before the
invasion began. It was taken in Shyrokyne, when President Zelensky
visited frontline soldiers to show support for his troops.
This video is from last week, before the war began
Meanwhile, a Telegram account in Mr Zelensky's name drew
attention over the weekend, posting messages that urged Ukrainian
forces to drop their weapons and surrender. But it was fake.
Mr Zelensky has a verified Telegram channel, and has been
addressing the nation throughout the conflict via snappy videos

Foreign Affairs / Europeans To ‘pay A Price’ For Russia Sanctions – Top EU Official by nurudeen181(m): 11:10am On Feb 28, 2022 |
The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen,
has acknowledged that the sweeping sanctions the bloc has
imposed on Russia in recent days over Moscow’s military operation
in Ukraine will have a negative impact on Europeans, too.
Responding to a Euronews correspondent’s remark on Sunday that
“ of course Europeans and Europe will have to pay a price for these
measures, ” von der Leyen replied in the affirmative, saying that
“ every war comes at a cost. ”
However, according to the official, Brussels is not daunted by the
possible economic blowback from the Russia sanctions, and will
continue to prop up Ukraine with a “ strong solidarity. ”
The EU boss listed the bloc’s willingness to take in Ukrainian
refugees, the “ financial support, ” as well as the “ military equipment
support” as proof that the EU is committed to backing Kiev.
The European Commission president also opined that Ukraine
shares “ EU values ” and is defending its “ principles. ” On Friday, Paschal Donohoe, the Irish Minister for Finance and President of the Eurogroup – a body that is comprised of finance ministers of the Euro area – also stated that “ there will be economic costs ” for Europe which “ will emerge over the coming weeks and months.” The official added that the “ impact will be different for different member states. ” Donohoe reassured everyone, however, that the Euro zone’s finance ministers would review their fiscal plans in the near future, and make sure there was enough support for the European economy. The president of the European Central Bank, Christine Lagarde, for her part, said that she saw rising energy prices and sagging business confidence and consumption as the two main risk factors for the EU’s economy. She clarified that “ persistent uncertainty will probably be a drag on consumption and investment, and will impede growth, ” while dismissing concerns over the sanctions’ impact on trade as insignificant. European Commission Vice President, Valdis Dombrovskis, too, suggested that the “ crisis will weigh on EU growth, ” however, according to him, it “ will not stop EU growth” entirely. Since February 24, the EU as a whole, as well as individual member states, have slapped a raft of crippling sanctions on Russia, with the freezing of Moscow’s central bank’s assets being one of the latest blows. Last Thursday, Russian President, Vladimir Putin, announced the beginning of what he described as a special military operation in Ukraine, with the aim being the “demilitarization and denazification” of the country. Ukraine and its Western allies accused Russia of waging an aggressive war and seeking to install a pro-Russian puppet government in Kiev. |

Moscow and Kiev are set to hold talks in Belarus on Monday amid
Russia’s military operation in Ukraine.
Russia attacked the neighboring state early Thursday morning,
arguing that it was defending the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s
Republics, two regions with a sizeable portion of Russian
speakers, which broke off from Ukraine shortly after the 2014 coup
in Kiev. Ukraine said the move was an act of unprovoked
aggression.
The talks are scheduled to begin in Belarus somewhere close to
the Ukrainian border. The Belarusian Foreign Ministry published a
photo of the room for the negotiations on Monday morning. The
country is prepared to organize the talks “at any moment,” Anatoly
Glaz, a foreign ministry spokesman, said.
Sputnik Belarus quoted a source on Monday as saying the
Ukrainians have arrived in the country.
The talks were initially expected to take place in the city of Gomel
in eastern Belarus on Saturday, but the Ukrainians refused to send
a team due to disagreements over the location and preliminary
terms, Kiev said at the time.
Ukrainian officials argued that it was inappropriate to hold talks in
Belarus because Russian troops were using its territory to stage
attacks against Ukraine. Minsk denied that its forces were
participating in the Russian operation. |

Foreign Affairs / EU To Ban RT And Sputnik by nurudeen181(m): 8:53pm On Feb 27, 2022 |
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced
on Sunday that the EU will ban the Russian media outlets RT and
Sputnik accusing them of spreading “harmful disinformation.” She
did not specify whether this ban will apply solely to television
broadcasts, or whether RT and Sputnik’s websites will be affected.
In what she called an “unprecedented” step, von der Leyen
announced that “we will ban in the European Union the Kremlin’s
media machine.”
“The state owned Russia Today and Sputnik, as well as their
subsidiaries, will no longer be able to spread their lies to justify
Putin’s war and to sow division in our union,” she continued. “We
are developing tools to ban toxic and harmful disinformation in
Europe.”
Von der Leyen’s move comes a day after the Association of
European Journalists called on the EU to implement a bloc-wide
ban on RT, and have its journalists “removed.” It also comes
several days after the EU sanctioned RT’s editor-in-chief, Margarita
Simonyan.
Simonyan responded to the latest ban by declaring that “not a
single person who faithfully worked and continues to work for us
will be laid off in any country.”
RT has previously faced censorship in Europe, with German
regulators banning its German-language channel earlier this month.
More recently, Google subsidiary YouTube and Facebook parent
company Meta demonetized RT’s accounts on Saturday, while
Google blocked downloads of RT’s app on Ukrainian territory earlier
on Sunday.
Immediately before announcing the ban on RT and Sputnik, von der
Leyen revealed that the EU will also close off its airspace to all
Russian aircraft, and will supply Ukraine with weapons. |

Foreign Affairs / Zelensky Invites Foreigners To Fight For Ukraine by nurudeen181(m): 3:31pm On Feb 27, 2022 |
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced the
creation of the International Legion of Territorial Defense of
Ukraine, which will enlist foreigners who want to fight for the
country against Russia.
On Sunday, Zelensky addressed the citizens of foreign countries,
saying Russia’s offensive is not just an invasion of Ukraine, but the
“ beginning of a war against Europe. ”
Therefore, he said that anyone who wants to join the fight and
“ stand side by side ” with Ukrainians was welcome to do so.
“ The leadership of Ukraine invites all foreigners who wish to join the
resistance to the Russian occupiers and to protect world security to
come to our state and to join the ranks of the Territorial Defense
Forces. A separate unit of foreigners is being formed – the
International Legion of Territorial Defense of Ukraine ,” he said. Joining would be “ key evidence ” of support for Ukraine, he added. Since Russia launched its offensive, NATO member states have promised to supply weapons to Ukraine. However, the bloc announced that it has no plans to send troops – leading Zelensky to claim that Ukraine was left to defend itself “ alone .” Russian President Vladimir Putin explained the launch of the military operation by the urgent necessity to “ demilitarize Ukraine ,” to protect the republics of Donbass and to ensure that Russia would not be placed under threat by NATO from Ukrainian territory. The West has responded to the offensive by imposing tough new sanctions on Russia. |

The Bank of Russia (the Central Bank) will provide domestic banks
with cash and non-cash liquidity in rubles in order to maintain
financial stability and protect the economy from the impact of the
latest Ukraine-related Western sanctions, the regulator said in a
statement on Sunday.
“ The Bank of Russia will continuously provide banks with cash and
non-cash liquidity in rubles. The REPO (repurchase agreement)
auction on Monday will be held on an unlimited basis, with full
satisfaction of all applications received from banks, ” the statement
released by the press service of the Central Bank reads.
The regulator added that it will also “ significantly expand ” its
Lombard List, which includes the securities it is ready to accept as
collateral for backing credit institutions’ refinancing operations, for
“ maximum coverage of the possible needs of banks in current
liquidity.”
“ The Bank of Russia has the necessary resources and tools to
maintain financial stability and ensure the operational continuity of
the financial sector,” it said, adding that the country’s banking
system is “stable, has sufficient capital and liquidity to function
smoothly in any situation, ” funds held on bank accounts are safe,
and banking services will be provided as usual. The statement comes after a group of Western nations, including the EU, US, UK, and Canada, announced a package of sanctions targeting the Russian economy on Saturday, amid the ongoing Russian military operation in Ukraine. The measures include the freezing of assets held by the Russian Central Bank and cutting off an unspecified number of Russian financial institutions from the SWIFT international system of interbank transfers. The first measure aims to block Russia from using its reserve assets to tackle the impact of Western sanctions on its economy, the second – to sever the ability of Russian banks to conduct transactions internationally. According to the Central Bank, however, the transfer of financial messages within the country is provided by its domestic Financial Message Transfer System (SPFS), which does not depend on SWIFT. According to Russian state development corporation VEB.RF, the SPFS could be used for international transactions. The head of the State Duma Financial Market Committee, Anatoly Aksakov, said alternate ways also exist to keep international transactions working, for instance, using the economic infrastructure of friendly states. Some experts even claim that cutting ties with SWIFT could be a positive development for Russia, as it could propel the spread of the Russian ruble as an international currency.
