Foreign Affairs / Humanitarian Flights For Ukraine Loaded With Weapons, by nurudeen181(m): 8:38am On Mar 16, 2022 |
One of Italy’s largest trade unions has called for a protest outside
the Pisa airport on Saturday, after receiving a tip from some
employees that Ukraine relief flights were transporting weapons
and ammunition, not food and medicine.
Several workers at the Galileo Galilei airport refused to load one of
the cargo flights advertised as carrying humanitarian aid to Ukraine.
The crates did not contain food and medication but weapons,
ammunition and explosives instead, the Unione Sindacale di Base
(USB) said in a statement on Monday evening.
“We strongly denounce this outright falsification, which cynically
uses ‘humanitarian’ aid as cover to fuel the war in Ukraine,” the USB
said.
The union said the workers refused to load the military supplies as
that would lead to the deaths of their colleagues in Ukraine –
namely, those working at the bases targeted by Russian missile
strikes, where the weapons processed through US and NATO
bases in Poland get delivered.
Francesca Donato, an Italian member of the European Parliament,
commented on the union’s statement by calling on the government
in Rome to “clarify” what is happening.
Meanwhile, dockworkers at the nearby port of Livorno joined the
protest on Tuesday, praising their airport colleagues for standing
up for their values.
“We stand alongside the Ukrainian peoples, the Donbass and Russia
and we do not want to be complicit in this conflict,” the Porto
Livorno chapter of USB said in a statement.
USB is calling for air traffic control of the Pisa airport to
“immediately block these flights of death disguised as humanitarian
aid.” A protest under the slogan “bridges of peace, not flights of
war” is scheduled outside the airport for Saturday, March 19.
The union also called on all workers to refuse to load weapons and
explosives, and for an immediate ceasefire and peace talks to end
the conflict in Ukraine.
Russia sent troops into Ukraine on February 23, saying it needs to
demilitarize and “denazify” the government in Kiev that sought
NATO membership and nuclear weapons. The Ukrainian
government has accused Russia of an unprovoked attack. NATO
has pledged military and humanitarian aid to Kiev, while enacting a
widespread embargo against Russia. |

NATO allies don’t want to see Ukraine among their ranks and Kiev
realizes that, President Volodymyr Zelensky told Western leaders
on Tuesday. Now Kiev seeks protection from individual member
states.
“We’ve been hearing for years that the [NATO] doors were
supposedly open, but now we know we won’t enter there. That is the
truth, and we must acknowledge that,” Zelensky said during a video
call with the UK Joint Expeditionary Force, a meeting of the leaders
of Nordic and Baltic nations hosted by Prime Minister Boris
Johnson.
“I am glad that our people are beginning to understand that and to
rely on ourselves and those partners that aid us,” he added.
The Ukrainian leader apparently included the people he was
addressing on the list of good friends of Ukraine, despite most of
them leading NATO allies. He said the military organization was in
no position to offer the security guarantees that his country wants
to receive from other nations. But individual states could help
Ukraine even with NATO doors closed to it, he suggested, and have
been doing so for eight years of what he described as a Ukrainian
war against Russia.
Zelensky shamed NATO for not imposing a no-fly zone over
Ukraine due to concerns that this would escalate the hostilities into
a full-blown world war. The refusal to impose it is shared by all
members of the organization, with US, its de facto leader,
reiterating it on many occasions over the past weeks.
The Ukrainian leader claimed NATO member states “hypnotized
themselves” with the fear of a global conflict that would have the
potential of ending human civilization. He didn’t hide bitterness
over the fact that allies refused to protect Ukraine the way they are
bound to defend each other in case of a military attack.
Ukraine made NATO membership a key goal of its foreign policy
after the 2014 armed coup in Kiev put an anti-Russian government
into power. The aspiration was made part of its national
constitution in 2019.
Russia launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February.
President Vladimir Putin stated that NATO’s creeping expansion
into Ukraine without its formal accession was a major factor in his
decision to order the incursion. Kiev blasted the attack as
“unprovoked.”
Western nations mostly agreed but refused to fight for Ukraine
militarily. Instead, they ramped up weapons supplies to Kiev and
imposed harsh economic sanctions against Russia, expecting them
to inflict enough damage to stop the military offensive. |

Foreign Affairs / America Begs Citizens To Fight For Ukraine Against Russia by nurudeen181(m): 9:08am On Mar 12, 2022 |
Washington has no plans to keep track of US citizens who
volunteer to fight for Ukraine amid the ongoing Russian attack, the
State Department said, warning, however, that such trips can result
in “capture or death.”
“When Americans travel abroad they are not required to register with
the Department of State in any way, so these are not metrics we
would track,” State Department spokesperson Ned Price told
reporters on Friday, when asked how many Americans have
traveled to Ukraine amid Kiev’s recruitment campaign for a
“foreign legion.”
Price noted that the US government still urges Americans to avoid
going to Ukraine, but suggested no action would be taken against
those who opt to do so.
The spokesman went on to say that travel to Ukraine poses “risks
to personal safety,” and that US citizens “should be aware that
Russia has stated that it intends to treat foreign fighters in Ukraine
as ‘mercenaries’ rather than as lawful combatants or prisoners of
war.”
Washington, nevertheless, expects Moscow to “respect all of its
obligations and law of war,” Price noted, warning of “potential
attempts at criminal prosecution” and a “heightened risk for
mistreatment” for the American “volunteers.”
The comments follow reports that around 100 Americans had been
screened to join Kiev’s forces as they fight Russian troops after
Ukraine explicitly called on foreign volunteers to join the conflict.
Citizens from a number of other countries have also lined up to do
the same. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed that
some 16,000 foreign fighters were expected to arrive in Ukraine
last week.
Moscow attacked its neighbor in late February, following a seven-
year standoff over Ukraine’s failure to implement the terms of the
Minsk agreements, and Russia’s eventual recognition of the
Donbass republics in Donetsk and Lugansk. The German- and
French-brokered protocols had been designed to regularize the
status of those regions within the Ukrainian state.
Russia has now demanded that Ukraine officially declare itself a
neutral country that will never join the US-led NATO military bloc.
Kiev insists the Russian offensive was completely unprovoked and
has denied claims it was planning to retake the two republics by
force. |

Foreign Affairs / EU Tells Citizens To Lower Heating by nurudeen181(m): 6:20am On Mar 10, 2022 |
The European Union’s (EU) High Representative for Foreign Policy
Josep Borrell has asked citizens to turn down the heating in their
homes, as one way for the bloc to cut its dependence on Russian
gas amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
“The challenges we face are going to require a very tough stance
and we have to be willing to pay the price,” Borrell stated,
suggesting, “European citizens lower the heating of their homes,”
as part of their “individual effort to cut gas consumption.”
The statement from the EU official comes after the bloc unveiled a
new round of sanctions against Russia and Belarus over the
ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The new restrictions cut off a number
of Belarusian banks from the SWIFT network, hit the Russian
maritime sector, and impose restrictions on 160 Russian
lawmakers and business people.
The EU currently imports 45% of its coal, 40% of its gas, and 27%
of its oil from Russia, with Borrell stating the bloc is taking steps to
cut the “umbilical cord that unites our economy and the Russian
one” to cut off the “flow that allows [Russia] to accumulate reserves
with which to finance” the conflict in Ukraine.
The European Commission outlined on Tuesday a proposal to
“make Europe independent from Russian fossil fuels well before
2030.” The bloc will begin by reducing EU demand by two thirds
before the end of the year in response to Russia’s military activity.
“We simply cannot rely on a supplier who explicitly threatens us. We
need to act now to mitigate the impact of rising energy prices,
diversify our gas supply for next winter and accelerate the clean
energy transition,” European Commission President Ursula von der
Leyen said on Tuesday, as the plan was unveiled. |

Ukraine invasion: False claims the

Russia-Ukraine war
This footage from a 2020 TV series is being shared with claims it
shows actors being made up to be victims of the Ukraine war
Nearly two weeks after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the flow of
false or misleading information about the war hasn't let up and now
there are some outlandish theories being shared online.
Some have begun to circulate claims the war is a hoax, a media
fabrication, or has been exaggerated by the West in terms of its
scale.
We've examined some of them.
False claims about "crisis actors"
A video of a young woman and a young man having fake blood
applied to their faces has racked up millions of views on multiple
platforms.
It is shared as supposed evidence that the war in Ukraine is a hoax
and civilian victims are actually "crisis actors" - people hired to act
out scenes from an attack.
This image is from a 2020 Ukrainian TV series and unrelated to the
Russian invasion
But the video is unrelated to the war. It was shot in 2020 on the
production set of Ukrainian TV series Contamin .
The male actor can be seen in behind-the-scenes images from the
set tweeted in December 2020.

Moving corpse
A video of a news reporter in front of multiple body bags has gone
viral on several major social networks, and has been spread widely
by pro-Kremlin accounts.
Seconds into the clip, one of the body bags starts moving, a man
removes the cover and is attended to by a photographer.
Social media posts claim the video was shot in Ukraine and proves
the war is either a hoax or manufactured by "Western propaganda".
Video of a climate change protest in Vienna is being presented as
fake Ukrainian victims from the war
But the claims are false. The video clip is from a climate change
protest in Vienna in early February, as reported by Austrian
newspaper Osterreich . Organised by "Friday for Future" climate
activists, the depiction of body bags aimed to highlight the danger of
carbon emissions to human life.
The same video was shared by conspiracy groups last month with
false claims that it showed a Covid "crisis actor" .
False wooden guns claim
A screenshot of a Fox News broadcast showing two Ukrainian men
holding what appear to be wooden guns has gone viral.
It is often accompanied by false claims that the war in Ukraine is a
hoax and the fact that they are not real guns is proof of this.
Fake guns were given to civilian volunteers willing to train to
defend their communities before the war
The footage actually dates back to mid-February, before the war
began.
It was taken during a training course provided by the far-right Azov
battalion for civilian volunteers in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv willing
to defend themselves and their communities in case of a Russian
invasion.
Ukraine invasion: Misleading claims continue to go viral
Ukraine conflict: Further false images shared online
Ukraine conflict: Many misleading images shared online
Steven Seagal is not fighting in Ukraine
A false tweet - seemingly sent by CNN's verified Twitter account -
claims US actor Steven Seagal, who is a dual US-Russian national,
has been spotted "among Russian special forces" near Ukraine's
capital of Kyiv.
Along with ordinary users, the tweet has been picked up by
influential accounts with huge followings, including US podcast host
Joe Rogan, who shared it with his 14 million followers on Instagram.
A false tweet about Steven Seagal fighting in Ukraine was shared
by Joe Rogan
But Mr Seagal is not fighting alongside Russian forces in Ukraine,
and the tweet was probably generated by one of the multiple free
online tools that enables users to create fake - but authentic-looking
- tweets from verified accounts.
The actor, 69, told Fox News last week he looked at both countries
as "one family" and hoped for a "positive, peaceful resolution".
CNN said the image was fabricated and it had "never reported
anything like this".
Mr Rogan later deleted his Instagram post.
Russian diplomat shares false tweet
A Russian diplomat has shared screenshots showing a fabricated
story about a journalist being killed in Ukraine during the Russian
invasion.
"How to make a fake… colleagues, beware, the main battle is not in
Ukraine, it's with lies and fakes of MSM" tweeted Dmitry Polyansky,
Russia's deputy ambassador to the UN, referring to "mainstream
media" as MSM.
His post was accompanied by a tweet alleging that CNN had
reported on the death of "Bernie Gores" in Ukraine, after sharing a
story about the same man's demise in Afghanistan during the
Taliban takeover last year.
An image of YouTuber Jordie Jordan was used with a false identity
to claim he was reported as dead in Ukraine by CNN
But the screenshots presented as proof of fabrication come from
fake CNN accounts - both of which have since been suspended by
Twitter. And the man presented in the images as Bernie Gores is in
fact a YouTuber, who is very much alive, called Jordie Jordan.
A CNN representative told fact-checkers from Reuters the posts
were "absolute fiction" .

False footage
Different versions of a video of a large crowd being asked by a
director to run and scream in fear have racked up hundreds of
thousands of views on multiple platforms.
It is claimed the video was leaked from Ukraine, suggesting some of
the distressing scenes run by media outlets are actually fabricated.
Behind-the-scenes footage from the film Invasion Planet Earth is
being shared in the context of the Ukraine invasion
But the video was actually shot in Birmingham's Victoria Square in
2013 for the sci-fi film Invasion Planet Earth, which at the time was
titled Kaleidoscope Man.
The film's director, Simon Cox, said on Twitter he was "shocked to
see my footage being used like this" .
Vice-president's wife didn't join army
Social media users have been sharing an image allegedly showing
the wife of a 'Ukrainian vice-president' who has joined the country's
armed forces to fight the Russian invasion.
However, Ukraine does not have a vice-president.
Twitter users have wrongly claimed that the woman in the picture
is the Ukrainian vice-president's wife
Another version of the claim doing the rounds on Twitter wrongly
suggests that the woman in the picture is Ukraine's first lady Olena
Zelenska.
Fact-checkers Logically have ascertained that the photograph is an
image of a Ukrainian soldier from August 2021.
The original photo was taken during a rehearsal for a military parade
in Kyiv. |

Foreign Affairs / Kiev Accuses Ukrainian MP Of State Treason by nurudeen181(m): 8:35pm On Mar 06, 2022 |
Ukrainian law enforcement has accused opposition MP Ilya Kiva of
state treason. The nation’s prosecutor general, Irina Venediktova,
informed the lawmaker about her agency’s decision in a fiery
Facebook post on Sunday, accusing him of “doing everything” to
invite the “Russian aggressors” to Ukraine.
Kiva’s actions have dealt “colossal damage” to Ukraine,
Venediktova said, warning that he will face “no other destiny” than
arrest, extradition, and trial. She did not list any specific actions
that earned the MP a place on Ukraine’s “list of suspects,” but
instead accused him of “doing everything” to make Ukraine’s
borders “change,” forcing millions of Ukrainians out of the country,
and making “millions of Ukrainians hide in bombs shelters.”
Venediktova, apparently referring to the ongoing Russian military
invasion of Ukraine, said her words were based on, “not emotion,”
but a list of “facts.”
Kiva, a former member of the ‘Opposition Platform — For Life’
party, has long been a fierce critic of Ukrainian President
Volodymyr Zelensky and Kiev’s pro-NATO policies.
In a recent interview, the MP slammed the US and NATO for using
Ukraine as “bait” to provoke Russia into a conflict. Washington and
its allies tricked Zelensky and then just threw Ukraine away, he
said. “The worst thing is that the Ukrainian people have gone down”
along with the government in Kiev, Kiva added.
The MP has long advocated for neutral status for Ukraine and
opposed the nation’s aspirations to join NATO. After Moscow
launched its miliary operation in Ukraine, Kiva accused Zelensky of
provoking the bloodshed.
“As a citizen of Ukraine, I must fight for my nation to join NATO…
But I do not want into NATO, I want to live in an independent country
that remains non-aligned and can serve as a bridge between East
and West,” Kiva said on March 1.
His statements put him at odds with his own party, which banished
the MP from its ranks in late February, accusing him of “impeding”
peace talks between Moscow and Kiev.
Speaking on the prosecutor general’s decision on Saturday, Kiva
said he had long been aware of plans to accuse him of treason, and
left Ukraine as early as January 30. The lawmaker first flew to
Spain and then moved to Moscow. He also warned Ukrainian law
enforcement that they will soon have to “answer for the travesty of
justice.” 1 Like |

Foreign Affairs / Russia Claims Ukraine Destroying Evidence Of Us-funded Bioweapons Program by nurudeen181(m): 8:19pm On Mar 06, 2022 |
As Russian troops entered Ukraine, the government in Kiev ordered
the “emergency destruction” of pathogens including plague and
anthrax at US-funded laboratories near the Russian border, the
Ministry of Defense in Moscow claimed on Sunday. Earlier rumors
that the Russian military was targeting US-run biolabs were written
off as conspiracy theories, but the ministry has promised to back
up its claims with documents.
“We have received documentation from employees of Ukrainian
biolaboratories on the emergency destruction on February 24 of
especially dangerous pathogens of plague, anthrax, tularemia,
cholera and other deadly diseases,” read a statement from the
ministry.
The statement accused the “Kiev regime” of conducting an
“emergency cleansing” to hide evidence of the supposed biological
weapons program, which the ministry claimed was funded by the
US, and involved the production of “biological weapons
components” at at least two laboratories in the cities of Poltava and
Kharkov, both of which have seen intense fighting between Russian
and Ukrainian forces in recent days.
The documents published by the ministry purportedly include an
order from the Ukrainian Ministry of Health to destroy the
pathogens, and lists of the germs in question.
RT can not independently verify the authenticity of these
documents. Russia’s Defense Ministry said that they are currently
being analyzed by radiation, chemical and biological protection
specialists.
“In the near future we will present the results of the analysis,” the
ministry said, adding that it believes the documents will prove that
Ukraine and the US were violating Article 1 of the UN Biological
Weapons Convention. The US, Ukraine and Russia are among more
than 180 parties to this treaty, and under Article 1 of the
agreement, all parties agree “never under any circumstances to
develop, produce, stockpile, acquire, or retain” biological weapons.
As of the moment of this article’s publication, Washington has not
commented on the ministry’s claims, and neither has Kiev.
In the initial days of Russia’s military offensive last month, claims
circulated online that Russia was targeting western-funded biolabs
with missile strikes. These allegations were never verified and
were derided by western sources as conspiracy theories , although
the Pentagon has publicly stated that it works with the Ukrainian
government to “consolidate and secure pathogens and toxins of
security concern in Ukrainian government facilities,” for “peaceful
research and vaccine development,” according to the US embassy
in Kiev. |
