The University of Lagos has confirmed that 12, 811 students of the institution are graduating during her 50th convocation ceremonies holding from April 1 to 5.

This was disclosed by Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, the Vice Chancellor of the university during a pre-convocation news conference on Wednesday in Lagos. He confirmed that 271 of the graduating students will graduate with first class degrees.

The Federal Government of Nigeria and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU have resumed fresh renegotiations on the agreement between the two made in 2009.

The Chairman, heading the Federal Government team in the renegotiation, Dr. Wale Babalakin, said while addressing newsmen in the 6-hour long meeting in Abuja on Wednesday that he was optimistic the meeting would be productive.



According to him, the ASUU team has presented more than 20 matters that were being reviewed to ensure stability in the university system. He further disclosed that both teams were determined to bring to an end, the problem being faced by the system for ages now.

His statement reads as follows:



“We resumed our renegotiation today. The government team and ASUU were appropriately represented and we had positive discussions.

“We are actually hopeful that we are on a positive path to finalising the negotiation.”



“There were very hectic discussions on topical issues and both sides had extensive contributions for the benefit of the university system.”

“It is the same negotiation, we had interim discussion, that is over now and we are back to where we left off. So it is a continuous negotiation.”



“ASUU submitted its timetable today and there are more than 20 issues in that timetable, it is not a single issue, but they will all be discussed,’’ Babalakin said.

After the elections, a councilor representing Bolari East in Gombe State will have to spend his next three months in jail after being sentenced for vote buying.



This is the handwork of the Gombe Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission who dragged the councilor, Ishiyaku Garba to court over three count charge bordering on bribery.

The commission told the court that Ishiyaku was arrested by its operatives based on intelligence report and was arrested at Bolari Polling Unit 0077 in Gombe metropolis during the Presidential and National Assembly Elections, where he was arrested while sharing money.


When asked by the court, the councillor pleaded guilty to the three-count charges.


In his verdict, Justice Sa’ad Muhammad, convicted him on the three counts and sentenced him to one month in prison with an option of N100,000 as fine for count one; one month in prison on count two, with an option of N50,000 as fine; one month in prison on count three, with an option of N20,000 as fine.


Justice Muhammad said the prison terms are to run consecutively. He further ordered that the sum of N295,000 recovered from the convict should be forfeited to the Federal Government.

This means the Senior Secondary School Examination, (SSCE) this year is really going to be tough as the National Examination Council, NECO, and the Nigerian Security and Cilvil Defence Council have, NSCDC, agreed to join forces to tackle examination malpractices or what students popularly call expo during the SSCE.

This was disclosed in a statement on Thursday by Mr Azeez Sani, Head, Information and Public Relations Division, when the Chairman, Governing Board of NECO, Dr Abubakar Saddiq led a delegation to the Commandant General of NSCDC, Mr Abdullah Muhammadu.

According to Mr. Azeez, such a collaboration will be important in ensuring the credibility of the NECO examination and further strengthen the existing relationship between the two councils.

He further iterated that the examination council has taken care of every necessary arrangements needed to ensure examination malpractices are put in check and he further urged the Security agency to brace themselves up for any challenges that may arise during the examinations.

Among measures the council have put in places are biometric verification/capturing to check impersonation of candidates at the examination centers.

According to him, among such measures is the biometric capturing of candidates to check impersonation at examination centres.

He also added that the chairman urged all the security personnels of the NSCDC to prevent any form of examination malpractices in and out of the examination centers.

Also, Acting Registrar/Chief Executive, NECO, Mr Abubakar Gana, said: “the Council has been enjoying the services of your organisation without any hindrance from 2008 to date.

“We want the collaboration to be strengthened to ensure security in all our examination centres across the country.”

The Commandant General pledged the continued support of his Agency in the provision of adequate security at examination centres to ensure the credibility of NECO results.

Muhammadu stressed the need for stakeholders to make sacrifice to ensure the realisation of the Council’s noble mandate.

“We will take NECO assignment as one of our critical mandate as we have been doing over the years.”

He gave the assurance that his personnel would ensure that an atmosphere of peace prevails in and around all examination centres. (NAN)

Update on the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board examination coming in now reports that the candidates who have not yet been notified for the board’s mock Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination probably didn’t indicate interest during their registration.

This was made known to the News Agency Of Nigeria, (NAN) in Lagos State, today Friday by the board’s Head, Media and Information, Dr. Fabian Benjamin during an interview

NAN reports that, of about 1.9 million candidates who registered for the 2019 UTME, which is computer-based, a total of 157,631 indicated interest for the mock as of the close of UTME registration on February 21.

“We have concluded plans for the conduct of this Mock UTME scheduled to hold on April 1.

“Some candidates have been saying they are yet to receive and print their notification slips for this mock examination. I think that has nothing to do with the board because all those who indicated interest to participate have all been notified.

“Again, some of them might have registered late. However, the examination is optional, and I do not think there is any cause to worry,’’ he said.

NAN also confirmed that printing of notification slip of the main UTME will begin on April 2, while the examination will start from April 11.

Reports emerged that a male student of Michael Okpara University Of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia state, was filmed mercilessly beaten up a girl over N20K.


Reports on social media had it that the girl whose name is Jane called it a quit with his boyfriend and the news was not well accepted by the said boyfriend who claimed to have spent so much money on her and even helped sort her tuition fees. He stormed her lecture hall and descended on her, demanding for his N20K and beating her up mercilessly as other students watched and tried to intervene.

Members of the opposition, as well as Transparency International, described the exercise as voter inducement.

The chairman of the anti-corruption organisation, Awwal Rafsanjani, noted that the initiative was an “official use of public funds in the name of TraderMoni to actually induce voters.”

He added, “It was not done three years ago. It was only started close to election time. So, the allegation by many Nigerians that this is clearly a case of vote buying using public funds goes contrary to our constitution and to have a free and fair election.

A Nigerian girl who is eighteen years old and studying in Texas is now in the police custody for pouring bleach into her roommate’s eyes during a heated argument.

The 18-year old, whose name is Brianna Esomchukwu has newly been admitted into Prairie View A&M University in Texas. She was on March 8 charged with aggravated assault.

According to the University’s Chief of Police, Keith Jemison, the victim, a nineteen year old Julishia Wyatt, had bleach in her eyes and she sustained minor burns on her skin after the attack. Julishia was taken to a local hospital where she had her eyes flushed out.

Speaking to WFAA, Wyatt’s mom said that there had been some friction between the roommates – particularly since Wyatt complained to a resident advisor that their on-campus apartment smelled like marijuana, which they think contributed to the incident.

A university spokesman said Esomchukwu’s enrollment and status as a student are under review, WFAA reported.

While there are some Nigerian guys who are actually excited about the idea of attending a private university after their secondary schools, there are even more than thrice the number who don’t wish to, especially those who come from well-to-do families whose parents are always intoxicated with the proposed or assumed good morals and high quality of education their children will benefit from these private institutions.

Not to lie or hide it, private universities do have some good advantages like the absense of the very familiar strike in the federal and state universities and the quicker and better access to lectures but honestly that’s all they can boast of. Forget their forming and poshy lifestyles. Many of them wish they were in federal and public universities. Lol.

I had an encounter with a girl from Madonna university and she confirmed she wished she was in Imo State University as her school was worse than a nursery school in the ways they were being treated.

Going to a federal or state university gives you the exposure you need in life and not being confined like someone in a prison or a food warming in the microwave. You learn the ethics and orientations of the real world and you are braced to face life because you have seen it all.

You gain wisdom outside the school lecture halls and your system becomes automatically adapted to the real life hustles and struggles unlike some over pampered babies in the private institutions who can’t face the real world when they graduate.

Graduating from a public institution gives you a psychological balance and charges your mental ability to scale through difficult times.

Enough of the talk. Let’s roll straight to the point. Here are six reasons private universities don’t suit a typical Nigerian in this our kind of bad economy and government no matter how rich your parents are. C’mon, forget the money, you need to experience life in the public institutions and your life will never remain the same.

Freedom and Independence: You don’t wanna be confined in a place like a baby or someone in prison or a food warming in a microwave. You need space, you need freedom, you need to explore more, you need to move out and experience some things. Unfortunately, going to private universities, especially those owned by the churches won’t help you achieve this and I know deep down your heart, you wouldn’t like this to be your case. You also need to wear that favorite dress you like and you can only do this in a public university. In private universities, you live the normal routine of a bank staff – everyday corporate. Lol.

Cost of Education: Private universities pay exorbitant school fees as if they even learn anything. What has a student from a private university in Nigeria invented or accomplished after all the school fees? Not just about fees, cost of living in private universities are way too high unlike in the public universities where you can cook your own food, go to the market and buy foodstuffs at cheaper prices. Don’t you think you are too old to be fed like a baby in the private university?

Exposure: In a public university, you literally meet life and life meets you. You see it all. But in a private university, you graduate and still haven’t met a quarter of life let alone life meeting you.

Life on and off campus is everything: Like it sounds, it’s just it. Campus life is sweet – on and off it. That’s the kind of fun you will only experience in a public university. No wonder when students in private universities are on break, they want to do all the bad things and have all the fun at once before going back to school. They know they are in prisons and not school. Lol.

Maturity: When you graduate from a public university, you automatically become an adult because the school system has shaped you to be. But when you graduate from a private university, you start life afresh like a new born baby.

Hard Work: Public university will teach you that hard work is compulsory and you will see it with your two eyes. Students in privates schools are still being pampered like nursery school students.

On Wednesday, there was a sad news of a multiple road crash that claimed six lives while fourteen others sustained serious injuries. This was reported by the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC. The fatal accident happened at Upper Iweka Road, along the Enugu-Onitsha express way.

The incident was confirmed to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, by the FRSC commander of that sector, Kunapayi Ayodele in Onitsha.

Making the report, Ayodele said:

“Yes, there was a fatal accident that involved an articulated vehicle loaded with kerosene which lost control and rammed into seven other vehicles at Tracas Motor Park along the Upper Iweka Road.

“Six persons, four males and two females, died instantly while 14 others sustained injuries. The victims were deposited at Toronto Hospital and Borromew Hospital Onitsha.”

Ayodele also confirmed that the affected vehicle was towed away for further investigations.

The Nigerian Red Cross Society also played a role in the incident. The State Chairman of the Society, Peter Katch, confirmed that the organization took 7 corpses to the mortuary of Toronto Hospital while 4 victims sustained serious injuries.

Peter Match while speaking, said:

“A tanker loaded with kerosene lost control and rammed into people and killed a lot of them from MCC Bus Stop down to Peace Motor Park gate.

“Seven dead people were deposited at Toronto Hospital Mortuary, and one other person we took to the hospital is still receiving treatment.

“Three other injured people are at Beater Hospital along Onitsha-Owerri Road.

“That is the number of causalities recorded by the Nigerian Red Cross Society,” Mr Katchy said.

Also, an eyewitness told NAN that the fuel tanker lost control at MCC bus stop along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway and jumped from the expressway to the service lane.

The source said the tanker crushed everything on its way until it finally stopped inside a drainage.

“The tanker driver ran away immediately after the incident for fear of being mobbed,” the sourced added. (NAN)

President Buhari has expressed his sadness at the incident and he has sent his condolences to the victims’ families. He wrote on his Twitter page:

“I commiserate with the families of those who lost their lives in the tanker accident in Onitsha, yesterday. Condolences also to the government and people of Anambra State. I pray that the Almighty God will comfort the bereaved and grant quick recovery to the injured.”

Two days ago, there was a sad news of a School building collapse in Ita Faji, Lagos Island, Lagos State. It was a three- storey building of which the last floor was used for a private school. The ground floor was used for Nursery school and also for shop while the middle floor was used for residence.



So far, the number of casualties can not be exactly determined but over 45 school children were rescued alive and are receiving treatment while more than half of that figure were rescued dead. Reports have it that the very old and fatigued building had been marked twice for demolition by the Lagos State Government but nothing was done about it.



The bodies of the dead victims and those who were still alive and in bad conditions were rushed to the Inland General Hospital for treatment and for deposition of corpses in the mortuary. The hospital further confirmed that they were moving some victims to the General Hospital, Ikeja and to other Lagos State owned hospitals for faster and better treatments.


Yesterday, Thursday, Lagos State Environmental Management Agency, LASEMA, confirmed that all trapped victims had been rescued. Though residents still maintained that some school children were still trapped in the building.



Lagos State outgoing governor, Ambode, paid a visit to the scene while rescue was still ongoing. Condolences have since been pouring in as regards the incident.

President Muhammadu Buhari tweeted, “I’m extremely saddened by the news of the collapsed building in Itafaaji area of Lagos. It touches one to lose precious lives in any kind of mishap, particularly those so young and tender. May God grant everyone affected by this sad incident fortitude and succour.”


He further urged the Lagos State government to do something about the incident to prevent further future occurrences. Incoming Lagos State governor, Olajide Sanwo Olu also commiserated with the families of the victims. Celebrities such as Mercy Johnson, Ali Baba, Mercy Aigbe, etc have also sent in their deepest condolences.

Last week, in what seemed like a miracle, Manchester United inspired an unbelievable comeback against PSG at the Le Parc des Princes to scale through the UEFA Champions League round of 16. The win came after a 2-0 deficit at the Old Trafford in favor of PSG. However, Man U defeated the French giants with 3 goals to 1, setting them on a 3-3 aggregate and the Reds won on away goals.

PSG forward, Neymar Jr. who was sidelined during the two games due to a broken bone in his foot, reacted badly to the loss after Man U was awarded a last minute penalty that Rashford converted.

It was a controversial penalty from a handball which the referee had to consult VAR before taking his decision. Reacting to the loss, Neymar took to his social media handle, Instagram, to vent his disappointment at the decision of the officials. He wrote:

“This is a disgrace, they put four people that know nothing about football in charge of looking at the replay for VAR.

There is no penalty. How can it be a handball when it hits his back?! Go f**k yourselves!”

The topic of marriage and divorce is a very important topic that touches every human race and religion and culture and whatnot.

While, as written in the Bible, many Christians believe adultery should be the only ground for divorce, many others, both Christians and non-christians believe adultery is just a fraction of the bad sides of marriage people experience. Cases like abuse, they believe, is a good reason for seeking divorce. After all, marriage should be enjoyed and not endured. However, it is also for better or worse.

Tonight’s Champions league matches were more of thrashing battles for the home teams against the away teams.

A certain soldier’s wife in Lagos has melted an inhuman treatment to her maid in Lagos State. According to the lady who shared the news on Facebook:

“The above picture is that of a house maid to a woman who resides at No 10 Andrew Alebe str. Off Okemoro str. Iyana isashi, ojo L.G.A, lagos. The little girl is malnourished and being beaten with knives from the madam. The said woman terrorizes the community claiming her husband is a soldier. Her case (the housemaid) is already known at the Isashi police division. The police are helpless and implore concerned citizens of the community to go viral with the situation in order to get the relevant govt. Agencies to step into the matter before the madam murders this innocent child whose parents are still alive and so very poor back in the village. Pls help spread. #save Ulunma#”

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has published names of candidates elected for the Senatorial seats on Monday and the name of Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha is missing from the list. The governor contested to represent Imo West senatorial district during the just concluded 23 of February elections.

Rochas Okorocha was declared winner of the Imo West Senatorial District by Innocent Ibeabuchi who was INEC returning officer for the Imo West senatorial district.

But after the declaration, the returning officer reported that he was put under duress to declare Rochas Okorocha winner of the district at the Imo West collation office in Orlu.

According to him, Rochas Okorocha’s supporters seized him and forced him to finish the announcement and declare the governor winner

The returning officer’s account might have necessitated the omission of Okorocha’s name from INEC’s list, as the commission simply explained the omission on its website as “declaration under duress”.

The names of five other candidates in Abuja South, Kogi East, Ondo South, Plateau South, Rivers East and West, as well as Imo North, as supplementary elections will be conducted in those areas, while the candidate of Bauchi South will be determined by the court.
