BusinessRe: Lagos State Shuts Alade Market This Morning by nwaire: 5:07pm On Jun 21, 2016
Lock up shops is another big problem small business owners have to go through to succeed in Lagos. Its pathetic, to think that some of the businesses in that market have stock and asset worth millions of Naira and they are real and genuine business not like some 419 offices on the island. This small businesses are the real sector Nigeria has for now until the industries come back alive why make them fail or unstable, whoever advise govt, especially Lagos state govt on disrupting the activities of this business owners is not doing even the state any good.

Good write up, very articulate, sweet talk, talk is cheap. grin sincerely I want to agree with you, I want to believe over 50% of Nigerian's living below poverty line don't know this above principles of savings and investment (The riches man in babylon)... summary is we don't choose to be poor, when I say this I use percentage of people. Don't generalize because your security man does not know the principle of saving and investment or is financially reckless. If things are going on well for you count your self lucky.
Jobs/VacanciesRe: Reasons You Don't Get Much Job Invites As You Should by nwaire: 4:09pm On Jun 09, 2016
shekonz:
Reasons Why You Probably Don't Get As Much Job Invites As You Should

Overtime, I have come to see many people complain that they send applications for jobs and don't get invites. Although this could be as a result of natural causes, as honestly there are TOO MANY PEOPLE applying for TOO FEW JOBS, so sometimes not everyone would get called, especially wen the applicants gets to know abt the vacancy a little late after it has been publicized, e don finish be that..)

But with this natural causes already being a hindering factor, it pains me when I see a lot of graduates shooting themselves in the foot and making themselves "unacceptable" for the job the moment click "send" for the application. Some of the unpardonable errors include:

1) Sending out cv's without a cover letter/Application letter or subject of mail:

This is something that I have seen repeated several times. Its as though the advent of this computer age has brought a draw back as applications submitted hard copy those days came with handwritten letters. But this days, you would be suprised to see a so called "desperate" job seeker sending an application sometimes without a subject and all you see could be "PLS FIND ATTACHED FILE" or just even an attachment.. LIKE SERIOUSLY!!!?? When there are several applications coming in for the same role with cover letters that would make d recruiter want to av d individual sitting in fromt of him to discuss further?

I recently had to put out a job Ad on nairaland here and other platforms for a job role. Got series of applications (and am still getting), they were too much and I had to discard several because of these reasons..

Just a 2-paragraph body to your mail introducing yourself and stating the skill set you poSsess that matches the job role would make the person reading feel you are serious and want to open that your precious "Attachment" for more info..

2) Tailor your cv to the Job requirement:
This applies mostly to entry level/0-2yrs job applicants. Most times we seem to have rigid cv's wch we just "FORWARD" for every job applications. Though u can't twerk your work experience, but most job ad's usually have "Requirements/skills" that comes with them and you can tailor your skill set section of your cv to meet these requirement. Each firm or job opening has its unique requirements and you can tailor your cv to meet it and also lay emphasis of your suitability in your application.

3)Over- reliance on Qualification: simply put, its not what you have on your pali, but what you can offer.. Several ppl have the BSc and even MSc u are carrying. What sets u out of the pack?? What skill set do you possess. You say u av computing skills, but u fail to tell an emplyer what you can do with the various Basic microsoft app.. It doesn't work that way..

Several other reasons like unwilligness to change from comfort zone, unpreparedness and poor self development can play a part..

Note that an Invite is not a guarantee of a job, but is a foot in the door and gives u a 50-50 chance regardless of competition.. NO EMPLOYER WOULD REJECT VALUE WHEN HE SEES IT..

I hope and pray we all find a job that would be rewarding to us or CREATE ONE FOR OURSELVES.

Cheers
Nice writeup but all said above is not new to me oo, I use as many styles I know and read here to apply but no invite.... its tireing jare if there is a word like that

CareerYABATECH Accuses Ex-bursar, Others Of Stealing N1.6bn by nwaire(op): 6:02pm On Apr 21, 2016
Authorities of the Yaba College of Technology have accused Mr. Olu Ibirogba, a former bursar of the institution, and seven other members of staff of stealing N1.6bn belonging to the institution.
The college leadership, which made this known, said the money was allegedly stolen between 2008 and 2013 when Ibirogba was the bursar of the school.
It posted the report on its website on April 18, 2016.
The accused persons, the college added, carted away both the software and hard copies of records of payment and other records from the Student Account Section of the bursary.
But dismissing the allegation on Wednesday, the former bursar described the report as false and mischievous.
According to him, the allegation is created to cover up the misdeeds of the college Rector, Dr. Kudirat Ladipo.
Ibirogba had earlier petitioned the Presidency and the nation’s anti-graft agencies, accusing the rector of corruption.
Specifically, the former bursar and other co-accused had in a petition to President Muhammadu Buhari, dated June 10, 2015, and entitled, ‘Large scale stealing and victimisation by YABATECH authorities: Appeal for intervention so that we are not silenced; accused the rector of engaging in corrupt practices.

For instance, they noted that the Governing Council of the school approved N5m monthly security vote for the rector, an allegation the latter had denied.
The Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu, had last December also set up probe panels to visit YABATECH and some other tertiary institutions, whose leadership had been accused of financial and administrative abuses.
Some of the institutions are the Federal University, Dustin-Ma, Katsina State; Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State; University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State; Federal University, Kashere, Gombe State; and the University of Abuja.
Others are the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu State; the Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, Edo State; the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Anambra State; and the University of Calabar, Cross River State.
The panels submitted their reports in January.
Stakeholders, including the Civil Liberties Organisation, had urged the President to make public the reports of investigating panels set up to examine the allegations levelled against some these vice-chancellors and rectors.

CareerRe: Share Your Experiences As A Younger Senior Management Staff by nwaire: 2:21pm On Apr 18, 2016
seunajia:
I grew into my role, being a software developer in the financial services sector meant I had some autonomy, I reported directly to the MD/CEO/CTO too. I formed a good rapport with my colleagues and bless them they are excellent people too. They think I perform magic, but I don't. Without being conceited, I try to do a good job at always performing. There're no hard and fast rule but;

1. Know and respect your limits.
2. Be amiable, ask about the wellbeing of your colleagues.
3. Be a man of your words, don't talk too much.
4. Be at the top of your game, always.
5. Notice I never used the words junior or subordinate, always, remember, they're your colleagues.
Nice point I relate with that, lots of interesting comments.
Cheers
