Fifa awarded $201m in forfeited funds after corruption probe by US Department of Justice Fifa will receive $201m (£146m) in forfeited funds seized during a corruption probe, the US Department of Justice has announced. More than 50 defendants have been criminally charged since the Department of Justice unveiled its corruption probe in 2015. Twenty-seven people and four corporate entities have pleaded guilty, with two people convicted at trial. The repayment will begin with an initial $32.3m (£23.5m). The money, which was seized from the bank accounts of former officials who were prosecuted for corruption, will be used by the Fifa Foundation, an independent foundation, to help finance football-related projects which, Fifa says, can "positively impact so many people across the football world, especially through youth and community programmes". The 2015 scandal, the biggest in the sport's history, involved collusion between officials from the governing bodies and sports marketing executives, with fraud, bribery, racketeering and money laundering offences committed. It led to the end of Sepp Blatter's 17-year reign as the governing body's president and the election of Gianni Infantino as his successor in February 2016. Several of the defendants were ordered to forfeit assets obtained through criminal activity. Under United States law, the Department of Justice has the authority to distribute the proceeds of forfeited assets to victims of crimes, including to the football organisations that were defrauded. "I am delighted to see that money which was illegally siphoned out of football is now coming back to be used for its proper purposes, as it should have been in the first place," said Infantino. "I want to sincerely thank the US Justice authorities for their efforts in this respect, for their fast and effective approach in bringing these matters to a conclusion, and also for their trust in general. "The truth is that, thanks to their intervention back in 2015, we have been able to fundamentally change Fifa from a toxic organisation at the time, to a highly esteemed and trusted global sports governing body." Jacquelyn M Kasulis, acting US attorney for the Eastern District of New York, said: "Today's announcement confirms that money stolen by corrupt soccer officials and sports marketing executives through fraud and greed will be returned to where it belongs and used to benefit the sport. "From the start, this investigation and prosecution have been focused on bringing wrongdoers to justice and restoring ill-gotten gains to those who work for the benefit of the beautiful game. "Our office, together with our law enforcement partners, will always work to compensate victims of crime." Infantino added that Fifa's co-operation with the Department of Justice was a reflection of the "significant progress" the body had made "in terms of good governance and transparency". "Today, they know that with the Fifa Foundation this money is in good hands and will serve the purpose it is intended for," he said Infantino. "On behalf of all future beneficiaries around the world, I would like to thank the US authorities for the trust placed in Fifa, and we will make sure that these funds are used properly and bring tangible benefits for people who really need it." In authorising this massive payment to Fifa, the Department of Justice is acknowledging the world governing body was the wronged party in the scandal that shamed the game. And while not everyone agrees with its decisions - most recently the Premier League over Fifa's decision to extend South America's international break - and suspicion remains over Infantino's involvement in the European Super League talks he has since distanced himself from - Fifa is, thankfully, a different organisation now than the corrupt and discredited Sepp Blatter regime. Fifa will view this judgement as a line in the sand and its Foundation will be responsible for distributing the money, which should benefit the game worldwide. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/58323327 |

PDP Crisis: Secondus’ supporters protest as two factions lay claim to party leadership SUPPORTERS of the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Uche Secondus, on August 24, staged a protest against the restraining order issued by a Rivers State High Court which suspended him from office. The protest was held amid reports that two factions are laying claim to the party’s leadership. The Deputy National Chairman (South) of the PDP Yemi Akinwonmi was the first to announce that he had taken over the affairs of the party following the August 23 restraining order issued against Secondus. Akinwonmi reportedly cited Section 35 (b) of the PDP Constitution to support his move to take over the affairs of the party. In his first act as acting party chairman, Akinwonmi suspended the meeting of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) indefinitely. The NWC meeting was earlier scheduled for August 24, but Akinwonmi said the meeting had been postponed until further notice to allow for broader consultations in the overall interest of the party. But another faction, including nine members of the NWC, under the leadership of the Deputy National Chairman (North) Senator Suleiman Nazif, defied the earlier announcement by Akinwonmi by holding a meeting on August 24. The Nazif faction also reportedly fixed an emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the party on August 27. As reports of the leadership tussle emerged on August 24, The ICIR observed about a hundred placards-wielding protesters chanting pro-Secondus slogans as they marched around the national headquarters of the PDP at Wadata Plaza in Abuja. Some of the slogans had inscriptions which read, ‘Secondus must finish his tenure,’ ‘PDP is a law abiding party,’ ‘Secondus wiped away corruption in the party,’ ‘Secondus must stay,’0 ‘Our party has made progress under Secondus,’ ‘Greatest betrayal of all time,’ and ‘Don’t destabilise our dear party.’ The placard that read ‘Greatest betrayal of all time’ listed the names of some members of the NWC, including Nazif and National Youth Leader Sunday Ude-Okoye, who are among leaders of the anti-Secondus group, as betrayers. The crisis in the PDP took a turn for the worse on August 23 after a Rivers State High Court presided by Justice O. Gbasam granted an interim injunction restraining Secondus from parading himself as chairman and member of the party. The order followed an ex parte application in suit No: PHC/2183/CS/2021 filed by Messrs Ibeabuchi Ernest Alex, Dennis Nna Amadi, Emmanuel Stephen and Umezirike Onucha against Uche Secondus (1st defendant) and the PDP (2nd defendant). The court also ordered Secondus to refrain from calling, attending or presiding over any meeting of the PDP, or any committee of the party at the ward, local government or state level or calling for any ward, local government or state congress of the party. Secondus was also restrained from setting up committees for congresses or participating in any activity of the PDP whatsoever, whilst on suspension, pending the hearing and determination of the suit. The court order is seen as an immediate victory for a PDP group, backed by Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike, which has been pushing to remove Secondus from office before the party’s national convention. The convention, where Secondus is expected to seek election for a second term, was initially scheduled for December but it was moved forward to October after party stakeholders, including the PDP Governors Forum and Board of Trustees (BOT), deliberated on the crisis in the party at a meeting on August 10. The resolutions reached by the PDP stakeholders at the August 10 meeting was seen as a middle ground arrangement for the pro-Secondus and pro-Wike camps as the embattled national chairman was to remain in office to conduct the national convention, though he lost two months of the duration of his scheduled tenure in office. The stakeholders resolved that Secondus should immediately commence processes towards holding the national convention in two months. However, tensions resurfaced after reports emerged that Secondus was not ready to conduct the national convention in October but insisted on staying on in office until December – the original date of the national convention. The PDP was thrown into crisis after the resignation of seven national officers of the party on August 3 led to calls for Secondus’s removal. PDP’s national convention was scheduled to hold in December but the Wike group wanted a caretaker committee set up to organise the convention. Secondus’ opponents claimed he lacked the competence required to lead the PDP – the national opposition party – to dislodge power from the ruling APC in the 2023 presidential election. https://www.icirnigeria.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Uche-Secondus-PDP-320x184.jpg https://www.icirnigeria.org/pdp-crisis-secondus-supporters-protest-as-two-factions-lay-claim-to-party-leadership/ |

Operatives of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested an Italy-bound passenger, Abibu Miminu, during the outward clearance of passengers on Ethiopian Airways flight to Italy via Addis-Ababa for ingesting illicit drugs at Lagos airport. NDLEA’s Director, Media and Advocacy, Mr Femi Babafemi, said this in a statement made available to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja. He added that the suspect later excreted 68 wraps of heroin while being detained in NDLEA Facility in three excretions in two days. “While under observation at the agency’s facility between Saturday, Aug. 14 and Sunday Aug. 15, the trafficker excreted 68 wraps of heroin in three excretions, all weighing 800grams,” he said. The NDLEA spokesperson also announced the arrest of a major drug dealer wanted for attempting to export 69.65 kilograms of cocaine, heroin and cannabis to the United Kingdom. Babafemi said the drugs were to be exported through the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO) export shed of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, (MMIA), Lagos. He said the suspect was arrested at a church in Ojodu, Ikeja area of Lagos state, adding that operatives of NDLEA had been trailing the wanted drug dealer. He also said the suspect, Mr Stephen Ikeanyionwu, on Sunday, Aug. 15, was traced to a popular pentecostal church at Mike Ajari street, Ojodu Berger. He added that it was there the operatives arrested him after he stepped out of the church service. According to him, his arrest followed the interception of a consignment of illicit drugs weighing 69.65kg going to the UK through the Lagos airport on Aug. 12. “The illegal baggage had been sent to the airport for export through a freight forwarding company, which in turn gave a driver to deliver at the NAHCO export shed. “Following the arrest of the driver, follow up operations and investigations later revealed the true identity of the actual owner of the consignment who was arrested three days later in a sting operation,” he said. In the same vein, narcotic officers of the Directorate of Operation and General Investigation have intercepted illicit drugs at two courier companies in Lagos. Babafemi said 840 grams of Methamphetamine going to Australia and concealed in bolts and 340 grams of Meth hidden in locally made footwears, also going to Australia were intercepted. He added that one kilogram of cocaine coming from Ghana with UK as destination and concealed in four local guitars was also intercepted. “Also seized from one of the courier firms is another 480grams of Meth concealed in foot wears and going to Australia,” he said. Meanwhile, a South Africa returnee, Obi Samuel, was also arrested at the Lagos airport during the inward clearance of Ethiopian Airlines from Addis-Abbaba, for importing 58grams of skunk into Nigeria. Babafemi said the suspect admitted ownership and claimed to be a cannabis smoker during his preliminary interview. https://i0.wp.com/cdn.thenewsnigeria.com.ng/2021/08/Some-of-the-arrested-suspects-e1629646503717.jpg?fit=375%2C352&ssl=1 https://www.thenewsnigeria.com.ng/2021/08/22/alleged-drug-trafficker-excreted-68-wraps-of-heroin-in-ndleas-custody/ |
