Crime › 67 Adara Natives Including Pastor, Village Head Family’ Kidnapped In Kaduna by NwaNimo1(op): 1:35pm On Apr 24, 2021
67 Adara Natives including Pastor, village head family’ Kidnapped with no traces in kaduna

About 67 Adara, the natives of kajuru local government area of Southern part of kaduna state have been reportedly kidnapped by suspected armed Fulani militia.
Southern Kaduna People’s Union (SOKAPU) disclosed this in a statement on Friday and expressed dismay why kaduna state government refused to included the 67 in its daily Security Update uptil now.

The statement issued and signed by the Union’s spokesman Mr Luka Binniyat and available to journalists Friday evening stated that 67 Adara villagers were abducted from Libere Gari Village , Kallah ward, Kajuru LGA in Southern part of Kaduna State last Tuesday night.

He said “For reasons not clear to SOKAPU, Kaduna State government did not include in its Daily Security Update, the abduction of 67 Adara villagers from Libere Gari Village , Kallah ward, Kajuru LGA in Southern part of Kaduna State last Tuesday night by persons identified by the villagers as armed Fulani militia.

“The gunmen who arrived at the village around 11pm went about shooting in the air to scare the villagers as they captured their victims from compound to compound. They spent two hours unchallenged.

“One of the most affected is the village head of Libere, Mr Bala Yero. His wives and children numbering 16 were among the kidnapped. They are made up of 9 women and 6 males mostly children.

“However, 10 of the kidnapped persons were able to escape the following day. No person was killed and no property was destroyed in the Libere Gari crime.
“There are now 48 females, including small girls and 17 males under the criminal custody of the kidnappers.

“The kidnappers are yet to make contact with family members at the time of writing this press statement”, he stated.

He als disclosed that, gunmen attacked Unguwan Mission, Kasuwan Magani, Kajuru LGA, early morning of Friday, around 2am and kidnapped 8 persons, among them a Pastor of the Seventh Day Adventist.

He said the criminals have made contact with some of the family members and are asking for N30 million before their released.

“Last Wednesday two nurses – Afiniki Bako and Grace Nkut – at Idon rural hospital in the same Kajuru LGA were kidnapped, not far from a military checkpoint.

“It could be recalled that a private University, Greenfield University, in Chikun LGA, also part of Southern Kaduna, located about 30 km from Kaduna town on the Kaduna – Abuja expressway was invaded and at least 17 students, mostly girls were kidnapped. The Kidnappers are asking for N800m as ransom.

“Meanwhile, 29 students of Federal School of Forestry, Afaka, Kaduna have now spent over 40 days in captivity in the hands of their kidnappers who are asking for N500m cash as in exchange for their freedom.

“These are just a small part of the daily kidnapping, murder, and arson going on in Kaduna state, especially in the Kajuru and Chikun part of Southern Kaduna.
“Kaduna State government’s competence in battling the crime seems to be in its daily reportage of the evil which is on the rise with each passing day.

“The double standard of Governor Nasir el-Rufai does not seem to help matters at all. It was el-Rufai who in 2016 came up on National Television and defended why he traced killer herdsmen who were carrying out genocide in Southern Kaduna.

“He followed them to their various countries and ‘compensated’ them with the understanding that they would not return to the same crime. He even said he was ready to pay any group planning to kill any Kaduna state indigene if that would make it stop the crime.

“Today, without recanting his earlier unfortunate stand, he is on the forefront of the annihilation of bandits. While SOKAPU does not support that those who are involved in this violence should be spared, a governor must be seen as being proactive in protecting his citizens rather than making utterances that will make the organised criminals dare him by inflicting more harm on helpless citizens.
“Today, there are over 100 communities in Southern Kaduna overran and taken over by armed Fulani militia. He has not done anything to claim them back to the owners.

“In fact, with the hundreds of people killed in Southern Kaduna since 2015 and scores of villages destroyed, el-Rufai himself has confirmed that he has not visited a single attacked Southern Kaduna community.

“We believe that there is an agenda to capture more territories and plant a new Fulani population ahead of the 2023 general elections and we believe that Kaduna State Government under Nasir el-Rufai is culpable for his inaction and lack of interest in our wellbeing.

“SOKAPU believes that with the millions of Naira deducted from the monthly allocation of affected LGAs in the name of security, if channeled to train and empower our youths as discipline vigilante groups, they can assist the police and the military in curtailing this evil which has reached a genocidal proportion. But that won’t happen. And Kaduna is creating more and more ungoverned spaces”, the statement added.

Also lamented that “Fridad makes 24 days of incarceration of 15 Atyap leaders from Atyap Chiefdom in Zangon Kataf LGA in Southern Kaduna in the hands of the Kaduna State Police Command Headquarters without bail or arraignment before a court of law.

The police alleged that the Atyap leaders, among them 85 years old Waje Laah, killed 706 Fulani cows and 75 rams in a single day in Atyap Chiefdom and buried them in a ditch.

“Meanwhile not less than 100 Atyap natives have been killed and about 24 Atyap villages burnt and hundreds of hectares of farmland bearing growing food crops destroyed by Fulani cows since July 2020. Not a single Fulani leader has been called for questioning.

“We are calling on volunteers, legal experts, relevant Civil Society Organisations, Non Governmental Organisations, the international community men and women of conscience to help us secure their release and ask for damages accrued to them, as these villagers are too poor and ignorant to pursue justice for themselves’, it stated.

Despite CBN N5 promo, money sent home by Nigerians abroad drops 75.3% in first quarter

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has disclosed that total direct remittances to Nigeria in the first three months of 2021 dropped by 75.3 percent.

According to CBN, Nigerians sent home $865.4 million as against $35.9 billion reported in the corresponding period of 2020.

Although, January remittance is 65.3 percent higher than $523.5 million recorded between October and December 2020.

Data sourced from the CBN website by Ripples Nigeria on Friday, shows that in January 2021, $185.2 million was sent home, compared to $2.4 billion in the same month in 2020.

Although, the money sent home increased in February to $452.9 million, when compared to $1.15 billion in February 2020 it is a far cry.

Surprisingly, in March when CBN introduced the Naira 4 Dollar promo to boost dollar inflow into the country, direct remittance fell to $227.2 million from the previous month and also 48.9 percent lower to the $444.7 million recorded in the same month last year.

You will recall that CBN promised N5 extra for every dollar received from March 8 and May 8 through licensed International Money Transfer Operators and commercial banks.

It is important to note that Diaspora remittance remains a very important source to increase Nigeria dollar reserves.

While Ripples Nigeria cannot independently confirm if the drop after the promo was a sign of lack of trust, the widening gap between the official and unofficial rate could provide a clue.

As of April 22, the difference between the CBN rate of 381 and the parallel market of 485 stands is N104.

What this means is that while $100 can give you N38,100 from CBN with an additional N100, at the black market the $100 will amount to N48,500.

Politics › Buhari: I Won’t Sack Pantami, Dismisses Critics by NwaNimo1(op): 11:11pm On Apr 22, 2021
President Muhammadu Buhari blasted campaigners for the sack of communications and digital economy minister, Isa Pantami, calling them “cancel campaigners”.

While saying he will not sack Pantami, Buhari gave a long response on why the action, as being campaigned would not be just.

First, he claimed some ICT companies offered money to some media houses to run a smear campaign against Pantami.

He said the campaign was about what Pantami said in the past, when he was in his 20s, echoing Pantami’s own defence at the weekend.

And he added that the campaign was instigated by the people who Pantami might have stepped upon while introducing changes in the ICT sector.

In the final analysis, the President said Pantami will not be dismissed from the cabinet.

“The Administration stands behind Minister Pantami and all Nigerian citizens to ensure they receive fair treatment, fair prices, and fair protection in ICT services”, Buhari said, according to statement released by Garba Shehu.

Read the full statement:

“Today, there is an unfortunate fashion in public discourse that makes leaders in politics, religion, and civil society liable in the present for every statement they have ever made in the past – no matter how long ago, and even after they have later rejected them.

“This insidious phenomenon seeks to cancel the careers of others on the basis of a thing they have said, regardless of when they said it.

“The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami is, currently, subject to a “cancel campaign” instigated by those who seek his removal.

“They do not really care what he may or may not have said some 20 years ago: that is merely the instrument they are using to attempt to “cancel” him. But they will profit should he be stopped from making decisions that improve the lives of everyday Nigerians.

“The Minister has, rightly, apologized for what he said in the early 2000s. The views were absolutely unacceptable then, and would be equally unacceptable today, were he to repeat them. But he will not repeat them – for he has publicly and permanently condemned his earlier utterances as wrong.

“In the 2000s, the Minister was a man in his twenties; next year he will be 50. Time has passed, and people and their opinions – often rightly – change.

“But all discerning Nigerians know this manufactured dispute is nothing to do with the Minister’s prior words, but solely concern his actions in the present.

“This Administration is committed to improving the lives of all Nigerians – and that includes ensuring they are not over-charged or under-protected for those services on which modern life depends.

“The Minister has been leading the charge against illegal data deductions and pricing; he has revolutionized the government’s virtual public engagement to respond to COVID-19 and save taxpayers’ money; he has established ICT start-up centres to boost youth entrepreneurship and create jobs; he has changed policy to ensure locally produced ICT content is used by ministries, starting with his own; and he has deregistered some 9.2 million SIMs – ending the ability for criminals and terrorists to flagrantly use mobile networks undetected.

“In two short years, Minister Pantami has driven the contribution of the ICT sector to the GDP to more than 18 percent, making it one of the top two playing a critical role in the emergence of the economy from the COVID 19-induced recession.

“In putting people first, the Minister and this administration have made enemies.

“There are those in the opposition who see success and want it halted by any means. And there is now well-reported information that alleges newspaper editors rebuffed an attempt to financially induce them to run a smear campaign against the minister by some ICT companies, many of which do indeed stand to lose financially through lower prices and greater consumer protections.

“The government is now investigating the veracity behind these claims of attempted inducement, and – should they be found to hold credence – police and judicial action must be expected.

“The Administration stands behind Minister Pantami and all Nigerian citizens to ensure they receive fair treatment, fair prices, and fair protection in ICT services.

Travel › Passengers Lament Abandonment Of Kano Airport By Foreign Airlines by NwaNimo1(op): 6:50pm On Apr 22, 2021
PASSENGERS traveling on international routes through  Malam Aminu Kano International Airport  (MAKIA) are lamenting the shortage  of foreign airlines operating into the airport.

This is just as the abandonment of the airport has forced business activities to be grounded due to low patronage of passengers while some commercial banks operating there have equally shut down.

Presently, only Ethopian airline has since resumed full operations while other airlines earlier operating there are said to have abandoned the airport  and shifted base to either Abuja or Lagos airports even after the recent reopening of the airport for international operations.

Prior to the outbreak of Coronavirus, foreign carriers flying into Kano airport included; Ethiopian, Egypt Air, Saudi Air and Badr airline.

Information gathered has however, revealed that since the reopening of the airport to international flights by the federal government on April 6th, 2021, only Ethiopian airline has since resumed flights with others yet to return.

Many Kano-based passengers and its environs willing to travel out of the country through the Kano airport have been faced with the challenges of having to travel by road to Abuja or Lagos to connect with other foreign carriers to reach their desired destinations.

Speaking with the Nigerian Tribune, one of the affected passengers, Alhaji Usman Balla said:  “I  usually travel to Abuja by road to book for flight to China, as we all know, one can be kidnapped along the road and also to travel by air will also cost another expenses to be incurred

For Mr John Jacob, another passenger,  he had to travel to Abuja and lodged in a hotel to catch an international flight the following day, since traveling by road from Kano will take about six to eight hours, a situation that often poses threat to his life.

Commenting on the development, a travel agent, Alhaji Mohammed Askira  while describing the situation as worrisome, lamented how many of his colleagues are running at a loss due to low patronage from customers.

Overwhelmed by the challenges, passengers on the Kano route are appealing to the Federal Government to prevail on the foreign carriers to recommence operations into the Northern city.

Politics › Nollywood Actor, Baba Ijesha Arrested For Allegedly Defiling 7-year-old Minor by NwaNimo1(op): 6:25pm On Apr 22, 2021
Popular Nollywood actor, Olarenwaju James, professionally known as Baba Ijesha, has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for defiling a minor.
The spokesman of the command, Muyiwa Adejobi, in a statement released on Thursday said the case of defilement was filed on 19th April, 2021 by one Princess Adekola Adekanya at Sabo Police Station.

It has been transferred to the Gender Unit of the State CID, Panti, Yaba, Lagos for investigation.

There are claims that the actor started sexually assaulting the victim, 14 years, since she was 7 years old.

Adejobi noted that Baba Ijesha confessed to the crime and was also captured by a CCTV camera in the house of the complainant.

The Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, has promised that justice will be done in the matter.
