Politics › Again, FG Govt Plans To Jerk Up Electricity Tariff Amidst Poor Supply by NwaNimo1(op): 10:39am On Apr 27, 2021
The Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has revealed plans to increase electricity tariff again.

This was disclosed in a notice posted on NERC’s website on Monday.

According to NERC, the extraordinary tariff review is as a result of changes in inflation, foreign exchange, gas prices, available generation capacity and capital expenditure.

The commission stated that the review is expected to begin in July.
“The MYTO provides for Minor Reviews (every 6 Months), Major Reviews (every 5 years), and Extraordinary Tariff Reviews in instances where industry parameters have changed from those used in the operating tariffs to such an extent that a review is urgently required to maintain the viability of the industry,” NERC said.

“Further to the above, the Commission held series of Public Hearings and stakeholder consultations in the first quarter of 2020 on the Extraordinary Tariff Review Applications of the eleven (11) electricity distribution companies (“DisCos”) to consider their respective 5-year Performance Improvement Plans (“PIPs”).

“Accordingly, this notice is issued to inform the general public and industry stakeholders of the Commission’s intention to: Conclude the Extraordinary Tariff Review process for the eleven DisCos; Commence the processes for the July 2021 Minor Review of MYTO – 2020 to consider changes in inflation, foreign exchange, gas prices, available generation capacity, and CAPEX required to evacuate and distribute the said available generation capacity in accordance with EPSRA and other extant industry rules.

“This notice is hereby issued in compliance with the provisions of EPSRA, the Business Rules of the Commission and the Regulations on Procedures for Electricity Tariff Reviews in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry to solicit for comments from the general public on the proposed reviews.

“Stakeholders and the general public are invited to send their comments to the Commission within 21 days from the date of this publication.”

In November 2020, DisCos began implementation of a service-based reflective tariff (SRT) structure nationwide after receiving approval from President Muhammadu Buhari.

A month after, the NERC approved an increase in electricity tariff across the country beginning from January 1 — with the exception of customers who are being served less than an average of 12 hours per day in a given month.

Politics › Amid Poverty, El-rufai Raises School Fees From N24,000 Up To N500,000 by NwaNimo1(op): 10:16am On Apr 27, 2021
Despite gripping poverty in Nigeria, particularly in the North, Governor Nasir El-Rufai has increased tuition in all Kaduna tertiary institutions.

According to the World Bank’s Multidimensional Poverty Measure, Nigeria is the largest contributor to multidimensional poverty in sub-Saharan Africa. The region experiences the highest levels of deprivations in multidimensional poverty.

Mr El-Rufai said the increased school fees were to reposition institutions to deliver quality skills and training to tackle 21st-century challenges.

The institutions are Kaduna State University (KASU), Nuhu Bamali Polytechnic, Zaria, Kaduna State College of Education (COE), Gidan Waya, Shehu Idris College of Health Sciences, Makarfi, and Kaduna State College of Nursing and Midwifery.

On Friday, the state complained it spent N25 million monthly on KWASU but the school generated N765.9 million yearly.

The Commissioner of Education, Shehu Makarfi, said KASU was directed to increase the fees “from between N24,000 and N26,000 to a minimum consolidated fee of N150,000.”

The government pegged the minimum fees for National Diploma and Higher National Diploma at a minimum of N75,000 and N100,000, respectively; the National Certificate in Education (NCE) programmes in COE Gidan Waya raised to N75,000.

“We want our tertiary institutions to offer courses like IT, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, satellite technology, and other skills that are in high demand globally.

“Government is ready to invest resources in tertiary institutions as long as they are ready to go along with the dynamics in society and the world at large,” said the commissioner.

Kaduna said it provided free education from pre-primary to senior secondary schools.

He pointed out that KASU Management was finding it difficult to run the school due to inadequate funds.

The commissioner further noted that KASU could not accommodate the quantum of students who applied for various institution programmes due to carrying capacity issues.

He explained, “So, why don’t we create an enabling environment, increase the carrying capacity of KASU for our children to remain at home, learn at home and pay less?

“I want to tell our parents and other stakeholders that despite the increased fees, we are still subsiding compared to what other universities are collecting. Students in our tertiary institutions pay the least fees in this part of the country.”

Students of KASU had rejected the increase during a meeting with the school management on April 22.

Abdulrazak Shuaibu, who spoke on behalf of the students, said the fees rose from N26,000 to N150,000 for students in the Faculty of Arts, Management, and Social Sciences.

Mr Shuaibu, a former President of Kaduna State Students Union, added that students of the Faculty of Medicine from the state would now pay N300,000 as against N24,000 while non-indigenes would pay N500,000.

Politics › BREAKING: Herdsmen Attack Idps Camp, Kill Seven In Benue by NwaNimo1(op): 9:39am On Apr 27, 2021
Seven persons have been confirmed dead, with many others injured, after armed Fulani herdsmen attacked Abagena community housing Internally Displaced Persons camp in Makurdi Local government Area of Benue State.

DAILY POST gathered that angry youths, who were enraged by the killings, took the Makurdi-Lafia road to protest on Tuesday morning, blocking the roads with the dead bodies.

Reacting, the State Governor, Samuel Ortom in a statement, described the attack on the IDPs camp as inhuman, barbaric and unacceptable.

The Governor called on President Muhammadu Buhari to live up to his responsibility of protecting Nigerians.

He lamented that in the last two weeks, over seventy persons had been killed in Makurdi Local Government alone, while various communities across Benue were suffering from same militia herdsmen.

Ortom also called for urgent action against the activities of militia herdsmen across the country.

“If the Federal Government had taken the issue of militia herders seriously, it wouldn’t have escalated to this level,” he said

Politics › Re: My Dilemma - Why I Have Delayed My Full Support And Membership For IPOB by NwaNimo1(m): 6:27pm On Apr 26, 2021
GodHatesBigots:
Folks I am deeply depressed. This weekend I spent most of my time on this forum and elsewhere debating and talking on matters relating to IPOB, ESN and the agitation for Biafra. And while I attended the IPOB fund raising event, I listened in but did not contribute a kobo. I am also not a member of IPOB but I sympathise with most of their concerns and really hope we can achieve them. I admire Nnamdi Kanu, in fact I love him - he is a warrior and he loves his people.

But there is a problem - I am in a dilemma. How can I contribute money to IPOB knowing that the money will go into the purchase of deadly arms that may kill my relatives in the army and police, or my friends in the army and police, or my old school mates in the army and police.

I won’t be able to sleep at night knowing that my contributions may have led to their untimely death. Conversely, I am gravely emotionally injured when I see the massacre of my people by Fulani herdsmen, the military, and police and sometimes I almost want to join the fight to destroy those who were guilty of genocide. It's hard for me and I almost weeping for my country and for my people. I don't want to see another innocent person in the force gunned down for doing their duty and I also do not want to see images of my fellow black people fleeing bandits in the North and herdsmen in the South.

No doubt something needs to be done, no doubt we are ruled by a terrorist government, no doubt we are not one nation and no doubt we need a final solution. However, I am unable to contribute money that may be attached to the shedding of blood of innocent people.

Note: If my money was purely for the destruction of Fulani herdsmen, including their terrorist supporters in the military or police, I would have emptied my bank account to IPOB, but not for the innocents or those doing their duty.

I need your advice and opinion.

Thanks, and God bless.
