Former Governor of Delta State, James Onanefe Ibori’s London trial has developed a new twist at the weekend as the British Police have reportedly paid Ibori’s former counsel, Mr. Bhadresh Gohil, the sum of £20,000 in an out-of-court settlement. Gohil, former United Kingdom lawyer to Ibori, received the settlement from the Crown Prosecution Service after being unlawfully deprived of his liberty over the Ibori case. The ‘extraordinary’ payment is just the latest turn in a legal case where the ‘hunter seems to have become the hunted’ as the police investigators and British Crown Prosecutors are now facing allegations of corruption in the police and a cover-up of key evidence. According to report, the BBC celebrated the story at the weekend, with a dispatch entitled ‘Ibori’s lawyer awarded 20,000 Pounds … as British prosecution admits manipulation charge. The payment according to report, “is just the latest twist in a legal case that has led to investigations into allegations of police corruption and a cover-up of key evidence.” Actually, this payment to Gohil may be a direct result of the pressure the mainstream British media-BBC to The Guardian, London Times, The Mail, The Telegraph-mounted on the London Metropolitan Police and the courts to ensure that allegations of injustice and court manipulation by Ibori’s lawyers are fully looked into so that the cherished British jurisprudence tradition is maintained. The report stated that presently, all the investigators and the prosecutors in the Ibori case and its associated cases, especially the lead prosecutor, Ms. Sasha Wass, Queen’s Counsel (QC the British equivalent of Senior Advocate of Nigeria) have been allegedly dropped. The two central prosecutors in the case- Sasha Wass QC and Esther Schutzer-Weissmann-were unceremoniously dismissed from the Ibori case in March 2016. The case, accordingly, was removed from the Met Police and handed to the National Crime Agency. All the original investigating officers have all been removed from the case. Last week, the police paid Gohil for an infringement committed last November. He was expected to be released then but less than a week before the release date, Wass successfully applied for this to be revoked and Gohil was detained for three more weeks. So Gohil went to court and accused the prosecution of blatant lies to mislead the court. Gohil, who has been seeking to have his convictions overturned since 2012, has been allegedly the target of an on-going smear campaign by the Met police and the Crown Prosecution to derail the appeal. His defence team has consistently claimed that the prosecution has, by extending the detention and other acts, “manipulated dishonestly and acted in bad faith.” The prosecutors have been allegedly accused of misleading the Court of Appeal. The Crown Prosecution Service on July 21, 2016, now agreed to pay Gohil £20,000 in settlement of this one initial claim and to pay his legal costs, as he was unlawfully detained for 33 days. With this victory, Gohil’s team is now preparing wider malicious prosecution actions. His payment by the British Police has indicated that the police recognise wrong-doing on their path; and this confirms the bad conduct allegation Ibori’s legal teams have leveled against the police. The report noted that the police have set up an internal investigation into the allegations; its result will be ready by late August this year. The Department of Professional Standards at the division within the Metropolitan Police responsible for rooting out police corruption has spent in excess of £1million on the investigation to allegedly silence Gohil, a source close to the extraordinary events, stated. http://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2016/07/25/hope-for-ibori-as-his-lawyer-wins-in-court/? |

The family of the abducted monarch of Iba town, Ojo Local Government Area, Lagos, Yushau Oseni, say the kidnappers have contacted them demanding N500 million as ransom for his release. One of the king’s daughters and former Chairperson, Iba Local Government Council, Mrs Ramota Oseni, said the abductors had contacted the family since July 20. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the74-year -old traditional ruler, was abducted in his Palace at Iba on July 16 at about 8 p.m. He had celebrated his 40 years on the throne on Nov. 22, 2015. Ramota said the family decided not to make the ransom public since then for security reasons, as they thought they could resolve it internally. She said the family had negotiated with the abductors to pay N40 million which was not available but had contacted the state government to augment so that he would be released. According to her, it was to the family dismay that the state government, through the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy matters had not responded since then. “I immediately called the commissioner to inform him of the development and to get across to the state government. “But subsequent calls to his phone since then were unanswered and he did not get back to us either,’’ she said. Ramota said the family also called on the Commissioner of Police, Fatia Owoseni but to no avail. The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni in a telephone interview with newsmen, said it was not advisable to make the ransom public. Owoseni said such issues when discussed in the public domain would encourage the kidnappers. He said that investigation was ongoing to rescue the monarch and disclosing the strategy of the police toward this would jeopardise their effort. Meanwhile, the Iba Youth Forum had planned to stage a protest to demand the release of their community’s ruler. They barricaded the Iba expressway early in the morning on Friday until one of monarch’s sons appealed to them to maintain peace. The youth resorted to accusing the state government of neglecting the matter and being unresponsive to the ransom for his release. “After all, the state government had paid about N200 million for the release of a Chinese expatriate kidnapped in Epe sometime ago. “So, why that of a first class king who is aged 74 different?’’ They also accused the police of withdrawing its personnel from the Palace and town, three days after the incident. Mr Owolabi Ashade, a former Supervisory Counsellor, Iba Local Government, said the abduction of the king was a bad omen. He said that members of the community had not been sleeping since the ugly incident. Ashade, who spoke on behalf of the youth and 24 communities in Ibaland appealed to the state government to ensure the monarch’s release. He also debunked speculations that Iba indigenes ordered the non-indigenes to vacate their town, stating that they were all one and that people should go about their businesses. “We urge the government to beef up security in the town, as the police had withdrawn its men,’’ he said. Meanwhile, joint prayers were held by the Muslim and Christian groups for the safe release of the local king. The Chief Imam of Iba, said the Jumat service was dedicated for his safe return, adding that as his presence was needed for continuous piloting of the kingdom and quick recovery of his wife, Ganiyat. According to him, such incidents have never happened since the existence of the town as Oseni is the ninth ruler of the kingdom. Also the Council of traditional rulers in Lagos State visited to sympathise with the Iba palace and held a close session. Among the rulers are the traditional rulers of Isolo, Onigando of Igando, Onijanikin of Ijanikin, Oba of Isheri, Amuwo Odofin, Elegbe of Egbe and Oloto of Oyo among others. India on Friday mounted a massive search and rescue operation for an Indian Air Force plane that went missing with 29 people on board over the Bay of Bengal. With concern mounting hours after its disappearance, five surveillance aircraft and 13 navy and coastguard ships launched the search for the aircraft, which vanished shortly after take-off from the southern city of Chennai. The aircraft was on its way to Port Blair, the capital of the remote Andaman and Nicobar islands. “Full scale search & rescue launched to look for IAF AN 32 overdue at Port Blair since 1130 hrs. Max assets being deployed at earliest,” the defence ministry tweeted. The Russian-built Antonov AN-32 military transport plane was carrying service personnel and six crew members as it undertook a routine courier service to the Indian islands. The last contact with the plane was made around 15 minutes after take-off from Tambaram Air Force Station on the outskirts of Chennai, an IAF spokesman said. “A search operation is on. The plane was airborne at 8:30 am (0300 GMT)and was supposed to land at Port Blair at 11:30,” Wing Commander Anupam Banerjee said. The AN-32, equipped with navigational aids, are the IAF’s workhorse aircraft and capable of flying for up to four hours without refuelling. An IAF source told AFP the radar data from the missing aircraft showed it making a sharp left turn before rapidly losing altitude. “We are keeping our fingers crossed. Let’s hope and pray for the best,” he said, requesting anonymity. Retired Air Marshal Anil Chopra said searching for an aircraft in an ocean was complex and that knowledge of the last known position of the plane would be critical for any breakthrough. “Unfortunately the radar cover in Indian east coast does not cover full area… As time elapses uncertainty and risk increases,” he posted on Twitter. “Searching an aircraft in an ocean is as complex as finding a ping pong ball on Siachen glacier,” he tweeted, referring to the Himalayan glacier. – Poor safety record – The Indian Air Force, which relies heavily on Russian-made equipment and has around 100 AN-32s in its fleet, has been blighted by a poor safety record. In one of the worst disasters involving an AN-32 in India, 20 people on board died while three civilians were burnt to death when the plane crashed near a New Delhi airport in 1999. And in 2013, all 20 people on board a military helicopter were killed when it crashed in northern India. The Indian air force has gradually been getting rid of some of its older planes, some of which date back to the 1960s. Experts have warned India’s delay in revamping its outdated military aircraft threatens national security, with some of the fleet virtually on their last legs. New deals have been mired in bureaucratic wrangles, most notably the agreement to buy 36 Rafale fighter jets from France’s Dassault Aviation, which has been pending since 2012. India is the world’s largest arms importer, with the US its number one supplier. The South Asian nation has been trying to develop its own warplanes but delays and technical shortcomings have marred progress. http://punchng.com/indian-air-force-plane-goes-missing-29-board/?
