Gumi’s investigation and arrest will end banditry in North-West, group tells security agencies The investigation and subsequent arrest of controversial Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, will end the spate of banditry in the North-West. The National Inter-Faith Movement, which made this known in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja, also said Gumi must explain his relationship with the bandits, especially following the arrest of his media consultant and ally Tukur Mamu. Mamu, a newspaper publisher, negotiated the release of some of the hostages in the March 2022 train abduction in Kaduna where large sums of money exchanged hands. The alleged terrorist accomplice who was arrested at Cairo International Airport on his way to Saudi Arabia for Lesser Hajj, was deported back and then picked up by the Department of States Services at the Kano International Airport. Mamu is currently in court over alleged links to terrorism. Commending the DSS for the arrest, the National Inter-Faith Movement said relative peace has returned to the North-West, especially the troubled Abuja-Kaduna expressway since Mamu was nabbed. The group, in a statement signed by Rev. Amos Adah, it’s National President, however, urged the security agencies to go a step further to arrest Gumi. According to Adah, the Kaduna-based cleric is Mamu’s boss, noting that the journalist may have been acting based on his instructions. The Reverend said Gumi must explain to Nigerians his compassion for terrorists and state categorically how he has benefitted from insecurity. Rev Adah said the controversial cleric’s provocative position after Mamu’s arrest again proved that he is a person of interest. “We have followed with keen interest the investigation and arrest of Mamu by the DSS. We must say that this proves that our security agencies are working without many words. The DSS also acted timely to take Mamu to court,” Adah said. “This is a smart move in the right direction. Any individual or group who has decided to unleash anguish on fellow humans must be made to pay. On behalf of other Christian leaders in Kaduna and the entire northwest who have suffered from bandits, we say thank you to the intelligence community. ” However, they must not rest on their oars. If there is evidence to tie down Mamu, certainly there will be more linked to his master, Gumi. Thus we charge our gallant officers to take the next brave step to arrest and prosecute Gumi. “Gumi has never hidden his love for bandits, so much that he once called for amnesty. These are people who killed and maimed thousands of unarmed civilians; women and children including our family members. “Consequently, we demand the immediate arrest and interrogation of Gumi who, by now, should be a person of interest to all intelligence and law enforcement agencies. He must tell Nigerians all he knows about the attack on the train which led to the death and kidnap of countless citizens from whom large sums were collected as ransom. “Gumi is now weaponising falsehood to incite Islamic fanatics against the Nigerian state through his sermons in mosques. To divert the attention of the security agencies, he already constituted himself in a court of law to exonerate his mentee. The security agents must act fast”. https://authorityngr.com/2022/09/15/gumis-investigation-and-arrest-will-end-banditry-in-north-west-group-tells-security-agencies/ https://authorityngr.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/images-2022-09-15T192754.750.jpeg |

Indicted internet fraudster Ramon ‘Hushpuppi’ Abbas has employed the services of top attorney John Iweanoge in a bid to abridge his impending jail sentence from 11 years as suggested by United States prosecutors. ![]() Mr Iweanoge is a top Washington D.C. criminal defence attorney popular among Nigerian suspects charged in Virginia and Maryland, especially. In a pro hac vice application filed before the United States District Court in the Central District of California and obtained by Peoples Gazette, Mr Abbas named Mr Iweanoge as his attorney. “APPLICATION of Non-Resident Attorney John O. Iweanoge, II to Appear Pro Hac Vice on behalf of Defendant Ramon Olorunwa Abbas (Pro Hac Vice Fee – $500 Fee Paid, Receipt No. ACACDC-33979986) Filed by Defendant Ramon Olorunwa Abbas. (Attachments: # (1) Proposed Order G-64 Order for Pro Hac Vice Admission) (Khouri, Michael),” the document said. The pro hac vice application allows the addition of an attorney to a case in a jurisdiction in which they are not licensed to practice. Mr Iweanoge, whose law offices are located in Washington, DC, will be now be able to defend Mr Abbas in court without committing unauthorised practice of law. Mr Iweanoge had defended now-imprisoned Nigerian fraudster Obinwanne ‘Invictus’ Okeke. Mr Okeke was sentenced to 10 years in prison for his involvement in a computer-based intrusion fraud scheme that caused about $11 million in losses to his victims. Mr Abbas’s actions come as his sentencing hearing is slated for September 21. The Gazette reported on Thursday that his attorney Louis Shapiro and U.S. officials sparred in court as Mr Abbas tries to delay his sentencing until November. Mr Shapiro argued that Mr Abbas would be unable to prepare for his sentencing hearing without all the documents relating to the Juma Case. The charges on the Juma case had been dropped by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in line with a plea bargain deal. Prosecutors, led by Khaldoun Shobaki, maintained that there was no reason to “further delay the already long-delayed sentencing in this case,” adding that Mr Abbas admitted playing a leading role in the scheme when he pleaded guilty on April 20, 2021. Mr Shobaki had asked a federal judge to sentence Mr Abbas to 11 years in prison and three years of supervised release for his role in a multinational conspiracy that earned him millions of dollars between 2019 and 2020. Mr Shobaki suggested that Mr Abbas should be asked to pay $1.7 million in restitution, $500,000 in fines, and $100 in administrative fees ahead of his sentencing. Mr Abbas had previously tried to seek a release on humanitarian grounds, but Judge Otis D. Wright declined his pleas for failing to comply with extant court rules. Mr Abbas has been in custody since his arrest in Dubai and transfer to the United States in June 2020. https://gazettengr.com/hushpuppi-hires-invictus-obis-lawyer-in-last-minute-push-to-avoid-11-years-in-jail/ https://gazettengr.com/wp-content/uploads/Hushpuppi.png |
