Change being one of the hardest thing to achieve in any setting can be a good or bad thing depending how it's managed and rolled out.

Resisting to change should never be an option but how best to intergrate change with minimal fuss should always be the order of the day.

Ask yourself, what needs changing, what benefits will this change bring and how do i go about changing them
without moving away from the fundamental bedrock of what nairaland was to built to achieve.

Not a bad idea.

In addition each region should have it's police force and control it's resources. Only a percentage of their earnings should be sent to Abuja.

PoliticsZambian Firm To Purchase Nigerian Power Companies by OAM4J(op): 1:52am On Oct 04, 2011
Zambian firm bids for Nigerian power companies

Zambia’s power distributor to the mines, Copperbelt Energy Corporation, is planning to borrow to purchase two of Nigeria’s power distribution firms scheduled for privatisation.

The distribution arm of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria has been split into 11 different units valued at about $100m each.

The consortia that CEC is in have been shortlisted to buy at least two of them, a senior official of the company told Reuters on the sidelines of an investor conference in Johannesburg.

Nigeria’s power sector reform is aimed at improving efficiency and cutting persistent electricity outages.

Besides the Zambian company’s interest, Ghana’s Volta River Authority and the Kenya Electricity Generation Company have also expressed interest in bidding for some power generation firms. VRN is bidding for three hydro stations – Shiroro, Kainji and Jebba – slated for concession; while KenGen had also signified interest in Afam, Geregu, Sapele and Ughelli thermal power plants.

“We still have some leverage on our balance sheet. We can raise some money through the balance sheet and then we can do a rights issue depending on how good the deal is,” CEC’s Director of Corporate Finance, Mutale Mukaka, said.

“The first call is the balance sheet, and thereafter, if we need more, we can leverage it through bringing in more equity in the business,” he added.

Mukuka said that the CEC also expected electricity demand to exceed the pre-crisis level of 540 megawatts in at least 18 months as new mines come on stream and existing operations expand.

Africa’s top copper producer expects at least two new mining operations to begin in coming months. These are the Brazilian VALE’s Konkola North mine and the Muliashi mine owned by China Nonferrous Metals Company Limited.

“With all these projects coming on stream and taking up power, definitely that will call for additional load,” Mukuka told Reuters.

“Each of the existing operations is also trying to maximise copper production and take advantage of the price,” he said.

Zambia has vast high-grade reserves of the metal and expects output to more than double to around two million tonnes by 2015.

Be patient with my administration, Uduaghan tells Deltans

By Austin Ogwuda
Asaba— DELTA State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, has called on Deltans to be patient as his administration was repositioning the state’s economy with a view to tackling youth unemployment and achieving a robust economy that will be less dependent on oil.

He gave the assurance on his facebook chat with his fans, as part of the activities to mark the nation’s 51st independence anniversary in the state.

He reiterated that unemployment remained the greatest challenge to his administration, which was  why he decided to partner with the private sector to create job opportunities for the unemployed.

Uduaghan said: “I want Deltans to be patient. My administration will create jobs for our youths. The construction of infrastructure takes time. We are doing our best to develop more of them in order to empower our people.”

On road rehabilitation, the governor said: “Delta State Government is committed to the construction of roads because of its great agricultural potentials. Work will begin in earnest after the rain and it will be completed hopefully before the next rainy season.

“As for marketing our administration’s programmes, we are re-strategising so that people will know more of the programmes such as the free maternal healthcare for pregnant women and children under five years; free examination fees for SS3 students; scholarship for different categories of beneficiaries, among others,” he said in response to a question by a fan.

The fans raised issues bordering on youth unemployment, roads, flood, sanitation, education, among others.

Meanwhile, the State Government had said it had concluded arrangement to raise N100 billion from the capital market to improve the infrastructural base of the state.

BusinessCement Price Fall: Dangote To Construct Rail Lines by OAM4J(op): 1:29am On Oct 04, 2011
Cement: Dangote to construct rail lines from factories

The Dangote Group has said it will soon construct rail tracks from all its cement factories to the national railway lines to reduce the cost of transportation of the product.

The Managing Director, Dangote Cement Terminal in Lagos, Mr. Akin Adesokan, disclosed this on Sunday when he conducted distributors round the Dangote Cement Factory in Ibese, Ogun State.

He said the project was necessary because the cost of transporting bulky goods such as cement in the country was still a challenge.

Adesokan said Dangote would also establish a vessel freight firm to boost the exportation of goods to the member states of the Economic Community of West African States.

He said the move was to forge a strong bilateral trade relationship amongst the ECOWAS member countries.

Adesokan said, “The challenge is taking our goods from the factory to the ports, and since there is no railway system, it makes transportation of bulky goods burdensome.’’ The official said Dangote had invested heavily in haulage because the company had bought over 2,000 trucks to distribute cement to all depots in the country.

He said, “This is our own Corporate Social Responsibility and no other company has done this. The price will definitely come down because the Chairman of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, has the interest of Nigerians at heart.

“He wants to bring down the price of cement to the barest minimum so that everybody can afford it. The factory in Ibese has the capacity to produce six million tonnes of cement per annum and it is to bring cement to every part of the South-West region.”

Adesokan added, “Before now, we cannot bring cement from Obajana down to the South-West. But, with this factory now, it will be a thing of the past.

“From Ibese, we can take cement to Ibadan, Oyo, Ogun and all other parts of the South-West region.”

PoliticsNigerians Killed Around Gaddafi’s Hometown by OAM4J(op): 1:25am On Oct 04, 2011
Nigerians killed near Gaddafi’s hometown

Three Nigerians, alleged to be fighting alongside the soldiers of the ousted Libyan leader, Col. Muamar Gaddafi, have been killed by the National Transitional Council fighters close to Sirte, the ousted leader’s hometown.

Spain-based Hamada Radio International monitored in Kaduna on Monday listed the three Nigerians killed as 33-year-old Ugochukwu Okafor; Emeka Aloysius Mohammed, 33; and Braimoh Robinson Garba, 30.

The report also claimed that the Nigerian Union in Libya alleged that the Nigerian government had abondoned its consular responsibility to evacuate stranded Nigerians in the war-torn North African country.

The report said, “Some of the Nigerians were shown on a BBC programme presented by Zainab Bedawi over the weekend. Despite the recognition given the NTC by President Goodluck Jonathan, Nigerians and other black Africans have been subject of attack by the rebel forces.

“An NTC source said the hostility against Nigerians might not be unconnected with the belief that Gaddafi’s followers are being sheltered in Kano and some Northern Nigerian cities.

“The most recent case was the arrival of family members of the former Libyan Ambassador to Nigeria, late Mohammed Sherrefedeen, who held both Libyan and Nigerian nationality and was a fluent Hausa speaker.”

PoliticsReleases All Our Members, Then We Dialogue - Boko Haram by OAM4J(op): 1:21am On Oct 04, 2011
Boko Haram gives single condition for talks

The violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram, has said that it is ready for dialogue with the Federal Government. But the sect says this will only happen if the government releases all its members in detention.

The proposed talks, however, might not lead to the final solution that government had long searched for as the sect’s spokesman, Abu Qaqa, said that it would only be “a temporary measure for peace.”

Qaqa’s statement, issued on behalf of the sect on Sunday, was quoted in a News Agency of Nigeria report.

The statement reads, “Our position remains the establishment of Sharia Law in all Muslim states in Nigeria.

“But as a temporary measure for peace, we will accept to talk with government only when all our members in captivity all over the states are released.”

However, an Anglican Bishop has warned the Federal Government not to negotiate with the sect, saying talks will only “encourage gangsterism and terrorism in the country.”

The Bishop of the Anglican Communion, Calabar Diocese, Rev. Tunde Adeleye, spoke in the Cross River State capital even as gunmen suspected to be members of the sect shot three people at a market in Maiduguri, Borno State on Monday.

Qaqa said the sect, which currently engages the Federal Government in a campaign of violence, had the list of its members arrested by the Police, the State Security Service and other security agencies. Last week, the sect denied a part of the report of the Presidential Committee on Security Challenges in the North-East that says it is ready for talks.

The committee headed by Ambassador Gaji Galtmari submitted its report to the Federal Government two weeks ago.

Qaqa said the Galtmari panel never met with the group.

The sect said, “We only heard the story in the media, nobody contacted us throughout the sitting of the committee. So, it is wrong for them to recommend dialogue with us when they did not make any effort to meet with us.

“The idea of appointing the Sultan of Sokoto as a mediator between us and the government is also not acceptable to us because the Sultan is not the authentic Muslim leader in Nigeria.”

The Agence France Presse, which reported the killings in Maiduguri, said it was confirmed by the Borno State police commissioner, Simeon Midenda.

The commissioner was quoted as saying, “I have received report of an attack this morning by suspected Boko Haram gunmen in Baga market where a tea seller, a drug store owner and a passer-by were shot dead by the attackers.

“The fact that nothing was taken from the tea seller who was shot in the chest and the head and the drug store owner rules out robbery.”

The market is frequented by traders from Chad, Niger and Cameroon. There have been no arrests in connection with the attack, he said. The attack brings to eight the number of people killed in the city in the last two days by suspected Islamists after weeks of a lull in Boko Haram-instigated bomb and shooting attacks.

Five people were killed on Independence Day on Saturday, in two separate attacks, a spokesman for a special military unit in Maiduguri also told AFP.

In one of them, attackers used explosives and gunfire to target an army patrol near a wedding in the city, killing at least three civilians, the military said on Sunday.

In the second incident, a butcher and his assistant were shot dead by gunmen in Maiduguri.

Adeleye, at a press conference heralding the synod of the diocese, said that holding talks with the Boko Haram Sect was not the solution to the problem.

The cleric said, “We do not agree that one of the solutions to this problem is to have dialogue or a round table talk with the people involved. If the Federal Government starts to talk or plan to treat them (Boko Haram) the same way the Niger-Delta militants were treated, then we must say that it will be a bad precedent.

“This may encourage gangsterism and terrorism in this country and the Federal Government will need to keep discussing with everybody or group threatening the peace of the country.”

Attacks on military barracks, police facilities and drinking joints in Maiduguri and other towns in the north as well as the Federal Capital Territory by the violent sect, said to be founded in Maiduguri, have claimed at least 750 lives.
