thelastPope: When did the whole Lagos become one big market? I dont understand this argument honestly!Since the whole Lagos became the subject of Oba of Lagos which preceded the colonial era. Afam4eva: I have respect for traditional rulers but not to the extent of them infringing on my rights especially as the consitution does not give them such rights. The Iyalojas of Lagos are Installed by the Oba of Lagos like all other chiefs in the palace after due consultations with stakeholders. The Markets Iyalojas and her officers are mostly elected by their fellow market women. Local Governments work with these Iyalojas and their team to enforce law and order because they are closer to the traders and marketers. It is the same way Lagos state is working with Ladipo market executives that we all read about recently to enforce law and order. |
Afam4eva: I know her influence supersedes Tinubu's political career but she was not an elected government official, so she has no power whatsoever over anybody or thing. The constituion is supreme.Does that also mean you have no respect for our traditional rulers since they are no longer the government of the day? Anyways Iyalojas and her team are part of Local government recognized market administrators. You might need to confirm at your nearest Local government office. |
Afam4eva: I know her influence supersedes Tinubu's political career but she was not an elected government official, so she has no power whatsoever over anybody or thing. The constituion is supreme.read the explanations given in previous pages: OAM4J: Iyaloja literally mean the Mother of the Market. Virtually every market in Yorubaland has an Iyaloja. Then you have the Iyaloja chieftancy title that comes from the palace who heads all the market-Iyalojas and by extension becomes the leader of all the markets women under the influence of the particular palace.Even if she was nobody, but just a trader in a market, those around her stall will close their stalls for a period of time to honour her. It is the culture of Yorubas. It simply means they feel the loss of life is to be respected than the profit they will make from their sales in one day. |
Afam4eva: If she was the head of the market then it may be understandable but i want to know if the market people were forced or they just chose to...For instance, if i sell tomato in a market and i choose to go to the market on that day, what will happen? She was not just the mother of Tinubu, long before Tinubu became known, joined NADECo, became a senator and later a governor, there was a powerful Iyaloja of Lagos, Alhaja Abibat Mogaji. You might need to read up on the functions and powers of an Iyaloja though. A lot of people think she became influential because she was Tinubu's mother whereas this woman had been dining with kings and head of states long before Tinubu became anything. |
omonnakoda: That is your own account some people believe there are witches and wizards so you are entitled to your view. When that is different from others' or you seek to persuade them otherwise you need to present evidence. That you are ignorant of the role, position, responsibilities and powers of market leaders called Iyaloja does not erase their existence. You only need to educate yourself. Every market in Yorubaland busy and disorganized as it might look has an administration that manages it beside the government and this market administration is headed by Iyaloja. They make and enforce the market bylaws. I have lived in at least in 4 Yoruba states to know this is a common scenario. If you doubt me, walk into any market in any Yorubaland and ask after the Iyaloja, if you are not shown one, come back here and give us the name and the location of the market. As per Yoruba history and common culture/heritage, pick for yourself a Yoruba history book or get an history teacher and stop assuming things. |
Interesting read! |
omonnakoda: Not everywhere and Iyaloja /Oloja means different things to different Yorubas e.g it could mean simply King or Queen and not "leader of market women" as you seem to be saying Abibatu Mogaji was leader or Market women's associations in Western Nigeria and there is no precedence for that or how to mourn her demiseAre you sure you are a Yoruba? (No pun intended) Iyaloja literally mean the Mother of the Market. Virtually every market in Yorubaland has an Iyaloja. Then you have the Iyaloja chieftancy title that comes from the palace who heads all the market-Iyalojas and by extension becomes the leader of all the markets women under the influence of the particular palace. Abibat Mogaji was the title holder of Iyaloja of Lagos from the palace of Oba of Lagos till her death. Iyalode and Iyaloja are two powerful women positions in every Yoruba kingdom. |
omonnakoda: There is Nothing Yoruba about this ? Can you tell us the name of ONE ,(JUST ONE EXAMPLE PLEASE) When a market leader died and markets were shut down,The name of the woman and her town! I agree it is nothing to do with Tinubu but there is no such tradition. This woman was the market leader when Awo was jailed and was very influential then for a long time before and after. Before her I do not even know that there was a tradition of "MARKET LEADERS" not to talk of for mourning their demiseWhenever a king or an Iyaloja dies in any Yoruba town, the markets under them are closed for a day or more in their honour. This has been a practice from time memorial. |
ACM10: Going by your assertion as I highlighted, no comment should be hidden here because it's someone's opinion. But the rule must be applied. I wonder what this forum will look like if everyone goes about expressing personal opinion without instrument of sanction designed to bring about decorum. Afam, I know that you are afraid of taking decision that will put you in conflict with OAM4J cos he has succeeded in intimidating you guys. That's why you want another mod to confirm what is obvious. A comment you described as bad taste. Can't you just grow balls and do your job?Ordinarily I wouldn't have bothered responding to you but for others reading. So because Afam didn't agree with you and did what you want means he is being intimidated? How is it possible for a mod to intimidate another mod when he doesn't have the power of admin? Point is, the post you reported is on topic, he gave his opinion why what the OP was advocating for will not work, you, I and many others might disagree with with him but he is entitled to his opinion as long as his opinion does not break any rule. He made other posts which were found to be against the rules on the same thread and necessary actions were taken. If you think we don't know our job, I will advice you to write admin; perhaps he will engage you to come and train the moderators. Cheers. |
