Senate Condemns Sit at Home Order in a South East The Senate has condemned in totality the sit at home order in the South east and the nefarious activities of the gang leader of a notorious group Simon Ekpa. It also urges the federal government to collaborate with the Finnish government to extradite Simon Ekpa for prosecution. The resolutions are sequel to a motion sponsored by Senator Osita Izunaso, Senate presiding officers and all the senators from the south east geopolitical zone which enumerated the human and economic losses recorded as a result of the illegal sit at home order. Senate calls for thorough investigation by relevant stakeholders to bring the other sponsors to book. |

Information filtering in from the Republic of Niger indicates some unpleasant developments around the country's highest political leadership. It should be quite clear to all players in the Republic of Niger that the leadership of the ECOWAS Region and all lovers of democracy around the world will not tolerate any situation that incapacitates the democratically-elected government of the country. The ECOWAS leadership will not accept any action that impedes the smooth functioning of legitimate authority in Niger or any part of West Africa. I wish to say that we are closely monitoring the situation and developments in Niger and we will do everything within our powers to ensure democracy is firmly planted, nurtured, well rooted and thrives in our region. I am in close consultation with other leaders in our region, and we shall protect our hard-earned democracy in line with the universally acceptable principle of constitutionalism. As the Chairperson of ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, I state without equivocation that Nigeria stands firmly with the elected government in Niger and equally conveys the absolute resolve of leaders in our sub-region that we shall not waiver or flinch on our stand to defend and preserve constitutional order. Bola Ahmed Tinubu President, Federal Republic of Nigeria and Chairman, ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government July 26, 2023 |

In line with the current realities in the country and commitment of our administration to ameliorate the effects of removal of fuel subsidy on the well-being of the good people of Ogun State, we have approved the following measures for immediate implementation: 1. Cash palliative of N10,000 for each public servant including pensioners to enable workers to cope with the economic shocks occasioned by the removal of fuel subsidy for 3 months in the first instance with effect from July 2023. 2. Approval of hazard allowance for all health and medical personnel in the State. 3. Approval of peculiar allowance for public servants in the State. 4. Immediate release of Letters of Promotion in respect of 2021 and 2022. 5. Payment of March and April 2023 leave bonuses for public servants in the State. 6. Immediate cash-backing for the quarterly payment of gratuities to pensioners. 7. All our Ministries, Departments and Agencies are to work out modalities of ensuring that 20% of their staff strengths are off-duty daily to ease the effect of the recent increase in fuel price among public servants. 8. Commencement of food palliatives to the vulnerable (rice, garri, beans, maize etc). 9. Furthermore, Gateway Trading Company has been directed to ensure the establishment of distribution outlets across the state, while items must be sold at the rate obtainable before the fuel price increase. 10. Also, fertilizers and other farm inputs are to be supplied to farmers at subsidized and controlled prices. 11. Other measures include the commencement of conversion of State Mass Transit buses to CNG including staff buses and current public transportation buses in circulation to reduce the cost of transportation by charging rates comparable to what was obtained before deregulation. 12. Immediate Road Infrastructure Intervention, with all the local governments working with Community Development Associations and Community Leaders to submit three roads that require immediate intervention as part of the palliative programmes and support for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises through Special Schemes to boost production capacity and employment generation. - Gov. Dapo Abiodun [Ogun State] |

TROOPS RAID IPOB CAMPS IN ANAMBRA WEST, SOUTH, RECOVER ARMS, ARREST NINE BRIGANDS In the ongoing clearance operations to ensure peace and security in South East Nigeria, troops of 302 Regiment operating under 82 Division of the Nigerian Army in conjunction with Anambra Vigilante Group have destroyed camps belonging to fighters of the proscribed Indigenous people of Biafra and its Armed affiliate, the Eastern Security Network in Oroma and Umuewelum Anam in Anambra West Local Government Area of Anambra State. The troops raided the identified camps on Sunday 23 July 2023, in an effort to curb the illicit activities of the fighters in the communities. During the raid operation, the troops recovered one AK 47 Rifle, one AKMS Rifle, three Lexus SUVs and two Motorcycles. The troops also arrested eight brigands during the operation. In a separate operation, troops also raided IPOB camp at Mmiata Anam in Anambra South, where the gallant troops came in contact with the irredentist group and in the encounter, neutralized one IPOB fighter, while another was captured alive. The troops also recovered one AK 47 Rifle, one dane gun and police uniforms. The Nigerian Army wishes to enjoin all law abiding citizens and particularly the good and enterprising people of the South East to continue to support and cooperate with the troops and other security agencies in their effort to end the menace bedeviling the region. ONYEMA NWACHUKWU Brigadier General Director Army Public Relations 24 July 2023 |
Napoleon Bonaparte once said, "China is a Sleeping Giant. Let her sleep, for when she wakes, she will shake the world." President Bola Tinubu is poised to redefine the meaning and concept of modern leadership in Nigeria, the Giant of Africa, which had woken up from its slumber and is now poised to move the world. "Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it," so said Archimedes, "and I shall move the world." Nigeria needs no handouts but real partnerships. We have removed the albatrosses of fuel subsidies and multiple exchange rates from our necks; hence, we are seeking investments for mutually beneficial partnerships, not handouts. - Vice President Kashim Shettima [at the UN World Food Systems Financing Model meeting in Rome] |
In line with the new advisory of the National Economic Council (NEC) for states to design their own independent responses to neutralise the effects of recent removal of fuel subsidy, I have approved multibillion naira palliatives cutting across different sectors and demographies of Kwara State. On top of the palliatives is a cash support of N10,000 for every public sector worker in the state, which will begin this month (July) and last until a new minimum wage is introduced to enable workers cope with the economic shocks created by the subsidy removal. I have similarly approved the payment of new hazard and skipping allowances, and 100% CONMESS for consultants and medical doctors under our government's payroll. Nurses working for the state government will also enjoy a new regime of allowances. The essence is to check attrition rate in the health sector, and attract and retain medics and specialists to provide improved, qualitative healthcare services for the people of the state. In the next few days, modalities for occasional distribution of food to poor and most vulnerable households would be activated. This shall be nonpartisan, and would be coordinated by a government team to be supported by respected stakeholders who would get inputs from traditional rulers, religious bodies, market leaders, trade unionists, and community based organisations to generate the lists of beneficiaries and disburse accordingly. The Kwara State Social Investment Programme (KWASSIP) will also activate a N500m worth of conditional support for petty traders and MSMEs in the state. To boost farming outputs and food security in the state, our government will pay to receive fertilisers and grains from the Federal Government. Modalities for the handling of these will be made available later. I have also approved the extension of free bus rides for students of tertiary institutions in the state and directed the leadership of the civil service to continue a staggered work schedule — not exceeding three days a week — to reduce transportation expenses for workers. The whole idea of these interventions is to show empathy and deploy as much resources as the state can afford to support the people at this special time. Meanwhile, our government will be setting up a committee to interface with marketers on the need to curb extortionist tendencies as seen in arbitrary fixing of prices of food stuffs. This practice imposes hardship on everyone. I identify with His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his strong commitments to sustainable economic reforms and well-being of the Nigerian people. I believe that the current discomforts are just like the pains that precede the joyful birth of a child. - Gov. A. A. Rahman [Kwara State] |
