U.S National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has revealed its plans to start testing how drivers could use camera-based digital side-view monitors that is already replacing the traditional side mirrors in automobiles.

The cameras in the digital side-view monitors, which are designed to improve visibility and safety in all weather conditions, transmit the outside images onto display monitors inside the car. The monitors also reduces wind noise and it’s unaffected by rain.

The technology, which has been approved and currently in use in cars sold in Europe and Japan, still remains to be seen in United States.

In 2014, the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers—which includes representatives from Daimler AG, Volkswagen, BMW, FCA, Ford, Honda, GM, Nissan, Toyota, Tesla and others — solicited the NHTSA to use camera-based rear or side-vision systems on its cars. Uptill now, the petitions are still pending.

Toyota and Volkswagen last year began selling 2019 Lexus ES and Audi E-Tron electric SUV that were fitted with camera side mirrors in Japan and Europe respectively. The two automakers can only sell the same car versions with traditional side mirrors in the United States because the tech is currently not allowed there.

Honda will also have the camera-based technology standard on its Honda e when the all-electric car goes on sale in later this year or early next year.

South Africa on Friday seized an aircraft belonging to Tanzania's national carrier, Air Tanzania, over a farmer's $33-million compensation claim for land which Tanzania forcefully collected decades ago.

The Air Tanzania plane was seized at Johannesburg's OR Tambo International Airport after it landed on a scheduled flight from the Tanzanian economic capital Dar es Salaam.

Lawyer Roger Wakefield of Werksmans Attorneys, a specialist in cross-border disputes, said the seizure followed an order granted by the High Court in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

Here Is What Happened:
In the 1980s, according to Lawyer Roger Wakefield, the unnamed farmer was jailed for nine months while his massive privately-owned bean and seed farm, including equipment, 250 cars and 12 small planes, was seized by the Tanzanian government.

The government of Tanzania later agreed to compensate the Namibian-born Tanzanian farmer with $36m (₦13.1b) in the 1990s -- but the government only paid $20m (₦7.3b).

The outstanding balance of $16m (₦5.8b), which has accrued interest over the decades, now stands at $33m (₦11.9b).

The seized Airbus A220-300 aircraft, which was delivered brand new shortly before Christmas to Air Tanzania, is said to worth about $90m (₦32.6b), according to Wakefield.

The Lawyer said:

"If we have to auction it we certainly will" 

"It will remain under attachment until they pay the debt or put up security for the claim"

This is not the first time that an Air Tanzania plane will be seized. In 2017, an Air Tanzania Bombardier Q400 aircraft was seized by Canadian authorities over an unpaid debt of $38 million owed to a Canadian engineering company since 2010.

The Bombardier Q400 aircraft was released in March 2018 after Tanzania's prime minister and attorney general negotiated its release.

German automaker BMW has released an armour-plated version of its first SUV called the X5 Protection VR6. The new Tank-On-Wheels was designed to offer both private customers and diplomatic personnel protection against violent attacks and organised crime.

In addition to having a high-strength steel doors, side frames, roof and firewall, the new BMW X5 Protection VR6 is also fitted with 30mm thick glass for the doors windscreen and boot partition.

This VR6 level protection, according to the German automaker, can withstand bullets as large as the 7.62×39-mm round from an AK-47. BMW also rates this tank to survive a blast from 15 kilograms of TNT from 4 metres away.

The new BMW X5 Protection VR6 also has features like self-sealing fuel tank and a "reinforced sidewalls" runflat tyres that allows the driver to continue the journey even after a complete loss of tyre pressure. Optional after crash functions that ensure that the engine is not switched off after a collision are also available.

Other standard features of the BMW X5 Protection VR6 include an intercom and an attack alarm system. You can even pay more to equip it with ventilated and massaging seats, a reversing camera, LED front flashers in the radiator grille, rear flashers, roof-mounted light beacons, a roof antenna with additional receiver for digital radio as well as armour-plating for the vehicle batteries.

Powering this rig is BMW’s twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 petrol engine, that produces 530 horsepower and 750 Nm of torque. This power is fed to all four wheels via eight-speed automatic gearbox, which is enough to take this tank from standstill to 62mph in 5.9 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 130mph.

The truth is, you can barely distinguish the BMW X5 Protection VR6 tank from a conventional production vehicle when they stand side-by-side.

BMW hasn't announced its prices yet.

Emirates Airlines spokesperson revealed that the video was captured by a Cargospotter. The airline also said the Superjumbo A380 aircraft was taking off from Dusseldorf, Germany to Dubai.

“What you see here is that our A380 takes-off and then the airport follow me car goes on the runway to carry out a routine inspection"

"This is an airport ‘follow me’ car. One of its tasks is to frequently check runways / taxiways for debris to enable smooth operations. Airports have such vehicles, used for a variety of functions”

I know some of us in Nigeria are ready to embrace the electric car revolution despite the high cost of getting one and the unavailability of electric car charging stations across the country.

But what if you could just convert your petrol/diesel powered car into an electric car?

French startup Transition-One says it can do it for only $9,500 (₦3.4 million) — in fact, you can get a subsidy for a converted car that works out to around $5,600 if you are based in France.

Transition-One founder says:

"I'm selling to people who can't afford a brand new 20,000-euro electric car,"

"We're turning the best-selling models across Europe into electric cars."

The first prototype, a 2009 Renault Twingo that has an electric driving range of 180 kilometers, is fitted with electric motors and three packs of batteries on the front of the car and two on the site where the gas tank normally sits.

And complete conversion from a traditional fuel powered car to an electric vehicle takes less than a day. The original gearshift and gearbox are left untouched while the electrical socket is installed where the gas cap would originally have been.

The first models the startup want to explore includes Renault Twingo II, Fiat 500, Citroen C1, Peugeot 107, Toyota Aygo and Volkswagen Polo.

Police in Orange County, California, arrested a driver under the influence of drugs after he tried to fix two flat tyres on his broken-down Mercedes Benz with band-aids (plaster) and gauze.

According to a Facebook post by the Mission Viejo Police Services, an alert citizen called 911 after noticing something strange about a man sitting next to his broken-down car.

French Luxury Hypercar Maker Bugatti Says Buyer Of ₦6.7b La Voiture Noire Agreed To Buy It On The Spot After Seeing Only The Concept Sketches

The Bugatti La Voiture Noire, first unveiled at this year’s Geneva Motor Show in March and designed as a tribute to the Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic from the 1930s, is currently touring the World.

The one-off hypercar, which translates to "The Black Car", cost a whopping $12.5 million (and nearly $19 million when you include another $6.4 million in luxury taxes and fees). It is currently the world's most expensive new car.

While Bugatti still remains mum as to the identity of the $18.7 million hypercar’s owner, rumour has it that Bugatti aficionado, Cristiano Ronaldo, is the secret buyer of the World's most expensive new car.

The five times Ballon D'or winner, who boast a Bugatti Veyron and Chiron in his over dozen car collections, and currently pockets a whopping ₦333m or ($926,000) per week and ₦1.3b per month at Juventus, was forced to deny that he was the buyer.

Other names that have been floated as possible buyers includes boxer Floyd Mayweather, who once had 3 Bugattis at time, and former chairman of the Volkswagen Group, Dr. Ferdinand Piech.

Bugatti spokesperson confirmed approaching a single buyer with concept sketches of the vehicle, and the customer agreed to buy it on the spot. 

"As soon as a customer makes a public claim, then we can refer to that, but other than that we will honor a customer's anonymity and he will decide whether or not he wants to remain anonymous"

The only clue the French luxury Hypercar maker gave is that the lucky buyer is married, and that his wife suggested the Hypercar's six tailpipes. 

According to Bugatti, an average Bugatti buyer owns roughly 42 vehicles, five homes, three private jets, three helicopters and a yacht.

Still sporting an electric power-train, but expected to use Bugatti's infamous 1500 HP 8-liter, quad-turbo W-16 engine, the Batmobile-esque hypercar is still 24 to 30 months from completion.

This is the moment traders at the Computer Village in Ikeja forcefully opened the door of a red Toyota Matrix to save a suffocating two year baby after waiting for over 30 minutes for her mother to return.

This is shocking moment two New York City Fire Department Bureau of Emergency Medical Services (FDNY EMS) ambulances collided with one another at an intersection in the Bronx.

The Centodieci, which means 110 in Italian, is not only celebrating Bugatti's 110th anniversary, but it’s also paying homage to its iconic 90s supercar the EB110, which, was built for Ettore Bugatti’s 110th birthday in 1991. 

Unlike Bugatti's one-off $18.7 million La Voiture Noire, which was built for grand touring, the Centodieci was built for speed.

It features the infamous Bugatti's 8.0-liter W16 engine can move the Hypercar from zero to 62 mph in just 2.4 seconds and 124 mph in 6.1 seconds and to 186 mph in 13.1 seconds. Like the Chiron, Bugatti electronically limited the top speed of the car to 236 mph.

Bugatti plans to build just 10 Centodieci Hypercars, which will cost roughly $10 million after taxes. It is currently on display at the Monterey Car week alongside the one-off $18.7 million La Voiture Noire. The Voiture Noire or Black Car, which already has a buyer, won't be ready for at least 2½ years.

Last year's Monterey car week saw the  unveiling of the Bugatti Divo that was designed for corners instead of speed. Just 40 of the sold-out $6 million Hypercar will be made.

A 22-year-old Indian man, apparently unhappy he didn’t receive a new Jaguar from his parents, pushed his brand-new BMW birthday-gift into a nearby river.

Police said the man, identified only as Akash, allegedly drove the vehicle to the bank of the river and let it slide into the water.

Police said in a statement that :

“Akash was unhappy with his father for not buying him (a) Jaguar”

“He deliberately pushed (the) luxury vehicle BMW into the river.”

“When the youth was plunging the high-end BMW car into the river, he also made a video and put it on social media"

“We thought there may be somebody in the car but when those engaged in the rescue operation reached the vehicle they found none inside"

No charges have been field against Akash, who they claim has a mental deficiency and is undergoing treatment.

According to the local news, BMWs cost around 3.5m rupees (about the equivalent of $49,000 in India) while Jaguars go for 4-5m rupees ( about $60,000).

After successfully flying across the 22 mile English Channel on a jet-powered hoverboard a week ago, French inventor, Franky Zapata is now focusing his attention on his next project—a flying car that he says will debut by the end of the year.

He told France’s BFMTV that :

“I have my flying car to finish, it has to come out before the end of the year, so we'll come home, take a little vacation, and then, with the whole team, get back on track”

According to Zapata, the flying car’s chassis is already complete, with paint and bodywork scheduled for the coming days. He is also waiting for flight approval from French Civil Aviation Authority.

Zapata says his company, Rove, has already completed some flight tested the flying car at an unspecified racetrack in the south of France.

He also said a production version with 10 engines will be tested very soon — which will be able to carry more weight while going faster.

"The base of the flying car has already flown but in version four (jet) engines,”

“The version with ten engines will fly in the days to follow.”

The 40 year old inventor says the flying car will be able to cruise between 190 and 250 mph, and will have enough fuel onboard to cover up to 70 miles, or about the distance from Lagos to Ibadan.

His ₦90 million jet-powered flyboard, which is about the size of a tea tray, is powered by five small jet engines and fuelled by kerosene which is kept in the rider's backpack.
