RabbiDoracle:
In agriculture, Apples, tomatoes, grapes are still picked by hands by some companies in Europe despite using mechanised farming for the planting. No automation!

Why? Because they don't want blemishes or marks on the apple. Those ones with marks, they ship to Africa.

He doesn't understand that it is not all about low level jobs.

Some jobs are repetitive and humans breakdown doing that. Example was what he mentioned about Amazon Robots. These are huge repetitive jobs.

Elon making Tesla 75% automated knows that he can't put machines everywhere. Even those points where machines are doing the jobs still have humans doing the jobs of checking the machines for accuracy.
People value handmade jobs due to details.

Almost every part of Rolls-Royce are Handmade, except the paintwork.

Bring back to the US? At what cost? Cheap labour in EMs made the cost of things very cheap for the West.

Which westerner will be paid a minimum wage in US to make things locally?

When Trump was telling Tim Cook to bring back Apple manufacturing back to the US, I read that Tim Cook showed him a custom screw used in the phone and told Trump that very few US companies can manufacture that screw in the US. And the quantity they make will be few as well. But he said that in China, they can produce millions of these screws as you demand.

Then you talk about the cost of producing the custom screw. It is almost nothing in USD terms. And the EM cheap labour made it possible. Hence selling phones at cheaper cost to westerners.

The EMs have a comparative advantage than the developed markets due to cheap labour and on that basis, manufacturing common things cannot be shipped back to the West.
That Cost of Labor is usually determine by Unions and activists.

Remember when when Twitter sacked workers, most India workers took over Twitter.

Cost of manufacturing in US should be cheaper, but too much activist are making things difficult.

(the part in bold)

Don't let Ositadinma1 read this part o. Because he will start showing you the valuations of US companies and the amount of oil and gas US has wink grin grin

People need to be informed and not entertained.
US companies with factories in all over Asia.
TSMC, FOXCONN and co are all manufacturing products for the US.

I remembered Trump was trying to force these companies back to the US, but our Liberal Socialists were shouting global warming.

RabbiDoracle:
The world has seen the retaliation against Russia. And they are learning from it. And this is driving many more countries out when you weaponise a currency that is designated as a means of global exchange.

That was why Marco Rubio said that they can't sanction all countries. So this is basically making sanctions ineffective.

US can only sanction countries and prevent them from using US banks for transactional purposes. However this will create many more countries to trade amongst themselves and avoid dollar by using banks that will not trade in USD.

To make people willingly use dollar will mean to engage all aggrieved parties and listen to their demands. And that means that US has surrendered. Will they go through this route? We wait and see.

Even US allies have seen that their economies are crushed when they stop doing business with sanctioned countries. Look at the oil tanker companies and insurance companies that were made to join the sanctions, they got crushed because other 'ghost' players started lifting oil and eating the shares of the traditional lifting players. If a company doesn't do the business they were designed to do, they crash.

Last month a 645 year old German metal company collapsed. This was a company that saw :
-Ottoman empire
-Portuguese
-Spanish empire
-Dutch empire
-British Empire
-2 world wars and other regional wars
-All calamilites on earth

But collapsed in 2023 as a result of energy crisis, high commodity prices and abiding by German sanctions.

The next phase of the fight will be rich western elites contesting with the policy makers as their businesses get decimated.
Actually the current liberals(Democrats) are socialists mined they don't know how to manage the Economy.
Over the years liberalist movements (Environmental Activists, Anti-capitalism, unions and Labour groups) have slowed the US economy.
The US now relays on manufactured imports from Asia, Oil and Gas from Eastern Europe.

While browsing, I stumbled upon "The Ponzi Factor," a book whose author argues that, apart from dividend-paying stocks, the stock market operates like a Ponzi scheme. According to the author, when it comes to stocks that don't pay dividends, investors purchase them with the hope of selling them at a higher price to someone else, and the market requires a steady stream of new investors to sustain profits for existing investors. The book made some compelling points, and I recommend giving it a read as it's a concise read.

It sparked a different thought in me: If I had invested 15 million in UCAP in 2020, I would be receiving nearly 700k+ per month in dividends, which is similar to what Shell SPDC contract office workers in Port Harcourt earn each month. This translates to a passive 57% return on initial investment.
Someone actually said, Stock Exchange is legalized Ponzi

Please with regards to selling off shares and re-entering, do you receive your dividend when you re-purchase same stock or you have to go through the e-dividend process again? I recall First Registrars kept your record even if you sold off. Your account reads 0 shares. Saw that when I visited their office in the days when they still held FBNH portfolio. But I will like to ask about people's experience with selling off and buying again.

Do you get your dividend or you have to climb that e-dividend hill all over again.
Before selling off, I always keep a few units of my shares i.e 5 units.

Keeping a few units will keep your account active with the registrars, no need e-dividend.

But zero units make your account inactive after a while, you might need to do another e-dividend.

Sorry I made a mistake.
That part in bold should be ECOBANK and ACCESS (not STANBIC)

While I wouldn't align with STANBIC at the CMP, I think that impact (from impairment) on the bank will likely be from our domestic sovereign debt end and not that of Ghana.

Will effect a correction to that post.
Regards
Thanks.

Is it true that Zenit Might be having liquidity problems?

Sometime in Nov, 2022, I did some extrapolations on the OCI of banks (safe for Unity) stocked by the fair value differential (FVD) from eligible reclassified asset in their books, and its would-be impact on their NPM... and I remember telling some folks that;

1) ETI was a sell.
ETI had a fantastic run in on growth trajectory up until H1, 2022 following magt deliberate strategy to improve AsQ in Nigeria, but Q3 report printed a deviation in that line.
N12--13+ should've been the best exit price given how risk at the time, had a near equivalent peg to possible reward in view of the banks intrinsic value.
But I have to admit that selling now still defines playing safe.

For near similar reason (there are other reasons) STANBIC IBTC was also a sell.
Price was hovering above N40 at the time.

2) ACCESS, ZENITH, FCMB, FIDELITY, UBA and GTB were a buy depending on ones trade set-up.
As I said then; I like the 6 names, but prefer the last 3. (portfolio weighting in view)

With the last name (GTB), there were valid concerns that NIM would continue to deteriorate and rein in on AsQ following the decision to adopt a Holdco structure and given how the banks CoF was growing at a much faster pace than AsY prior that time.
But people were probably not seeing the other positives, particularly in Q3, 2022.
@ N17, MoS from IV was almost at par to price hence it made so much sense to jump in! (stated it here then)

And what about now?

I still think that ETI and STANBIC would likely be impacted more (YoY match in view)
Though I like the Nos in ACCESS Q3, 2022, I expect a moderate drop in AsY and AsQ in Q4 and it's YoY comparable period.

My expectations for ZENITH and GTB are obviously that of a mild one with a slightly higher degree of impact in the former (I expect a weaker NPM driven by added CoF/CoR as the Holdco plans set in)... this though, will only be in the short term.
With GTB though, my projection is that NPM and AsY will be impacted QoQ but not YoY. Notwithstanding, I expect GT AsQ to remain strong.

With the last 3 names (FCMB, FIDELITY and UBA) impact will be almost immaterial.
These 3 names have on average, been the most efficiently run in the last 5 quarters.
That said, I would gladly put my money in the last name (UBA) ahead of the 1st 2 in view of their CMPs (risk-reward margin in view)
...I like UBA.
For near similar reason, I also like STERLING BANK.

With them banks, it should be a selective play... of course, having a trade set-up that suits ones investment personality.

Selah
The impact will not be much on STANBIC due to the shareholding structure.

I detest online arguments but the failure was actually due to a bank run by their customers not the loss made on the bond sale.
It had to sell the bonds and investments for a loss in order to service withdrawals.

Another bank, Silvergate bank is in the process of being liquidated and shutdown.
Kindly explain what you mean by a bank run by their customers

During COVID, ZENITH went as low as 10.70, I bought around 10.75 with my breakeven as 11.
GT went as low as 16.70 or so......

Remember many bought higher before COVID occurred, it became an avenue for some with good cashflow to average down. Some took loans, some without fund did siddon look, etc.

Can't forget the efforts of @RabbiDoracle urging people to buy ZEE @ below 11 that time........with some convincing facts and all that.
How many remembered to come back and thank him? .....but to throw shades dey quick them.
Lots of stocks were at the lowest prices then.

If you have issues with anyone's post or prediction(s), the most honourable thing to do is to be constructive about it cos we view the market from different perspectives and someone like me don't have to necessarily agree with your own perspective.

I've had course to argue with Pa Emma here on some occasions despite that he's a sage and knows the market inside out.......and me, I be newbie.

As at yesterday, the market still closed +ve despite your "run", "take cover" msgs.
Some still didn't agree with your view, doesn't me we'll be throwing stones at you for that.

What happened to your below post on 8th Feb and other consequent ones?
