Family / Re: Is It Necessary To Spank Children? by Obamedo: 1:33pm On Apr 04, 2007
Interestingly in the UK, the anti spanking or smacking forum have taken things much further, they want all forms of spanking outlawed, thanks to their efforts you may get arrested by the police for any 'assault' on your child no matter how slight
They believe that most parents do not know where to draw the line

So don't fall and accidently hit your child with an outstretched hand in public, you might go to prison for child abuse tongue
Politics / Re: New Nigeria Police Force Uniforms by Obamedo: 1:28pm On Apr 04, 2007
I doubt if there are any security features on the uniform, all security features can be beaten anyway

I don't think it will make a difference though, Remember they carry ID cards but who has ever seen a police officers ID unless he is about to get a beating from another law enforcement officer or their best friends, the soldiers

Even carrying a gun and wearing the uniform doesnt make one relax on sighting an officer, he may be off duty and moonlighting as an armed robber!

@junegirl

Well said !

@all
Like i suspected most of us were spanked as children so we don't see anything wrong with it and plan to spank our kids if we haven't started already

There are some of us who were actually physically abused under the pretext that we were being disciplined (we had the crap beaten out of us) and we were the domestic punching bag on whom tensions and frustrations were let loose by our parents and elders
Hopefully this is a minority but spare a thought for those going through such an experience now, they are suffering in silence because society condones it

Who makes the rules on when, how hard and for what to spank a child for?

What i consider moderate may be considered too stern in the eyes of another

We should look at alternative methods of disciplining our children without resorting to violence

Well, the Bible says "spare the rod and spoil the child"

From personal experience, I don't think you need to spank a child in order to discipline them. If you spend more time interacting with a child you will find that you don't need to spank them to control them.
Children are not stupid just inexpericened and curious and so you have to explain to them why certain actions are not allowed.

But then some children are stubborn and  strong of character (like their parents usually) and it can be frustrating when trying to instill good values in a child.
It is however, not wise to lash out in anger or frustration as we are want to do. The child then believes that violence is appropriate when you are frustrated.
You are more likely to get results when you are calm, take time to explain the offence and what the punishment is going to be

Most Nigerian children were spanked and saw nothing wrong with spanking as we grew up and did the same to our children.
I think we are becoming more liberal hence the question raised about spanking children. It used to be a foregone conclusion that you will be spanked as a child and you will also spank you children

Discussions these days especially in western society suggest that it is cruel to hit a child and it is termed child abuse in what ever form
How many of us therefore think we are victims of child abuse? afterall we all "turned out ok"
Technology Market / Re: Cost Of 100GB Hard Drive For Laptop by Obamedo: 10:15am On Apr 04, 2007
@all

Can i remind you all that not all laptops or desktops use the same hard drive make sure it is compatible before you purchase

You are better off checking up the required specification first from the company website then going to look for the hard drive at a good price

so asking for the cost of a 100GB hard drive is like asking how much does a car cost
It depends on the make, model etc

Politics / Re: Why Are Nigerian Professionals in Diaspora Succeeding Everywhere But Nigeria? by Obamedo: 10:39am On Apr 03, 2007
Nigerians can not develop Nigeria because  corrupt Governors, selfish politicians, tribal warlords and Godfathers who are above the rule of law are driving them away

The fact that Nigerians succeed abroad shows how talented and versatile they are. They will succeed in almost any country if given the chance
Chances they do not get at home

Corruption is killing Nigeria
Nigerians thrive outside the country because there is a reward for their hardwork. They do not toil for years on end only to see corruption, unchecked inflation and a poorly managed economy ruin their retirement plans

A man who works in a post office and lives a simple life will have enough money over the years to buy himself a house, nice car and send his kids to university. It will be a struggle but it is possible

When there is no corruption you do not have to get rich quick, slow and steady wins the race
In Nigeria the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer

In makes no difference to the common man on the street whether OBJ, IBB, Yar'adua or his neighbours dog is in power because he will still be hungry

Our politicians are not stupid just greedy. They all start out with good intentions but almost all fall by the way side

In Nigeria you have to bribe for your human rights, in other 'corrupt' countries you bribe when you want to get around the law!

If we do not sort ourselves out, Samuel Doe will have got off lightly compared to the fate that some politicians will face
If society can not change itself peacefully change will come by force

Do not test the resolve of the Nigerian people. History has shown that time and time again the masses have risen up against the injustice of the oppressive, plundering ruling classes

Nigerians are biding their time and the masses are not stupid. We will soon have nothing to lose then Nigeria will burn.
All the palaces the rich are building for themselves will go up in flames.

We will have a conflagration of unstoppable public dissent spreading across the country like as wild fire and then nobody will be above jungle justice

Nigeria will be great.
