Health / Re: Unfortunate Deaths In Our Hospitals; A Nurse's Perspective by Obamedo: 10:26pm On Nov 07, 2015
omoarole:

Dear Nurse,
You have done a most unpardonable thing. That's the only fault I have for you. Do yu know what your sin is? YOU BROUGHT THIS TO NAIRALAND!!!!! Haba! This kind topic on Nairaland? I'm so disappointed. You have no idea what you've done.
You think people are are any reasonable or can judge something with reason? I am sure you didn't come here to look for sympathy for yourself or the Healthcare workers. I am sure your intention was to shed some light on the difficulties of working in a hospital. But you have just come to the wrong place.
A herbalist doesn't take counsel from market women forum. A clergyman has no preaching to do in a beer parlor. When you bring such an issue to a forum of I'll informed people with no inkling about the sorry state of health care delivery in Naija, this is what you get. Exactly this.
Meanwhile, for everyone that has commented on this matter, good or bad, authoritatively or iill-informed, witnesses or hearsay, your comments have been seen. Before you leave this forum, ask yourself....what have you contributed in a way to make sure Healthcare delivery improves in Nigeria?
The answer to Healthcare delivery is Participatory and responsible UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE. It's a huge and daunting task that may never see the light of day in Nigeria, because even the baseline infrastructure that will allow it to work are not available.
The strongest variable that correlates with greatest statistical significance with the standard of living in any nation is availability of Universal Healthcare coverage. Not GDP. Not population. Not democracy. Not even freedom of speech or any of the other fundamental things. Definitely not how religious the country is.
So, dear OP.....kindly let's take this conversation elsewhere....there is a better way to make Nigeria a better place than discussing such an issue here where the only responses you read are OVERWHELMINGLY negative.

Thank you for your comments, what an intelligent post!

I have been reading through several ignorant posts and shaking my head, so the poor nurse should use her salary to save your life because you, Mr Stranger, your life is more precious than the life of her child at home?
You are just number 101 of 1000 emergencies she will see that month, should she pay for all of them? dying or not just because life is precious?
Did you not know your life was precious when you were walking or driving around without emergency funds in case you had an accident?

Everyone feigns poverty in nigeria, nobody want to pay for anything, So tell me because it is human life it should be free? You should have access to free immediate emergency care and the poor nurse has to provide it? Is the Nurse your father? your Governor? your benefactor?

Does the Nurse live in a free house, get free food, free rides to work? Does the nurse demand free everything because she has the very important life of saving jobs?

Please get things into perspective. If you live in Nigeria and you don't make provision for healthcare emergencies you deserve what you get! Mediocre care or no care at all.

Tell the market woman to give you free garri to save your life, afterall hunger can lead to death

I don't support violence but if their oil is good enough to keep the country fed then with a willing sacrifice from the Niger deltans and a single blow up of an oil rig, buhari and his gang up team 'll be called back to a round table of negotiations with MEND. Only a fool will call Asari a toothless bulldog. BH started this way with no good reason @ all but these guys got every reason to FIGHT. Nigeria is becoming a pawn in Russia and US's game. The big picture is far off.

Not as simple as that.
Who are these militants fighting for apart from themselves.
With all the money being poured into the Niger delta albeit private pockets, what development has been brought to the area?
The rich are getting rich and the poor are getting poorer.

What has Russia and the USA really got to do with militancy in the Niger delta? The US have discovered new oil fields which their exploiting and reducing dependence on imports while Russia makes more money from gas supplies to Europe.
So nigeria is less of a priority.

Wow! Your calculations and economics are flawed my friend. GDP is not the same national income, Nigeria certainly does not make $500 billion a year not to talk of income from oil revenue.

Budgetary calculations are based on estimated income from mainly oil revenue receipts and this is a different kettle of fish to GDP which is a sum total of a nation's economic output to put it in laymans terms.. i'm not an economist

The attached document will give you an idea of what i am saying, we certainly don't earn $500 billion a year

I concur.
Flawed logic.
GDP is a measure of the economic might of the nation as a whole.
The oil industry contributes to GDP but it's like comparing apples and oranges to compare oil revenue to gross domestic product.

All of you are condoning the random lynching of a so called 'suspect' whether he is boko haram or not is irrelevant to you? It shows a deep ignorance

So tell me what makes you better than dogs that hunt in packs and show no mercy to their prey?
I thought humans were supposed to be of a higher intelligence than animals?

Checkpoint tactics and protocols dictate an isolation and interrogation area should be set up where before any individual approaches, if he refuses to be searched, he is denied entry from a safe distance and disabled if necessary using appropriate escalation of force rather than lynching him.
If it was me and they asked to stop and open my bag for searching in a language i don't understand should i therefore be lynched because i did not comply or understand?

To all who lynch first and ask questions later, think.. if he did indeed have a bomb do you think it was safe to lynch him?

Politics / Re: Gov. Oshiomole Orders Investigation Into Death Of Hotel Staff In Police Custody by Obamedo: 3:38pm On Mar 19, 2015
The Nigerian police are a reflection of society, we accept instant 'jungle' justice because its the norm.

The thought he may be innocent doesn't cross anyone's mind any more than it crosses the minds of those who put tyres on people's neck on the streets and set them alight.

Just remember, one day it may be you or your relative who happens to be in wrong place at the wrong time. Nigerians need to stop this mob mentality that has taken us back several 100 years and act civilised and educated (tall order I guess) this is another example of indiscipline and the culture of corruption and impunity that has soaked through the entire fabric of our society. We are all guilty and no one is blameless.

Say no to extrajudicial killings and jungle justice!

The Nigerian police should be more accountable, Mr IG of Police, you are institutionally responsible for this injustice.

I can see Nigerian soldiers think the 'Geneva convention' is an alcoholic concoction sold by the local herbalists.

Nigerian army soldiers are modern day barbarians I am afraid to say. We obviously need more professionalism and leadership, not area boys with weapons in uniform aka westside boys.
From the comments above I can see Nigerian soldiers are a reflection of the mentality of our society. Area boy and jungle justice mentality.

Ok, those against Male circumcision do something about it and those against Female circumcision do something about it.

Blowing hot air on NL won't make a difference apart from perhaps raising awareness.

How much right does a child have to decide his own or Her own destiny?

Children are
Circumcised at birth/childhood
Denied the breast and fed formula
Dragged to the church, mosque or wherever the family shrine may be

So what do we do?

Everyone has to be involved in what should and shouldn't happen to their children but to what degree?

Who decides, The state or the parent?

There is no easy solution so we should start with those practice that have clear benefits ie breast feeding and debate those which are less obvious or plainly harmful

I wonder what would be the argument if all circumcision is carried out in the best institutions by highly trained staff.

I am in no way supporting circumcision I am just wondering

Health / Re: My Funny Experience In A Nigerian Hospital (must Read) by Obamedo: 12:43am On Dec 03, 2014
I agree!

All Nigerian doctors are quacks, yes I said so.

They are not fit for purpose and are as useless as a pilot without an aeroplane when you need to travel. So the pilot who can't get you from A to B when you need to is also a quack. So also are the politicians who can't sort out Nigeria and her problems overnight. Guess what, we are all quacks. All Nigerians are officially quacks, doctors, lawyers, engineers etc. why? because they never do a good job. The legal system is rubbish, there is no constant electricity etc

But, tell me, do you expect a driver to get you from A to B safely with a rusty old jalopy with bald tyres, a smoking rattling engine and a sticky gearbox? Do you expect constant electricity when the engineer doesn't have a quality transformer to install in your neighbourhood?

If not, why do you expect a Nigerian doctor to treat you correctly with no reliable equipment or diagnostics.
He's a doctor not a magician. Why shouldn't he ask you questions? are you an animal or a child who can't speak? Or is he a vet?

I guess he's supposed to look at you and diagnose by the frown on your face or the way you walked in. Next time you walk into a restaurant and they ask you what you want to eat, roll your eyes and ask them why they can't figure it out for themselves after all they specialise in feeding hungry people.

The tired and overworked poor fellow has to rely on clinical acumen and the knowledge that common things occur commonly in order to give you the best treatment (sorry quack treatment) he has to offer. In Nigeria all fevers are malaria till proven otherwise and yes HIV is common. So most times he/she is right. If you want a fancy diagnosis they can always oblige if it makes you feel better and you have the money to pay for it. However anyone can diagnose ignorance so save your money.

By the way, If you don't like Nigerian doctors please go to India or South Africa or better still treat yourself at home including your gun shot wound, and don't forget to bring your own scalpel, anaesthetics, quack medicine and of course a sweet looking smiling nurse ready to rub your back and wipe your arse because you pay her a million naira a month.

No Sir, the NMA is not a regulatory body. Regulation is the function of the Nigerian medical and dental council.

Have you been to their office before? Last time I went it was a delapidated and incompleted building on Lagos Island just to give an idea of the scale of the problem.

They sorely need funding to do their job properly. All they do is collect fees from Nigerian doctors for registration. Have you ever heard of any doctor in Nigeria being sued for negligence?

They do not even issue a certificate of registration to show a doctors registration is current.
What a shambles!

Leadership has to start from the top, blame the 'elected' government and those whose job it was before them. They are killing more people in Nigeria than all the quack doctors out there.
Health / Re: Aljazeera Undercover Investigation Exposes Fake Doctors In Nigeria (video) by Obamedo: 10:47pm On Nov 27, 2014
Quack doctors are a product of society, they only thrive when the government and healthcare monitoring processes are weak.

Quack doctors in the UK? Please tell me where they are, they are quickly caught and shut down so please don't compare Nigeria with thousands of quacks to the UK with one or two who set up shop from time to time and are quickly caught and shut down.

On another point, I feel people patronise them knowing they are not legitimate because they are cheap and affordable to them.
They are also willing to carry out illegal procedures such as terminations of pregnancy, so the poor victims pay up, put up and shut up hoping they come out alive.

If all you were ill and your life savings amounted to a meagre 5k and absolutely nothing else wouldn't you take your chances with the local quack and pray for the best?
If healthcare services were 'free' would you not go to the nearest free facility and seek attention?

So quacks are simply a product of poverty, poor governance and a corrupt society. This is just the tip of the iceberg.

Religion / Re: Is It Wrong For Christians To End A Marriage Due To Impotency Of A Partner by Obamedo: 11:33am On Oct 05, 2014
A a marriage must be a marriage in order for you to consider a divorce on any grounds
A marriage entered into with one party withholding vital information such as the ability to have children is a marriage based on falsehood and isngrounds for annulment rather than divorce ie the marriage was never valid

Scenario 1. A woman gets married to a man knowing fully well she has a congenital problem such as a chromosomal abnormality which prevents her from conceiving without informing the man. She has will fully withheld vital information from the man with severe implications and he was this deceived into marriage. According to law the marriage is not valid because there was no dull disclosure even if it has been consummated. It is up to the man to decide if he wants an annulment or not.

A similar scenario is a man who marries a sex change woman who was formerly a man with no disclosure.

Scenario 2. A couple have been married for several years and the man develops impotency over time due to health issues. I've diabetes and smoking. There are no grounds for divorce biblically. The marriage can also not be annulled as it has been consummated. Infertility is not grounds for divorce or even annulment if there is no prior knowledge.

There is a difference between infertility and impotency.
All views are my own and given without prejudice.

Health / Re: 'Majority Of 15,000 Doctors Trained By UCH Work Abroad' by Obamedo: 7:29am On Feb 01, 2012
Good morning,
So many comments by all the 'honorary doctors' in the house
Doctors are human and will obey the laws of a market economy, It's survival of the fittest

The starting salary for a doctor in the UK isn't 35k, it's about 25k but that's besides the
Point. The cost of living is much higher in the UK regarding things like transport, housing etc so don't expect your salary to afford you a life of luxury

Your NYSC in Nigeria is payback as far as I'm concerned, if you want more then you can ask the government to change the rules. While you are at it, can you ask them to improve the quality of the educational system, the salaries of Drs etc then more doctors will stay. Doctors in Nigeria are not asking for pop star wages but they want a salary commensurate with what they do, better living conditions and a good life work balance, but then don't we all. You fight your corner and we will fight ours.

If you have got mouths to feed and a family in need your altruistic instincts go out the window, you will seek greener pastures too.

I can't think of any medical school that has more than 50% of its graduates working in Nigeria.
Nigerian doctors abroad do contribute to Nigeria, though not all, some are highly disillushioned with their experiences in nigeria and have disowned nigeria, i hope temporarily.
Do you think it's only Yahoo boys sending money home? Do you know how much money is remitted home every month by Nigerians abroad? So we do contribute to the economy in different ways

Nigerian doctors generally leave to seek better training and stay as they are swayed by the attractive salaries on offer. You're more likely to be given a job on merit than which compound you grew up in and which state you're from.
There are so many issues here but lets not forget doctors are human too, Why don't you donate half your salary to charity as a start?

Most Nigerian doctors were top of their class so they are smart, if they were smart in their young, don't expect them to be silly in later life. If they see an opportunity they will take it just like you. Nigerian doctors are not asking for charity, they take pride in their profession and they want to do it properly, a quote of mine " I'm a doctor not a hospital" I can give you advice treat you etc but I need to right equipment, the government needs to invest in healthcare. Medical care is not cheap
To set up a simple diagnostic suite in Nigeria I require in my particular speciality will cost me over £300,000.
That's not adding the cost of installation, maintenance etc it's actually cheaper to set up the same unit in Zambia as I don't have to pay extortion fees to any government official. They are happy to have me and it's not about the money it's about the service and commitment. Otherwise I'd buy myself a nice car and go on fancy holidays so please don't question the motives of Nigeria doctors we know where we are from and we think of Nigeria everyday

And before you ask
yes I graduated in nigeria
Yes I work abroad
Yes I earn a comfortable salary, I'm not ashamed of that
Yes I do come home and contribute to the system, twice a year
Yes I am appalled at the state of healthcare in Nigeria but one man cannot build a nation

So I am more than qualified to join the debate and answer your questions too

Have a nice day, I will it's my first half day off this year

Who is more culpable in Nigerian corruption?

1. The legislators who bring in laws to enable them get away with it and refuse to legislate effectively as the case may be?

2. The law enforcement agencies for failing to enforce the rule of law and selling their souls to the highest bidder?

3. The judiciary for refusing or be morally upright and uphold the law, especially in political matters?
