PoliticsRe: Imagine Fuel At N75 Per Litre by Obamedo: 10:13pm On May 27, 2007
The price of fuel in Nigeria has been politicised
Do we hassle the Government when the price of garri goes up

Market forces should determine the price of fuel like everywhere else

The only reason why we make so much fuss in Nigeria is because cheap fuel is seen as our share of the national cake while politicians loot the treasury
We should tackle corruption first, it is destroying our country

If the economic situation in Nigeria was better, we would not mind paying more for fuel if we had the opportunity to earn the decent salary to pay for it

Nigeria must change!
InvestmentRe: Stock Market Tips For Nigerians by Obamedo: 10:17am On May 27, 2007
@Tmoni
I think uboy is talking about trading futures and options on shares listed on the NSE
To the best of my knowledge we do not have such a platform in Nigeria

@those who don't know
Futures or options trading is the practice of buying and selling the right to buy shares or commodities (usually) at a given rate in the future, hence the name futures
Its a way of speculating on the market, you can make (and also,lose) a lot of money without putting down the initial capital outlay to invest

ie I can buy the right to purchase 10,000 units of FBN stock at N42 for 3 months
Lets say i buy the option at 10 kobo per share ie 10,000 units @N0.10 = N1000
If the price rises to N55 I can now sell the options to someone for lets say N1 per share
making me a profit of N1 x 10,000= N10,000

The person who buys the options can then go on to buy 10,000 of FBN at N42 even though the prevailing price is N55
You can work out the rest of the maths

On the otherhand if the price falls to N35, i will not want to exercise my option because i will lose money if i buy at N42 so my N1000 is as good as gone

Note that to buy 10,000 units of FBN myself at N42 will cost me N420,000 and if i sell at N55 i will make a profit of N550,000 - N420,000= N130,000

So if you don't have N420,000 but you are willing to gamble N1000 you can make a profit

Hope this helps

@all

From the replies given on this thread i can see there are some very naive people on this thread
I suspect some of the replies are also from yahoo yahoo boys trying to protect their livelihood by encouraging you

Most if not all Buyers from Nigeria on ebay are fraudsters Period!

Do not send any goods to Nigeria

Even if they have sent you a postal order (fake) or any other cash instrument (fake credit card) do not release the goods till the hard cash is in your possession (fat chance)
If you withdraw cash that is later reversed from your paypal account you will become liable for the charges
Remember paypal is owned by eBAy

paypal payments can be reversed so do not be fooled into thinking that once the payment has been received the money is good as yours its not! your goods are as good as gone if you release them

eBay is of no use in this ,matter they take forever and send you rubbish computer generated replies thats can't help you
Don't even bother trying to call ebay also a waste of time

Bottomline Do not deal with any Nigerians on eBay or you will regret it!
TravelRe: Investment Goldmine In Tourism by Obamedo: 9:10am On May 22, 2007
@ogbotobo
well said
the general attitude of Nigerians has to change too

Almost everywhere you go you get the feeling people are trying to rip you off, Nigerians are not as welcoming to tourists as we used to be

The Nigerian mentality of we have petrodollars we don't need your tourism dollars doesn't help
Are we seeing the oil money NO!

At least if we work on the tourism industry, opportunities are created everywhere tourists go, shopping malls, arts and crafts centres, historic sites of interest, hotels, holiday resorts, game reserves etc

All these plus more are more useful  in creating jobs locally rather than oil revenue which only the politicians and their cronies enjoy

Long live Nigeria!

If you keep hold of your shares you will be able to take advantage of a rights offer and buy more shares at a discount to the offer price given to new investors when the offer goes public

If indeed you must sell then keep some so you can still take advantage of a rights offer

The Presidential candidate of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), yesterday in Abuja asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Federal Government to conduct a fresh presidential polls.

There must be another alternative! can't imagine the likes of Igbinedion extending their terms in office to continue looting the coffers

May be an interim government to take over while fresh elections take place but please kick the incumbents out!

InvestmentRe: In Which Stock Should I Invest 50,000 Naira? by Obamedo: 10:35am On Apr 24, 2007
If you want to invest in stocks, invest in stocks! It pays to stick to your original investment idea

Don't be lured by all these secretive investments claiming a fantastic return on your investment in a short time period.
A fool and his money are soon parted

They might pay for now but they are all high risk. Secure your N50K in stocks first and you can gamble whatever else you can afford to lose on whatever 'scam' there is out there that catches your fancy but dont be surprised if you lose your money

Diversify your investments but start with the principle of safe investments first and high risk later

Nairaland is fast becoming a haven for scammers and con artists

Did you make phottocopies?
If you did you need to get in contact with CSCS immediately with the photocopies so they can halt any impending sales etc and put the certificates on a watch list in case they show up

It might mean going to Nigeria and doing the legwork yourself to ensure a result

TravelRe: How To Stop My Brother From Trying To Travel To Malaysia? by Obamedo: 3:32am On Apr 23, 2007
@4play
Life is definitely better in the UK than Malaysia
It depends on your perspective, Malaysia is a developing economy and economic growth is very rapid. Corruption is minimal and the system works
Nigeria and Malaysia were at par with roughly the same GDP in 1969, now were are still $400 or so and Malaysia is now $3-4000 dollars.
They are not richer than Nigeria just more sensible less greedy and less corrupt (there is still corruption)

A Malaysian in the UK will earn more in the UK doing the same job than in Malaysia, thats why your Malaysian medical student friend said life is better in the UK

The cost of living is much lower in Malaysia than Nigeria and the standard of living is much better
However in the UK the cost of living is much higher ie you pay more for everything, housing, electricity & transport etc

Interesting point: Malaysia is the worlds largest producer of oil palm, the original seeds for the oil palm plantations were sourced from NIFOR (Nigerian Institute for oil palm research) in the 1970s

Thanks for your reply

The toys will be made in China like most toys in the world anyway. Its getting the franchise of license to sell copyrighted toys that is the first hurdle.
You cant make superman or spiderman toys yourself and sell unless you want to break the law anyway
It might also call for an own brand range of toys designed and sourced directly from Asia
If you cant beat them join them

Will keep you all posted

PoliticsTerror In The North And South, Is Nigeria Falling Apart? by Obamedo(op): 8:29am On Apr 19, 2007
http://www.businessdayonline.com/?c=44&a=12732

Is Nigeria falling apart?
There have now been several terror attacks in Northern Nigeria recently
This is a worrying trend
We already have the unrest in the Niger Delta and now we have the north
Their aims may be different but it is a worrying development as the effects will be the same

Nigeria is in a very delicate situation right now compounded by our political leaders

Some urgent must be done before we implode as a Nation

The first step is to get rid of the current administration, all their cronies and the medley of corrupt politicians and so called Godfathers who have been 'running' our country into the ground since the first republic

The massive rigging that has just taken place in gubernatorial elections must not be allowed to repeat itself ion the presidential elections

PoliticsRe: Nigeria's Image Was Badly Damaged On Oprah Today! by Obamedo: 1:33am On Apr 15, 2007
@egoldman

There is a difference between 'spam' and 'scam' emails

Spam is simply junk mail selling rubbish like viagra, penis enlargements, you name it. They originate from countries with the biggest web servers, web hosting companies and internet traffic hence your league tables showing the US etc
If i want to send spam i will use a company in the US to process my emails even though i am in the UK because it is cheaper

Scam emails are sent by fraudsters and are usually disguised to appear to come from another country.
I can be in Nigeria and send an email which appears to come from canada
Would you reply my scam email if i said i was in Nigeria or if i said i was in Switzerland?

Eastern europe and Asia is the source of most phishing emails ( a type of scam email that targets bank details) and 419 fraudsters are the source of 419 emails whereever they are sent from, Nigerians are everywhere
PoliticsRe: Nigeria's Image Was Badly Damaged On Oprah Today! by Obamedo: 1:28am On Apr 15, 2007
@walelead

What part of town are you living in??
You have a very skewed idea of  British society, British mentality and British values

I am yet to come across any football thug who is given a pat on the back and told by the judge its just passion for the game. I am also yet to come across a drunkard called a regular. In England a regular actually means someone who attends a particular pub regularly not someone who gets drunk regularly
Brits do admit to wrong doing, they recognise the ills of society and do something about it thats why the laws are always changing, thats why their are laws against racism, discrimination etc Why do you think slavery was abolished?

The problem with  British society now is they overcompensate when trying to correct a wrong in society all in the name of being PC (politically correct) the laws then become silly and don't make sense anymore

We as Nigerians whether Ibo Hausa or Yoruba should recognise there is a problem and do something about it not condone it because we are hiding the truth
There is a difference between being fiercely patriotic and defensive of your country Nigeria and hiding your head in the sand and pretending nothing is wrong
Should you wait till the house has burnt down before you shout fire?

The real cause of 419 and now militancy in Nigeria is lack of opportunities for a highly educated, dynamic and intelligent youth who have no prospects
If the Government creats jobs and an environment where there is reward for hard work in Nigeria few people will turn to 419 because they can do better in a better environment
The devil works in idle minds!

InvestmentRe: Stock Market Tips For Nigerians by Obamedo: 10:02am On Apr 14, 2007
@cheexy

Many Nigerian companies are not as transparent and forthcoming with information as they should be compared to companies in other countries. We are a nascent economy and still learning the rules of the game hence it is difficult for investors to gather relevant information to make decisions.
Very few companies have this information freely available too, you have to look for it from financial magazines, newspapers, company bulletins, annual reports etc
Thats why forums like this exist

We are lucky that the Nigerian stockmarket has bullish tendencies as you would expect from a developing economy so most stocks you invest in you tend to make a good return even if you havent really done your homework you are more likely to make a profit if you invest 8 times out of 10. Just don't be greedy and have patience with your investments
Technology MarketRe: Fund Your Skype Account by Obamedo: 9:55am On Apr 14, 2007
Skype is VOIP software which you can install on your PC to make phone calls
VOIP = Voice over internet protocol.

If you have access to the internet you can download the software and make telephone calls through the internet to anyone in  the world who has also got skype installed on their PC. These calls are free and the service is simply called skype

There is also another skype services called skype out which means that if you credit your skype account you can make calls through your PC to landline numbers mobile phones etc anywhere in the world
It is much cheaper thanusing a conventional telephone in most countries
The only limitation is that you need to be connected to the internet through a PC to make phone calls

Some 3G networks  like 3 in the UK offer skype on the internet surfing package that comes with the phone like the nokia N73
This enables you to make and receive skype calls on your mobile

If he is a large supplier he may be able to give you a  good discount so i would not be too stressed about the price differential

I am sure the prices quoted above are for all in one standalone systems which are much more powerful
Is that right Naijafresh?

If he is a professional he should be able to tell you what kind of system you will require for your particular needs IE number of Fridges TVs ACs etc
He has mentioned a hybrid system which means you will still rely on PHCN

Does he also install and maintain?
Can he show you similar projects he has successfully completed?

BusinessRe: Where's The Best Location To Set Up A Boutique In Lagos? by Obamedo: 9:45am On Apr 11, 2007
Hmm, Hope she has a business plan

Depends on a lot of things such as

1.  how much money she has toward rent, remember location! location! location!

2. What she wants to sell in the boutique and who her intended customers are high brow areas like VI, Lekki, Ikoyi, Ikeja etc will have lots of boutiques already doing what she wants to do

3. whether she want competition in the area or does she want to be a trend setter, if she goes to a new area she will have to advertise her presence and rely on word of mouth. No point trying to sell designer stuff to people in Ajegunle, so it all boils down to location! location! location! again

She need to get down on the ground and look around all the areas of Lagos she is interested in herself
Cant be an arm chair business woman you know we don't know what vision she has for her business so it is hard to advise

Good luck to her
BusinessRe: Why Is Solar Power Not Commonly Used In Nigeria? by Obamedo: 9:25am On Apr 11, 2007
nazzyon:
Having the money to buy a solar panel does not attach to maintenance. The bill for maintenance is killing once any of the plates is out you can't be fix it. You will have to replace it.
If you buy quality maintenance becomes less of an issue as pointed out earlier in this thread

If you buy a dud car expect it to break down sooner rather than later
"You get what you pay for"

The limiting factor with solar power is the initial cost

If you look at the cost of fuel and buying a generator in Nigeria over a 25 year period (average  lifetime guarantee of solar panels) the benefits of Solar power far outweight the benefits of a diesel generator

This is because the supply of electricity through the grid is virtually non existent in Nigeria as opposed to other countries where there is a constant supply.
People  in these countries therefore fit solar panels to reduce their energy bills not to supply electricity not provided by the government
