Nigeria railway workers express fear of job loss with GE concession January 29, 2017Agency Report Nigeria rail workers support concessions The Nigeria Union of Railway Workers has expressed fear that the planned concession of the railway system by the Federal Government could lead to loss of jobs of no fewer than 15,000 of its members. Saidu Garba, the President-General of the union, told the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday in Lagos that the concession “will also retard the economy instead of growth’’. He, therefore, advised the Federal Government to reverse the planned concession so as not to worsen the nation’s economy. According to him, privatisation policy has not brought any positive change to the economy from its inception. “It is not good for government to continue falling into the same mistakes all the time. “Some privatised government companies, bought by individuals, are not making progress up till date. “NEPA and NITEL are good examples of failure of the privatisation policy in the country. “Some of the privatised company still collect bailout funds from the government, which should not be so,” he said. The union leader said that the proposed concession, if implemented, would affect over 15,000 work force of the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC). “We are appealing to the government to reverse its plan on the concession,” Mr. Garba said. NAN, however, reports that the fear of job loss, if the railway is concessioned, was allayed by the Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, in October 2016 in Abuja. Mr. Amaechi said at an International Transportation Conference in Abuja, where the idea of concessioning the railway was announced, that an American company, General Electric (GE) would take over the management of NRC under a concession plan. According to him, the entrance of General Electric into the management of the NRC was to harness the full potential of rail transportation infrastructure. The concession arrangement, billed to commence in the first quarter of 2017, Amaechi said, will also create additional new jobs. He said that the Federal Government had full knowledge of the current hardship in the country but was determined to curb corruption at all levels while turning the economy around. (NAN) |

Nigeria Peace Corps Bill ready for assent, as NASS adopts consolidated versionBy Yemi Itodo on January 19, 2017@dailypostngr National-Assembly-e1443893761531 The process of establishing the Nigerian Peace Corps has received another boost on Thursday when the both chambers of the National Assembly consolidated the Nigerian Peace Corps Bill. It could be recalled that the Bill was passed into law by both chambers in the year 2016. For the sake of harmonizing it for presidential assent, the National Assembly, therefore, set up a conference committee of both chambers to fine-tune the Bill. While laying the report on the Consolidated Bill at the House of Representatives, the Chairman of Committee on Interior, Hon. Jagaba Adams Jagaba said the joint ,”committee met in conference on Thursday, 8, 2016 and harmonised the two versions of the Bill.” Hon. Jagaba said the Bill seeks to, among other things, “empower, develop and provide alternative empowerment for the youths, to facilitate Peace, Community Services and nation-building”. The House, therefore, adopted the report of the conference committee and the Consolidated Bill laid before the clerk. In a related development, the Senate also received and laid the report of the conference committee on the Consolidated Bill. In a motion moved by Senator Ibrahim Gobir (Sokoto East) and seconded by Senator Ben Bruce (Bayelsa East), the Senate President asked that the report be laid before the clerk of The Senate. With the Consolidated version of the Bill, all is now set for the assent of the President. In the harmonized version of the Bill which is now refereed to as ‘Nigerian Peace Corps Bill’, the Officers of the establishment shall be known as Nigerian Peace Corps with the National Commandant as the head. The Bill also stipulates that intending officers must obtain enrollment form from their respective commands and undergo compulsory 4 weeks orientation exercise |

Friday, January 6, 2017 Abuja 26 Menu Pregnant women beg for paramilitary jobs in Ogun January 6, 2017Dimeji Kayode-Adedeji A drama occurred at the venue of the screening of applicants for the cadet cadre of the Peace Corps of Nigeria, PCN, in Ogun State on Thursday when some pregnant women begged the officials of the corps to consider them for the job due to the unemployment situation in the country. The women were among thousands of applicants who attended the exercise held in Asero Housing Estate of Abeokuta, the state capital. The screening was conducted in anticipation of the presidential assent to the bill establishing the corps, which was passed recently by the National Assembly. The women and the youth arrived the venue of the exercise as early as 7 a.m. to pick the registration forms for the job. They were subsequently subjected to medical test, fitness, mental alertness, educational standard, among others. The women begged the PCN officials for the job after they were screened out on medical ground. The screening, conducted by officers of the corps led by the Commandant of the Corps, Olalekan Yusuff, precedes the one-month intensive training of the cadets, and which would qualify the successful ones to be officers. Addressing the applicants, Mr. Yusuff said the corps was a dignify profession and would not recruit anybody with criminal records. He also admonished those who were screened out based on health reasons and pregnancy not to see the corps as being discriminatory but to commend it for being safety conscious. He noted that the one-month intensive training contained rigorous exercise and those who were not medically fit may not be able to cope. “We are peace loving body and we shall continue to promote and maintain peace. “For those of you that we screened out based on health conditions and pregnancy, I want you to understand that we value your life more than anything else and we cannot allow you to partake in the training,’’ he said. Expressing her appreciation to the leadership of the corps, a pregnant lady, who pleaded anonymity, thanked the leadership of the corps in the state for telling them about the strenuous nature of the exercise. She noted that she had been looking onto the Lord for the pregnancy for close to five years and could not afford to lose it. She commended the peaceful conduct of the officers for educating them ahead of the one-month intensive training and advised those who had poor health condition to withdraw. She, however, called on the federal and state governments to do more in terms of job creation for the youth in the country in order to reduce their suffering. “I thank the Peace Corps Oga for telling us that we that are pregnant cannot go, I have been looking for pregnancy for five years and now that I have it, I cannot risk it,” she said. “And I want to beg federal and state government to create job for the unemployed youth s in Nigeria.” |
