Shun political violence, Melaye urges youths

ON DECEMBER 22, 20161:24 PMIN NEWSCOMMENTS

Sen. Dino Melaye (APC-Kogi West) on Thursday advised youths not to allow themselves to be used by desperate politicians to fulfil their selfish ambitions.

Melaye said this at the end of the year Gala night and award ceremony of the Peace Corps of Nigeria (PCN) in Abuja.

“The youths in the country are change agents because in an unjust society, silence is a crime. The youths should develop their positive dreams.

“The youths should wake up and act fast, as youths we must not sleep and we should not be divided by religion, culture, tradition, and it is time to say bye to terrorism,’’ he said.

However, Melaye said the PCN would not only be relevant in security of Nigerians but instrument to the revolution of Nigerian youths.

He enjoined the youths to always promote the change mantra of the present administration for a better future.

A Human Right Activist, Mr Femi Falana, called for the endorsement of the Peace Corps Bill in order to be an act of parliament.

He said the PCN would be a pillar of social change and growth, advising the organisation to educate and re-orientate youths when passed into law.

“This organisation should go out and mobilise our youths as many of them were suffering from ignorance.

“The youths are been used to stage demonstrations in support of corruption, am challenging this organisation to change some of the wrong mind set of youths,’’ Falana said.

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr Solomon Dalung, said the PCN was a significant milestone in the history of youth development in Nigeria.

He said the empowerment of the youths would reduce some of the challenges of young persons in the country.

Dalung blamed the crisis in the National Youth Council on interference by politicians and others not within the age bracket of youths but using the group for their selfish motives.

He urged the youths to change their mind set and disengage from indiscipline and negative values.

The Commandant PCN, Mr Dickson Akoh, said the organisation was solution to the malaise of unemployment bedevilling the Nigerian youths and its attendance to social consequences on the nation.

“It will empower, develop and provide alternative employment for the youths with a view to facilitate peace, volunteerism, community services, nation building and other related matters.

“We will however redouble our efforts in 2017 in order to justify for an act to establish the Nigerian Peace Corps, we know there is always room for improvement,’’ he said. (NAN)

Civil Defence is neither recruiting nor doing replacement - CG
By Bamas Victoria | Publish Date: Dec 15 2016 9:06AM
The Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, (NSCDC), Abdullahi Gana Muhammadu, has said that the corps is neither recruiting nor carrying out a  replacement exercise.

A statement from the corps spokesman Emannauel Okeh warns applicants to be aware of fraudsters but that requisition for additional 10,000 manpower for the NSCDC has been put forward to the Federal Government.

It says "However, he (CG) reiterated that Applicants should be wary of fraudsters deceiving them to pay money for recruitment.

The Corps for now is neither recruiting nor doing replacement  as is rumoured in different quarters."

Gana also said that NSCDC has officially applied to the Head of Service to make the Private Guard Company (PGC) Department of the Corps a full Directorate for the task ahead.

The CG issuing the score card for the Corps for overall performance in this year 2016, said, "the Officers and Men of the NSCDC have done so very well, and should make the year 2017 even better."

Benue youths hail National Assembly over passage of Peace Corps BillBy Yemi Itodo on December 10, 2016@dailypostngr

A coalition of various youth associations in Benue State has hailed the National Assembly over the passage of the Nigerian Peace Corps Bill.

The coalition also lauded the patriotic efforts of the sponsors of the Bill and the entire members of both chambers of the National Assembly in ensuring that the Bill saw the light of the day.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja on Friday, after visiting the National Commandant of the Nigerian Peace Corps, Amb (Dr.) Dickson Akoh, the group said the entire Benue Youths and Nigerians in general would ever remain grateful to the Senators and Members of House of Representatives, for living up to their expectations.

The leader of the delegation and Special Assistant to Benue State Governor on Youths Mobilisations, Hon. Adah Anthony Adah (JP) said the passage of the Peace Corps Bill had greatly restored and justified the confidence reposed on the federal lawmakers by Nigerian youths.

While calling on President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently assent to the Bill as a way of fulfilling his campaign promise in job creation and youths empowerment, Adah also acknowledged the resilience of the National Commandant, Dickson Akoh, for not allowing his dream of 18 years to die.

On his part, the Coordinator of Idoma Youth Coalition for Change (IYCC), Comrade Collins Agida said Benue youths were happy that the age long dream of Dickson Akoh did not end in futility.

He said it rather manifested at a time of life, when he was still young and in good health.

Other speakers at the media session, Comrade Fred Oketa, Ba.rr. Oche Ochugboju, Mr. Illiya Hassan and Mrs. Joy Alapa, expressed optimism that the Bill would address issues of unemployment, insecurity and other social vices.

In his response, the National Commandant of Nigerian Peace Corps, Dr. Dickson Akoh said the passage of the Bill was the best thing that had happened to Nigerian Youths in recent times.

According to him “the passage of the Nigerian Peace Corps Bill is not only being celebrated in Nigeria; the whole world is also celebrating it.”

Dr. Akoh also disclosed that Nigeria is the second country to have passed a law for the establishment of the Peace Corps, after the United States of America passed an executive order that the American Peace Corps be established in 1961.

I don't think they will start recruiting at once, some people will start training by january, maybe after training then the will start new recruitment.
Justdulla:

The presidency will surely give the nod go carry out the recruitment.. it has been captured in the budget. Once the senate passes the budget, hopefully january, recruitment will commence.. If i were you, keep liasing with your handler.

Nawaooooooo!!!
Yaasir:
hello my good people.
sorry for getting back late;i was trying to sort some things out.
Hmm!!!! the news is not good at all. The recruitment has finally been hijacked by the National Assembly. Part of the truce to approving firs budget is to accommodate the "submitted list" on the final list. Each principal officer is given 3 slots each while other members got 1 each. There is nothing "general" about recruitment. The man even lamented that something of such could happen under buhari (though his own list is not affected in any way). They will use the budget issue as cover to perpetrate the evil plan. Everybody that may likely raise highbrow has been allocated slot. It will go on as planned but not general again but for selected few. If you know any national assembly member please this is the time to disturb them. Do not be deceived that there will still be merit. It is really sad.
