Sack or the law tajes its course. Which is the right decision ?

The governor of Cross River State, Prof. Ben Ayade has approved the immediate sack of his Special Adviser on Forest Security, Mr. Thomas Obi Tawo, aka 'General Iron' with immediate effect.

This was disclosed by the Senior Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Governor, Mr. Christian Ita in a statement on Friday made available to GRASSROOT REPORTERS.

The governor directed Mr. Tawo to handover all government properties in his care to the office of the Chief of Staff to the governor.

Mr. Tawo was last year, accused of masterminding the lynching of suspected witches and wizards in Boki Local Government Area of the state.

A group, Advocacy for Alleged Witches, had called for the arrest and prosecution of Mr. Tawo.

The group also called for the sack of Mr. Tawo.

Its Chief Executive Officer, Leo Igwe, said:

"The attention of AFAW has been drawn to an incident of witch persecution in Cross River State. In this case, a local mob lynched the alleged witches. Some of the victims have died while others are in the hospital nursing their wounds.

"The unfortunate incident took place in Boki LGA in Central Cross River State. At least a dozen persons, mostly women who were alleged to be witches and wizards, were set ablaze at the instance of an adviser to the state governor who hails from that area. This adviser has been identified as Thomas Obi Tawo (aka General Iron). This incident happened on Tuesday, May 19, 2020."

Also, Mr. Tawo was last month, accused of beating to a pulp, former Cross River State lawmaker, Mark Obi Esq.

It was gathered that Hon. Obi was beaten by thugs led by General Iron and was rushed to the hospital.

A 16-year-old girl identified as Favour was on Thursday, July 22, made to tie a dead child on her back for hours after she was accused of allegedly feeding the dead child with a poison leaf known as 'Gegemu' in Yoruba (botanical name: Datura stramonium).

The incident took place in Kiagbodo, Burutu Local Government Area of Delta.

GRASSROOT REPORTERS gathered that the child, identified as 6-year-old Friday Okoko was rushed to General Hospital, Kiagbodo, where he was pronounced dead by the doctor on duty.

It is not independently clear whether the said leaf was responsible for the death of the child, but the family of the child believes their child died from complications arising from the ingestion of the leaf.

Eyewitnesses who spoke with GRASSROOT REPORTERS expressed sadness over the incident.

A brother of the deceased who spoke on condition of anonymity said the child fell ill few weeks ago and was rushed to the hospital where he was treated and discharged, but fell ill again on Thursday morning. He added that before his brother died, he told them that the accused (Favour), gave him the poisonous leaf to eat.

As of the time of filing this report, no security official was seen by our correspondent at the scene of the incident.

The management of the University of Calabar has threatened to publish the names of its graduates that have refused to collect their certificates years after graduation.

This was made known by the Registrar of the institution, Mr. Gabriel Egbe in a memo obtained by GRASSROOT REPORTERS.

The university said it is shocked over the development, revealing that over 42,000 certificates are yet to claimed, some dating back to the 1980s.

The memo titled "Unclaimed Certificates" read:

"It has been discovered that there are over forty two thousand(42,000) unclaimed certificates of the University of Calabar in Faculties and Institutes. Some of these certificates dates back to the 1980s. The University Management is shocked by this abnormality, and therefore, directs that all who have not collected their Certificates after several years of graduation should do so immediately.

"Persons who are acquainted with these group of graduands, should please inform them to come for collection. Those who do not so before the end of three months from the date of this notice, will have their names published and will be surcharged subsequently". The memo read.

A member of the House of Representatives representing Calabar Municipality/Odukpani Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Eta Mbora has presented two grass cutting machine to members of his constituents as an empowerment.

GRASSROOT REPORTERS gathered that the presentation took place on Saturday, March 6, at his residence in Calabar, the Cross River State capital.

The lawmaker has been criticised for giving out such an empowerment and for poor performance. A constituent from Odukpani LGA who spoke with GRASSROOT REPORTERS on condition of anonymity said:

"It's a big shame that such empowerment could be given by the lawmaker. These people get billions for constituency projects but nothing to show for it."

Hon. Edim was elected under the platform of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in 2003 to serve as a member of the Cross River State House of Assembly.

After a four-year term at the House, he was elected Chairman of the Calabar Municipal Council. He held the position from 2007 to 2013.

In 2015, he was elected into the Federal House of Representatives to represent Calabar Munincipal/Odukpani Constituency and was re-elected in 2019.
