Politics / Serving Akwa Ibom Senator, Bassey Albert Resigns From PDP by Obio4real(m): 12:09pm On Jul 15, 2022
By Obio Monday

The Senator Representing Akwa Ibom North-east Senatorial District, Senator Albert Bassey Akpan has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The Senator had contested the PDP governorship primaries but lost to Pastor Umo Eno.

Akpan, who is the Senate Committee Chairman for Petroleum (Upstream) cited the inability of actualizing the collective yearnings and aspirations of his teeming supporters under the PDP as part of the reasons for his resignation.

In a letter of resignation to the PDP Ward Chairman, Ibiono Ibom Eastern Ward 1 obtained by GRASSROOT REPORTERS, the Senator said he is compelled to resign from the PDP to pursue his goals.

His letter read in read:

"It is with the greatest sense of responsibility, purpose, and love for my people that I make bold this communication.

"I have been a loyal and committed member of the Peoples Democratie Party (PDP) for over 20 years and have through the platform of the party served our people, state, and nation diligently without any blemish, and I have by the grace of God contritbuted positively and impactfully to the growth and development of our dear country, state, and our people in general.

"I believe as a lawmaker and a distinctive one at that, I must at all times advocate and pursue virtues and values that promote and sustain the effective adherence to the rule of law.

"As you are aware, my aspiration to serve our dear state in the office of the Executive Governor is not personal or selfish but rather the collective ambition of our people, based on the principles of justice and equity, to achieve a better and prosperous Akwa lbom State.

"In words of Jean Anouillh and I quote "The only immorality is not to do what one has to do when one has to do it".

"Therefore, after an extensive consultation with my God, family, friends, supporters, and well-meaning believers in a just and equitable Akwa Ibom State across the world, it's obvious that these collective yearnings and aspirations cannot be actualized under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

"Consequently, guided by the sentiments, concerns and worries of our people so expressed on the need to take immediate steps for the actualization of their aspirations, I am therefore compelled to resign my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) forthwith.

"I am convinced that this action will enable me to take the next positive step to meet the hopes and expectations of Akwa lbom People." Senator Albert wrote.

Politics / Ayade Wins APC Senatorial Ticket For Cross River North by Obio4real(m): 2:04pm On Jul 14, 2022
Cross River State governor, Professor Ben Ayade, Thursday emerged candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC for Cross River North Senatorial District.

His Chief of Staff, Hon Martins who won the ticket earlier, withdrew his candidacy, paving way for the emergence of the Governor.

The governor had on several occasions denied nursing interest in contesting for Senate even though he purchased the APC nominations form; insisting that he was focused on emerging as the APC’s presidential candidate.

Governor Ayade was elected at a primary by-election conducted at Ogoja local government headquarters, on Thursday.

GRASSROOT REPORTERS gathered that Ayade emerged unopposed as he was the sole contestant in the exercise.

The Chairperson of the APC Primary Election Committee for Cross River North, Barrister Sameera Tabo, declared the governor winner with 252 votes.

The total number of votes cast was 255 while three votes were invalidated.

According to Sameera, following Orim's withdrawal, the senatorial by- primary election was to ensure that the party fielded a candidate for Northern Cross River under the provisions of the Electoral Act.

In his acceptance speech, Ayade expressed gratitude to the delegates for electing him.

He explained that "after running for the office of the president of Nigeria, I returned home and then came under tremendous pressure from my people.

"They said I did very well when I was a Senator from 2011 to 2015 and insisted I go back and today I have answered their call. Of course, they recognised that this country requires a legislator that has both executive and  legislative experience."

The governor said he was well equipped for the senate and would bring his wealth of experience to bear in the upper legislative chamber if elected.

According to him, "I am very experienced, I know the challenges of our people, I possess all the essential elements that will help us make the appropriate laws and legislation that will change the narrative of our people.

"More importantly, it is imperative to work with the incoming APC president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to reconstruct the concept of development within the African context. Development is about the people and in a sluggish developing economy, emphasis cannot be put on infrastructure alone.

"We will target people, medium scale industries, small scale businesses will be put under sufficient grants and support until they begin to migrate away from poverty.

"So I am happy that I am going back to the legislature where I can add additional value to the next government and this country."

Politics / I Remain A Strong Member Of Apc, I've Not Defected To NNPP - Engr Akak by Obio4real(m): 10:26am On Jul 08, 2022
By Obio Monday

Businessman and former governorship aspirant in Cross River State, Engr Ben Akak has debunked reports that he has defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP).

Reacting to a post shared on Facebook by Engr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the NNPP Presidential Candidate, who posted that Engr Akak is the governorship candidate of NNPP in Cross River State, Engr insisted that he is a strong member of the APC and urged his supporters to disregard the rumour as it is fake.

Engr Kwankwaso’s post had read:

“Engr Ben Akak NNPP Gubernatorial candidate (Cross Rivers State) and Hon Chris Injar Ogar (Serving member Cross Rivers House of Assembly Etung constituency), in company of the NNPP State Chairman and Hon Yakubu Shendam (NNPP Candidate House Of Representatives BOKI/IKOM Federal Constituency) Paid a solidarity visit (7th July, 2022) to the NNPP Presidential candidate HE Engr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, PhD, FNSE in Abuja.”

In statement signed on his behalf by Mr. Isaiah Ekpenyong, Engr Akak said though he visited Engr Kwankwaso, his visit had nothing to do with defecting to the NNPP.

The statement read in full:

MEETING WITH HIS EXCELLENCY, ENGR. RABIU MUSA KWANKWASO: ENGR. BEN AKAK REMAINS AN APC MEMBER, IGNORE ANY MESSAGE TO THE CONTRARY.

Our attention has been drawn to a message posted on the Facebook page of His Excellency, Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso suggesting that Engr. Ben Akak is now the NNPP gubernatorial candidate in Cross River State for the 2023 elections and widely shared by other media platforms, and strongly believe the meeting between Engr. Ben Akak and Engr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso recently, may have been misrepresented in that message.

We want to categorically state that as a politician, Engr. Ben Akak is at liberty to meet with political leaders and statesmen who wish for a better Nigeria and we are very uncomfortable when such meetings are misrepresented to give different meaning to what it is, while leaders are still meeting.

We therefore wish to let the Public, his supporters and well wishers know that Engr. Ben Akak for now remains a strong APC member in Cross River State and that they should ignore any/every message to the contrary, no matter where such message is coming from.

Any change of position will be made known by Engr. Ben Akak and not by a third party.

E-signed

Ekpenyong Isaiah

For: Engr. Ben Akak
