Comrade Usman Umar Barambu, a student of Federal University Dutse, has been elected the new president of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), GRASSROOT REPORTERS reports.

Barambu scored a total of 292 votes to defeat other contestants.

Umar Faruk Lawal came second with 8 votes.

GRASSROOT REPORTERS correspondent reported that shortly after the elections, a faction declared Lawal the winner despite scoring 8 votes.

An indigene of Gombe State, Barambu becomes the first NANS President from the Northeast region.

Other candidates who contested the presidential election were Gambo Mohammed, Usman Kankia.

The Delta State Police Command has arrested Kome Ogaga, a man who was declared wanted for allegedly killing an 11-year-old boy identified as Hossanna Merritt while testing a locally made gun on Monday, 22nd August, 2022, GRASSROOT REPORTERS reports.

Bright Edafe, Delta State Police Public Relations Officer had said that the suspect abandoned his house and ran away after committing the act.

He had pleaded with members of the public who knows his whereabout to report to the nearest police station for the little boy to get justice.

Confirming his arrest on Tuesday, Edafe said suspect was brought to the station today by a relative after he saw his post on Twitter.

More details have emerged on how two widows, Mrs Martina Osom and Mrs Rose Akom were tortured to death by youths on Saturday, August 27 in Ebbaken community in Boje, Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State.

Photos obtained by GRASSROOT REPORTERS shows one of the aged women tied with sticks while the other was set ablaze.

GRASSROOT REPORTERS gathered that the women who are Catholics were returning from early morning prayers when the youths accused them of initiating a member of the community into witchcraft.

They had ordered the women to confess that they are witches.

An eyewitness had told Vanguard that:

The founder and presiding bishop of God's Heritage Global Mission church, Calabar, Cross River State, Bishop Josef Bassey has married a second wife.

The clergyman who married his first wife, Grace Josef Bassey in 1997, shocked many when pictures of the traditional marriage surfaced online.

His marriage to his first, Grace, is blessed with children and the couple celebrated their 19th marriage anniversary in March, 2016.

A source told GRASSROOT REPORTERS that the low-key traditional marriage took place in Calabar, Cross River State, last weekend.

It was gathered that his new wife, an Efik lady, is a member of his church.

GRASSROOT REPORTERS gathered that the Man of God was arrested on Saturday, August 27, 2022 by the police in Thessaloniki at about 3pm.

A source said he was arrested shortly after a crusade at Aristotelous Square, in the center of Thessaloniki.

He was said to have operated a church without the required permit from government authorities.

Some fetish items were discovered in the apartment of a yet-to-be-identified lady in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State on Wednesday morning, August 24, 2022.

GRASSROOT REPORTERS gathered that the items comprising a wooden skull, photos of different people, red cloths, bunch of keys binded together and other fetish items were discovered in the lady's room at Atan Street off Akwa Efak by former Clock 9 Lounge, Uyo.

A source told GRASSROOT REPORTERS that the items were discovered by the landlord of the apartment after the lady failed to pay her rent and was taken to court.

The court granted the landlord's prayers to forcefully evict the lady from the house and detailed court officials to effect the judgment.

Activist, Agba Jalingo has been arrested by men of the Nigeria Police and detained at Alapere Police Station, Lagos.

It was gathered that the policemen arrived in a Toyota Sienna car and held his wife and daughter hostage for over an hour at his Ogudu residence in Lagos State.

The reason for his latest arrest is yet to be ascertained as of press time.

Recall that Mr. Jalingo was first arrested in 2019 on charges of terrorism, treasonable felony and attempt to overthrow the Cross River State Government, which were all thrown out by a Cross River State high court.

He was freed after sending 179 days in detention.

At least one person has been confirmed dead during an attack, yesterday evening, on the convoy of the Senator representing Abia North Senatorial District, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu in Ebem, the headquarters of Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State.


GRASSROOT REPORTERS gathered that the yet-to-be-identified lady was caught by a stray bullet during the exchange of gunfire between the gunmen and Senator Kalu’s security detail.


A source told GRASSROOT REPORTERS that the incident took place shortly after the Senator concluded his ward-ward tour in the town, adding that the Senator’s convoy was attacked on their way out of the town.

No fewer than three persons are feared dead in a fatal accident involving an Akwa Ibom Transport Company (AKTC) passenger bus and an Honda Accord car.

GRASSROOT REPORTERS gathered that the incident occurred on Sunday evening along Abak-Ikot Abasi Road in Akwa Ibom State.


An eyewitness told GRASSROOT REPORTERS that the AKTC bus was heading to Port-Harcourt from Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The source who preferred not to be named said the speeding Honda Accord lost control, skidded off its lane and rammed into the oncoming bus and that three occupants of the Honda Accord died on the spot while non of the AKTC passengers died but sustained injuries and have been rushed to the hospital for treatment.

The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed an officer, PC Liyomo Okoi, who was captured in a viral video flogging a man with a machete in Cross Rivers State, GRASSROOT REPORTERS reports


His dismissal was made known in a statement by the Force Public Relation Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi on Monday.


The statement reads “GROSS MISCONDUCT: NPF has dismissed PC LIYOMO OKOI, Force No 524503, attached to Ekori Divisional Police Headquarters, Cross River State, who was captured in a video that went viral on 31st July 2022, where he was flogging a civilian with cutlass.


“With effect from today 8th August, 2022 He is ceased to be a member of the NPF, and we urge members of the public not to have any official dealings or transactions with him henceforth.

“We will always do the needful to sanitise the NPF and uphold the standards and values of the Nigeria Police Force. THANKS”

An Akwa Ibom State High Court presided over by Justice Bassey Nkanang on Thursday, August 4, sentenced Uduak-Abasi Akpan to death by hanging for murdering a job seeker, Iniubong Umoren, GRASSROOT REPORTERS reports.

Uduak-Abasi Akpan had lured Iniubong Umoren out of her home with a fake job interview, raped and killed her in April in the outskirts of Uyo.

GRASSROOT REPORTERS had reported that he later buried her remains in a shallow grave in his (Akpan) family house where the crime took place.

Uduak-Abasi Akpan had in his confessional statement said:

"I first used condom to have sex with Iniubong Umoren and later removed the condom because I did not enjoy the sex. She became infuriated and I reached out to a stabilizer and a box iron and used it to hit her abdominal part and started to bled. I hit her again and she screamed. I used her jean trousers and strangled her and she became lifeless."

Delivering judgment on Thursday, the court held that:

"The use of dangerous weapons such as a stabilizer and a box iron to attack delicate parts of the human body like the head is a clear pointer that death was probable the consequences of the action."

The Court found Uduak-Abasi Frank Akpan guilty of rape and murder of Iniubong Umoren.

The court however discharged and acquitted his father, Frank Akpan and sister, Bassey Anwan.

A physically challenged Nigerian man identified as Alika Ogochukwu has been murdered in broad daylight by a yet-to-be-identified Italian man.


GRASSROOT REPORTERS gathered that the incident happened in Corso Umberto, Civitanova Marche, Italy at about 2pm, July 29, 2022, with passersby watching and filming the incident.

A video of the incident obtained by GRASSROOT REPORTERS shows both men engaging in a fight, with the Italian man overpowering Ogochukwu and thereafter, used Ogochukwu's crutch to hit him, leading to his death.

It was also gathered that the Italian police ambulance services rushed to the scene of the incident in an attempt to revive Ogochukwu but their efforts failed as he was already dead.


The late 39-year-old Ogochukwu who lived in San Severino March was said to have had an accident which led to his disability and resorted to begging to survive.

A source said the Italian got angry after Ogochukwu allegedly talked to a woman he (Italian) was walking with.


The man was later arrested by the police.

A shrine owned by a popular native doctor called Obioekpo in Ikot Ntuk village, Oruk Anam Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State has been destroyed by security operatives led by the  Chairman of the local government, Rt. Hon. Dr Kingsley Frank


GRASSROOT REPORTERS gathered that that the native doctor is on the run.


The demolition followed intelligent reports and investigation on criminal activities allegedly carried out in the shrine.


It was gathered that the shrine was used  for spiritual fortification of armed robbers, cultists and other criminal elements in the area.


The native doctor is said to be an expert in treating gun wounds of criminals who get into cross-fire with police officers. Three motorcycles, guns and other properties were also recovered from the shrine.


Speaking, the Council Chairman, Dr Frank urged criminal elements to steer clear of the area as the Local Government will not be a comfort zone for them.


He called on the good and peace loving people of the Local Government Area to be security conscious and reach out to him or the police on any suspicious person or activities capable of breaching peace and safety of lives and properties.

Big Brother Naija Season 7 housemate, PharmSavi have come under heavy criticism from his home state, Akwa Ibom, after he made remarks they consider derogatory and demeaning to the people of Akwa Ibom State, GRASSROOT REPORTERS reports.


One of the housemates, Phyna had said during a conversation that most Akwa Ibomites are gatemen and house-helps.


In response to what Phyna said, PharmSavi whose full name is Saviour Akpan, said that was the reason he always hide his surname 'Akpan'.


Many Akwa Ibom indigenes took to social media to register their displeasure over the comments made by Phyna and the failure of PharmSav to defend his people.


They lambasted the reality star for not being proud of his origin, vowing not to support him in the show.

The kidnapped final year student of Arthur Jarvis University, a private university located in Akpabuyo, Cross River State, Josephine, has been rescued by men of the Cross River State Police Command.

The student was kidnapped on Tuesday night on her way from the schools' canteen after her abductors stormed the school, stripped her naked before whisking her away to the nearby bush.

GRASSROOT REPORTERS gathered that three of the kidnap suspects were killed while one other was arrested.

Police sources told GRASSROOT REPORTERS that the victim was rescued on Thursday night and has been reunited with her family.

When contacted, the Cross River State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Irene Ugbo, described the feat achieved by the police as a laudable breakthrough.

She said: “It is true, a crack team of officers combed the creeks of Akpabuyo and rescued the victim at about 11pm Thursday.

“It was based on the order of the Commissioner of Police, CP Aminu Alhassan, and we thank God that the student was rescued alive.

She is recovering as she is also receiving treatment at the moment.

“This is a serious note of warning that we will not tolerate any form of criminality in any part of the state.

“No matter where they hide, we shall always smoke them out, no matter how long it takes.

“Every kidnapper or criminal in the state must understand that we are bringing the fight to them. We are not going to allow any person or group to carry out any nefarious activity in any part of Cross River state,” she warned.
