The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai
Mohammed, has appealed to university teachers across the
country to join the ongoing war against corruption by making
their voices heard.
The Minister made the call when he paid a courtesy visit to
the Vice Chancellor, University of Lagos, Prof. Rahamon
Bello, just before he delivered a paper at the Gani Fawehenmi
Students Chambers Human Rights and Anti-Corruption
Symposium held at the university on Friday.
“I implore you
to join the
current debate
on the war
against
corruption.
Corruption is
the single
most
debilitating
factor other
than insecurity
in Nigeria
today. We
have lost lives,
we have lost
an economy
because of
corruption,” he said.
Alhaji Mohammed said that by virtue of their research work
and academic prowess, the lecturers are better placed to
enlighten the public on the economy, governance and the
polity as part of conscious efforts to further enrich the
nation’s democracy.
“I think the university lecturers, the professors are really
keeping quiet. You have almost insulated yourselves from
politics and governance. Today we hear a cacophony of
voices about the economy, governance and the polity from
people who don’t have the kind of depth and scholarship that
are available in the university.
“I will like to watch a television programme and see a
professor of law with speciality in corruption or terrorism. I
would rather listen to him and I know that many of these
professors have done seminal work on these. There must be
this town and gown relationship,” he said.
The Minister commended the University of Lagos for its
achievements, especially for being the first university to
operate a campus radio and also for its advanced plans to
establish the first campus television station, as disclosed by
the Vice-Chancellor.
Earlier, while welcoming the Minister, the Vice-Chancellor said
that as an alumnus of the institution, Alhaji Mohammed
remained one of the main drivers of positive change in the
country.
“With your pedigree, we are sure your performance in that
position will be to the dignity of the University of Lagos,” he
said.
Alhaji Mohammed read law, as a second degree, at the
university between 1982 and 1985. www.vanguardngr.com/2016/02/we-have-lost-lives-economy-because-of-corruption/ |

ABUJA – The Supreme Court has upheld the outcome of the April 11, 2015, governorship election that produced Governor Darius Ishaku of the People Democratic Party, PDP.A seven-man panel of Justices of the apex court, in a unanimous judgment this afternoon, dismissed the the appeal that was lodged by Senator Aisha Jumai Alhassan of the All Progressives Congress, APC.Justice Bode Rhodes-Vivour who delivered the lead verdict, affirmed the earlier judgment of the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal which declared Gov Ishaku as the valid winner of the gubernatorial contest.“I am of the firm view that there is no merit in this appeal and it is hereby dismissed. The Judgment of the Court of Appeal is affirmed and the election of governor Darius Ishaku is hereby upheld”, Justice Rhodes-Vivour held. However, the apex court panel reserved its reasons for the judgement tillFebruary 22. Ishaku-Darius Senator Alhassan who is currently the Ministerof Women affairs, had prayed the apex court toset aside the verdict of the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal which earlier upheld governor Ishaku’s election. It will be recalled that the appellate court had on December 31, 2015, reversed the judgment of the Taraba State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal which nullified Ishaku’s election. In voiding the decision of the tribunal, a five-man panel of Justices of the appellate court, held that Ishaku, validly won the governorship contest. It maintained that the Justice Musa Danladi Abubakar led tribunal, “grossly misdirected itself”, when it not only nullified governor Ishaku’s election, but went ahead to declare the APC candidate winner.Justice Abdul Aboki who read the lead judgment, said the tribunal acted outside its jurisdiction when it invalidated Ishaku’s election on the premise that he was not validly nominated by the PDP.The appellate court stressed that the issue of nomination of a candidate by a political party “is clearly a pre-election matter which no tribunal has the jurisdiction to entertain”.According to the court, neither the APC nor itscandidate, Alhassan, had the requisite locus-standi to query the outcome of the PDP governorship primary election that produced Ishaku. It emphasised that under section 87(9) of the Electoral Act, only those that participated in the said PDP primary election, has the statutory right to challenge its outcome at the Federal High Court or State High Court. The appellate court said contention on whether the PDP rightly or wrongly conducted its governorship primary election, did not fall within matters that could be entertained by an election petition tribunal.More details soon. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/02/breaking-taraba-poll-supreme-court-upholds-gov-ishakus-election/ |
Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, has expressed his profound condolences to the families of the victims, the entire people and government of Borno State over yesterday’s suicide bombing of an IDP camp in Dikwa. According to Laolu Akande, his Senior Special Assistant, Media and Publicity, the Vice President’s prayers “are that the Almighty God will comfort them and grant the injured persons quick recovery. “The Vice President stated that it is indeed regrettable that the heartless terrorists chose to unleash their wickedness on people who were taking refuge from previous acts of destruction in their homes. “He reassured the nation that the full weight of the federal government’s force will be deployed to hunt down the perpetrators of this evil act and also to confront terrorists continuously in the protection of life, liberty and property of all Nigerians: there will be no hiding place for terrorists. “Prof. Osinbajo has given directives that formidable security in and around the IDP Camps in the country be beefed up and renewed measures put in place to guard against future occurrences. “Finally, the Vice President called on the people of Borno State and all Nigerians that the commitment of the federal government to safety of lives and property continues to be of paramount concern to the Buhari administration.” dailypost.ng/2016/02/10/%E2%80%8Bfg-condoles-victims-of-dikwa-idp-camp-suicide-bombing-in-borno/?utm_source=dlvr_nnd&utm_medium=twitter |
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has noted that the total sum of N398 million proposed in the 2016 budget for the purchase of computers was strange to him. Speaking at a budget defence session before the Senate Committe on Information, Mohammed reacted to questions on the N230 million and N168 million voted for the purchase of computers for the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) and the Film and Video Censors Board, the minister said he was not aware. “No, that is not possible. That was definitely not what was proposed, this cannot be,” the minister protested even as an official of the ministry noted that only N5 million was proposed for the item in the original budget of the NFVCB. But the chairman of the Committee, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe said, “The difference between N5million and N168m is huge.” Managing Director of NAN, Ima Niboro also expressed shock at the N230million for the purchase of the same item as captured under “Capital Votes” in the 2016 budget of NAN. A member of the committee, Senator Ben Murray Bruce had also expressed misgivings about the fact that little or no attention was paid to the core functions of the ministry and parastatals under it at a crucial time when Nigeria was at war in the North East. “I want to ask passionately that they (Ministry/ parastatals) re-submit their budget, taking care of the North East because people are dying. This is not the question of spending more recklessly, I appeal that the budget be resubmitted, taking care of their needs in the North East; it is very important”, Bruce said. Recalling that during the Civil War, radio was a very effective way of communicating with the public, the Senator added that this should also be employed in the war in the North East. He said. “It would have made more sense for the information budget of the Army to be given to the Ministry of Information to equip these stations manned by NTA and FRCN used by the military as a source of communication. “For instance, if there is going to be an air raid in a particular area, we can warn the citizens to stay off that particular area. The media can be used like when Buhari did in 1983 for War against Indiscipline, War Against Corruption, so National Orientation should use the medium that we have. “NTA is a phenomenal network, it has more assets than any station in the whole of Africa today, NTA must be worth 400 million dollars in the open market today.” Bruce noted that Nigeria is in a state of war as such it was important that national orientation should be in the fore front, followed by NTA and FRCN to be led by the Minister working with the military to guarantee that innocent lives are not lost. www.theheraldng.com/n398m-votes-computers-2016-budget-strange-lai-mohammed/?utm_source=dlvr_nnd&utm_medium=twitter |

By Femi Aribisala THERE are so many things wrong with the PDP. It is an understatement to insist it is a very imperfect political party. But for everything that is wrong with the PDP, the APC is worse. It is ludicrous to pretend the APC is squeaky-clean while the PDP is corrupt when alarge chunk of APC members were formerly in the PDP. Today, both the Senate president and the Speaker, for example, are former PDP members. These turncoats did not become new creations when they crossed over to the APC. When queried as to why APC’s so-called anti-corruption campaign is mostly directed at PDP opposition members, the APC party chairman John Odigie-Oyegun insists the PDP has been the party in power for the last 16 years. This is disingenuous because the APC and its legacy parties have also been in power for the last 16 years. ACN/APC has ruled Lagos for the last 16 years. Let EFCC beam its anti-corruption searchlight on that state and let us see if it will not throw up a cesspool of corruption. If EFCC can probe Sule Lamido who was governor of Jigawa for eight years; what prevents it from probing Rotimi Amaechi who was governor of Rivers State also for eight years? Even if we were to accept the ridiculousAPC treatise that there is a corruptible seed in the PDP which immediately disappears when aPDP member becomes an APC member, then itbecomes necessary to probe Amaechi in the years he was still a PDP governor, before he became a new creation of the APC. The same would apply, for example, to Rabiu Kwankwasoas PDP governor of Kano before he switched to the APC, Jonathan statesmanship To win the last presidential election, APC had to match the political rigmaroles of the PDP. Indeed, APC prevailed because it was ultimately more unscrupulous. APC successfully exaggerated the vote in its areas of strength in the North-West far more than thePDP did in the South-South and the South-East. In the process, twice the number of people were alleged to have voted in old Kano (Kano and Jigawa) than did in Lagos. So meticulous were Kano voters, they did not void a single ballot out of over 2 million votes cast. If you believe that, you can believe anything. In the final analysis, APC won the election because of the humanity and political maturity of one man: Goodluck Jonathan. Presidents don’t lose elections in Nigeria. The Nigerian president possesses the power and resources to manipulate any and every election to his advantage. Make no mistake about it, Goodluck Jonathan wanted to win the last election. However, he did not want to win at all costs. He lost the election because, from the get-go, he was prepared to lose for the sake of advancing the democratic process in Nigeria. The evidence is there for all to see. Out of five elections conducted between 2011 and 2015, the PDP lost four, in spite of being the party in power at the centre. It lost in Ondo. It lost in Edo. It lost in Anambra. It lost in Osun. It only won in Ekiti. In effect, the presidential election was paradoxically the icing on the cake. The PDP not only lost that election, Jonathan accepted defeat even before the final results were tallied, in spite of all the rigmarole that attended it. He did not ask for dogs and baboons to be soaked in blood. APC winner-take-all It should be clear to Nigerians today that we are now in the grip of a very different captivity in the APC. During the campaign for the last elections, APC members were lavish with threats of fire and brimstone should their partylose. They told Nigerians in no uncertain termsthat if they lost, they would not accept defeat but would even form their own kangaroo government. Now that the APC has captured power at the centre, they are hell-bent on prosecuting the principle of winner-takes-all. Today, the APC not only controls the presidency, it prevails in 22 of the 36 states in Nigeria. The PDP, on the other hand, controls only 13 states; with the remaining solitary state held by APGA. However, the APC is not satisfied with this supremacy. It is determined to contest the verdict of the election virtually everywhere it lost. While it claims the 2015 election was free and fair where it won, it insists the election was crooked where it lost. In short, the APC is determined to have its cake and eat it too. Immediately President Buhari was elected, he started preparing the grounds for 2019. This involves releasing EFCC dogs against 2019 presidential hopefuls. During the congratulatory visit of a delegation from Benue, he said jokingly: “I beg Senator Akume and the governor-elect not to make my 2019 attempt too difficult.” Jokes often reveal true intentions. Otega Emerhor, APC governorship candidate in Delta State, spoke the mind of the APC during a congratulatory visit to newly-elected Buhari. He told the president: “As you are aware, Delta State, along with Akwa Ibom and Rivers, are rich in oil resourcesand PDP is determined to hold on to these states at all cost to utilize the huge revenue base of these states to re-launch itself to national reckoning. It is, therefore, strategic for APC and your administration to pay particular attention and to assist us put in place modalities to break the stronghold of PDP in Delta and the other states.” Cash-cow states This agenda has been executed with single-minded APC rascality. APC challenged the outcome of elections in the oil-rich Southern states. It then embarked on an onslaught of intimidatory attacks on the judiciary to make it fall in line with its agenda. To ensure it prevailed, some tribunal chairmen were summarily dismissed, replaced with more maleable choices. Some cases were even transferred to APC’s presidential stronghold in Abuja on spurious grounds. So doing, APC secured the verdicts it wanted. The tribunals cancelled the elections in Rivers, Abia and Akwa Ibom, requiring them to be rerun. However, APC met a firewall in the Supreme Court. The apex court refused to be intimidated, in spite of President Buhari’s loaded statement in far-away Ethiopia that the Nigerian judiciary is his major “headache” in the fight against corruption. It overturned the doctored verdicts of the appeal courts in Rivers, Abia and Akwa Ibom, restoring the mandate of their PDP governors. So doing, the “Supremes” immediately became public enemy number one of the APC. APC Chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun, put his foot in his mouth when he could not hide his displeasure that big fish Rivers State slipped away from APC’s greedy clutches. He said: “I still find the judgment on the Rivers State governorship election totally astonishing. There is something fundamentally wrong in thejudiciary. We have lost very important resource-rich states to the PDP. No matter howcrude oil prices have fallen, it is still the most important revenue earner for the country.” There was nothing wrong with the judiciary when it ruled in favour of the APC in Yobe, Ogun, Lagos and Benue. But when it ruled against the APC in Rivers, Abia and Akwa Ibom, something became fundamentally wrongwith it. The truth is that the issue of the legalityof the usage of the card reader as opposed to the manual register had been established in the case of Agbaje versus Ambode in Lagos. To that extent, the tribunals in the South-South erred in law by not using the same principle in subsequent cases. Instead they agreed to kowtow to APC pressure. For a party that insists it is anti-corruption and claims to be prosecuting the PDP for using public funds to fight elections, Oyegun revealed APC interest in the South-South states is because they are resource-rich. This is the same language we heard from APC legislators when they were fighting themselvessilly over “juicy” chairmanship positions in the National Assembly. If APC were not a past-master at using public funds to finance elections, why would it be so determined to control the resource-rich South-South oil-states by hook or crook? http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/02/the-greed-and-rascality-of-the-apc/ |

LAGOS— The Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has said that Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product, GDP, will increase to $2 trillion by 2030 from its present N514 billion, if the country reduced corruption to the level of Ghana and Malaysia. The minister, who quoted PricewaterhouseCoopers, PwC, report, while addressing members of the Advertising Association of Nigeria, ADVAN, an Associationof Marketing Directors of corporate organisations and a sectoral body of the Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria, APCON, said: “If Nigeria reduces corruption to the level in Ghana and Malaysia, Nigeria’s GDPwill increase to $2 trillion from N514 billion in 2030.“Here, we are trying to rebuild Nigeria and lay anew foundation where companies will be able to operate. If we can cut corruption, even if oil price is $10 per barrel, we will still be able to achieve targets.”Mohammed, who briefed the association of government’s plan of what he described as father of all campaigns, a national orientation campaign tagged: ‘Change begins with me’ to be spearheaded by the President himself, said:“It is true we campaigned on the change mantra, but this change mantra is largely misunderstood by Nigerians which they (Nigerians) misinterpreted to mean that as soon as Buhari is sworn in, immediately things will change in Nigeria.“It does not happen that way. Nigerians cannotcontinue to do things the same way and expectdifferent results. Indiscipline and corruption are not restricted to people at the top. Each Nigerian has a role to play and that is why we are launching the campaign.”He said everyone was guilty of the malaise that was crippling the society today, adding that “average Nigerian with opportunity will likely cheat. The malaise cuts across gender, age and professions.“This kind of campaign we want to run will touch every Nigerian. It will start with the President who will say my name is Muhammadu Buhari and I don’t expect kick back from any of my ministers, change begins with me. It goes for professions, students etc. It will be comprehensive and in phases and that is why we need ADVAN.“The corporate Nigeria will be the first beneficiary of the campaign. For instance, if there is security, the investors will find the environment conducive enough to invest. Businesses have lost a lot to insecurity in the north. If we minimize corruption, the money could be used to develop the economy,” he said.Responding, President of ADVAN, David Okeme, promised to partner with government to deliver on its programmes. He said ADVAN took this step because businesses needed a country to thrive, adding that it was in business interest that security was in place, corruption was reduced and other economic indices were looking up. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/02/nigerias-gdp-to-hit-2trn-by-2030-if-lai-mohammed/ |

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday insisted that the Boko Haram militant sect has been technically defeated, despite recent attacks by the group. The terrorists’ recent deadly attack was carried out on Dalori, a village in Borno State, where about 86 persons were killed. The militant group was said to have burnt some children alive when it overran the community, which is four kilometres away from the capital city of Maiduguri. The President had recently said the insurgent group had been technically defeated, and speaking to BBC on Friday, he maintained that indeed the terrorists had been technically defeated. “Well, all I know is that out of the 14 Local Government Areas in Borno State where they (Boko Haram) used to hold and hoist their flag, they are nowhere in charge of any of them again. But they can still regroup and go after attacking soft targets,” he said. When the interviewer asked whether it was fair to say a group which killed over 65 persons in a single attack had been “technically defeated,” the President responded, “Well, that’s your own description of it. My own description is that they can no longer mobilise enough forces to attack police and army barracks and destroy aircraft like they used to do. They can no longer do that.” Boko Haram is responsible for the killings of over 17,000 Nigerians, particularly in the North-East. During his electioneering, President Buhari had promised to defeat the group if elected. source: https://www.today.ng/news/national/75993/buhari-insists-boko-haram-technically-defeated-despite-recent-attacks |

TheUAE is very important to the country.“Don’t be surprised that in the coming week or two, you will see high level security officials leaving Nigeria for the UAE to begin to give expression to our wish to enjoy this new cooperation between the two countries with a view to recovering stolen assets. “There are numerous agreements we have also signed with them.
