PoliticsMethodist Church To FG -We Are Suffering Despite Sufficient Oil. by Ochinex(op): 7:46pm On Apr 12, 2016
Methodist Church Nigeria has urged the Federal Government to urgently halt the perennial fuel scarcity that has adversely affected economic activities across the country.
Rt. Rev. Lawson Elom, the Methodist Bishop of Abakaliki Diocese, made the call in his State of the Nation address during the 22nd Annual Synod, on Tuesday in Abakaliki.
According to him, the fuel situation in the country has subjected the people to untold hardship.
“No leader has satisfactorily explained the cause of the scarcity, as the oil which God used in blessing the country has turned into an essential commodity.
“Many car owners have parked their cars due to the scarcity. Nigeria has the financial capabilities to revamp its refineries to refine locally produced crude oil,” he said.
The cleric also urged the Federal Government to address the menace of Fulani herdsmen in many parts of the country.
“The activities of the herdsmen recently are gradually taking a national course which needs to be halted by the Federal Government.
“Government’s intervention will prevent an impending inter-tribal conflict, as the police in particular have raised alarm of such activities especially at Agatu community of Benue,’’ he said.
In his address, Prelate of the Methodist Church Nigeria, His Eminence, Samuel Uche, urged Nigerian leaders and the people to pray fervently for God’s intervention in the problems confronting the country.
“The country is confronted with issues of insecurity, ethnic and religious fanaticism, economic recession, balkanisation threat by some groups, among others.
“Government at all levels should create the enabling environment for the resuscitation of the economy which would enable the youths in particular to be self-reliant,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the conference is: ‘Chosen to Bear Fruits,’ while issues concerning the growth of the church in the state and country was also discussed. (NAN)

EducationBudget: FG Insists Calabar-abuja Rail Project Submitted To NASS by Ochinex(op): 6:32pm On Apr 12, 2016
The Federal Government on Tuesday insisted that the Calabar-Abuja rail project was part of the 2016 budget submitted by the executive to the National Assembly.
The Minister of Budget and National Planning, Mr Udo Udoma made the clarification in a statement issued by his Media Adviser, Mr James Akpandem.
The minister in the statement admitted that while the Budget Office made some errors while preparing the 2016 budget, these errors were corrected by the ministry of budget and national planning before they were submitted to the relevant committees of the National Assembly.
It said one of the budget that was corrected was that of the Ministry of Transportation.,adding that this was what was accepted by the committee and also defended by the Minister of Transportation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi.
It said, “The details of the 2016 budget were received by the President on Thursday, April 7, 2016.
“Immediately this was received the President, desirous of signing the document into law as soon as possible, directed that copies should be made available to Heads of the various Ministries, Departments and Agencies of the Federal Government.
“With reference to the specific issue of the Calabar – Lagos rail project, we will like to state that the two railway projects, Lagos – Kano and the Calabar – Lagos, are very important projects of the present administration; and it was always the intention of the Executive to have both projects reflected in the budget submitted to the National Assembly.
“However, it will be recalled that the Budget Office made a number of errors in the initial proposals of a number of ministries. These errors were all corrected by the Ministry of Budget and National Planning and the corrected versions were submitted to the relevant committees of the National Assembly.
“This included that of the Ministry of Transportation. The amended Ministry of Transportation budget was accepted by the relevant committees and that was the version defended by the Minister of Transportation and his team.”
The statement stated that the two rail projects are part of those for which the President is currently negotiating funding with the Chinese government.
According to the statement, the N60b provided in the budget for the Lagos – Kano and Calabar – Lagos rail lines, respectively, is counterpart funding, to support the Chinese financing for the projects.
It said, “These projects are part of the Strategic Implementation Plan of the government which was disclosed by the Minister of Budget and National Planning at the National Economic Council Retreat in March 2016, in the presence of state governors.”

EducationStudents' Protest, Killing, Ploy To Sack Me.- Uniport V.C by Ochinex(op): 6:21pm On Apr 12, 2016
THE Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Prof. Ndowa Lale, has said that the protest carried out by the students of his institution, which led to the death of a student was a ploy to remove him from his current position.
Lale made this claim on Tuesday when the Acting Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Mr. Mobolaji Odesanya, visited UNIPORT to ascertain the level of damage in the institution during Monday’s protest.
The students had demonstrated against the institution’s policy of ‘No fee, No exams’, a development that led to the killing of one of their colleagues.
The vice chancellor explained that he was suspecting that the protest was not ordinary, adding that there was a likelihood that the students’ demonstration was sponsored.
He said, “I understand that some of them (protesters) are in touch with some other people who for whatever reasons want me, the VC, out of office. Therefore, they think that if they do this protest that the vice chancellor would be removed from office.”
The vice chancellor disclosed that the management of the institution regretted the death of one of the protesting students, Mr. Peter Ofurum, but denied knowledge of the circumstances that led to the death.
Lale stated that the protest had nothing to do with the hike in tuition, but bemoaned that the act was masterminded by students, who wanted to be certified without sitting for any examinations.
“As a university, we sincerely regret and mourn with the family of the deceased. I hear a student died in some circumstances that are not very clear to me. I regret it so much that such happened.
“All you hear is that the VC increased fees. Firstly, in federal universities, we don’t pay tuition fees, government only allows us to take some charges in which we use to provide students certain services.
“The charges that are being paid today in this institution were negotiated last two years under the administration of Prof. Joseph Ajienka, the former VC of the institution.
“I have just stayed nine months, during this period and I have not contemplated or dreamt of increasing any payment by a kobo.
“The students know it, but because they want to score cheap points, they are misleading the public. UNIPORT students want to acquire degrees without writing exams. If such schools existed, I would have attended because I wrote exams in all the schools I attended.
“Last semester, we also went through tough times in order to ensure that the students write exams and they wanted to go on rampage. This time it is standard practice that students must register to be bonafide members of a school; that is all we asked them to do,” he said.
He, however, argued that the policy of ‘No Fees, No Exam’ was not strange, adding that nobody goes to school without payment.
In his remark, Odesanya, who is also the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Administration, said the command was set to carry out an autopsy on the murdered student.
Odesanya said, “We heard of a corpse that was recovered. This corpse has been sent to the mortuary ready for autopsy. Apart from that, there was no other report of death.
“The police did not move into the campus until late 9pm when the VC wrote officially to the police to move in because we have no right to move in when we have not been given the permission to do so.
“Prior to that time, we were outside preventing the student from blocking the road and preventing the breach of the public peace. The police did not use firearm on the students and they did not shoot at any student.”
Speaking with our correspondent, the spokesman of the university, Dr. William Wodi, said the school authorities were still taking inventory of property that were damaged by students during the protest.
