Contribution of the SE (and Igbo) to Nigeria’s Economy In response to What Really South East Contribute To The Nigerian Economy https://www.nairaland.com/3852085/what-really-south-east-contribute This argument keeps rearing its ugly head, pushed on by SW irredentists. But the first thing we need to remember is that the SE gets the least from the national coffers, so it is expected to contribute the least. However, this is not the case in reality, as I equate the SE with Igbo, in some instances. Here is how Igbos, even though they get less from the national purse, actually contribute most. 1. There are give and take 17 million Nigerians abroad; 60% of those are Igbos. We know that Nigerians abroad remit billions of dollars to Nigeria annually. Therefore, 60% of the billions of remittances are from Igbos who are mainly of SE origin. The Nigerian Feds have confirmed that the remittances contribute significantly to the economy. 2. Nollywood brings in billions of Naira to Nigeria. We all know that the Nollywood in question is Igbo-dominated. 3. Igbos constitute the bulk of foreign business people who import things into the Nigerian market. We know that importation goes along with payment of import duties, taxes and other levies. 4. The SE, by taking less out of the federal purse, contribute most in keeping some savings for Nigeria. Unfortunately the savings are swallowed by the crooks from all parts of Nigeria. 5. Three SE cities are among the 6-most industrialized cities/towns in Nigeria. Lagos, followed by Onisha and Nnewi(Anambra) Port Harcourt (Rivers), Aba(Abia), Agbara (Ogun), Onitsha (Anambra) are undoubtedly the most industrialized places in Nigeria. This means employment and tax payments to the national purse coming from these industries. 6. SEners/Igbos are the least employed by the federal government. This means they not only take less out of the system by way of salaries and benefits, but also by way of having less opportunity of stealing from the government, compared with other zones. 7. Igbos, by migrating out of Nigeria in more numbers than other groups, contribute less in putting undue strain on the overstretched infrastructure of Nigeria. Most of the strain received by the infrastructure in Nigeria comes from the North. If all Nigerians were to stay back home, we all know how crazy it would get. 8. Most of the sports people in Nigeria are Igbos. That is a contribution that is probably not so easy to quantify monetarily. 9. Moreover, 70% of the investments in Abuja are Igbo-owned and about 30-40% of those in Lagos are also Igbos owned. These investors pay taxes to the governments. |

This tread should not be filled with Tribal and sentimental comment as my point would be Unsentimental. I have been on Nairaland since 2013.I Dont comment on tribal issues as it doesn't drop food on my table. Momentously, I would like to correct the flippant and unreasonable tribal E-war being displayed here on nairaland between the Igbos and Yoruba. Trust me, it is highly Unreasonable and lame. Juxtaposing relevant and irrelevant things to the gain of the other region who has the envision of Born to rule. To some apparent point, I agreed to Reno Omokri on his write-ups about Igbo's not to see the Yoruba as coward https://www.nairaland.com/3832213/why-ndigbo-should-stop-viewing but was disappointed that a reasonable and responsible man like Reno Omokri called Ojukwu, an Igbo and a regional war Lord a Coward despite him staying and fighting the country in an analysis of 10 to 1 combatants. With all due respect sir, you should have made you point or advise without any name mentioned. These are the things that causes regional racism between two province. I believe Ojukwu and Reno Omokri are a role models to some people from their respective regions or even beyond, saying what he said would immediately change the mindset of straight thinking fan to a drastic lion to any referred region most especially to the aggrieved region. I thought he was trying to build the bridge gap between the two conflicting region from his previous tweets and comments. But though, his statement on his Southern unity is highly commendable. The South no doubt are the most developed and educated region in Nigeria, The southern part of Nigeria should be the ones who raise the light while other regions follows, but the born to rule precinct has used the opportunity of the two rival province to highjack leadership role in this very country. About the Issue of Biafra, I stand for Reconstruction of Nigeria but to me, a husband and a wife can divorce if the interrelationships fails. If the marriage between Hausas, Igbos and Yorubas is all about regional bashing, Splitting of blood and killings, then Referendum should be the way. I drop my pen. |

Op, is your name Nosa or you are related to any Nosa? Sha, Only you nose your identity. |
Before you think any thing negative against me or the article am going to put down, I should say Yes, am a bonifide Igbo dude and hey, i reside in the north. Apparently, at time I hear Hausas and Yoruba's are higher in population than the Igbos and other ethnic groups, of a true am bewildered because from normal analysis, the Igbo's are enormous and vast compelled to any other tribe in the Country.. The Igbo is known to have suffered Marginalization right after the Civil war ( war the British helped Nigerians, killing innocent civilians and gave them 20ponds to start all over) Marginalizing them, Politically, Economically and otherwise. The Igbo's are still strong and still rule the country's Economy even without the help of the So-called government. Now back to my Point, I said, the Igbos are higher in Population than any other tribe in the country. I have my Solid and Empirical Backings to support my saying... An Average Hausa man does not travel, Nationally and Internationally. I've stayed in the north for over 20 years, and have observed them for many years, believe you me they Dont Travel. Why would they travel? What Lucrative business can they do apart from the north were they sell meat, clothes and shoes, by the road side imported from Aba? would they dare come to the East and compete with the Easterners in business line? I Dont think so. Upon the Hausa's being at their base, the north seems Empty and Scanty.. I have been to Jigawa, Kastina and Kebbi all you see there are the Fulanis and Niger's which you can't call Hausas. Indeed, their lands are intimidating but scanty. Down here in the east, I can bet you the Hausas all combined are not up to 1million. Same applies to the Yorubas. They don't travel.. infact, I haven't seen any Yorubas In the East, and little or non in the north. Remember, Lagos in no mans' land, and the population between Igbos and Yorubas are 50-50. Yorubas are very rare to find, except in their land ( Osu, Ondo,Oyo.. Ilorin has been taken by the Fulanis chasing majority of the Yorubas out and tuning some to Muslim by force.)and some travels abroad eg London and some European countries cause have been to london before and I know what am saying. Coming down to the East, they are all over the country and internationally like in the Usa, Malaysia, China, Thailand, Germany etc, they own these places. In fact their is a say, if you Dont fine any Igbo man in a particular place, country, that place is the most unsecured place in this world. Igbos are all over the country to the extent they now install Eze and created kingdoms anyplace they settle because of the vast populations.eg Lagos, Ilorin, Ibadan, Kano, Kaduna and Abuja etc even abroad Igbos are over populated in the East, and have moved further to other states to colonize their Economy. My point is, The Hausa population is not what you think it is, the Yorubas are not even close .. I drop my pen. No tribalism, I only stated how it is .. |
