Arcording to CNN The driver of a Ferrari carrying pro golfer Bill Haas was killed after crashing and rolling the Italian sports car in Los Angeles' Pacific Palisades neighborhood, police said. Police did not identify the driver. A statement from the PGA Tour and Haas' manager, Allen Hobbs, identified the driver in Tuesday night's "serious car accident" as a member of a family with whom Haas was staying for the Genesis Open. The 35-year-old golfer was slated to tee off Thursday in the tournament. The Riviera Country Club hosting the Open is just a few minutes' drive from Pacific Palisades. Haas is currently ranked 67th in the world. "While Bill escaped serious injuries and has been released from the hospital, he is understandably shaken up and -- more importantly -- his deepest condolences go out to the host family during this tragic and difficult time," the statement said. Though the statement says Haas avoided serious injury, the Los Angeles Fire Department said the golfer was transported to a hospital in serious condition. The Ferrari's driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Haas will withdraw from the Genesis Open so he can recover at home in Greenville, South Carolina, the PGA and his agent said. The Ferrari clipped a Toyota SUV driven by actor Luke Wilson before colliding with a BMW, Los Angeles Police Detective Jeff Fischer told Source affiliate KTLA. The SUV suffered only minor damage. "If you look at the scene, you see scrub marks," Fischer told the station. "I believe there was a little bit of speed to it." A 50-year-old woman was also injured and transported to a local hospital in serious condition, according to the fire department. It's not clear what vehicle she was traveling in. Granit Xhaka rocked Chelsea with the winner as Arsenal set up a Carabao Cup meeting with Manchester City. The Gunners' Swiss midfielder prodded home a 60th-minute winner from close range to send his side into the February 25 showpiece at Wembley. Eden Hazard had earlier given Antonio Conte's side the lead with a seventh-minute opener. Arsenal levelled when Antonio Rudiger turned Nacho Monreal's effort into his own net. |
France’s foreign minister said on Wednesday there was no perspective of a political solution for Syria other than U.N.-led peace talks in Vienna, which he said were the “last hope”. “Today, there is no political perspective that presents itself, other than -- and it’s the last hope -- the meeting that will be held in Vienna tomorrow under the auspices of the United Nations, where the belligerents will be present and where we hope a peace agenda will be mapped out,” Jean-Yves Le Drian told French lawmakers. Staffan de Mistura, the United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, has invited the Syrian government and opposition to a two-day meeting in the Austrian capital. It comes at a time when there is little sign of any political breakthrough and a few days before Russia, a key backer of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, convenes a Syrian congress in Sochi. De Mistura has presided over a series of Syrian talks in Geneva, with a mandate to discuss new elections, reformed governance, a new constitution and the fight against terrorism. The warring sides have never talked face-to-face, and it was only in the eighth round last December, that the opposition united in one delegation, raising hopes of direct talks for the first time.... The U.S. Embassy in Israel will move to Jerusalem by the end of 2019, U.S. Vice President Mike Pence said in a speech to the Israeli parliament on Monday that highlighted a policy shift that has stoked Palestinian anger and international concern. President Donald Trump last month recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and said he would move the U.S. Embassy there - dismaying Palestinians who claim the eastern part of the city and angering Arab states across the region. “In the weeks ahead, our administration will advance its plan to open the United States Embassy in Jerusalem – and that United States Embassy will open before the end of next year,” Pence said. “Jerusalem is Israel’s capital – and, as such, President Trump has directed the State Department to immediately begin preparations to move the United States Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.” The speech was briefly disrupted, at the outset, by Israeli Arab parliament members who held up protest signs in Arabic and English, reading “Jerusalem is the capital of Palestine”, and were ejected by ushers. Pence responded to the fracas by saying with a smile: “It is deeply humbling for me to stand before this vibrant democracy.” Though shunned by the Palestinians, the Trump administration says it remains committed to helping them and Israel negotiate a peace deal. Those talks have been stalled for almost four years. - FAIR MEDIATOR - Responding to Pence’s speech, Nabil Abu Rdainah, a spokesman for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, said: “If the United States wanted to a play a role of a mediator in the peace process it must be a fair mediator and it must abide by (international) resolutions.” Palestinians seek East Jerusalem, including the walled Old City with its holy sites, as the capital of their own future state. Israel, which annexed East Jerusalem after capturing it in 1967 in a move not internationally recognised, regards all of the city as its “eternal and indivisible capital”. Lionel Messi has broken Gerd Muller's long-standing record for the most league goals scored for the same club in Europe's top five divisions. The Barcelona superstar, who equalled the tally while making his 400th LaLiga appearance for the Calatan giants against Levante last weekend, netted his 366th goal in Spain's top flight against Real Sociedad on Sunday. Luis Suarez helped Barcelona overcome a two-goal deficit to claim a 4-2 win over Real Sociedad on Sunday night in their first league win at Anoeta since 2007. The hosts raced out to a 2-0 lead through Willian Jose and Juanmi, but a late first-half goal from Paulinho swung the momentum in Barcelona's favour, and Suarez would complete the comeback with a pair of second-half strikes before Lionel Messi topped it off with a late free kick. With the victory Barcelona remain nine points up on second-place Atletico Madrid in the table, and a whopping 19 points in front of rivals Real Madrid. Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde made one change of note, as Andres Iniesta was rested and replaced in midfield by Andre Gomes. The Anoeta ghosts that routinely spook the Catalonians decided to make an early appearance, manifesting themselves in Willian Jose's 11th minute opener. Xabi Prieto curled in a cross from the right and Willian Jose, who scored the Real Sociedad goal in last season's 1-1 draw between the two teams in San Sebastian, thumped in a header past goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen to make it 1-0 to the hosts. The Real Sociedad goal left Barcelona flustered. Eusebio's team was making life very uncomfortable for the visitors and any time Messi was on the ball, there were at least two blue and white jerseys nipping at his heels.Barcelona could call themselves lucky that it wasn't 2-0 later in the half, as a deflected Willian Jose shot rolled in past Ter Stegen. However, referee Gonzalez Gonzalez whistled that Ivan Rakitic had been fouled, but replays showed little evidence of that.Real Sociedad had Barcelona on the ropes. Willian Jose was an absolute beast up top for the Basques, giving Barcelona centre-backs Gerard Pique and Thomas Vermaelen a fit. At the other end, the hosts were also clamping down on Messi's partner in crime, Jordi Alba. The Barcelona left-back, usually so active in attack, barely made any of his trademark runs down the left flank. Manchester City's domestic unbeaten run was brought to the end by Liverpool, but Jurgen Klopp's side did it the hard way. Having taken a 4-1 lead, they just about held on to inflict a first league defeat for City in one of the games of the season. Liverpool came out determined to avenge the 5-0 defeat at the Etihad and end City's unbeaten Premier League run in the process, and a stunning atmosphere inside the stadium spurred the hosts on. The Anfield faithful roared as their side took an early lead through Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. The former Arsenal midfielder was allowed to drive forward before unleasing a powerful strike into the low corner from 20 yards. Ederson got down but could not keep it out and the Reds saw their early pressure rewarded. A dismal run at Anfield for the Citizens, who have failed to come away with a win since 2003, looked set to continue with Liverpool smothering Guardiola's side with a high line of pressure and they even threatened to double their lead as City piled bodies forward and allowed spaces for Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah to drift into on the counter. However, Liverpool eventually gave into complacency and the visitors settled on the ball. The hosts took a step back and attempted to protect their lead, but City know how to break down a defensive side as well as anyone and Leroy Sane beat Karius at the near post with a powerful strike. City were typically dominant as the second half got underway and Nicolas Otamendi even headed a corner onto the crossbar as the visitors looked to keep their domestic record intact. But the chances of that happening took a serious blow in the space of ten minutes. - Goals Galore - First, Roberto Firmino shrugged Stones off the ball and delicately lifted it over Ederson to put the Reds in front and just two minutes later Sadio Mane sent a thumping strike into the top corner. The home supporters were euphoric and the Citizens' shock was furthered when Mohamed Salah beat Ederson from 40 yards after the goalkeeper raced off his line to clear. Mauricio Pochettino believes Harry Kane is going to break all of Tottenham and England's goalscoring records after he earned a piece of club history in Saturday's 4-0 victory over Everton. This season has already seen Kane surpass Alan Shearer's mark for the most Premier League goals in a calendar year with 39, while also finishing 2017 with more than Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. And he became Tottenham's leading Premier League goalscorer with his 97th and 98th top-flight goals for the club, moving past Teddy Sheringham with a brace at Wembley. Speaking to BT Sport afterwards, Spurs boss Pochettino said: "He's so talented, so professional, I am very happy. I congratulate him, he deserves the credit. "In this way he's going to break all the records in the Premier League and England. I'm so happy, it's fantastic because he helps for the win." Jimmy Greaves is Tottenham's record goalscorer in all competitions with 266 and Pochettino is pleased Kane has a long way to go before he breaks it. He added: "That is far away, but that is good because otherwise he breaks a record every week." Tottenham are now level on points with fourth-placed Liverpool and only three behind Chelsea, the defending champions having been held to a 0-0 draw by Leicester City that denied them the chance to move above Manchester United in second..... Real Madrid were once again left frustrated after failing to score despite ample chances in front of goal. The Spanish giants could also feel aggrieved as a disallowed goal and a strong penalty appeal didn't fall in their favour. Gareth Bale headed in a goal in the 18th minute of the game which was ruled offside by officials, much to the players' protests. Replays show that the call was a lot closer than originally thought, but that it looked like a correct decision nonetheless.. In addition, the Madrid club had a penalty shout for handball against Villarreal's Alvaro shot down by the referee who didn't believe it was intentional, with the defender having little time to react to a deflection off Bale. Despite these 'injustices', Zidane's players could have easily been two or three goals up if they had been more clinical. They had numerous chances in the first-half with most falling to star man Cristiano Roanldo who has also had a frustrating season having only scored four league goals so far. Villarreal's goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo was arguably the star of the show, until Fornals' goal in the second half, with the Spaniard making save after save to keep his side in it. His highlight coming at the end of the first half, when he made a fine reflex save to deny Ronaldo after he was put through by a beautiful pass by team-mate Isco.... United and Sevilla are locked in a bitter ticket war over their forthcoming Champions League last-16 clash with the Spanish club saying they will report United to UEFA for not offering their fans enough seats. Sevilla claim that United have not followed UEFA’s ticket guidelines in allocating 5% of the tickets to their supporters and had been given just under 3,000 tickets when they should have had 3,800. Sevilla are also upset their fans are being charged £89 but United say that is because the Spanish club declined to lower their own prices. Sevilla are charging United fans between £89 and £133 pounds ($120 to $179) to watch the first leg at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan on February 21, which the English club considered excessive. “Sevilla will subsidise the tickets of the fans who go to Manchester so they will not pay more than the €60 established in the first place,” read a Sevilla statement. “We will make UEFA aware that five percent of the stadium is not being made available (to our fans) and the unilateral price rise – after the official request for tickets (from Sevilla) – as well as asking them to verify that Sevilla fans do not pay a penny more than British fans for similar tickets, as per the competition regulations.” United say they will refund each fan £35, taken from the £89 they have decided to charge the Sevilla fans for the return leg on March 13 after the Spanish club refused to budge over their own prices. That means United fans will pay £54, the same amount Liverpool fans paid to see their side draw 3-3 in Sevilla in the group stage..... A commendable performance from the visitors saw them heartbroken as Sergio Aguero nodded home in stoppage time to give City a slender advantage for the return fixture. Bristol had worked very hard to get a draw and the result still leaves the tie very much open. With such displays it is certainly within the realm of possibility that Bristol City will be visiting this stadium as a Premier League equal next season, and a record-breaking 8,000 travelling fans made the trip up north for the clash, making it the largest away following at the Etihad since it opened. In the Carabao Cup, the Robins are looking to reach their first major final since 1909 and City stood in their way in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final, with the side managed by Lee Johnson looking to go back to Ashton Gate with something to cling onto. An away goal and a feeling that they tested the runaway Premier League leaders will spur them on as they try to replicate the feat that saw them knock out Manchester United. Having beaten four Premier League sides so far in the competition, Bristol were a constant threat for the hosts, attacking in numbers and compact in defence. While Manchester City overshadowed possession, the rhythm of the game allowed the Championship outfit to create openings on the break. De Bruyne tried his luck from distance but was twice denied by Fielding, and Bernardo Silva was also granted chances to find the back of the net as he drifted inside from the right flank. Paterson and Bryan attempted to shock the hosts, with the later forcing Claudio Bravo into actionwith a deflected strike from 20 yards.... The 20 year old will join Arsenal for €2.1m and Goal caught up with a journalist who has seen him play regularly in the Greek Super League. Arsenal have completed the signing of PAS Giannina starlet Kostas Mavropanos for a fee in the region of €2.1 million (£1.8m) . The 20 year old defender only made his professional debut in November 2016 but has gone on to become one of Greek football’s most sought-after youngsters. Ahead of the move being completed,Gazzetta.gr journalist Thodoris Vasilis, who gave us the lowdown on Mavropanos and what the deal means for Greek Super League side PAS. Manager Arsene Wenger said following Wednesday's 2-2 draw against Chelsea that Mavropanos was being viewed as a prospect for the future and would likely be sent out on loan. The Greece Under-21 international is the first Arsenal signing since the overhaul of the club's scouting and recruitment department. Head of recruitment Sven Mislintat was brought in from Borussia Dortmund in November, taking over from long-serving chief scout Steve Rowley. Vasilis added: "He’s considered the ‘next big thing’ in terms of Greek defenders after the likes of Panagiotis Retsos (Bayer Leverkusen), Sokratis (Borussia Dortmund) and Manolas (Roma) left Greece for Europe. "Olympiakos was close to signing him in October for €1m. However, it was not an official offer from Olympiakos. They wanted to have the first refusal on the player if he became for sale in January. PAS told them that if they received a better offer from outside they will accept it, which is why he is now heading to Arsenal.".... The Barcelona are preparing a fourth offer for the Liverpool midfielder and are ready to smash the British transfer record to get the deal done this month. The 25 year old wants to seal his dream move to Spain before the transfer window closes and Barcelona are willing to pull out all the stops to make it happen after three failed bids in the summer. But Kop boss Jurgen Klopp has no fears about his players being distracted by the Coutinho circus ahead of tonight’s Merseyside derby. Klopp refused to be drawn on the future of the Brazilian – who will miss the Cup clash with a thigh injury – but insists the team will not lose focus in their FA Cup third round clash against Everton at Anfield. He said: “Sometimes they are in the middle of the story and sometimes they are sat next to the guy in the dressing room who is in the middle of the story. “These young boys are used to this from a really early age and are used to ignoring things around them. If they are smart enough they ignore most of it. “All the stories around are no problem. This story is not around since yesterday. It has been around since the summer and did you at any moment get the impression this team is distracted because of transfer rumours? No. “We are focused on what we have an influence on. All the rest we have to ignore. It is clear there is a lot of excitement around.”.... Read more :https://ochoochosoccer..com.ng/2018/01/transfer-update-barcelona-ready-to.html |
Liverpool have recruited a ‘really high-quality player’ in Virgil van Dijk, according to Roberto Firmino, who is looking forward to playing with, rather than against, the Dutchman. Van Dijk, who finalised his move to Anfield on New Year’s Day, established himself as one of the Premier League’s leading defenders during his two-and-a-half-season spell with Southampton. And, after lining up in opposition to his new teammate on four occasions since joining the Reds in the summer of 2015, Firmino is delighted to now share a dressing room with Van Dijk. “He’s a really, really good defender. It’s always really hard playing against him. It’s very hard, he marks very tightly and I just think he’s a really, really high-quality player,” the Brazil forward said.
