It's not really by doing screening, what if they already have a complimentary list? The screening wasn't done based on State of Origin.

Yes we know but at least allow the kids do the screening and if their names dont come out then fine.

I trust my people.. Even those with red shoes were allowed in. They were happy and we all were happy. That dsnt mean they will have the job but for the moment lets all be happy.

Sports / New Epl Season: 11 Nigerian Youngsters To Watch Out For In The Epl by ochuski(m): 11:13pm On Aug 13, 2021
The English Premier Competition is Nigeria's most popular football league, with fans following their teams with fervor. The big four-Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, and Chelsea-do not currently have any Nigerians in their ranks, but there are certain players-old and young-who are looking to make a statement and silence the critics, while others simply require consistency.

Here is a list of 11 Nigerians compiled by Premium Times that we need to keep an eye on as the Premier League season begins off on Friday, August 13 with Frank Onyeka's Brentford taking on Arsenal, and Folarin Balogun looking to reclaim his place at the top table.

Folarin Balogun (20) - Arsenal.

This Anglo-Nigerian is another Super Eagles talent who was in high demand in Europe when he refused to sign a new Arsenal contract. Balogun, who has been with the club for years, showed flashes of his talent in the Europa League when he appeared five times and scored once while also providing two assists. On the transfer market, he is valued at €4 million.

Frank Onyeka (23) - Brentford.

Onyeka has had a fantastic start with Brentford, scoring in a 2-1 friendly win over Valencia. Last season, the powerful box-to-box midfielder showed off his abilities in the Champions League, helping FC Midtjylland advance to the group stages. In the UEFA Champions League, he appeared in 10 games, scoring once and assisting once. Onyeka has only been capped once by Nigeria, but his efforts for the Bees will help him earn more. On Transfer Market, he's worth €5 million.

Eberechi Eze (23) - Crystal Palace

The Nigeria Football Federation's president, Amaju Pinnick, has not given up on Eze, which is why he is on this list. The midfield dazzler had a good season, providing some outstanding moments of talent. He scored four goals and added six assists in 34 games for the Eagles. He was hurt in May, and there is no timetable for his return to training or playing under Patrick Vieira, the new manager. On the transfer market, he's worth $24 million

Alex Iwobi (25) - Everton

If there is a pivotal season, a make-or-break time for Iwobi, this is it. After seven seasons in the Premier League, the Arsenal youngster has matured into a mature man. Last season, Iwobi struggled to make an impact under Carlo Ancelotti's management, and their relationship devolved into innuendos and rebuttals at one point. He has a second shot under Rafa Benitez, but he can be confident that as soon as his rating drops, he will be a perpetual bench warmer. Iwobi made 30 league games in the 2020/21 season, scoring once and assisting twice. His shot accuracy was a dismal 20%, implying that he will have to put in a lot of work on the practice field to increase his conversion percentage. On the transfer market, he's worth $26 million

Wilfred Ndidi (24) - Leicester City

It's intimidating to watch Ndidi play because he's so good and humble. For the previous three transfer windows, many EPL fans have tipped the defensive midfielder to join one of the big four, but the leggy player begins his sixth season at Leicester, seeking to prove once again that he is good enough for any top-four side in Europe's top five leagues. Ndidi was at the heart of the Foxes' defense and midfield last season, and he played a key role in the club's first-ever FA Cup success. He was outstanding in the season opener against Manchester City last Saturday, as Leicester added the Community Shield to their list of achievements over the last five seasons. With 96 tackles in 26 outings, Ndidi ranks fourth in the EPL. He also had four assists and one goal for a fifth-place finish at the end of the season. On Transfer Market, he is valued at $70 million.

Kelechi Iheanacho (24) - Leicester City

Kels, a senior player, was the focus of all eyes last Saturday when he came off the bench to win a penalty and score to help Leicester City win the Community Shield for the second time. Last season, Iheanacho was his team's leading scorer. The U-17 World Cup winner was on fire from February to May, proving his inclusion. This season, he will have to compete not only with Jamie Vardy for a starting spot but also with the addition of the fast Patson Daka. Will he be able to keep scoring despite his limited playing time, or will Brendan Rodgers eventually put his faith in him to make him the Foxes' first-choice striker? He's worth $24 million according to Transfer Market.

Nathan Tella (22) - Southampton

Another of Pinnick's and his NFF's bright prospects, the 22-year-old all-rounder saw more playing time at the conclusion of the season. He appeared in 18 games as a winger, deep midfielder, and striker, scoring once and assisting once. He is valued at $2.3 million on Transfer Market.

William Troost-Ekong (27) - Watford.

One of the key members of Watford's promotion-winning squad from the Championship, and a dream come true for the Dutch-born defender. The former Udinese defender will have a big role to play if the Hornets are to stay in the EPL. He appeared in 32 games last season and scored one goal. He is valued at $4.7 million on Transfer Market.

Oghenekaro Etebo (25) - Watford.

Etebo's game has slowed, but he now has an opportunity to reclaim the attention of many who were enthralled by his efforts for the Nigerian U-23 squad in the Rio Olympics. He bounced around from Stoke City to Getafe and then Galatasaray before being turned down at the end of last season. He's worth $3.7 million according to Transfer Market.

Isaac Success (25) - Watford

How much longer will Isaac be unable to succeed? In the Championship, the strong, agile, and powerful forward only appeared in 10 games and scored one goal. For the U-17 World Cup winner, this may be a season to remember. As his worth continues to decline, he may not have many more chances at 25. He was worth around $7 million in December 2018, but according to Transfer Market, he is now worth only $2 million.

Emmanuel Dennis (23) - Watford.

Will Dennis be able to settle down at Watford? Will he show off his incredible talent versus Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu in 2019? He scored 0 goals in 18 league appearances last season, first at Club Brugge and then on loan at FC Koln. On Transfer Market, he's worth around $6 million.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel expects club-record acquisition Romelu Lukaku to make a "big influence" at Stamford Bridge, but dismissed claims that his team is suddenly the Premier League title favorites. The Blues reportedly paid £97 million ($135 million) for Lukaku's return to Chelsea on Thursday.

The Belgian will miss Saturday's Premier League start against Crystal Palace, but Tuchel believes the 28-year-old has all of the qualities Tuchel was seeking for in a forward. Lukaku's charisma, speed, and strength, he added, drew the club in.

“We are delighted to welcome Romelu back to the club. We believe he can be a terrific pick for us in terms of personality, pace, and power, he has the body, strength, and expertise, as well as the personality, to make a significant difference for us. He is a humble individual who is also a true team player who loves Chelsea. We received the impression that it was worthwhile to attempt and fight hard, and we are glad he is now our player.” Tuchel said on Friday.

Chelsea was revitalized after Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard in January, climbing from ninth to fourth in the table and winning the Champions League in May, defeating Premier League champions Manchester City in the final. Tuchel, on the other hand, believes Man City and Man United, both of whom have spent over £100 million on transfers, should be considered title favorites.

“When you come forth, you will not be the favorites for the following season; we need to close some gaps. In the last match, we let Liverpool past us, and we have a significant gap to close between Manchester United and Manchester City. When I look at the transfer market and City and United's activity, I don't see why they should be any worse than they were last season. They have improved their squads and are now steady and very powerful teams. I believe we are hungry and contenders for the top 4 first and foremost, and then we will always be hungry to challenge everyone for the best possible outcome,” says the coach.

The news of Lukaku's return has placed more doubt on Tammy Abraham's future at Stamford Bridge. Abraham has been linked with a move to a number of clubs, with Jose Mourinho's Roma among the frontrunners. “We'll see what happens in the days after that, what Tammy's request is, and what the options are,” Tuchel continued. “However, the focus right now is on our Saturday game, and there is no update on his situation.”

Chelsea beat Villarreal in a thrilling penalty shoot-out to win the Uefa Super Cup for the second time in their history after a night of twists and turns in Belfast. As the Blues prepare for their Premier League start against Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, let's take a look at five positives from the encounter.

Chelsea rookie, Chalobah is impressive.

Trevoh Chalobah finished a magnificent pre-season with a man-of-the-match performance, wiping out Villarreal's frontline threats with excellent efficiency and astonishing maturity. “He never lost his cool, stayed calm, and was physically capable of playing 120 minutes,” remarked Thomas Tuchel, who was overjoyed. “It was awe-inspiring. He pushed his way into our heads. Let's see how things proceed. We have a few days to decide on his personal future, but he is already demonstrating his worth to the team.”

The importance of Kante in maintaining a healthy core.

N'Kolo Kante shone in the final three games of their Champions League campaign, as well as in the Super Cup final. Chelsea's dominance weakened once he was taken off, as the midfield struggled under Villarreal's constant pressure. There is a growing conviction that Chelsea's midfield spine isn't strong enough to launch a title challenge, with Billy Gilmour out on loan, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Ross Barkley out of favor, and Ruben Loftus-future Cheek's uncertain. It would be nearly hard to replace one of the best central midfielders in the world, but the £70 million saved by choosing Chalobah over Kounde may be used to fund a more pressing need for a steely presence in midfield if Kante is injured.

Ziyech is getting his bearings.

If pre-season is any indication, Hakim Ziyech, Chelsea's Moroccan magician, has rediscovered how to perform spells. Tuchel's willingness to change his 3-4-2-1 formation to give Ziyech a more daring role between the lines has paid off handsomely. There have been eye-catching through-balls to Timo Werner, a long-range strike that nestled into the bottom corner against Tottenham, and brilliant runs into the box – one of which gained Chelsea's opener last during the Super cup final and another yielded the second in the draw with Tottenham. Despite the tragic setback, there are reasons to believe that Ziyech's return to form and health this season will help the Blues break down stubborn defenses.

Lukaku could be the answer to Chelsea strikers' woes.

The attacking line has continued to perform irregularly, despite the fact that players have yet to attain full match fitness. Marcos Alonso and Callum Hudson-Odoi hit high crosses, Werner chased pointless long balls over the top, and there was a lack of creativity and execution in the final third. It was painfully evident that there was no actual focal point to unite aggressive moves. The addition of Romelu Lukaku couldn't have come at a better moment; his expertise and presence will almost definitely energize Chelsea's attackers, reducing the burden on their young shoulders.

Blues or boost in extra time?

Three days before the start of the new Premier League season, going into extra time was far from ideal, with Chalobah, Kai Havertz, Antonio Rudiger, Mateo Kovacic, and Xabi Alonso all putting in grueling 120-minute shifts. It was unsurprising to see Havertz, who is normally a calm and consistent penalty taker, miss a spot-kick in the shootout. Mason Mount, Jorginho, and Cesar Azpilicueta, who all arrived late from the Euros, needed these extra minutes. Tuchel is having trouble deciding on his starting lineup for the Palace game.

What is your take on Chelsea's current form?

How does one win the Premier League? By avoiding defeat in games. How can you escape relegation from the Premier League? By avoiding defeat in games. When we look at the ten teams that have lost the most Premier League games since the competition began in 1992, bear that in mind. There are two Premier League champions on the list, as well as two teams that are not currently in the top division. Some of England's greatest teams didn't make the cut, but they should be commended for their consistency, as they haven't lost that many games since 1992.

Fulham is ranked 10th with 254 defeats.

After being demoted from the Premier League last season, Fulham is now in the Championship. The Cottagers have played in the Premier League for 15 seasons, but have failed to prevent relegation in some of them. They've lost 20 or more games in the Premier League three times, the most recent being last season. Fulham has lost the most games in a Premier League season (26 in 18/19, when they were relegated in 19th position).

Liverpool is ranked ninth with 259 defeats.

Some may wonder how the Liverpool side that won the Premier League title in 19/20 has lost so many games in the Premier League era. The reason for this is twofold: first, the Reds have appeared in every Premier League season since their inception. There's also the truth that the Anfield side has struggled for consistency, particularly in the early years of the tournament - they've lost 10 or more games in 13 Premier League seasons, and you can't win the league with that record. Liverpool has lost the most games in a Premier League season (16 in 93/94), when they finished eighth in the table.

Manchester City is ranked eighth with 276 defeats.

Modern football fans may be surprised to learn that the current Premier League champions had lost so many games. City struggled for much of the Premier League's early days, similar to Liverpool but worse, having been relegated twice from the top flight. Those days are long gone, yet City did lose 10 games in a Premier League season as recently as 2015/16. That hasn't happened since; the most games lost since then are nine in the 19/20 season. Manchester City has lost the most games in a Premier League season (21 in 2005/06, when they finished 15th).

Sunderland is ranked seventh with 296 defeats.

Sunderland is currently attempting to gain promotion from League One, however, they have previously played in the Premier League. Since the tournament began, the Black Cats have spent 16 seasons in the English top division. Unfortunately, many of those seasons were relegation fights, and Sunderland dropped a lot of points in their fight to stay in the Premier League. On five occasions, they have lost 20 or more games in the Premier League. Sunderland has lost the most games in the Premier League, with 29 in the 2005/06 season, when they finished worst in the league.

Southampton is ranked sixth with 355 defeats.

Southampton is on this list because they have a history of losing games in the Premier League. They've lost at least ten games in every season they've been in the league. With that kind of record, the team has done well to avoid relegation; in fact, they have only been demoted once from the Premier League, and it took them another five seasons to return. They'll want to avoid losing at least 10 games this season, but history suggests that they won't be able to do so. Southampton has lost the most games in a Premier League season (23 in 93/94, when they finished 18th).

Tottenham Hotspur is ranked fifth with 358 defeats.

Tottenham has been in every Premier League season since its inception, so their inclusion on the list is perhaps unsurprising. Although being so high up may surprise some, Spurs have only been at the top end of the Premier League on a consistent basis for the last ten years. Spurs have lost 10 or more games five times in the last ten seasons. They had lost 10 or more games in a Premier League season 15 times prior to that. That's a total of 20 seasons in which the team has lost 10 or more league games. Spurs are ranked sixth because of this. Spurs have lost the most games in a Premier League season (19), first in 93/94 when they finished 15th, and again 10 years later in 03/04 when they finished 14th.

Aston Villa is ranked fourth with 369 defeats.

Aston Villa has a rich history, having won the old European Cup in 1982, but in recent years they have been either at the bottom of the Premier League or outright. That explains why they are losing so many games. Villa has lost 20 or more games in a season four times in the Premier League era, which is one of the main reasons they are on this list. Villa manager Dean Jones will be hoping his club doesn't come close to that figure this season as they aim to improve on their 11th-place result last season. Villa has lost the most games in a Premier League season (27 in 15/16), when they finished last in the league.

Newcastle United is ranked third with 373 defeats.

Newcastle's position on the list can be summed up by the fact that they lost 19 Premier League games for four seasons in a row in the 2010s. The Magpies have continued to lose games since their return to the Premier League, losing at least 16 games in each of the four seasons since their promotion. Manager Steve Bruce will be anxious that the team's losing streak will continue this season. Newcastle has lost 19 games in a Premier League season, first in 2012/13 when they finished 16th, then in 2013/14 when they finished 10th, 14/15 when they finished 15th, and finally in 2015/16 when they finished 18th and were relegated.

Everton is ranked second with 393 defeats.

Everton, like Tottenham, is on this list because of their long tenure in the league - they have appeared in every Premier League season. They have, however, been in relegation trouble more frequently than Spurs, which explains their higher number of defeats. Everton has lost 10 or more league games in 25 of the Premier League's 29 seasons. They have lost so many games in the Premier League because of their consistency, yet they deserve credit for avoiding relegation. Everton has lost the most games in a Premier League season, with 22 in 93/94, when they finished 17th and escaped relegation.

West Ham United is ranked first with 394 defeats.

West Ham is the team to beat, but only by one game, Everton. During the Premier League era, the Hammers have spent time outside the top division and have suffered the greatest losses as a result of some terrible seasons. They've lost more than 20 games in a Premier League season twice and 19 games three times, for example. The good news for West Ham is that things appear to be improving; they only lost 11 games last season, and there's a decent chance that by the conclusion of the season, they won't have lost the most. West Ham has lost the most games in a Premier League season (21 in 2006/07), yet they were not relegated because they finished 15th.

In September 2011, students from Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh University of Economics used 551,232 pieces to create a world record-breaking jigsaw puzzle. The lotus flower puzzle took 1600 kids an entire day to complete, measuring 14.85m by 23.20m and breaking a ten-year-old record. PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino, on the other hand, just has a few pieces – and he doesn't have to use them all - but solving the jigsaw may be just as difficult now that Lionel Messi has arrived in Paris.

1. Galácticos de Paris.

Next week, Mauricio Pochettino will arrive at PSG's Camp des Loges training field on a warm Parisian late summer morning, with Neymar, Kylian Mbappé, Di Maria, and Lionel Messi - not to mention Mauro Icardi, Julian Draxler, and Pablo Sarabia – eagerly awaiting his instructions. Everyone will be looking forward to the start of the game. A simple method to handle such expectations would be to play all four of his major men together in a gung-ho 4-2-4 like Brazil's legendary 1970 World Cup winners, or a somewhat more conservative 4-2-3-1 with Messi, or perhaps Neymar, moving deeper into midfield when needed to advance play.

As exciting (or horrifying, depending on your perspective as a Ligue 1 defender) as that could be, Paris would risk being exposed defensively too readily once that first line of four is broken, with none of Pochettino's Fab Four known for their willingness to cover a full-back. Given Di Mara's advanced years, the idea of him dropping deeper to break from midfield, as he did to such effect with Real Madrid during his final year in Spain, appears to be a non-starter — at least in Champions League and major Ligue 1 games. The ‘Galáctico' alternative, on the other hand, appears likely against lesser Ligue 1 opponents, especially at home, where PSG was near too omnipotent before the fans were removed.

Pochettino's PSG, like his Spurs team, has struggled to break down defensive, bus-parking sides — Lorient exploited such flaws last season in a 3-2 win. Messi's vision, ingenuity, and ability to maneuver in tight places should help him overcome that setback.

2. Di Maria might be dropped.

Di Maria is frequently shamefully ignored, despite being perhaps PSG's most creative and consistent performer over the last two seasons - perhaps reasonably considering the attention Mbappé and Neymar naturally garner. Despite his importance to the squad, the Argentine's playing time is likely to be limited this season, particularly in European games. This is a process that was already begun to some extent last season, with significant restings throughout PSG's final months.

With Di Maria being used seldom and a responsibility to start Mbappé, Neymar, and Messi when they are fit, as well as the fact that Messi logically takes Di Mara's place on the right is a classic 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 set up, a simple swap of the two Argentines would be the most obvious alternative. PSG might keep the same mechanics in place from last season, with the addition of the world's best player on the right side.

This gives PSG the midfield covering of Marco Verratti, Georginio Wijnaldum, and Idrissa Gueye/Leandro Paredes, and effectively relies on their stars' individual talent to win games, as a flat 4-3-3 typically does because it can isolate the three strikers. Although an extremely reductionist assessment, given the identity of Pochettino's forwards, this is a more than solid foundation on which to develop, as Marco Verratti and Achraf Hakimi, in particular, will be important to moving construction and opportunity creation forward.

3. Three in the back.

Given that Marquinhos, Sergio Ramos, and Presnel Kimpembe currently occupy the center-back positions – not to mention the existence and suitability of Abdou Diallo and Thilo Kehrer – Pochettino could be aiming for a 3-4-3 formation for larger Champions League games. Unless Pochettino plans to put Angel Di Maria at left-wing-back, as Thomas Tuchel did at home a few seasons ago, such a pragmatic configuration appears to be somewhat superfluous for most domestic matchups.

Three at the back, on the other hand, would give a more rigorous defensive framework while fostering the counter-attacking game that helped PSG win the Champions League knockout stages against Barcelona and Bayern Munich last season. The fact that Kimpembe (left), Marquinhos (right), and Ramos (center) all fit into such a setup neatly underpins its potential efficacy. However, considering the expected lack of support from forwarding areas, it may leave PSG with only Verratti and Wijnaldum as midfield protection, with the exception of wing-backs Hakimi and Juan Bernat.

This could be an issue against a three-man midfield proficient at holding possession, as England discovered in their Euro 2020 final loss to Italy. In theory, winning the ball back high up the pitch and quickly responding is appealing, but relying on being able to press groups of top midfielders into mistakes is a hazardous strategy, especially when outmanned.

Given the skill levels of Pochettino's first three, Messi's presence would allow for more fluidity and interchangeability in all three of these configurations. With Messi or Neymar, or both, dropping off Mbappé between the lines of opponent midfield and defenses, a flat three might become a triangle.

Mbappé and Neymar could stretch sides on either flank, doubling up with their full-backs to create space in central areas for Messi, Wijnaldum, or even Di Maria, or overloading to hit the by-line and cut back for later runners.

Unlike Antoine Griezmann's ill-advised move to Barcelona, Pochettino's dazzling jigsaw pieces now have clear notional duties — Mbappé in the center, Messi on the right, and Neymar on the left. While putting those puzzle pieces together isn't tough, finding the correct picture may be.

Sports / "You Want To Win" - Says Thomas Tuchel As He Charges Squad Ahead Of Super Cup by ochuski(m): 2:11am On Aug 11, 2021
Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has indicated that his team is excited to face Villarreal on Wednesday in a battle for European glory. Following their 1-0 Champions League final victory over Manchester City in May, the Blues may start the new season with a Super Cup victory over Unai Emery's side. Chelsea is hoping to build on their recent success and challenge on all fronts next season, with a number of prospective incomings set to be unveiled before the transfer market closes on August 31.
"You want to win as soon as you arrive. We must have the fortitude to fight Villarreal head-on. We'll put everything on the line and give it our all on the field. We have no way of knowing what will happen". Chelsea quoted Tuchel as saying.

With less than a week until Chelsea hosts Crystal Palace in their first league match of the season, the west Londoners will put their skills to the test against Villarreal, who won the Europa League on penalties against Manchester United (11-10). Despite the fact that Romelu Lukaku is set to be revealed as a Chelsea player in the next 48 hours, he has not been named in the Blues' squad to go to Belfast ahead of his anticipated move to Stamford Bridge, according to multiple sources.

The German manager has revealed the starting lineup for Wednesday's match against the La Liga side but has remained tight-lipped about Lukaku's impending arrival at Chelsea. Tuchel also gave an update on Tammy Abraham's future at the club, revealing that AS Roma and Arsenal are both interested in signing the 23-year-old midfielder.

"You Want To Win" - Says Thomas Tuchel As He Charges Squad Ahead Of Super Cup Finals

Sports / Review: Check Out Chelsea’s History In Super Cup Finals Till Date by ochuski(m): 2:01am On Aug 11, 2021
When the Blues face Villarreal in Belfast tomorrow, it will be their fifth Super Cup final, so we take a look back at the previous four finals, which span two decades, and how they performed.

Real Madrid 0 Chelsea 1 - 1998

This was Chelsea's first and only successful Super Cup venture. Gianluca Vialli's exciting Chelsea side defeated Real Madrid, managed by Guus Hiddink, in Monaco. Gus Poyet scored the game's sole goal with a well-placed shot from outside the area 10 minutes from time. After winning the League Cup and the Cup Winners' Cup in only six months, it was Chelsea's third trophy in many months, confirming Chelsea's growing stature as a force to be reckoned with both at home and abroad.

Chelsea 1 Atletico Madrid 4 - 2012

It was a completely different scenario 14 years later in Monaco when Atletico Madrid demolished the Blues 4-1. Falcao, a future Chelsea striker, was the star, scoring a hat-trick in the first half. Chelsea received a consolation goal from Gary Cahill on an otherwise unforgettable night.

Bayern Munich 2 Chelsea 2 - 2013 (Bayern won 5-4 on penalties)

Chelsea's Europa League victory against Benfica earned them a spot in the Super Cup final for the second year in a row, this time against Bayern Munich, whom they had beaten in the Champions League final the year before. In 1998 and 2012, Chelsea competed in the first and last single-leg Super Cups hosted in Monaco. Since then, the match has shifted around Europe, with their epic showdown with Bayern Munich taking place in Prague's Eden Arena.

Hazard appeared to have scored the winner in extra time for the 10-man Blues, putting them 2-1 ahead after Fernando Torres and Franck Ribery had traded goals in the first 90 minutes. A last-gasp equalizer, though, forced the Super Cup to go to penalties for the first time, when Romelu Lukaku's saved shot proved crucial.

Liverpool 2 Chelsea 2 - 2019 (Liverpool 5-4 on penalties)

Another tense match, this time in Istanbul, finished with the Blues narrowly losing after a penalty shootout. They took the lead via Olivier Giroud before the European champions took control early in extra-time thanks to a Sadio Mane brace. Chelsea came back to draw level thanks to a Jorginho penalty, and Tammy Abraham's shot was saved after the first nine spot-kicks were scored. Those are the only two Super Cups in which a penalty shootout was used to decide the winner.

Hopefully, Chelsea will come out victorious in today's Super Cup final to add to the already existing trophies they have accumulated under Thomas Tuchel.

Sports / Check Out The 4 Problems Chelsea Must Solve Before Their Game Against Palace by ochuski(m): 9:59pm On Aug 09, 2021
The Blues are swiftly approaching the start of the new season, and there are a few difficulties to be resolved between now and August 14. Thomas Tuchel will continue finalizing his Chelsea roster over the next week in preparation for the Premier League season, which begins this Saturday. It all kicks off on Friday night in west London when new boys Brentford take on Arsenal, and the following day, Chelsea kicks off their projected Premier League title challenge with a home game against Crystal Palace.

Chelsea has had a difficult start to the season. A title cannot be won in the first few weeks of the season, but there is a strong case to be made that it can be lost - Chelsea plays Arsenal, Liverpool, Spurs, and Man City in four of their first six games. Tuchel had 42 players at Cobham for training last week ahead of the Mind Series friendly with Spurs, which they drew 2-2 to end an unbeaten pre-season in which the head coach handed lots of minutes to plenty of players due to his squad's staggering return dates from summer tournaments. The Blues' transfer window has erupted into life, with a club-record deal for Romelu Lukaku poised to be completed shortly, possibly as early as Tuesday, to address Tuchel's squad's gaping goal-scoring problem from the second part of last season.

So, with just five days till Tuchel and the Blues kick off the season, here are four problems Tuchel needs to solve before the season begins?

1. How will the defense be constructed?

All indications point to the German remaining with the five-at-the-back formation he used in the second part of 2020/21, as he did in pre-season. Tuchel's defense has struggled a bit in the preseason due to players returning late. Antonio Rudiger and Kurt Zouma have already played two preseason games, whereas Thiago Silva, Andreas Christensen, and Cesar Azpilicueta have only played one intra-squad game.

With Trevoh Chalobah on loan, Jake Clarke-Salter and Matt Miazga unlikely to be included in the first-team squad, and Malang Sarr presumably unavailable, the third center defender slot is up for grabs.

2. How much time should you give N'Golo Kante?

The dynamic Frenchman was superb for 45 minutes against Spurs in pre-season, continuing his incredible finale to last season, which culminated in a man-of-the-match performance in the Champions League final. Tuchel has gone on the public as saying he must protect his midfielder and, perhaps, his best player, N'Golo Kante, who has had a handful of hamstring ailments in the last six months.

Kante would run all day if he could, so he won't want to be limited in minutes, but Tuchel will argue that he knows better and won't let the Frenchman into what he refers to as "the red zone" when it comes to injury concerns.

3. Who is Lukaku's teammate?

Early this week, the Belgian striker is anticipated to complete his transfer to the club. He won't be arriving at Cobham for his first session chilly, having already been in pre-season training with Inter. It's unclear whether this implies he'll start versus Palace, but there's no reason why he couldn't.

Tuchel will have a huge say in who plays alongside him because the 28-year-old will be the focal point of the Blues attack. In Tuchel's front three systems, Mason Mount and Kai Havertz are the obvious contenders, but Hakim Ziyech has had a fantastic preseason, and there's also Timo Werner, Christian Pulisic, and Tammy Abraham. Tuchel has always had a plethora of attacking options, and with the addition of Lukaku, he now has even more. He'll have to make a huge decision on who will line up alongside the prolific Belgian.

4. When should the latecomers be introduced?

Thiago Silva, Jorginho, Mason Mount, Reece James, Christensen, and Azpilicueta, all late returners, have not played competitively in the preseason. They took part in the intra-squad game at Cobham and will most likely participate in the Super Cup against Villarreal, although only for a few minutes.

Will that be enough for them to start the Premier League opener against Palace?. Tuchel has the last say, but based on this preseason, he's been quite conservative with the number of minutes his first-team players have played. Giving them only 45 minutes against the Eagles before taking them off doesn't seem like the best idea for a Premier League game, especially before a tough run of games ahead, with the Palace game, not exactly a cakewalk.

So, will they start against Palace or will they be benched till the Arsenal match? It's another crucial decision for the head coach to make.

Do you think these problems can affect Chelsea's gameplay if not fixed?

What other problem do you think Chelsea has and needs to be fixed before their next match?

Chelsea's German head coach took over in January and led the club to a European triumph the previous season. There was almost surely a moment on Thomas Tuchel's journey from Paris to London in January when the German thought about what was ahead for him at Chelsea. After a poor run of form, the Blues had recently let go of a club legend in Frank Lampard. They were ninth in the Premier League table, but only a few points off of a place in the Champions League.
Chelsea had set a goal for Tuchel to finish in the top four. And the 47-year-old – who previously managed Borussia Dortmund and started the 2020/21 season at Paris Saint-Germain – did so with a little help from Tottenham Hotspur on the final day of the Premier League season. In the Champions League, however, all expectations were dashed. The Blues advanced to the final after defeating Atletico Madrid, Porto, and Real Madrid. Chelsea met Manchester City in the final, and a goal from Kai Havertz guaranteed Tuchel and his team were crowned European champions.
"I don't know how I started so well," Tuchel said in an interview with UEFA ahead of Wednesday's Super Cup match against Villarreal.
"Previously, I would have said it's never an ideal situation because you come in [midway through the season], but perhaps it was a good thing. Finally, I discovered a well-structured club, a fantastic organization, a very open and ambitious team, and a lot of high-level support, all of which made things very easy for us. [Playing with a back three] was a terrific match for all of our players, especially our midfielders. We decided early on that two of our three midfield players – N'Golo Kante, Jorginho, and Mat – should always be on the pitch," Tuchel explained. "That's the approach: do what's best for the club and what suits the players' personalities."

Tuchel will have another chance to add to Chelsea's trophy cabinet on Wednesday night. The Blues are the clear favorites to beat Villarreal, who won the Europa League last season under Unai Emery. Tuchel will have a difficult time selecting a starting XI with so many players in various phases of pre-season. The Chelsea manager, on the other hand, is adamant that the players he selects will be solely focused on winning another championship.

Tuchel stated, "I have a lot of affection for Villarreal and a lot of respect for Unai Emery. I think the [Europa League] trophy should be renamed the Unai Emery trophy as soon as possible. This man is fantastic. He's played five finals and won it four times - that's insane. They adore this game, and they play it for the love of the ball and with a great deal of genuine bravery. As a result, I believe they will approach this game with the mindset that they have nothing to lose. But what better way to start the season than with a European final; we'll take it very seriously and do everything we can to bring home the next prize."

Chelsea has won the Mind Series trophy, which we will, of course, regarded as another honor for the cabinet. This summer, the Blues took part in a pre-season friendly match with Tottenham and Arsenal, which raised funds and awareness for mental health care. Today, Tottenham defeated Arsenal in the last game, allowing Chelsea to win the competition on goal difference, which only adds to the fun of victory!

Chelsea fans will be saying things like, "One team in London," and "Champions of Mind Series, you'll never sing that," but all jokes aside, even winning a pre-season friendly competition will aid with confidence and momentum ahead of another critical and large season in the Premier League. The Super Cup, which takes place this Wednesday evening, is the next prospective trophy for Chelsea. Despite Chelsea's victory, it is worthy to note that this tournament does not qualify as an official trophy because the games were only warm-ups.

Thomas Tuchel’s Reaction After Chelsea's Friendly Draw Against Tottenham Hotspur

Sports / Chelsea Vs Villarreal Super Cup Final - Several Big Names Left Out Of Squad by ochuski(m): 7:47pm On Aug 07, 2021
Chelsea has named a provisional team of 26 players for their UEFA Super Cup match against Villarreal on Wednesday, although a few notable names are missing. Over 40 players are now participating in the club's pre-season, as Thomas Tuchel previously stated. It is unavoidable that some people will be left out. Chelsea has officially registered 26 players for the Super Cup, but they may still be able to make a few changes before the trip to Belfast.
Twenty-one of those players is on List A, while the remaining five are on List B.
Chelsea can technically have an unlimited number of List B players if they were born on or after January 1, 2000, and have played for the club for at least two years.
Lucas Bergstrom (GK), Ethan Ampadu, Faustino Anjorin, Callum Hudson-Odoi, and Armando Broja are the current five List B players.
Ampadu and Broja, on the other hand, are the only two returning loanees on the list, owing to their eligibility as List B players.
The provisional squad did not include Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Ross Barkley, Davide Zappacosta, or Tiemoue Bakayoko. Trevoh Chalobah, who had a strong pre-season under Tuchel, is another surprise omission.
Chelsea's 26-man squad, according to UEFA's official website:

Goalkeepers:

Kepa Arrizabalaga

Marcus Bettinelli

Edouard Mendy

Lucas Bergstrom

Defenders:

Antonio Rudiger

Marcos Alonso

Andreas Christensen

Thiago Silva

Kurt Zouma

Ethan Ampadu

Ben Chilwell

Reece James

Cesar Azpilicueta

Emerson Palmieri

Midfielders:

Jorginho

N’Golo Kante

Christian Pulisic

Mateo Kovacic

Mason Mount

Callum Hudson-Odoi

Hakim Ziyech

Faustino Anjorin

Kai Havertz

Forwards:

Tammy Abraham

Timo Werner

Armando Broja

Lionel Messi came close to joining Chelsea in 2014, and there are new rumors linking him with a move to Stamford Bridge following his departure from Barcelona. Lionel Messi came close to joining the club in a 'secret agreement ' back in 2014.

Messi, 34, faces a major dilemma after Joan Laporta stated in an impromptu press conference on Friday that keeping the Copa America winner at the club was untenable owing to La Liga's Financial Fair Play criteria. Laporta talked about the club's financial problems and how they relate to the events of the last 24 hours. He went on to describe how the Catalan club's poor financial circumstances influenced their choice to split ways with the athlete who had dedicated 21 years of his life to the cause.

"We decided to get to this stage because of the club's financial predicament and the fact that an expenditure of that magnitude with Leo Messi's contract was dangerous. A lot of things had to be worked out: Leo's contract had to be fair, it had to be for a set period of time because he's the finest player in the world and, of course, he has other offers," Laporta explained.

As the six-time Ballon d'Or winner mulls over his future move, speculation about his next destination grows, with Stamford Bridge being one of the options. In 2014, Messi "secretly" agreed to join Chelsea for £208 million, but the deal fell through after his father and agent Jorge Messi learned of the conversations.

Gianluca Di Marzio of Sky Sports reported that Roman Abramovich and his associates agreed to pay Messi a $65 million (£46.7 million) annual salary plus 70 percent image rights, with the Argentine enthusiastic about the arrangement. It all came crashing down after Messi's father was informed of the intentions by an intermediary who was enraged that he had been left out of the negotiations. When Jose Mourinho began his second spell at Stamford Bridge, these rumored talks took place in private.

Chelsea may be left wondering what could have been, but the fact that they went on to win the Premier League the following season, with Eden Hazard playing a key role in leading the club to more silverware, will provide some solace.

PSG is now leading the battle for the winger, with rumors claiming that the Parisians have already made contact in an attempt to turn Messi, Neymar, and Kylian Mbappe's dream front three into a terrifying reality. Owner Nasser Al-Khelaifi has a "huge ambition" to attract probably the finest footballer in the world to his club, therefore contact between the two sides is expected to increase. Furthermore, the 34-year-old is eager to reunite with close buddy Neymar, after Messi's now-former club was unable to afford to lure the Brazilian back to Spain last summer.

Do you think if given the opportunity to join Chelsea Messi will take it?

Sports / Chelsea Star Havertz Reveals The Special Meaning Behind His Unusual No.29 Shirt by ochuski(m): 5:23pm On Aug 06, 2021
The number on a footballer's shirt might be one of their most recognizable marks, and the Chelsea midfielder reveals why the No.29 shirt is so special to him. In 1928, shirts with numbers were introduced to football to make it easier to identify positions. They have, however, evolved into iconic icons of football heroes past and present, and just seeing the numerals on the shirt may make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. They've been utilized to distinguish between legends - R9 for Cristiano Ronaldo and CR7 for Ronaldo.

They were retired to honor luminaries ranging from Bobby Moore's renowned No.6 at West Ham United to Jude Bellingham's No.22 at Birmingham City. Kai Havertz, the champion of the Champions League-winning goal scorer for Chelsea, has a special number. Despite the fact that No.29 isn't a usual number for star players and club record acquisitions, Havertz revealed why it means so much to him in an interview with The Athletic.

“When I was younger, my brother and I would always play FIFA or Pro Evolution Soccer, we always found a way to stay in the game. My brother wore the number 29 on his shirt all the time. When Leverkusen asked me what number I wanted for the professional game, I asked them which numbers were available and they mentioned 29. I responded I'd accept it because of my brother. It's lucky for me sometimes, and it's not, but I appreciate the number, and I think everyone knows who I am because of it,” Havertz remarked.

Manchester City's entire defense is undoubtedly shivering at the sight of the No.29. After all, it would have been the last thing they saw before the young German raced past their back four like a gazelle and circled Ederson to score the game-winning goal for Chelsea in the Champions League.

The 22-year-one old's moment of brilliance has arguably cemented his status as a Chelsea icon, but the number's former tenant did not have the same fortune. Unfortunately, the Spaniard's fortunes did not improve, and he was shortly loaned to Atletico Madrid. Havertz had similar issues last season, but he finished strong for the Blues.
