A beggar, Binta Umar, yesterday, dragged a fellow beggar, Hajara Kano, to a Sharia Court ll sitting at Magajin Gari, Kaduna over alleged assault and stealing. Umar said she was in court because Kano stole her charity money given to her by a passer-by. She alleged that when she confronted Kano about the matter, she hit her and threw her into the gutter. The complainant prayed the court to grant her justice and punish Kano for what she did. The defendant however was not in court to answer to the charges. The Judge, Musa Sa’ad- Goma, said the defendant had disobeyed the court by not appearing which contravened Section 300 of Penal Code. The judge ordered the immediate arrest of the defendant and adjourned the case until March 19 for further hearing. UFC star Conor McGregor has been arrested in Miami for allegedly smashing a fan’s phone as they tried to take pictures. The Irish fighter is being charged with strong-armed robbery and misdemeanour criminal mischief, police said. The alleged incident took place as the 30-year-old left the Fontainebleau Miami Beach hotel at 05:20 local time. A police report says he knocked the phone out of the fan’s hand, stamped on it then picked it up and left with it. “The victim attempted to take a picture of the defendant with his cell phone. The defendant slapped the victim’s phone out of his hand, causing it to fall to the floor,” a police report said. “The defendant then stomped on the victim’s phone several times, damaging it. The defendant then picked up the victim’s phone and walked away with it, depriving him of it. The defendant was located and arrested.” It added the alleged victim’s phone was valued at $1,000. In a post on social media following his release, McGregor said, “Patience in this world is a virtue I continue to work on. I love my fans dearly. Thank you all.” Source https://punchng.com/mcgregor-arrested-in-miami/ |
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, on Tuesday, arraigned a woman, Jallaba Mala Bukar, before a Maiduguri High Court over a N21.9m investment fraud. Bukar was arraigned on three counts bordering on criminal breach of trust before Justice Abdullahi Sanya of the Borno State High Court sitting in Maiduguri. The EFCC charged the suspect after investigations conducted into three separate petitions against her revealed that sometime in 2017 on different occasions, she allegedly fraudulently influenced one Mohammad Nur Alhaji, Hafsat Muhammad and Ba’ana Modu, who entrusted their money to her for investment in a company called Swithgolden. The victims alleged in their petitions that the money was given to Bukar for investment purposes, but it was instead converted to her personal use and all efforts to recover the money proved abortive. Bukar, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges. The prosecuting counsel, Haruna Abdulkadir, prayed the court for a trial date. Justice Sanya adjourned the matter till April 2, 3 and 4, 2019, for the commencement of trial and ordered that the defendant be remanded in prison custody. The European Union Observation Mission to Nigeria says soldiers barred them from monitoring elections in Rivers State. The observers made the allegation in their preliminary report in Abuja on Monday. Addressing journalists, the Chief Observer, Maria Arena, noted that they came to Nigeria on the invitation of INEC to monitor the elections and make recommendations. Arena, who is a member of the EU Parliament, however, faulted the elections. She said, “Observers, including EU observers, were denied access to collation centres in Rivers, apparently by military personnel. This lack of access for observers compromises transparency and trust in the process. “In Rivers, INEC suspended until further notice the elections due to violence in polling units and collation centres, staff being taken hostage and election materials, including results sheets, seized or destroyed by unauthorised persons. “There is no doubt that the electoral process there was severely compromised.” Arena lamented the violence, underage voting and vote-buying that marred the governorship and House of Assembly elections in some states. She said the EU deployed 73 observers following voting, counting and the collation of results in 22 states. The chief observer said they monitored 223 polling units in 81 collation centres. Arena added, “Although election operations improved, the elections were also marked by an overall low turnout and violence, including against election officials and voters. “However, at eight polling units observed, we saw indications of vote-buying. Eight cases of obvious underage voting were also observed. Our observers saw that the counting of ballots transparent overall. “Positively, in almost all cases, party agents received copies of the result forms, although they were often not displayed. The environment for these elections has been difficult, with cases of violence and intimidation, including attacks on election administration officials.” She stressed the need for electoral reforms in the country, adding that the problems evident in the 2019 electoral process had shown that there was a need for an inclusive national discussion on reforms for greater electoral integrity and participation. Arena also noted misuse of power of incumbency by the governors of the All Progressives Congress and Peoples Democratic a Party on state-owned media houses. She added, “While there can be many reasons for a low turnout, and it is not for me to speculate, it is surely disappointing that overall, only a relatively small portion of what is by far and away Africa’s largest electorate actually cast a vote on both election days. We hope that after these elections, parties and institutions look at what is needed to make voters want to take part in elections.” Also speaking the Deputy Chief Observer, Hannah Roberts, criticised INEC for not providing specific information on the cancellation of votes in the February 23 elections. She said, “While this number did not affect the outcome given the margin of win, this was not a good process. INEC did not provide sufficient information on these cancellations, the specific reasons for them, and the precise local government areas affected. This undermines public confidence in the process.” Source https://punchng.com/soldiers-stopped-us-from-monitoring-rivers-polls-eu-observers/ |
