You may purchase a full subscription to this service through the Jane’s Online Catalogue. Title Defence budget (Nigeria) Section Defence budget Appearing in Sentinel Security Assessment - Central Africa Publication date Apr 14, 2011 Defence spending trends Defence spending has been on the rise in Nigeria as the government pursues a transformation project aimed at improving professionalism within the military and expanding the country's role in international peace operations. Expenditure on the acquisition of new equipment and the refurbishment of older inventory has risen as the government comes under increasing pressure to enhance its defence capabilities by the international community in terms of both improving capacity for international and regional peace operations, and to provide greater security for international oil interests in the Gulf of Guinea. Budgetary allocations for the army, navy and air force reflect the new emphasis on improving training, living and working conditions of members of all three forces, especially the army. The far greater allocation to the army reflects not only the country's overwhelming reliance on the army for both internal and international deployments, but also the targeting of the army for professionalisation due to it being historically highly politicised. The army is likewise facing an ongoing domestic deployment to the oil-rich Niger Delta, in the south of the country, due to persistent insecurity in the region.Under military rule, actual Nigerian defence expenditure tended to outstrip allocations due to supplementary allocations. Under civilian rule, governments have not necessarily been able to deliver on budgetary allocations.Of the total NGN311 billion defence spending allocation in the 2011 budget, NGN111.5 billion is allocated to the army, NGN84.6 billion to the air force and NGN59 billion to the navy.Professionalism |

Nigeria's president sets out anti-terror plans Tue Jan 4, 2011 5:26am GMT Print | Single Page[-] Text [+] By Felix Onuah ABUJA (Reuters) - Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan announced a series of anti-terrorism initiatives on Monday as he looks to regain control after a wave of attacks in the last week of 2010 rocked Africa's most populous nation. Jonathan is preparing to contest in ruling party primaries next week that are likely to be the most fiercely contested since the end of military rule more than a decade ago. A bombing in Nigeria's capital Abuja on New Year's Eve killed four people, a week after 80 were killed in a series of blasts and subsequent violence in the central city of Jos. Religious clashes in the northeast have killed more than a dozen with police pointing the finger at an Islamist sect that claimed responsibility for the Abuja blast. Jonathan will be hoping his show of intent on Monday will help boost confidence in his leadership credentials as rivals look to seize on any signs of weakness. "Mr President in the next one week is to appoint a special adviser on terrorism," presidential spokesman Ima Niboro said after an emergency meeting of Nigeria's security council. "Mr President is going to work with the National Assembly to ensure the speedy passage of the anti-terrorism bill that is before the assembly." Niboro said the government would also tighten up security by setting up CCTV cameras in busy areas and |
Just incase you do not know, EVERYTHING in Nigeria is directly or indirectly affected by ethnicity and/or religion. Go figureso cos your eyes hurts u pluck it out, right? thank GOD for blessing the country with WHITEHORSE. last i checked there are probs all over the world with diff. undertones. but they find ways todeal with it or else the aggrieved will take up arms as witnessed in parts of midd/east, east Africa etc. learn to deal with your problems. yeah right, its ethnic/ religion. deal with it and lets us stop winning. damn. we do not have any working institutions in the country to deal with anything, security, education, transportation ,etc. u hear Methuselah. |
lot of you guys are being really silly!SHaarrraaaap there silly boyo so this is now an ethnic fight, oh no, its religious, muslim against xtian. when will government give us institutions that works, when are we going to have a government in place that knows how to govern, abeg leave yar a dua out of this, or is he still @ as.s. hole rock. |

@ violent, i hear you. the point amosun need to be aware of are that asset must equal/surpass liabilities or else trouble in the house. y borrow to pay wages/salaries, how long to audit the state acct, don't see any reason to appoint unnecessary comm. post/p.a if state is broke. cut down on useless and unnecessary payments to council of chiefs, obas, and advisers. in fact whats the point of free education in a broke state? the governor should hit the ground running and not moaning. |
i am beginning to wonder weda these so called messiah , amosun, aregbesola, ajimobi, were all prepare to push thru the req, developments ppl are yearning for, or is it going to be all promises without concrete plans on the ground. |
in the land of the blind even one with only 1/4 vision becomes king. no be so. |
