A Nigerian UN peacekeeper infected with Ebola in Liberia arrived Saturday for treatment in The Netherlands, Dutch authorities said. The first Ebola patient to be treated in The Netherlands was flown to the country in a specially equipped plane and was to be taken straight to the university hospital in Utrecht, in the centre of the country. “After Germany, France and Switzerland , it is The Netherlands’ turn to make a contribution by welcoming an employee of an international organisation,” the Dutch health and development ministers said in a letter to parliament. The patient had been enlisted in the fight against Ebola, which has killed more than 6,000 people and infected around 17,000, almost all in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. http://www.nigerianeye.com/2014/12/nigerian-peacekeeper-brought-to.html?m=1 |

A Nigerian-born U.S. Army Captain, Sunday Adebomi, on Sunday said that war against Boko Haram could be won if President Goodluck Jonathan set aside his gentility. Adebomi said in Ado-Ekiti that the war could be won if the Federal Government was determined to introduce a hard stand. “There are several ways of wiping out the sect and end the killings. If government is determined to end Boko Haram today it will be achieved. “Who are those in the sect that dare face the government? But unfortunately, I suspect there are some bigwigs behind these people. “Mr President is being too gentle in his handling of the killings; but unfortunately, it is daily assuming dangerous dimension; gentility cannot win the war. “Although gentility is not a crime but Mr President will have to be more aggressive because this is a security threat to the entire nation. “Mr President will have to take a stand on the matter either to continue to tolerate the sect and leave Nigerians to be mourning every day with the several killings. “Mr President should give a matching order to the military to wipe them off once and for all. “Not until a strong stand is taken Nigerians may not be able to sleep with their eyes closed,” he said. Adebomi said the military had been doing a good job in the affected states but “they are fighting unknown faces and faceless groups. “Government will have to first identify the cause of the problem, the root, sponsors, as well as where and how these insurgents get their weapons. “The security agencies do not also understand the terrain they are fighting the war because most of them are alien to the battle fields. “They know nothing about the sect, how then will they fight such war and think they will win; it is difficult.” The U.S. captain said he led over 5,000 U.S. soldiers to war during the Pre-Mobilisation in 2010 and expressed optimism that the sect could be wiped out. He said that the sect meant nothing to the Nigeria security agencies if genuine commitment was there adding, “all they need is the Presidential directive.” He appealed to President Jonathan to read the riot act to the governors of the affected states or be made to face the wrath of the Federal government. Adebomi said that the President could also compel the governors in the states to account for each soul lost to the insurgents. “What am simply saying is that the matter deserves an aggressive reaction; enough of a gentleman approach, because you don’t dialogue with faceless groups,” he said. “The question we need to ask ourselves is: “When will enough be enough? I woke up this morning with this thought in my mind asking Nigerians when enough will be enough. “I ask the President when enough will be enough. I ask members of the Senate and House of Representatives when enough will be enough. “Is it not time the government declared full state of emergency in the affected region? “Since this insurgency, what concrete intelligence step has the government taken apart from fire for fire exposing ill equipped military men and women to excessive fire power of Boko Haram. “Let us ask, when will enough be enough? Nigeria is dripping blood on daily basis; it is time the government woke up to its task.” Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states have been under the attack of the Boko Haram insurgents, loosing several lives and property. Adebomi hails from Ise-Ekiti in Ise/Orun local government area of Ekiti and had been in the U.S. Army for almost two decades. Nigerian Army on Saturday released another 125 persons arrested for allegedly having links with the fundamentalist Boko Haram sect. This development follows an earlier release of 42 persons who were investigated and found to be having no link with the fundamentalist group. It can be recalled that NigerianEye earlier reported that 42 persons were released on Thursday to Governor Kashim Shettima. Spokesman of the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maiduguri, Col. Sani Usman, while handing over the new set of 125 persons to Gov. Kashim Shettima, informed that 254 persons were intercepted fleeing from the state after attack on Boko Haram strongholds on September 23 in Biu. He added that after proper investigation, the 125 men have been cleared of any involvement in Boko Haram activities. He, however, disclosed that those who have been investigated and found wanting would be prosecuted in the court of law. “These cleared suspects being presented to you were, however, cleared by the military after a thorough investigations by the military of any alleged involvement or participation in terrorists activities in the recent attacks and killings experienced in Southern Borno state,” Col. Usman said. In his response, Gov. Shettima said that the action of the military will build trust between the army and the civil populace. “It shows that the military are core professionals and know how to go about their duties. This will go a long way in building trust across the local people and the military,” Shettima said. He lauded the military for taking good care of the freed suspects, saying they look well treated and they do not show any sign of torture. He advised those released to put behind any feeling of revenge, while calling on them to contribute their quota to nation building especially the return of peace. “Now that you have been absolved from any terror activity by the military, each and every one of you here in this Government House Hall, to exhibit good behaviour in your respective towns and villages; and should also assist the military by giving useful information on how to end this insurgency that has been with us for over five years. “Islam does not condone the killings and destruction of people’s property. What is important is that all of you should go home and assist your parents, because most of you are youths that could transform this state into a better place to live in,” Shettima advised. http://www.nigerianeye.com/2014/11/army-releases-125-boko-haram-suspects.html?m=1 |
The Assemblies of God Church has announced the excommunication of its past General Superintendent, Rev. Paul Emeka, from the church But reacting to the development, Emeka revealed that the action was a “coup.” While announcing the removal of its spiritual leader’s dismissal from the ministry with his pastoral certificate withdrawn, the church also announced the emergence of Rev. Chidi Okoroafor as the new General Superintendent of the church. He was elected alongside three other principal officials and fifteen zonal representatives to form the new Executive Council of the church for the next four years. The decisions were part of the resolutions reached by over 7,000 delegates of the church at the General Council meeting at its Evangel Camp, Okpoko in Ebonyi State. At the council meeting, held every four years, the delegates reportedly decided on the excommunication after concluding that the ex-spiritual leader “had dragged the name of the church in the mud by instituting legal suits and using law enforcement agencies to witch-hunt some of their leaders.” According to the Legal Adviser of the church, Barrister Abuka, the dismissal of Emeka was necessary and had paved the way to institute litigation against the former general superintendent, who was alleged to be “making moves with some members to take over the church.” The church also claimed he was working with other alleged collaborators believed to be working at cross-purposes with the church’s leadership. Commenting on the crisis rocking the church, Okoroafor said the measures were necessary to remove those whom he described as “dissidents bent on frustrating progress” in the church. He confirmed that legal actions would be taken against Emeka and others seeking to take over the church through lawsuits. Justifying the reasons for this, the new general superintendent said, “We cannot spiritualise legal issues. You can’t just be praying when somebody is taking you to courts. We would no long keep quiet and allow our property taken over or our accounts fraudulently run by them.” He pointed out that the church had identified constitutional loopholes that Emeka and other capitalised on, stating that such sections would be properly addressed when an emergency council meeting holds next year. However, the excommunicated general superintendent stated that he stood for reconciliation. According to him, the church has been embroiled in some crises in which a former Governor of Ebonyi State, Sam Egwu and the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria intervened in the matter. Emeka said, “By announcing my excommunication from the church, they are trying to instill fear into people so that they can distance themselves from me. I stand for reconciliation. I have committed no offence. “But, some people in the church organised an illegal election to remove me by force from office. They would not allow me to complete my four-year tenure in office which started in 2010. They are even threatening my life. I have petitioned the Inspector- General of Police on that.” www.nigerianeye.com/2014/11/assemblies-of-god-church-sacks-general.html?m=1

The worsening state of insecurity in the country reared its ugly head in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, following the abduction of the immediate past President of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Okey Wali. The unfortunate incident was disclosed by the NBA in a press statement Saturday, signed by its current president, Mr. Augustine Alegeh (SAN). The umbrella body for Nigerian lawyers said it received the “shocking news” of Mr. Wali’s kidnap by unknown persons on Saturday, October 11, at about 9 p.m. Mr. Wali, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and an indigene of Rivers State, was elected the NBA’s 26 th president in 2012 and served in that capacity until July this year. “Okey Wali SAN is a man of peace who has not only contributed immensely to the enthronement of rule of law and protection of human rights, but also to the development of our Nation”, the NBA said. “It is therefore saddening that he should become a kidnap victim. This sad event is yet another reminder of the state of insecurity in which all Nigerians live. “The NBA calls on the Federal Government to step up efforts to fulfil its primary constitutional role of providing for the welfare and security of all Nigerians. We passionately appeal to his abductors for his immediate and safe release to his family”. http://www.informationng.com/2014/10/immediate-past-nba-president-okey-wali-kidnapped.html |
