PoliticsRe: PDP Convention: Don't Underestimate The Yorubas - FFK Warns by OduduaDefender(m): 11:00pm On Dec 10, 2017
I see this PDP convention degenerating into a tribal crisis within the party. The stalwarts of the party from the SW are making it look like there's a gang up against the region by the SS/SE. If it 'is not well managed, the well entrenched media machinery of the SW will 'be deployed against the party by the political elites across political divides in the region leading to its destruction. In Nigerian politics, you don't belittle the SW.

And by the way, APC is a no no for me.
PoliticsAnambra Election: Why I Lost – Chidoka by OduduaDefender(op): 9:23pm On Nov 19, 2017
Chief Osita Chidoka, United Progressive Party (UPP) governorship candidate, has accepted defeat even before INEC’s final declaration of the winner.

Chidoka, the former Minister of Aviation, accepted the defeat in a statement entitled “Politics Anambra election: Why I lost polls” in Awka on Sunday.

“I have accepted defeat in the Anambra governorship election even as result is still being announced by the INEC,” he said.

Chidoka said that he lost because he would not play the usual money politics.

“Our campaign attracted the finest and brightest of Anambra.

“The bold and the courageous were with us as we exerted our best in running the most robust issue-based and technology-driven campaign in the history of our dear state.

‘We attempted to change the course of events and chart a new beginning for our state.

“We believed and we dared; we engaged with all patriotic vigour as we held strongly that the long awaited time for our people to experience a new opportunity had come and we laboured for it.

“In all, our focus was the people; the forgotten, the poor and the disadvantaged.

“They were the prime impetus for our involvement. We beheld their agony and we strived to redirect and vent that energy through a genuine political process.”

He said the UPP heard the complaints of the people and worked to redirect them from the streets to the ballot box.

Chidoka said he rejected god-fatherism and money politics and made personal sacrifices with small donations and goodwill of a few good men and women.

He said his campaign remained issues-based, adding that he did not attack anybody before, during and after the campaigns.

“But from the ballots, we heard the voice of our people. We heard it loud and clear.

“On November 18 our people announced strongly their rejection of politicians.

“They traded their votes because they doubted we would truly represent their interest.

“While our message resonated with the people they doubted that the political class cared about them. They voted for the highest bidder.”

Chidoka said that as at Thursday, a large percentage of his supporters insisted that they would not vote unless he brought money.

According to him, “I insisted we will not pay for votes. The decision not to pay ended our good run.

“We accept the voters’ decision. We also heard our people by their turnout and transactional approach.

“In all, we hold our heads high; high because we did not lose the poll due to paucity of ideas or lack of “structure”.

“We lost to superior financial firepower. As Democrats, we concede to the voters’ choices.

“The true hallmark of democracy is the respect for the voice of the ballot as that of the majority,” Chidoka said.

PoliticsRadio Biafra Removes Nnamdi Kanu As Boss by OduduaDefender(op): 9:56am On Nov 14, 2017
Pirate Radio has announced the sack of Nnamdi Kanu as its director.

It all started on Sunday morning when again the radio hit the airwaves between 6am and 7am.

But instead of the fiery rhetoric with which it was associated with, the radio announced Kanu’s sack.

The Radio Biafra’s programme started with a lady announcer, who gave her name as Ifeoma Okorafor, stating that the radio was back on air.

Then came the announcement that “Mazi Nnamdi Nwanekaenyi Kanu, the former Director of Radio Biafra is hereby dismissed and removed as Director of Radio Biafra following extensive and intensive consultations”.

The announcer named one “Mazi Ezenwachukwu Sampson Okwudili as Kanu’s replacement”.

The announcer reeled out reasons why Kanu was removed as including:

“Personalisation of the Biafran struggle and derailing from the core objectives of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as a grassroots movement.

“Kanu’s actions and his decisions to incite members of IPOB towards violence leading to the death of many innocent young people in Onitsha, Aba and Umuahia is totally unacceptable and grossly irresponsible.

“Kanu privately collected £14 million and another $22 million to purchase landed properties abroad in his name and that of his father, Igwe Israel Kanu, in a clear case of ‘monkey dey work baboon dey chop’.

PoliticsDid Tinubu Also Just Wake Up From His Sleep? by OduduaDefender(op): 12:02pm On Sep 30, 2017
Less than 18 months to the 2019 elections , some politicians who were once opposed to or quiet on restructuring have started making a U- turn, an action that political pundits have tagged as hypocrisy. JESUSEGUN ALAGBE writes In his 1968 book , The People ’s Republic, foremost Nigeria ’s nationalist and statesman, Chief Obafemi Awolowo [1909- 1987 ], spoke of selfish African leaders who were used to employing deceit to swindle the citizens . He said , “ Africa has produced more self- seeking leaders than public- spirited ones . But , thank goodness, the masses of the people remain largely unspoilt and uncorrupted, and are developing fast the technique of differentiating gold from lead and real metal from dross . “ What is more , they have begun to show their preparedness for very rough action against any political leader who may be caught in the game of public trickery and fraud . ” Forty - nine years after the late sage wrote those words, political pundits, however; still believe the political class in Nigeria has not relented in its attempt in making use of public trickery and fraud , particularly when they need the people’ s votes during elections. According to political analysts , the U- turn some politicians have made in the past few days on the topic of restructuring has suggested that because they know it is what most Nigerians are clamouring for, they (politicians) are now using it as a bait to endear the people to themselves now that the 2019 elections are gradually approaching . In May 2016, it was former Vice - President Atiku Abubakar , who perhaps first started making the call for Nigeria’ s restructuring, stating that it held the key to resolving agitations fuelled by feelings of marginalisation across the country . He had explained that Nigeria , as it was structured , was not working, and as such , it was necessary to take a second look at the structure with a view to reforming it into a workable entity. Since making the call, it has spread like wildfire, with several other prominent Nigerians , religious and ethnic groups backing the former Vice- President and lending their support to the restructuring call. However , as correct as Atiku might be on the need to restructure Nigeria, political pundits believe it was just like a big bait by an “ experienced politician ” who has his eyes on the 2019 presidential election. Meanwhile, whether the former Vice- President’ s intentions are genuine or not , several people have called on the President Muhammadu Buhari- led administration to listen to the people’s call for restructuring , which happens to feature in the party’s manifesto . Some have also called for the implementation of the report of the 2014 National Conference , convened by former President Goodluck Jonathan, believing that it could address major issues affecting the country , including revenue allocation , resource control and insecurity. However , President Buhari has not budged an inch. Rather , he has insinuated that rather than restructuring , it is the fight against corruption and insecurity that are on his agenda . Perhaps more surprising to some Nigerians was the quietness of the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu , on the restructuring subject , particularly because he was its foremost proponent while he was at the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria. Nevertheless , in the twinkling of an eye , the former Lagos State governor came out of his shell last Sunday , stating that restructuring would bring the much needed balance to the country . He had said , “ We may be defined by political borders and boundaries but we have not glued ourselves to collective purpose and vision . Too many of us are born in Nigeria but not of it. Thus, our society is not a collective enterprise as important to each of us as our own personal endeavour . It is a platform, an arena, to claim whatever one can by whatever means available . “ It would be better to restructure things to attain the correct balance between our collective purpose on [the ] one hand and our separate grass roots realities on the other . We must listen to what is being said so that we can determine what is really meant . ” More surprisingly , barely 24 hours after the call by Tinubu , a born - again advocate of restructuring, two northern groups , the Arewa Consultative Forum and the Northern Elders ’ Forum, known for their diehard positions on restructuring, retreated . While the NEF said the North was now open to dialogue , the ACF said it would respect Nigerians ’ views on a structure of government that would strengthen the unity and peaceful coexistence of Nigerians for equitable development . Even though political observers said the U- turn of the political class on restructuring was a welcome development , they cautioned that it might be a ploy by them to garner votes in the upcoming elections. Lagos- based lawyer and political commentator , Mr. Adebayo Osho, advised the citizens on trusting politicians on the new recent calls for restructuring. He said it was time the people were able to distinguish between genuine and mere political statements . He said , “ Now that we are seeing a wave of pro- restructuring statements by those who once despised it, I think we have to be very careful not to allow these politicians swindle us again . I believe they are using it as bait to obtain our favour again . What they are saying is correct , but we must beware of hypocrisy . They are hypocrites . “ I believe it’s because they know 2019 is fast approaching ; they are trying to make us vote for them . It ’s not that they didn’ t know that’s what the country needs , they knew all along , but they just didn ’t want to do it because it wouldn ’t favour them . “ My only advice is that people should be wary of promises with no genuineness by the political class. Anybody can say anything , but will they do it? Restructuring is truly important and we need it, but we must not allow some politicians to think we are fools. ” Also in her opinion , the Executive Director of Abuja- based Social Justice for Women , Mrs . Janet Olukokun , said the U- turn of the political elite on restructuring could be another act of trickery . She also cautioned the people not to trust “ mere words” by politicians who have no genuine intention to serve the country . She said , “ I am of the opinion that the new calls are not genuine. Could it be that they are just realising that Nigeria needs to restructure ? Why didn’ t groups like the NEF and ACF talk to their son [President Buhari ] to do what the people want all along? Are they just waking up from their sleep ? “ Did Tinubu also just wake up from his sleep ? Being a national leader of his party, he could have been voicing out, reminding the President all along that since they promised Nigerians restructuring in the first place, they should have acted on it. But I think his new statement is hypocritical. “ As for me , I think it’ s too late to trust their genuineness ; of course , we all know that now that 2019 is approaching , they would be scheming , looking for how they could get the people’s votes. They know we want restructuring , so they could be thinking , ‘These people want this, let us tell them we will give them what they want . ’ “ Meanwhile, it is the citizens who should be more careful . By now , we should be able to judge between a politician who is self - seeking and one who is not . It is not in words we should believe in our politicians, it is by their actions . ” London- based public policy analyst and social commentator , Mr. Joseph Bamidele, also told our correspondent via LinkedIn that the U- turn of the political class on restructuring should be taken with a pinch of salt. He said it was suspicious that they were now speaking in favour of restructuring when they could have done so a long time ago . He said , “ We should be suspicious; even President Buhari had been reluctant to do anything about calls for restructuring until recently when his party said it had set up a panel to look into it. I asked myself when they did so , ‘Is restructuring a party’s affairs or a Nigerian affair ?’ Why did they need to set up a panel on something they promised in their manifesto ? Isn ’t that ridiculous? “ They know they get away with all these things and that’s why they do them . Look at the Peoples Democratic Party also talking about restructuring . Is it now they all realised Nigeria needs it? What were they doing while they were in government for 16 good years ? When former President Goodluck Jonathan conducted the National Conference , why didn’t he at least try to implement part of the report before leaving office ? “ Look , everything is a game of deceit . Our politicians are deceitful , they are not sincere . Every one of them says what he thinks the people want to hear , and because most of us are also easily bamboozled , we take every of their words hook , line , and sinker . I think we should be more careful this time around. Let them do what the people want first and we will believe them . ” In an interview with our correspondent , a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Robert Clarke, also asked the citizens to be wary of the political class , stating that they were the greatest enemies of the country . He said , “ The English man says politics is an art of deceit . The better you can deceive , the better a politician you are . As far as I am concerned , I don ’t believe in politicians. They are one of the greatest enemies this country has , but they are a necessary evil. “ A generality of them are deceitful . My advice is that we should have a system of governance that will not give much powers to these politicians, power should reside with the people and the only way out is to write out a new constitution where the instruments of true democracy are well entrenched . ”

Nairaland GeneralKeyamo Speaks On The P-square Feud by OduduaDefender(op): 6:15pm On Sep 26, 2017
Since the news of bad blood between the Okoye brothers hit social media,
rumors have been circulating like wildfire. Many media outlets have been
speculating about the real reason the brothers dissolved their group P-Square.
Some have pointed to greed and money. While others have placed the blame on
the brothers’ wives interfering and causing a rift between them. Others are
speculating that the eldest brother and manager, Jude Okoye, is responsible for
the rift amongst the brothers.
The group’s attorney, Festus Keyamo (SAN), issued a press statement on the
group’s split and the brothers’ ongoing feud after a video surfaced from Linda
Ikeji’s Blog showing the brothers engaging in a physical altercation.
PSquare's Peter, Paul &Jude Okoye nearly fight each other at their lawyers
office
“Firstly, while it is obvious that none of these materials were released from our
Chambers, we are thoroughly saddened and embarrassed by these
developments. As their close friends and lawyers over many years, we have
done our very best to manage their differences over time and very prominent
personalities have been invited in the past to intervene,” the statement said.
“We are well aware that we have a duty to keep the details of their
disagreements confidential, so we shall say nothing here on the issues at stake.
But since the disagreement is now in the public domain, and our name has been
dragged into the fray, we wish to appeal to members of the public to refrain
from jumping into uninformed conclusions about this feud.”
Mr. Keyamo says he is hopeful that the brothers will reconcile their differences
and P Square will reconvene.
Read the full press statement below.
PRESS STATEMENT BY FESTUS KEYAMO, SAN, ON THE PUBLIC FEUD BY THE
PSQUARE BROTHERS
Our attention has been drawn to the on-going feud between the P Square
brothers in online, print and electronic media. We have also been inundated with
calls from the media to authenticate the correspondence Peter Okoye sent to
our office, indicating his intention to terminate the contract between the
brothers for various reasons and the online video showing a purported scuffle
between the brothers in our Chambers.
Firstly, while it is obvious that none of these materials were released from our
Chambers, we are thoroughly saddened and embarrassed by these
developments. As their close friends and lawyers over many years, we have
done our very best to manage their differences over time and very prominent
personalities have been invited in the past to intervene.
We are well aware that we have a duty to keep the details of their
disagreements confidential, so we shall say nothing here on the issues at stake.
But since the disagreement is now in the public domain, and our name has been
dragged into the fray, we wish to appeal to members of the public to refrain
from jumping into uninformed conclusions about this feud.
None of these talented brothers are at fault. None of them is also wholly
justified and correct in their individual positions. We also wish to state
categorically that, contrary to widely held opinions, none of their wives are at
fault. In fact, the wives have kept their respectable and dignified distances from
all the issues involved. THEY HAVE NEVER INTERFERED in any way.
We also want to state that whilst all the three brothers may have genuine
grievances, nobody’s life is at risk. All the various incidents that happened in
our Chambers (some as late at 12 midnight and 2 am and one of which was
captured in the online video) arose out of various meetings that were genuine
attempts at resolving their differences. Whatever was said by all of them that
were provocative were done in the heat of passion, emotion, and anger. In fact,
the incident in the video circulating online happened sometime around
May 2016. After all those arguments, we all still sat down and signed
agreements and we were all happy.
So, we appeal to everyone to please grant the Okoye family the privacy, prayers,
and support that they need at these trying times. I have also appealed to all of
them not to grant further interviews at this point so as not to escalate the
issues further. Whatever is going on is the usual siblings’ rivalry experienced in
most families. It is nothing unusual.
We are of the strong opinion that the brothers would eventually put away their
differences and come back stronger.
Thank you.
Yours most trusted,
FESTUS KEYAMO, SAN, FCIArb (UK)
Head of Chambers

RomanceBuild A Real Relationship If You Want A Real Marriage by OduduaDefender(op): 6:57pm On Sep 05, 2017
Build a real relationship if you want a real marriage!
The strength of a building is determined by its foundation.
Don't just follow the trend, follow your strength.
It's okay to capture your proposal and do pre-wedding shots... It is okay to
add colour to love and make it presentable but it is absolutely shameful if you
do this without true commitment as the foundation of your union.
This is exactly why we see 'ugly marriages' after 'beautiful courtships, beautiful
pre-wedding shots and beautiful weddings'.
Do not join everyone who is falling for a 'make believe' system - a system
where everything is made up for the viewing pleasure of outsiders and social
media. Make it real! Run away from a courting and wedding set-up that is a
mere acting of a social script! Be an ardent believer and practitioner of what is
honest, true and sincerely committed and not what is socially endorsed.
Value what you do towards getting married. Mean it and let commitment be
your underlying motivation.
As you will soon realise, the true validation of pre-wedding shots is the beauty
of post-wedding shots. Proposals don't define life and their pleasures soon fade
away if the marriage fails to ratify its excitement. Life is a lot more than the
goose bumps that likes and comments on pictures and profiles generate at that

PoliticsPresident Buhari Is Deceived: Nigeria's Unity Is Very Negotiable by OduduaDefender(op): 8:11pm On Aug 21, 2017
I woke up very early this morning eager to listen to the much publicised President Buhari's address to the nation, but little did I know that was what would wreck my whole day. As the President's address started, I was keenly following until I heard that statement I detest and abhor and hate to hear: "NIGERIA'S UNITY IS NOT NEGOTIABLE". What is not negotiable?? What is settled?? By who and who?? Is Nigeria the nations
conquered by the Northerners and now enslaving the Southerners?? Whether
these people likes it or not, our unity, if there was even any in the first place is
VERY NEGOTIABLE. There is no sense in uniting by force. In fact, until we discus
whether or not we want to be united as a country and under what conditions....T
here can never be a UNITED NIGERIA, peace or development in the land. Nigeria
should be for everybody not some group of people. Not only for the elites, not
only for the politicians, presidency, legislators, not only for the religion leaders,
not only for royal fathers, Emirs, Obas because these are the people that are
benefiting from the suffering of the masses.
There is no doubt that Nigeria's problems were created in the past but I'm
always disappointed hearing the statement that "Nigeria's unity is not
negotiable.
There is no unity without fairness and justice. Nigeria and Social government
are not fair to the masses! Moreover it's inhuman and unthinkable that leaders
use the word not negotiable for a country made of different nations and tribes
that were amalgamated (forced) together by colonialists.! A forced marriage
won't have peace and won't last and it will scatter sooner or later by force and
violence if you insist it's not negotiable
To quote the words of renowned Nobel prize laureate Professor Wole Soyinka
"the unity of any geographical entity is more than negotiable". What's not
negotiable? is people's right to self determination not negotiable? Is people
right to their resource control not negotiable? Is equality in the land not
negotiable? You do not tell people not to secede and go their separate ways,
give them reasons to stay with you and they will fight with their lives to be with
you rather than fight to go away. Nigeria has no option than to oblige. Simply
put, forced unity is slavery in itself that's why Nigeria strength militarily is
located in the North.
Sovereignty belongs to the people, Nigeria remains as negotiable as untied,
unsigned and overt document. You can not force people together forever and
the early we negotiate the better for all of us. Restructure now and renegotiate
the existence or face the organized violence everywhere in the land sooner or
later.
So, President Muhammadu Buhari must know this, it must be drummed into his ear: Nigeria's unity is not only negotiable, but it will certainly be negotiated sooner or later.
THANKS.
PoliticsNiger-delta Not Part Of Biafra: Ijaw Youth Council by OduduaDefender(op): 7:27pm On Aug 14, 2017
Ijaw Youth Council Dissociates Itself From Biafra
Agitators:

The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), on Monday, warned pro-Biafra groups such the
Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and
the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to desist from including Ijaw territories in
the map of Biafra, stressing that the Ijaw ethnic nationality never consented to
be a part of Biafra.
Dismissing claims credited to pro-Biafra organizations that the Ijaw nation is
part of Biafra, the IYC, in a statement signed by its spokesman, Daniel
Dasimaka, said the Ijaw people have never been Biafrans.
The IYC said that the old eastern region of Nigeria was a political contraption
that enslaved the Ijaw people, adding that it was created by those who also
orchestrated "this miscarriage of a state called Nigeria."
The group noted that the Ijaws are not in any way against the genuine
aspirations of all peoples, including the MASSOB and IPOB, to attain self-
determination or secession, but they should not drag the Ijaw ethnic nationality
into their geographical expressions.
“Ijaws are a distinct ethnic nation that has existed before the 1914
amalgamation and has its own dreams, wishes, and aspirations that should not
be submerged as footnotes in any other peoples' struggles.
“We Ijaw people are not Biafrans. Therefore, if or when a Ijaw person or group
feel a sense of allegiance to Biafra and speaks in its favor, let it be known that
such statements are the personal opinions of such persons, which do not reflect
the thoughts, views, and wishes of the entire Ijaw nation and the Niger Delta
people,” the group’s statement read.
The IYC also warned "overzealous members of IPOB" to stop further insults on
respected Ijaw elders and leaders, particularly critical stakeholders like Ann Kio
Briggs, who had committed so much to the Niger Delta, stressing that such
insults would no longer be tolerated.
“For the record, the Ijaw struggle for self-determination predates the Biafra
agitation. It is a known historical fact that a year before the world got to hear
of the term Biafra Republic, Ijaws, led by the late Major Isaac Jasper Adaka
Boro of blessed memory, declared a Niger Delta Republic in pursuit of the
emancipation of the Niger Delta people, which the progenitor of Biafra, late Col.
Ojukwu of blessed memory, fought against as the then governor of the old
eastern region.
"It is also on record that a year before MASSOB was founded, the IYC, through
the Kaiama Declaration, affirmed ‘our commitment to joint struggle with the
other ethnic nationalities in the Niger Delta area for self-determination.'
“We express our solidarity with all peoples’ organizations and ethnic
nationalities in Nigeria and elsewhere who are struggling for self-determination
and justice," the IYC added.

PoliticsIgbos Are Not ‘Real’ Jews - Messianic Jews by OduduaDefender(op): 10:33pm On Aug 11, 2017
Who is a Jew? According to a Jewish messianic group from America, you can find out for only $300 with a private DNA test.

And according to this test, the Jewish genetic family does not include Igbo people of Nigeria, a tribe of 30 million who have claimed a connection to Judaism for hundreds of years.

In a move that has garnered condemnation and anger from Nigerian Jews and international scholars, Jewish Voice Ministries, a messianic group from Arizona, announced this week that the Igbo are not “genetically” Jewish based on their private DNA tests.

Jewish Voice Ministries said they traveled to Nigeria to investigate claims that the Igbo people are descendants of ancient Israelites. Some Igbo believe that the term “Igbo” is a bastardized version of the word “Hebrew” and point to many cultural similarities between Igbo traditions and Judaism.

“The purpose of the tests was to provide them with testing and the pursuit of truth in terms of historical identity,” said a spokesman for Jewish Voice Ministries. “The DNA did not support their claim to be an ancient people of Israel, but we still consider them our brothers through common faith in the Messiah Yeshua.”

Remy Ilona, a Nigerian lawyer and professor, strongly denounced the test. Ilona is Igbo and a member of the approximately 10,000 Igbos who follow what he calls “rabbinical Judaism.” Ilona, a Times of Israel blogger, recently graduated from Florida International University with a Master’s in Religious Studies and will be an adjunct professor there in the fall.

“There is no test that can prove Jewishness,” said Ilona. “The culture has to point in that direction, and maybe a test can confirm what the culture is already saying.”

“The Igbos that are connecting to Judaism have no connection to these DNA tests and we oppose this,” he added.

Ilona said he understands why some Igbos agreed to get tested. “Africa is an area of the world that everyone tends to look down on,” he said. “Even though my Israelite culture is strong, because we’re Africans we are viewed with skepticism. I wanted that [question] to be covered so if you talk about culture, we will provide proof that our culture is Jewish.”

But Ilona was furious about the way the test was conducted. “The Jewish Voice came in and gave people the impression it’s a Jewish organization,” he said.

Ilona added that he views the Jewish Voice Ministry’s attempt to connect with the Redeemed Israel Community of Nigeria as thinly veiled proselytizing. He also faulted the organization’s testing methodology for being faulty and incomplete. He said the sample test group was too small given the vast population of Igbo, and in parts of Nigeria that are not majority Igbo. The Jewish Voices Ministry spokesman refused to comment on the organization’s testing methodology or other issues.

“I’d like to do a DNA test myself of those people [from Jewish Voice Ministries] who are coming to Nigeria,” to determine if they’re really Jewish, said Ilona.

The organization offers a Jewish Family Finder DNA test on its website for $300 (23andme.com offers a DNA test, without the emphasis on Judaism, for $99 in the United States and $150 abroad).

The Jewish Voice Ministry also provides medical care and services to international communities as part of its social outreach. In March, the head of Jewish Voice, Jonathan Bernis, told the Forward that the organization will base their medical outreach to Nigeria on the results of the test.

“We go to areas with a Jewish population or people who are historically tied to the Jewish people to provide aid,” Bernis told The Forward. “The result of the DNA testing would determine what degree of service we provide going forward.”

‘I know my ancestors were at Mt. Sinai, but maybe some of the Igbos don’t have that information’
Despite his dismissal of the Jewish Voice’s test, Ilona still believes that DNA tests can hold important information, but they should be done on a personal basis for people who are interested in learning more about their history, not by an outside group with a vested agenda. Ilona did a private DNA test himself a few months ago and found that he has Western Semitic roots which traced to the Red Sea region, which he believes proves his genetic ties to Judaism.

“I know my ancestors were at Mount Sinai, but maybe some of the Igbos don’t have that information,” he said.

Professor Tudor Parfitt, a world-renowned scholar who was one of the first people to utilize DNA testing to hypothesize about Jewish migration into Africa, called the Jewish Voice Ministry’s test “irresponsible.”

Parfitt, the head of Jewish Studies at Florida International University, where Ilona studies, gained recognition for his work in determining, via DNA, that the Lemba tribe in Zimbabwe and South Africa migrated from the Middle East. This was widely accepted as proof for the tribe’s oral tradition of being Jewish. He started his research into the subject on a trip to Israel in 1998 when he walked along the beach in Tel Aviv and asked Israelis who self-identified as kohanim, or part of the priestly class, to have their cheek swabbed so Parfitt could map their DNA. He identified the “Cohen modal haplotype,” a specific DNA marking unique to descendants of Aaron, was found in 52% of kohanim on the Tel Aviv promenade.

Afterwards, the Lemba tribe in Zimbabwe turned to Parfitt and asked to have their DNA tested in order to support their claims of Jewish identity. Parfitt agreed, and found that many members of the Lemba tribe, especially a sub-clan called Buba, shared the same genetic marker of the Cohen haplotype.

Parfitt is quick to point out that this DNA marker does not mean that the Lemba tribe is Jewish, but rather that the tribe likely migrated to Africa from the Middle East. Since this migration dovetails with the oral history of the tribe that they were descended from Israelites, it was widely interpreted that the Lemba are “genetically” Jewish.

“The DNA in that case seemed to justify the fact that there was a connection of some sort that solidified their faith and their Jewish or Semitic origin,” said Parfitt.

“Many people now believe their claim to be Jewish. The Igbo story now won’t have that same support,” he said.

Parfitt himself is Anglican Christian, though he jokes he’s “never had his own DNA tested for Judaism.”

Parfitt added that in the years since he publicized the Cohen haplotype, people have interpreted the information in many different and surprising ways. On a recent trip to Israel, Orthodox Jews who are trying to rebuild the Third Temple danced around him in ecstasy at the Western Wall, because the marking enables them to find “genetically pure” priests to serve in the Temple.

‘I didn’t stand up and say, hey, you’re not Jewish’
In 2003 and 2004, Parfitt was in Papua New Guinea with the Gogodala tribe, which also claimed to be one of the Lost Tribes. They also asked him to do genetic testing on their community, which Parfitt did.

“I had to go back and share that [the connection] was very circumspect,” said Parfitt. “I didn’t stand up and say, ‘hey, you’re not Jewish.’ I said, on the basis of DNA that was collected, there was no direct link between them and other Jews in other parts of the world. But I was not saying, ‘oh, stop it, you’re not Jewish.’”

Parfitt hopes that DNA can be used as part of a toolbox for understanding ancient migrations, a topic that fascinates him. He also pointed out that the DNA testing can be much more accurate for determining if “Jewish” tribes in Africa are connected to Spanish or Portuguese Jews who were expelled in 1492. Many ended up on the West Coast of Africa and disappeared, making it entirely possible that they assimilated into local culture while still maintaining Jewish traditions, Parfitt pointed out.

The key to accurately using DNA research is finding places where two groups have genetic similarities. So it’s much easier to trace a genetic line from 1492 than a migration through some parts of Africa thousands of years ago. “It’s difficult to get some kind of comparison, we don’t have lost tribes of Israel floating around the world,” he said.

Parfitt estimates that there are 14 to 15 million “shadow Jews,” people around the world who identify as Jewish but might not be accepted by the Jewish community as “traditional Jews.” In some cases, like the Lemba, there is a historical connection; other times, as in the case of the Abayudaya in Uganda or the Kehilat Kasuku in Kenya, it is a community that feels it is Jewish. “You don’t need historical justification to be part of a religious group,” he said.

“Can [DNA] say something about ancient migrations? Of course,” said Parfitt. “It’s the only tool we have to talk about ancient migration. But is it possible to reduce Judaism to DNA? The answer is no. It shouldn’t be used by anyone to decide who is Jewish and who is not.”

“The truth of the matter is it’s a racist discourse that has been around for a long time,” said Parfitt. “There are countless tribes that claim they come from the north-east or they’re Syrian or Roman, which is another way of saying ‘we don’t feel comfortable with being black and African.’ This was imposed upon them over many years by colonialism.”

“On the other hand, the idea that the Igbos are Jews is not a recent idea, it goes way back to the 18th century,” Parfitt added. “This is the lived experience on the part of the Igbo and many other Africans. Whether technically they’re connected with the ancient people of Israel, to my mind, is utterly and completely irrelevant. There is no bearing on the story. The idea of testing that hypothesis with DNA is not a good idea. It’s like testing myth, and you can’t test myth. Identity politics is connected to faith. It’s what you do with this identity, and they’re doing a lot.”

PoliticsBlame Nnamdi Kanu If Violence Erupts In Nigeria: Northern Coalition by OduduaDefender(op): 3:16pm On Aug 07, 2017
The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has told the international community to blame Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), if there is an outbreak of violence in the country. The coalition also accused Igbo religious and political leaders of issuing half-hearted condemnations of the activities IPOB, the reason for which it has made fresh formal complaints about the IPOB leader’s conduct to international bodies.

CNG’s position was contained in a statement issued after a recent meeting in Kano to review the progress of the Kaduna Declaration it made in June. Signed by Mr. Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, the coalition’s spokesperson, the statement said despite CNG’s commitment to peace, as shown by its meetings with groups from other parts of the country, Mr. Kanu and IPOB have remained provocative and belligerent by breaching the rights of Nigerians across the South-East geo-political zone.

“His recent action of forcefully grounding movement of people, including those from other regions, by shutting down most South-East cities, notwithstanding the mild and ineffective condemnations by some Igbo political, cultural and religious leaders, has foreclosed the avenues for an expected early peaceful resolution,” CNG said.

This development, it added, further justifies the concern it expressed the Kaduna Declaration and subsequent correspondences with the Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, and the international community.

According to the Northern coalition, Mr. Kanu’s unceasing inflammatory statements and actions have compelled it to push further for national and international action that will bring the Biafran issue to a closure once and for all.

The CNG stated that it is opposed to seeing the nation slip into anarchy and has alerted the international community as to where the blame should lie in the event of an outbreak of violence.

Among those whom the CNG said it has alerted through official communication are the President of the United Nations General Assembly, President of the United Nations Security Council for the month of August, President of the Human Rights Council (HRC) in Geneva and United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCHR).

Others are Chairman of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), President of the African Court of Peoples and Human Rights in Banjul, The Gambia; Chairman of the African Commission on People's and Human Rights, Speaker of the Pan-African Parliament, Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security, Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and Chairman and Executive Board members of the National Commission on Human Rights.

“We are compelled to insist on this line of action based on our belief that the sole motivating factor behind Kanu's action is to bring about a major ethnic and religious crisis across the country. While we faithfully await action from the Federal Government of Nigeria and the international community, we initiated a series of town hall meetings in major cities of the three geo-political zones of the North,” stated CNG.

The group recalled that it met in June, when it examined the impediments to national integration and identified IPOB’s agitation for Biafra as the major factor currently impeding Nigeria's stability. As a result, CNG said it took a position, through the Kaduna Declaration, which contained an ultimatum to Igbo people resident in the North to leave by 1 October. The declaration also contained a similar order to Northerners resident in the South-East to quit by the same date.

The coalition said it followed this up with a petition to the Secretary-General of the United Nations as well as major foreign diplomatic missions.

“We drew attention to the emerging trends in the country that are pregnant with complications and unforeseen consequences. We can proudly say, today, that this objective has to a large extent been achieved as the Biafran issue, which was neglected for 50 years, has now been brought to the front burner of our national discourse,” CNG added.

As a result of its initiatives, CNG explained that it has held meetings with many peace-loving groups, agencies, religious, cultural and traditional leaders with a view to achieving peace and stability.

Among those it met, disclosed CNG, were the Sultan of Sokoto, Northern Governors Forum and the National Peace Committee, which CNG charged with the responsibility of harmonizing previous and future efforts to resolve the crisis.

The first of such meetings was held in Kano on 3 August. At the end of the meeting CNG said it opened a dialogue with Igbo leaders in the 19 Northern states. The dialogue was facilitated by the State Security Services and supported by the Kano State government.

On account of the new the new lines of communication, CNG said it will make definite pronouncements at an international press conference in Abuja on Monday, August 14, 2017.

“We appreciate the concern of the State Security Services, Kano Command, in facilitating peace processes and the government of Kano state for its support and cooperation,” CNG said.
