Nairaland GeneralHospital Gives Women Wrong Sperm During Fertility Treatment by OduduaDefender(op): 3:49pm On Dec 28, 2016
Twenty-six women may have been given the wrong sperm during fertility treatment, the University Hospital in the Dutch city of Utrecht said on Wednesday.
“The hospital’s laboratory had made a ‘procedural error’ and the hospital would now check whether any of the women had become pregnant from sperm from the wrong man. The risk is small,’’ it said.
It said that half of the women have become pregnant or have given birth.
However, the laboratory error also affected frozen embryos. The University Hospital said that the affected couples had been informed.
Report says sperm cells are injected into eggs in the laboratory, using the technique known as in vitro fertilisation, IVF.
It said that from April 2015 until November 2016, the laboratory had used an incorrect instrument “in which it is possible that traces remained of the sperm cells of another man.’’

Nairaland GeneralBuhari Asks States To Pay Salaries From Debt Refund by OduduaDefender(op): 7:35pm On Dec 22, 2016
President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday requested state governors to pay as outstanding workers’ entitlements, at least 25 percent of the refunds made to them from excess deductions for external debt service.
According to a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the President approved N552.74bn to be paid in batches to all the states that are owed.
They are, however, expected to receive 25 per cent of their approved sums in the first instance before this week ends. About 33 states are affected.
Shehu explained that the refunds arose following the claims by the states that they had been overcharged in deductions for external debt service between 1995 and 2002.
He said that in a directive through the Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, the President said the issue of workers’ benefits, particularly salary and pensions, must not be allowed to continue, but it should be tackled with urgency.
The statement read, “When he assumed office last year, the President declared an emergency on unpaid salaries, following the discovery that 27 out of the 36 states had fallen behind in the payments to their workers, in some cases for up to a year.
“Following this, a bailout loan was issued to the states twice, with a first batch of about N300bn given to them in 2015 in the form of soft loans.
“The administration also got the Debt Management Office to restructure their commercial loans of over N660bn and extended the life span of the loans.
“Because this did not succeed in pulling many of the states out of distress, the Federal government this year gave out a further N90bn to 22 states as yet another bailout loans under very stringent conditions.
“President Buhari is of the opinion that the payment of salaries and pensions must be given priority to save both serving and retired workers and their families from distress.”

Nairaland GeneralIn Protest Against Fur Clothes, Barcelona Activists Go Naked by OduduaDefender(op): 4:18pm On Dec 22, 2016
Animal rights defenders stripped down Sunday in the Spanish tourist hub of Barcelona to draw attention to the cruelty of the fur industry.
Dozens of activists, naked, doused in fake blood and piled together in imitation of a heap of animal carcasses, staged a lie-in in the centre of town.
“How many lives just for a coat?” read a sign in English held up by Luisa Escribano, 53, and her daughter Barbara, 21, in the middle of the protesters.
“It is very important to draw attention to what happens to the animals, and which goes largely unnoticed. They suffer and die on farms, but their lives matter for me and my family,” said Luisa.
Each year, over 60 million animals — including over 32 million in the European Union — are killed around the world to make coats and other items from their skin, according to international animal rights group, AnimaNaturalis, which staged the demonstration
Europe produces 70 percent of the world’s mink fur and 63 percent of its fox fur, according to the group.
Denmark and Finland are the world’s largest producers and exporters of mink and fox fur.
Other major producers are Russia, Canada, Sweden and the Netherlands.

9jasite:
The jagaban of Delta state and indeed the the south south in the person of James Onanefe Ibori is out of the prison bonds that has long kept the Lion of the Niger Delta bound. Many Niger Delta sons have forgotten the fight he had to put up against Obasanjo and the Northern cabal to get the meagre 13% derivation the Niger Delta now receives. As a scape goat he was bundled by the north as a criminal we know he isnt.

Let us leave Ibori and speak of the former head of state and the 16 billion dollars that was frittered away for power. Am sorry, or should we talk about Folorunsho Alkija who became Africa's richest woman because of Oil wells that are found in the Niger Delta. These wells were bragged by her tribesman Obasanjo as the tool he used to make the former fashion designer to become Africa's richest woman.

Should we talk about Lagos largest land owner in the person of Ahmed Tinubu. Rather let us concentrate on Otedola and T. Y. Danjuma who simply became billionaires on the wealth of the Niger Delta. I decided to spare Mike Adenuga and Dangte who have diversified port folio apart from the huge oil wells they own in the Niger Delta.

We haven't even spoken of the CEO of OANDO [the Tinubu's] who exploit the Niger Delta daily. If Nigeria is to be a nation run on the principle of justice and equity then the Niger Delta should have the largest number of Billionaires in Nigeria however we see the region in poverty and lack due to injustice and tribal politics.

The bottom line is if Ibori is to be castigated over the wealth of the Niger Delta that belongs to him and his kinsmen. Then let the bigger crooks that have pilfered the nations wealth be castigated also. We cannot give preferences to crooks from majority tribes and wax their sins while expanding the sins of minorities even in their own nations.

For now the Lion of the Niger Delta is free and will soon come home.

PoliticsBola Tinubu And Those Who Want Him Dead - Fani Kayode by OduduaDefender(op): 6:42pm On Sep 26, 2016
I do not like to delve into matters touching and concerning the APC because I am not a member. However what is happening in the ruling party today transcends partisan politics and should be a concern to us all.

At the very least, we can learn some very hard lessons from it.

The truth is that the behaviour of Chief John Odigie-Oyegun towards the man that single-handedly made him the National Chairman of the party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is reprehensible. And neither does this matter begin or end with the way and manner in which the Ondo State governorship primaries were conducted or its final outcome.
It goes much deeper than that and the Ondo affair is only symptomatic of a much deeper malaise and wider conspiracy to humiliate the National Leader of the APC by forces within his party that are even greater than him.

Those forces represent the hidden hand. They are a small cabal of power-brokers who constitute the leadership of the Buhari-led CPC. These people believe that they were born to rule and that they own Nigeria.

They simply used Tinubu’s old ACN as a compliant and ready piggy-back to catapult their way back to power and once they achieved that, they never looked back.

Some of us warned Tinubu at the time about the dangers of riding the tiger and allowing himself to be used by these very dark and sinister forces, but he would not listen.

No true student of history could have made such a cataclysmic and monumental error, given the terrible experiences of others from the south-west, and, indeed, the entire south, who collaborated with such ultra-conservative, sectarian and arcane forces with a clear and distinct ethnic and religious agenda in the past.

Such forces can never be comfortable with a well-connected, highly sophisticated, independent-minded, strong, unpredictable, uncontrollable and experienced Yoruba leader and southern gladiator with a June 12 pedigree, a NADECO background, a massive war-chest and a widespread and formidable political base.

They may use him to achieve their objective, but they can never trust him or allow him to have control of the party machinery or to wield any real power when it comes to running the affairs of the nation.

Most importantly, once they have finished using him, it becomes their duty and cardinal objective not just to cut him down to size but also to castrate and render him impotent and eventually destroy him.

That is their way. It is also a classic and vintage Nicollo Machiavelli move. This great writer that has had more influence on political thinking and strategies than perhaps any other author in human history taught us a critical and crucial lesson in his famous 14th century literary masterpiece and treatise on the power game titled “The Prince”. He tells us that the first thing that a Prince must do once he has achieved power is to destroy those that put him there.

And that is precisely what those that seek to do Tinubu in are doing. Worst still they are using his own erstwhile disciples as a first line of attack against him.

It is not just Odigie-Oyegun that has turned his back on him but also his former political proteges and former ACN associates. Their objective is to establish a new political order in the south-west which is beholden to them alone, to replace Tinubu as the National Leader of the party and to utterly demystify and crush him in order to prepare the ground for the emergence of a new and more compliant Yoruba running mate for either Buhari himself or el-Rufai in 2019.

As a graphic illustration of this interesting and unfolding agenda, the powers that be in the APC, led by Buhari himself, fired six shots at Tinubu immediately after they formed government. The first was the Senate Presidency affair and the Bukola Saraki matter which saw the defeat and humiliation of Tinubu’s preferred candidate for Senate President.

The second shot was the Speaker of the House of Representatives affair and the Yakubu Dogara matter which, again, saw the defeat and humiliation of Tinubu’s preferred candidate for the position of Speaker of the House.

The third was the vital issue of ministerial appointments in which not one single ministerial nominee of Tinubu’s was accepted and appointed as a minister by Buhari. Every single person that he nominated from the south-west and elsewhere as minister was rejected and, instead, the slots were filled by his political adversaries and/or their nominees.

Many erroneously believe that Mr. Lai Mohammed, who is from Kwara State, was Tinubu’s choice and nominee for Minister of Information; but this was not the case. The person that he nominated for Minister of Information was not Lai Mohammed but Mr. Dele Alake, his former Commissioner of Information in Lagos State.

Again, he nominated Mr. Wale Edun, his former Commissioner of Finance in Lagos State, for the position of Minister of Finance but this was rejected and Governor Ibikunle Amosun’s candidate, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, got the job instead.

This went on across the board for every single person that Tinubu nominated and presented for the position of minister last year and it was a terrible humiliation for him. It was a dirty slap in his face.

The fourth shot was the James Faleke matter in Kogi State where it was agreed by the real landlords of the APC in the core north that Tinubu must not be allowed to gain a foothold in the north central zone by getting his own Yoruba kinsman and candidate to be elected as governor of that state.

Hence, Faleke was ruthlessly dropped and shabbily treated and another person was selected to be the gubernatorial candidate of that state. It worked, Faleke went to court and, sadly, he lost. That was the end of the story.

The fifth shot is the thorough and systematic, though subtle and covert, humiliation and relegation of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, a close associate and political protege of Tinubu and a spiritual son of the revered Pastor Enoch Adeboye of The Redeemed Christian Church of God, to not just a spare tyre as vice president but also to a very flat one.

Rather than being allowed to participate in the crucial decision-making processes on vital and critical issues of state and governance as any vice president should, Osinbajo has been kept in the dark about virtually everything and he has little or no power to effect anything.

When such decisions are to be debated, discussed and made, the vice president is never invited into the room and neither is he even aware that there is such a meeting going on. Worse still, he is constantly being directed to represent the President at official functions all over the country, as if he were more his Personal Assistant, Special Advisor or minister rather than the vice president of the country. Osinbajo’s crime is simply that he is loyal to Tinubu and he has refused to dump or betray him.

The sixth and perhaps most devastating shot is the fact that the party machinery has not only been taken away from Tinubu with the effective hijacking of Odigie-Oyegun, but that it has also opted to do the bidding of his mortal enemies and to fight him.

An eloquent testimony to this disturbing fact is the outcome of the Ondo State gubernatorial primaries where Tinubu’s candidate was edged out and cheated of the nomination by the party leadership. This was the last straw that broke the camel’s back and predictably, Tinubu has reacted in a very loud, aggressive and profound manner by publicly calling for the removal of the National Chairman of the party.

Yet, calling for the removal of Odigie-Oyegun is not enough. The whole situation calls for critical thinking, sober reflection and deep retrospection. The point that needs to be clearly understood when considering these six shots and the unfolding anti-Tinubu agenda within the APC is the fact that, contrary to all pretensions, President Muhammadu Buhari is part and parcel of it and he is, in fact, the moving spirit behind the whole conspiracy.

If Tinubu does not realign quickly and fight hard to save his dwindling political fortunes and empire, his APC friends and allies will destroy him in a slow, clinical, sadistic and systematic manner. And they will do it with a big, beautiful and friendly smile on their faces. He gave them his all, caused them to win an election and trusted them to honour their word and treat him with respect and decorum.

Yet, if the truth is to be told, no matter what mistakes he may have made, Tinubu does not deserve to be treated this way.

Up until the Presidential elections were conducted last year, he led and held together the south-western wing of the APC with an iron fist and he was the undisputed leader of the APC in that zone. All four APC governors from the south-west and virtually every single party leader waited on his every word and he called the shot.

Sadly today, just over one year later, he is a caricature of his former self. Today, Tinubu can only boast of having the ear and the full support of only two of those governors, namely, Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State, who will NEVER betray him no matter what; and Akinwumi Ambode of Lagos State who will also stand firmly behind him until the very end.

The truth is that Tinubu has lost much ground and political mileage in recent times and, as more daggers are pulled out over the next few months and years, it is bound to get worse for him. Yet, that does not mean that he is finished. I say this because he is a tried and tested fighter and a formidable adversary who is quite capable of pulling the whole APC house down. It would be a fatal error for any of his adversaries to underestimate him or dismiss his ability to fight back.

In July 2016, just after my release from detention and during the course of an interview with Channels Television (which can still be viewed on Youtube), Mr. Seun Okinbaloye asked me whether I could ever contemplate going back to the APC and how I thought the ruling party would fare into the future. I told him that I would NEVER go back to the APC under ANY circumstances. I also told him that in any case, by 2019, there would not be an APC, as it is presently constituted, because the party would have spilt up into three separate and distinct political entities.

I told him that the Tinubu group comprising of men like Baba Bisi Akande, Rauf Aregbesola, Akinwunmi Ambode and others would establish one party; the Atiku Abubakar group comprising of men like Bukola Saraki, Rabiu Kwakwanso and many of the former PDP leaders and governors that had left for the APC when President Goodluck Jonathan was in power would establish another; and that the Buhari group comprising of men like Nasir el-Rufai, Bello Masari, Aminu Tambuwal, Rotimi Amaechi, Rochas Okorocha, Chris Ngige, Ogbonaya Onu, Adams Oshiomhole and virtually the entire structure of the old CPC leadership in the core north would constitute yet another. I stand by this prediction.

These three strong and equally forceful factions can be likened to the proverbial three blind yet ravenous wolves. They cannot stay in the same cage or remain on the same platform for long without tearing one another to pieces. Eventually, they will all go their separate ways and, hopefully, contend with a newly-branded and reinvigorated PDP in the field of battle in 2019.

What we are witnessing today in the ranks of the APC is the beginning of that bitter separation and messy divorce and it is going to get far worse. It will be loud, bitter, acrimonious and rancorous and many political empires, careers and aspirations will be destroyed as a consequence of it.

My hope and prayer is that the PDP, which is also going through its own rigorous process of redefinition and reinvigoration, can get its act together before then, take advantage of the situation, pick up the pieces and win the presidential election in 2019. I am sure that we will.

Meanwhile, my advice to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is to watch his back, consolidate his base, fight his enemies, reach out to new friends, accept the fact that he is at war and sleep with one eye wide open. The truth is that it will get far worse before it gets any better.

PoliticsDangote Refinrey Will Solve W’africa’s Fuel Supply Challenge – Ambode by OduduaDefender(op): 4:26pm On Aug 02, 2016
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, on Tuesday said the largest single line refinery in the world being developed at the Lekki Free Trade Zone by Alhaji Aliko Dangote will change the face of oil and gas business in the West African region.

Governor Ambode, said this at the LFTZ during an extensive inspection tour of the Dangote Refinery by the Togolese President, Mr Faure Gnassingbe.

Ambode said the refinery eloquently attests to the fact that there is a positive investment climate in Lagos which has resulted in massive investor confidence, confirmation that Lagos is a prime investment destination.

The Governor said: “This investment (Dangote Refinery) is one of the biggest in Africa today and will have a huge impact on the economy of not only Nigeria but the whole of West African region.
This refinery, when completed, will be the largest single line refinery anywhere in the world refining 650,000 barrels of crude oil daily.

“Apart from creating jobs, this refinery will contribute immensely to solving the fuel supply challenge in the West African region.”

The Governor expressed satisfaction with the level of work done on the project so far, saying that he was happy that a lot of progress had been made.

He commended Dangote for his vision, doggedness and unwavering desire to contribute positively to the growth of the Nigerian economy, as well as his confidence in the Lagos economy.

Governor Ambode said aside the fact that the project confirmed the positive investment climate in Lagos which has resulted in massive investor confidence, he also strongly believes that the future prosperity of West Africa is in collaboration between government and investors, which was why his administration has been working hard to encourage investment in the State.

He reiterated that Lagos is home to all nations, races and creeds, including substantial Togolese population, adding, “I’m positive that we are providing them with the opportunities to get ahead in their endeavors.”

Governor Ambode said as a prominent Head of State in the West African region, he was not oblivious of the interest of President Gnassingbe in the Dangote Refinery, adding that the project was one of the emerging opportunities in Lagos State.

While inviting Togolese investors to take advantage of the positive investment climate in Lagos, Governor Ambode said the State is open for businesses, and that his administration, in a bid to encourage investment, had massively invested in infrastructure and security of lives and property.

Nairaland GeneralFG Extends Online Job Application by OduduaDefender(op): 2:39pm On Aug 01, 2016
The Federal Government on Monday extended the timeline for the N-Power online jobs and training applications till the end of August.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Vice-President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Laolu Akande, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists.

Akande said the decision to extend the timeline was taken in order to pull in more potentially qualified candidates and expand the opportunity base around and across the country.
He said the application process which commenced on June 12 was initially billed to close on July 25.

The statement read, “However, being very keen on keeping its promise of empowering and uplifting young Nigerians by improving their livelihood and creating opportunities such as this (in an as inclusive and diverse manner), the Federal Government is providing an additional grace period for more young Nigerians to access the N-Power opportunity.

“The new deadline for the receipt of applications is now Wednesday, August 31, 2016.

“N-Power is one of the initiatives of the N500bn President Muhammadu Buhari’s Social Investment Programme designed to empower young Nigerians with life-long skills to find or create work.

“The N-Power programme is segmented into three: N-Power Teachers Corps Agriculture and Health related jobs; N-Power Knowledge for ICT and N-Power Build for building services and artisanal training

“N-Power is targeted at young Nigerians aged between 18 and 35 and is aimed at enlisting a total of 600,000 young Nigerians in phases, and under different sectors, in the largest capacity development and empowerment effort yet in the country.”

Akande said the Federal Government would continue to work with state governments through their respective focal persons on Social Investments to ensure that N-Power is diverse and inclusive.

He said the extension presented an opportunity for persons who have not had the opportunity to apply to do so now.

“This will also allow those yet to complete the application process to ensure they see the process through as incomplete applications will not be processed.

“To apply, simply log on to www.npower.gov.ng and register for any one of the three sub-programmes.

“Please note that applications may be subject to other criteria which can be found on the N-Power website. Any prospective applicant, who has any challenge with uploading supporting documents unto the Portal because of the size of the files, should attach these documents in a mail transmitted to support@npower.gov.ng

“After the Application portal closes, there will be a verification, testing and selection process before successful applicants are enlisted in phases as the specific programme design may necessitate,” he added.

Akande also said the Federal Government would publicise the selection criteria before the application process comes to a close.

Modalities relating to the enlistment process, according to him, will no longer commence on Monday as earlier envisaged due to the demand for extension by many Nigerians from across several states.

PoliticsFG To Start Paying Ex-militants On Monday by OduduaDefender(op): 7:37pm On Jul 31, 2016
The Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta and Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Brig-Gen. Paul Boroh (retd), has said ex-Niger Delta militants will start receiving their stipends on Monday.

Boroh consequently appealed to the ex-militants in the region to shelve the planned protests scheduled to hold on Monday.

This was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the Head of the Media and Communication Department of the office of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Abuja, Mr. Piriye Keyaramo.

The coordinator, who expressed concern over the plight of the ex-agitators in respect of the delay in the payment of their stipends, explained that President Muhammandu Buhari appreciated their patience and the challenges were being addressed.

The statement read in part, “President Buhari attaches so much importance to the Amnesty Programme, which explains why the President in his inaugural address to the nation specifically promised to invest heavily in the projects, and programmes currently in place for the ex-agitators in the region.”

Boroh added that the Federal Government planned to improve the amnesty programme for the benefit of the 30,000 ex-militants and other youths in the region.

“President Muhammandu Buhari, is already putting together a youth development and empowerment package that would directly impact the ex-agatators and other youths in the region,” he said.

RomanceDo Men/guys Still Get Insulted When They Make Overture To A Lady In This Age? by OduduaDefender(op): 5:35pm On Jul 30, 2016
I cannot believe that some ladies in this age still abuse men who approach them for a serious relationship that the man intends to lead to a marriage: I thought it's gone with the past. I have always believed that the lady who may not be interested in such proposal(for whatever reason) should courteously decline instead of resulting to raining abuses all over the man since it's not by force.
Armed with this belief, I was therefore bewildered to be met with a harsh and hostile response when many months ago, I approached a lady to woo her. We were not strangers to each other. I am neither a play boy nor use "a play boy's language" 'cos I didn't need it anyway. In fact, I really meant the business, but I don't know, maybe in her eyes I didn't measure up to her standard/expectation. Her response was uncivil. I swear I had never been abused and felt embarrassed like that in my life!
Did she have to do that for whatever reason? Even if she wasn't gonna agree, a simple "no" would have sufficed.
I would have concluded that was how ladies behave but the next lady I approached declined respectfully and even gave reason it would be impossible ( even though she didn't have to).
The lady I'm engaged to now also first declined with such a good and respectful manner that even encouraged me not to give up on her until she eventually accepted three months later.
The irony of it all is that my fiancee now is even better than the abusive one in all facets (and with all sense of sincerity I say this). She is more beautiful, educated well behaved and even has a better job.
Now I ask my fellow men reading this: have you had such an experience before and how did you feel?
And to the ladies: is it right to abuse a guy who woos you or confront him with such a very harsh and hostile attitude?
