We built Auction site like eBay for Nigeria. Instead of prices going up, they come down

We would love to give you a first hand access to GramSquare, Nigeria's first auction website for fashion items. Unlike other auction sites such as eBay, you as a buyer beat the prices down to what you can afford, the same way we shop physically at markets.

Business / Re: Where Can I Buy Men Office Long Sleeves Shirt by oelesin: 4:19pm On Jul 03, 2019
Whitelite:
Please nairalanders am looking for where I can buy men office long sleeves shirt at wholesale price.

Hi @Whitelite,

Can you check out GramSquare.com? We have sellers across Lagos (for now) with varying stock of fashion items including long sleeve shirts. We launched GramSquare.com as an auction online marketplace with the Nigerian culture of negotiating lower prices in mind.

With GramSquare.com, you can negotiate prices with sellers in real time from a click instead of exchanging messages time. Once an agreed price is reached, you proceed to make payments and await your delivery.

Since we just launched, you can be part of our first 100 shoppers and stand a chance to win a $20 Amazon Gift card.

Looking forward to you shopping on GramSquare.

Business / Good People Of Nairaland Help Us Validate Our Business Idea - Part 2 by oelesin: 2:02am On Jun 26, 2019
WE BELIEVE WE'VE BUILT SOMETHING AWESOME FOR YOU. AS THE END USER, WE'LL LET YOU DECIDE

If you do manage to get to the end of this post explaining our ideas (which is essentially our MVP or Minimum Viable Product), you have the option of doing one of two things — click the Like text, thus declaring your allegiance to the idea, for all Nairalanders to see, or click the (much less colourful) Quote Text and tell us why you think our idea sucks, and what we can do better, if at all. (Unlike your ex, we’ll listen to what you say.)

So let’s jump right in

If you haven't read our previous post on our business idea, please click here to. In that, we focused on how GramSquare would make lives easier for online retailers. Helping them focus on what they know how to do best, growing their business. In this post, we will explain how GramSquare is creating an enjoyable online shopping experience for shoppers.

As Nigerians, we look for a bargain in everything. Whether this makes us feel in control or because of some economic realities. The truth is that we want the most value for our purchases. I remember growing up and going shopping with my mother. We would nearly walk around the entire market, pricing items from meat sellers to food sellers. This wasn't a fun experience for me, but my mother seemed to get the best deals.

We have been able to build digital experiences from our daily lives with the likes of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, WhatsApp. Yet, we have not been able to express this innate Naija attitude of wringing-out bargains when shopping online. Either we are told that's the discount price or the final price, leaving us out of control.

Now I'm aware, how does GramSquare help?
GramSquare brings back our culture of bargaining. With GramSquare, we can negotiate with sellers digitally without leaving the comfort of our homes right from our mobile devices.

Let's say you see a bag on Instagram you want to buy, you probably drop a comment of the post and slide into her DM. Then the seller asks you to add her via WhatsApp. At first, you're reluctant but because you like the bag and you want to rock it to next Saturday's Owambe, you add her to your contacts and reach out via WhatsApp. You send out your first message but no response until an hour later in which case, you are already busy with something else. You get a response and negotiations start. You know the rest of the story. What if you didn't have to go through all that stress? The promise of online shopping is comfort and ease. Enter GramSquare.

GramSquare saves you hours of wasted time and gets you into bargaining the best deal immediately with a click. Once you spot an item you want and tap the Bargain button, you're on your way to your best value for your money immediately. The more you click, the more you increase your bargaining power and the better the value for your money. Once seller agrees, you make your payments immediately and seller reaches out to you to arrange delivery. See image below on how it works

Ok, GramSquare helps me save time. But is there more?
And YES, THERE'S MORE!!!

You can earn extra side cash with GramSquare. Once you signup, you can refer your friends and family (even people you don't like). When they make their first purchase on GramSquare, you will get ₦1,500 on everyone. The sweet spot is that, they also get ₦1,500 on their first purchases as well. So you give and you get which makes you a great friend and family member.

Like and Share (if you love us) or Comment (and tell us why you don’t).

In our next post, we will let you know how we protect you as buyer from being scammed.

Business / Re: [question]: Why Do Nigerians Like To Negotiate Even When Buying Online? by oelesin: 5:59pm On Jun 23, 2019
budaatum:

The issue in Nigeria is competition and reminds me of the non-nego tomato seller at Ketu.

There used to be no Ketu Market in the early 80s when one woman set up a stall of one big tray of non-nego tomatoes and peppers. Her tomatoes were always the best quality and sold far too expensive for the likes of me who, considering the number of mouths I had to feed, sacrificed quality for quantity and went to aboki in Mile 12, but she piqued my interest. Right by her stall which she opens at 4 would customers queue to buy very good quality non-nego tomatoes and peppers, till one day, undercut woman set up her own stall of one big tray of very good quality tomatoes and peppers right next to nen-nego woman and priced her tomatoes and peppers slightly less than non-nego woman priced her's.

Not long after, considering the huge profit to be made as Ketu developed and grew, quality, price, location, customer care, big mouth, smile, flirt, rude, obnoxious all set up their own stalls of tomatoes and peppers and so developed Ketu Market where tomatoes and pepper sellers compete. Today, Ketu Market is a thriving nego-market for all sorts of people competing to sell all sorts of foods. And the customers have found a place to bargain because there's always someone prepared to undercut.

Those "different clime" people with a "different mentality" were not born with "get it right" genes as history shows their markets developed out of tomato selling in Ketu Market. The customers have learned and adapted to an environment of non-nego by price-checking all the negos and non-negos, buying from the one that best fulfils their needs. The smart trader is the one who knows to not only compete on price and so gets it right by adding value to every sale.

This is really an interesting and in-depth breakdown. Thanks a lot.

For us, this is something we believe is local to our culture. If we can get it right with inputs and usage from people like you, most especially helping to spread the word, a sustainable technology product is within our reach.

Not a bad idea at all, but you must be willing pay big to market(advertisements tv etc) it.
You still have to specify your target market a little further(I’m sure you product/design manager will understand).

Hint: use one small group to start.

After these you can then move to the next stage of production.

Excellent points and thank you so much for your feedback. I'd be glad if you can help share with your friends as well. We will definitely appreciate their input

So let’s jump right in

The idea of GramSquare is best explained with a relatable example, which is what the next few paragraphs and images try to do.

As a retailer trying to grow your small business so as to attain financial freedom considering the economic state of our beloved country - Nigeria, you make use of different digital platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, may be a website to build online presence. With high hopes of increasing customer base, you engage in different tactics such daily posts, videos, using right hashtags, joining pods (WhatsApp or Telegram) to drive engagement, follow-for-follow, etc. You even see videos of others who claim to have recorded successes using the social media tactics but wondering why this is not working for you.

Let's say you get a potential customer who slides into your DM on Instagram asks about price. You ask the her to add you on WhatsApp to continue the conversation. She adds you, and negotiation begins. After much chit-chat and you both have agreed on a bargained price, you ask her to make payments and then you don't get response from her anymore. This can be really frustrating especially when you're looking to grow sales and meet needs on the home front. Now imagine you have to do this 10 times everyday - believe me, this is very little compared to what you do everyday.

You need a better way to get this done — reach more customers, grow your online presence, handle negotiations with customers, make sales, maintain customer loyalty, organize inventory and set the ball rolling without all this back and forth

Right about now you’re wondering — Ok, I agree, selling online is not as simple as ABC. But how can GramSquare help me?

The image below shows how you can make your Instagram posts available as a product listing on GramSquare

Here’s some boring text to explain what GramSquare does. (Don’t worry we have more pictures coming.)
1. Copy the link of your Instagram post
2. Open the GramSquare App and paste the in the text input.
3. GramSquare automatically loads the post from Instagram
4. You then provide the name of the item, asking price, last price and category of the product.
5. Click add to store and the product is available for GramSquare visitors to see.

Interested? Then read on to find out how GramSquare works.
Think of GramSquare as a tool with which you can convert your Instagram account into an online store. Where you can turn a post into product on sale.

What can a GramSquare do?
Increase Sales - we see one of the most important features on GramSquare is that it automatically posts your products to Facebook, Google, and Instagram ads with little effort from you. Also helps you handle payments, manage your inventory and keep your customers notified once you have new items for sale.

Ok, so GramSquare allows me to convert my Instagram account to an online store right from my phone. Is there more?

Why do people price in markets, malls, schools and anywhere? This was never a question for us until we asked people outside Nigeria.

It struck me big time. Mehn! Nigerians love pricing. We'll price Maggi, locust bean, Agege bread, sliced bread, and fufu even from the local "mama put".

Studies have shown that of 90% sold items done in Nigeria every day are a product of strong bargaining and negotiation?

Can GramSquare help me handle bargaining back and forth?
YES!!! We designed GramSquare to help you handle negotiations, freeing you up of chit-chat and allowing you focus on spending more time with your loved ones and planning the future of your business.

The images below show how this is done for you. The example is a Unisex Sneaker with an asking price of NGN 7500 and final price NGN 6500. A potential buyer opens a bargain by clicking the yellow button with the price. The price goes down until it reaches the final price. Immediately, customer bargains to the last price, she is prompted to enter her payment and delivery details. Once this is done, you get notified
and make the delivery - WHOOPS money in the bank for you!!!

In Nigeria there's shops everywhere. Every 20, 10 steps if you live in Lagos, there's a shop. What am I talking about! We have hawkers, people on the street yelling "come and buy what I'm selling!" In some places they'll stick it in your face and say "buy!" Like say na dem put the money in your pocket, or they'll drag you off the street and not let you leave their shops until you buy something. So you either learn to say you're not interested if you're not, or you say "How much?" And trust me, those traders don't shirk at 100% mark ups or more if you seem gullible enough so you slash the price they say in half, then you chop off another half if you're really brutal or less if you're not, it's not as if you willingly went in the shop when they dragged you off the street. And it's your money. Of course you're gonna negotiate. Or you'd never get through the market with your wallet intact! We do same on the web I guess. Never know when you might come across a bargain. We are traders afterall. At least those who go to market are. And some just do it cos they enjoy the banter.

You got to learn to weed out the timewasters is all. Stick non-negoprice on it and don't entertain and you might be bothered less.

This is a good point, but do buyers also try the same shopping online?

To your last point, wouldn't a non-negoprice drive away potential customers?
