Health / HIV Ravages Internally Displaced Persons Camps In Northeast by OfficialArinze(m): 7:09am On Nov 06, 2016
Citing the claims by an unnamed medical worker in its report, HRW quotes the health practitioner as saying those infected with HIV in one IDP rose from 200 to 500, with more cases unreported, over fear of stigmatisation.

The report was however silent about the identity of the camp mentioned. as there are several IDP camps in the region.

Part of the report read: “A medical health worker in one of the camps, which has 10, 000 residents said the number of people requiring treatment for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections has risen sharply, from about 200 cases when the camp clinic was established in 2014 to more than 500, in July 2016.

“The health worker said she believed that many more women could be infected but were ashamed to go to the clinic and are likely to be suffering in silence without treatment.”

On Monday, October 31, a damning report about how men of the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigerian Army take advantage of IDPs in their various camps, raping them at will came to the fore.

In the report, HRW said its research showed that government officials that included policemen, soldiers, vigilante groups and even camp leaders defile little girls and young women.

On the same day, President Muhammadu Buhari swiftly reacted and ordered the investigation into the claims by the HRW.

“President Buhari has instructed the Inspector General of Police and the state governors of the affected states to immediately commence investigations into the issue.

“Their findings will determine the next course of action for the government and define an appropriate response,” a statement by presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu noted.

On Thursday, November 3, the Nigeria police in a statement by the force public relations officer Dan Awunah said the Inspector General of Police (IGP) has set up an investigative panel on the matter.

The panel as directed by the IGP would immediately commence thorough investigation into all cases of alleged sexual abuses, exploitation, harassment, gender based violence among other in the refugee camps.

Crime / Human Heads Sold For #10,000 by OfficialArinze(m): 1:39pm On Oct 30, 2016
– A herbalist has confessed to purchasing human heads

– The police suspected murder as cut marks were found of the skulls

– The perpetrators claimed they found the corpses on a land

Police officers from the Oyo state command have arrested three persons in possession of two human skulls.

The Punch reports that Samuel Adegbuyi who is the state commissioner of police said they were arrested in Ogbomoso after reports came in that they were dealing in human parts.

The three suspects are Ramoni Akeem, Azeez Ojelade, and Salimon Salami and according to the police, murder was suspected as one of the skulls had a deep machete cut.

Akeem confessed that he paid N10, 000 for the skulls and that Salami was the vendor.

He said: “I am a herbalist and I heal people with herbs. I have never used body parts for rituals. One day, a friend came to me and said his friend discovered two corpses on a land where he had wanted to cut trees. He asked if I knew what body parts could be used for. I told him that I did not know anything about charms prepared with body parts.

“One of our friends, Saheed Ifa, who is a senior herbalist, heard about it and said he could make use of the skulls to prepare charms. When the skulls were produced, the man who brought them demanded for N10, 000. I paid him in four instalments. But that is all I know about the skulls. Ifa has travelled to Lagos. I don’t know where he lives in Lagos.”

Salami also said that he discovered the skull but denied engaging in any wrong doing.

He said: “I was asked to cut some trees on a large piece of land but when I got there, I discovered two corpses and I told a friend that I was afraid to work on the land because someone killed two people there. He said I should continue with my work while he looked for what to do with the corpses. When he got a buyer, he contacted me and I went back to the bush and dismembered the heads from the bodies.”

Crime / Rapists Stab Pregnant Woman To Death In Ikorodu by OfficialArinze(m): 11:45am On Oct 22, 2016
Residents of Ibeshe in Ikpakodo area of Ikorodu were thrown into pandemonium on Friday morning after a group of rapists attacked and killed a pregnant woman, leaving her husband and children in critical conditions.

According to reports from the area, the group had been terrorising the residents for a long period with a certain pedophile (Badoo) particularly wreaking havoc by sleeping with minors and newly-married women.

But in this latest development as reported by The Guardian, the woman was stabbed and murdered in cold blood while her husband, their two children and a neighbour were quickly rushed to the Emergency Unit of the Ikorodu General Hospital, Lagos.

The incident was said to have happened in Oluwoye community in the Lagos suburb and left the families of Abe Kazeem and Sunday Robert in serious agony as residents are still in serious shock over the terrible attacks.

Matthew Mogalu, who lives in the area, explained how the families were attacked. He said: “It was not the first time such an incident has happened. A killer gang, whose motives we don’t know, yesterday stormed the house of Kazeem.

“The gang believed to be militants gained access through the window. The men, though were heavily armed, did not shoot their victims. They hit the family with iron rod before they stabbed them several times.

“Kazeem was stabbed in the neck and hit with iron rod. His pregnant wife, Afusatu, was hit with iron rod on her stomach before she was stabbed severally.

“Her two children were stabbed severally too. I think the woman died because of her pregnant situation.”

Speaking further, the man said: “Robert is living close to the Kazeems. I think he raised the alarm when he saw the killer squad and the hoodlums got angry and went after him.

“He was hit with grinding stone before he was stabbed.

“It was the groaning of Robert that attracted a neighbour, who raised the alarm that Robert had not come out since morning.

“When his door was opened, we saw Robert lying in the pool of his blood. He was pointing at Kazeem’s house.

“Some of us rushed him to the hospital, while some raced to Kazeem’s house. When we arrived Kazeem’s house, what we saw is better imagined.

“His wife has died. He and his two children were unconscious. We rushed them to the hospital too.

“As I am talking to you, I don’t know their condition. In fact, their conditions were so critical that only God’s intervention can save them from death.

“This is not the first time this type of incident is happening in this area. About two months ago, a family of a taxi driver was wiped out in a similar was, but they were shot. I think members of the killer squad are militants who are sending a warning signal to us.

“I am appealing to the Lagos State Police Command to intensify patrol in Ikorodu area. We have vigilante groups in this area, but they have failed us. I don’t know why a crime of this magnitude should happen twice in a month without a suspect being caught.”

Speaking also on the attack, another resident identified as Emmanuel Ibe, stated however, that “I think the gang are armed robbers who came to terrorise us. I think the families resisted the robbers.”
Nairaland / General / Days After B’haram Attack, 83 Nigerian Soldiers Missing by OfficialArinze(m): 4:23pm On Oct 21, 2016
Four days after the Nigerian army came under Boko Haram attack, at least 83 soldiers, including a commanding officer, are still missing, Premium Times reports.

According to top level military sources monitoring the development, the soldiers were still missing in action as of Friday morning, four days after the attack. On Tuesday, October 18, the Nigerian Army confirmed the attack in a statement, but did s not given further updates. It did not also admit 83 soldiers were missing.

It was reported earlier how the Nigerian troops drowned in a river as they scampered for safety in the face of a superior firepower from the terrorists.

About 22 of the fleeing soldiers were later rescued by their Nigerien counterparts and dispatched to a hospital in Diffa, southern Niger, several others were fatally wounded after Boko Haram opened fire on them when they jumped into the River Yobe.

The missing Commanding Officer of 223 Tank Battalion in Gashigar, was identified as K. Yusuf, a lieutenant colonel.

Military sources further revealed that the troops could not withstand Boko Haram because they had only two light armour tanks to work with.

Even the two tanks were withdrawn from the battlefront in Damasak to Gashigar, leaving soldiers in Damasak and other small units nearby with no tank.

Apart from the poor equipment, the renewed show of strength by Boko Haram has frightened many, coming after months of relative success by the soldiers.

In another development, the chief of army staff Tukur Buratai on Tuesday, October 18, said all Boko Haram terrorists have been eliminated from Nigerian territory.

The army chief speaking in Lagos at the Albati Barracks while commissioning some structures said most of the terrorists’ attacks are carried out by insurgents from the Lake Chad Basin. Buratai said these attacks are mostly carried out outside the borders of Nigeria.

Nairaland / General / Fire Razes Popular Prostitutes' Brothel In Lagos by OfficialArinze(m): 6:27pm On Oct 06, 2016
Some prostitutes in Agege area of Lagos state have been displaced after fire razed their brothel on Thursday, October 6.

Our correspondent who visited the scene of the fire outbreak reports that the prostitutes were seen scampering for safety after the ugly incident destabilized them in the morning (the period after their usual daily routine).

Although the cause of the fire outbreak could not be ascertained as at the time of filing this report, it was gathered that the roof of the brothel was blown out by the inferno but the building stood against the fire since it was built with mud bricks.

While lingering in the area for a few minutes, Michael Obasa, our photojournalist who visited the scene of the fore outbreak, reports that some of the prostitutes were lamenting and cursing the cause of the fire which all but set them back in no small way.
“In this time of recession, how can something this terrible happen to us?” one of the prostitutes was quoted to have told one of her regular clients who was asking her to explain what happened.

Another prostitute was also said to have claimed that all her belongings had been destroyed with the flames that ravished their abode unprecedentedly.
The residents of the neighbouring houses were also said to have mocked the commercial sex workers, stating that the inferno served them right because they had constituted a nuisance to the community since they decided to make the place their business district

One of those who spoke to our correspondent anonymously, stated that “I don’t feel any pity for them because this is not the best thing they could have done with their lives.
Our children wake up from time to time to see these people here and there is little or nothing we can do to prevent this from happening. With their recent predicament, it is almost certain that most of them will relocate from that area and probably get something else to do with their lives

Recent reports had it that some prostitutes in Nyanya market area of Abuja have turned the place to brothels where they receive ‘clients’ at night.

This much was revealed by the chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) Abdullahi Candido, who strongly condemned the act by the sex workers.

He explained that the the wrongful use of the place has attracted hawking along the road side, creating an unhygienic environment in the process.
Nairaland / General / Julie Ward Calls For The Release Of Kanu, Supports Biafrans by OfficialArinze(m): 4:08pm On Oct 05, 2016
It seems the agitation for the release of Nnamdi Kanu and the call for an independent Biafra state has caught the eye of some top politicians in Europe as Julie Ward has made a plea to President Muhammadu Buhari.Ward who is a Labour Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the North West of England gave a speech calling for the release of Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB)

Kanu was apprehended by security operatives in October, 2015 and has been in detention since then.

The MEP noted that in spite of court orders asking for his release, Kanu has still been detained.

She said: “Since October 2015, Nnamdi Kanu, a British-Nigerian citizen and leader of the Indigenous People Of Biafra has been unlawfully imprisoned by Nigeria’s Department of State Services despite the fact that all criminal charges against him were dropped and the court order has been issued for him to be released on bail.

Chapter 4 section 39 of the Nigerian constitution says that every person every person shall be entitled to freedom of expression including freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impact ideas and information without interference.”

Ward called on President Muhammadu Buhari to release Kanu and also stop the violence again Biafra people.

I therefore call upon the president of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari to uphold his country’s constitution, to ensure Nnamdi Kanu’s immediate and safe release as well as his co-defendant, Benjamin Madubgwu and James Nwawuisi.

“The Nigerian government must guarantee the freedom of expression of all Nigerian citizens including their right to protest without intimidation and end violence towards those who identify as Biafrans.

“And I call on my colleagues here in the European Parliament to do much more to promote human rights in Nigeria.”
Crime / FG Absence Stalls Nnamdi Kanu's Case At ECOWAS Court by OfficialArinze(m): 3:53pm On Oct 05, 2016
The federal government’s absence at the Economic Community of West African States Court of Justice today, October 5, stalled a case filed by the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra Nnamdi Kanu.

Following his detention in Kuje prison and Nigerian government disobedience of court order, Kanu had asked the regional court to give an order mandating that his detention is unlawful.

He also asked the ECOWAS court to make an order mandating the Nigerian government to release him unconditionally.

However, hearing on the matter which was slated today was stalled following absence of counsels for the defendants.

At the call of the case, the counsel representing Kanu, Ifeanyi Ejiofor told the court that the Nigerian government had submitted an application to be absent for the matter. He also said the application by the counsels of the FG was served on him a few hours before the slated time for hearing.

Ejiofor informed the court the director appointed to represent the FG had another matter at the Federal High Court in Kaduna.

He further asked the court to fine the Nigerian government for absconding from a matter it was fully aware of its hearing.

Having listened to the applicant’s submission, the lead judge over the matter Ifeanyi Nwoke said the excuse given by the Nigerian government was not enough to warrant their absence since the case had been scheduled for today, a long time ago.

Nwoke further adjourned the matter to Tuesday, November 8, for judgement on Kanu’s applications.

Kanu was arrested in Lagos by the Department of State Services (DSS) on October 14, 2015 on his arrival from the United Kingdom.

He was accused of treasonable felony, mismanagement of an unlawful society and concealing goods in a container.
