seunmsg:Of course we all know the outsiders that labelled it an Igbo coup. They are the same people that starved millions of Biafrans to death. You still don't want to point out the fact that it was Igbo people that scuttled Awolowo's coup. How can an Igbo man scuttle an Igbo coup. Awolowo's coup will remain so, thanks to Babangida. The major point is still the fact that Awolowo eliminated all his political opponents and those who were responsible for imprisoning him, in that coup |
seunmsg:Of course Awo did not plan for any killings in Eastern Nigeria because he was in a political alliance with NCNC, and there wouldn't have been any reason killing his political allies. But he made sure to eliminated all his political enemies. Yet again I have to thank Babangida for pointing out that Awolowo was to be the main beneficiary of that coup. Pazienza Bkayy Ekealterego |
richie240:Three million Igbos and other Biafrans died for Awolowo's coup. Your question satisfactorily answered |
seunmsg:As at that time, Zik and Awo were in an alliance, so Awo had no real reason to send his coupists to exterminate Zik. Ademulegun, Unegbe e.t.c were not politicians, so Awo's coupists only killed them as they could stand in the way of the coup being successful. Also those few Yoruba officers could have been Akintola's people, so Awolowo may have marked them down for elimination, as he wouldn't want any pro-Akintola officer raising dust. Awolowo's coupist also killed an Igbo officer named Lt. col Unegbe. I wonder why they did that. Babangida was already an officer in 1966. He even took part in the so-called revenge coup of July 1966, so Babangida was a front row observer of what happen then. Babangida's book is a huge testimony that exonorates Igbos. As a former head of state, he must also be privy to highly classified intelligence reports of the happenings of that period. Awolowo's coup was an evil that befell Nigeria. Pazienza Bkayy Ekealterego |
aribisala0:Brigadier Ogundipe, the highest ranking Yoruba army officer ever, already showed the world what cowardice looked like. Babangida did a good job to expose cowards in Nigeria, and revealing that the 1966 coup was Awolowo's Awolowo who couldn't claim a coup that he masterminded in Jan 1966, but only did so many years afterwards, joined Ogundipe in that cowardice trail. Today Igbos are being vindicated. Kudos to Ojukwu, Efiong and the rest who stood for justice and fought a good fight. |
seunmsg:Those Igbo officers killed all of Awolowo's enemies Those Igbo officers did not kill Awolowo, even though he was a sitting duck in prison in Nigeria |
aswani:Awolowo's coupists did not tell me they did not discuss the coup with him before they carried it out. By the way, Awolowo was then in jail for planning a coup, so planning coups was not new to Awolowo. Awolowo planned a coup when he was free. He would definitely plan a coup, when he was in jail. The whole coup plot was within Awolowo's capabilities |
LegendHero:Regarding the bolded, it was Awo that starved millions of Biafrans to death. He even admitted it by claiming that starvation was an instrument of war which he was happily using to eliminate victims of his 1966 coup. Unfortunately for you Babangida did not validate your last paragraph. Babangida only validated the suspicion that the 1966 coup was Awolowo's coup. |
casualobserver:That was why he planned the coup. He didn't like being in jail. He wanted to take over the leadership of Nigeria rather than sitting in jail. I hope this makes sense now |
aswani:As regards the bolded, that's because the idiot in Finland is more powerful than Yorubas, Hausas and Fulanis combined. Regarding your last paragraph, Awolowo was imprisoned in the eastern region, so I greatly suspect that he leaked his coup to Okpara and Azikiwe who were from the eastern region. |
aribisala0:To the best of my knowledge, Adaka Boro and Edwin Clark who remain the greatest leaders of the Ijaw nation, fought against Igbos/Biafra. Ken Saro Wiwa, the greatest Ogoni leader also fought against Biafra. It was Igbo properties in PH that was seized. Not Ijaw or Ibibio properties. So Igbos have every right to use the word BIAFRA, as synonymous to the nation that Igbos belong in. It is left for the other groups to claim it. As I am an Igbo, I claim the word BIAFRA for the Igbos. But as an Igbo, I cannot claim the word for Ijaw of Ibibio people. It is only Ijaw and Ibibio people that can claim it, and when they claim it, no one will have the power to deny them the use of that word. So I repeat again, that Igbos fought the whole of Nigeria, something that Yorubas, Hausas, Fulanis can never do. The word BIAFRA, applies to all the ethnic groups of the old eastern region |
Beautifulday:Awolowo maybe |
Ojuntana:Don't forget an Igbo man imported the rat poison he drank as his last meal ![]() |
aswani:Babangida was not the first person that stated that Awolowo was to be the chief beneficiary of that coup. Other senior coup insiders have made the same allegation. Babangida was just the last person to accurately repeat that allegation. I also doubt whether Babangida alleged that the July coup was not a northern coup, so if he took part in it, I won't be surprised that he killed innocent Igbos. The major point is that Awolowo was the main reason those innocent Igbos were killed. He doubled down on this move by making starvation an instrument of war, which he gleefully used to try exterminate the Igbos. As though that wasn't enough, he was the chief architect of giving Igbos 20 pounds in exchange for whatever thousands they may have in the banks. Basically, with Babangida's book, a clearer picture is being drawn, of Awolowo and his wickedness |
aswani:You are obviously writing from your refugee camp in Benin republic. Babangida correctly named the person who was to benefit from the 1966 coup, and you are here foaming in the mouth. Thank God Babangida's book will go quite far and a lot of people will read it to make sense of what has been happening in Nigeria |
aswani:Awo was more an opponent of Balewa than he was of Zik. Balewa was the prime minister of the regime that prosecuted and imprisoned Awolowo. Awo's party was in alliance with Zik's party when the coup took place, so you cannot bring that issue up. A major pointer though, was the fact that Awo's coupists also killed Akintola, who was a major opponent of Awolowo in Western Nigeria. |
aswani:I really have to thank Babangida for his discoveries on the Yoruba. I believe it was Babangida that introduced the saying that IF YOU ARE SLEEPING AND SOMEONE WOKE YOU UP TO TELL YOU THAT YORUBAS ARE REVOLTING, JUST GET BACK TO SLEEP AND SLEEP SOUNDLY. The significance of this saying being that Yorubas are known cowards. We thank Babangida was seeing what Igbos are seeing. |
Igbos fought the whole of Nigeria, a feat that Fulanis, Hausas or Yorubas can never ever do. So that should dispel any suspicions of Igbo cowardice. However I am beginning to think that the January 1966 coup was Awolowo's coup. The main reason being that all those that were killed were Awolowo's political opponents. He allegedly even arranged for the killing of his brother Akintola, just because Akintola had already subdued him in Western Nigeria. Sardauna and Balewa were responsible for imprisoning Awolowo. Of course they had to go. Azikiwe, Tarka, Okpara had no hand in the imprisonment of Awolowo, which was why they were not eliminated by Awolowo's coupists |
NaijaCowFarm:Not just that. Why were all the civilians that were killed in that coup, Awolowo's opponents, including his opponent in Western Nigeria? |
aswani:It is not president Tinubu's coup. In that coup, all the civilians that were eliminated were staunch opponents of Awolowo. Even Awolowo's opponent in Yorubaland was eliminated, and all his northern opponents that he must have been blaming for his incarcerations. Awolowo definitely did not blame Michael Okpara, Azikiwe and Joseph Tarka for his imprisonment and they were all spared. Igbo people are known for their likeliness to speak against injustice, which is why it's not a surprise that they took part in that coup. Yoruba people are not really known for being brave, which is why most of the deadly acts of that coup were carried out by troops led by brave Igbo soldiers. Legendhero |

Shivisee1:I'm a pure Igbo and witt Babangida's biography, I can safely say the coup was Awolowo's |
LegendHero:Awoloowo the chief beneficiary spared, using prison as his cover to remove every suspicion from himself. Typical coward. Thank God Babangida has helped to shed light on this episode, as a major actor in that era |
LegendHero:Awolowo, the alleged coup beneficiary spared |
Ozigbo just kissed his political career in Anambra state good bye. What a huge shame |
CoronaVirusPro:He is getting rid of LGBTQ-supporting prosecutors. Hopefully this will also rid the US system of Islamic terrorist supporting, Bokoharam supporting prosecutors. I am happy with the mass sack |
Mvnster:They are no living in peace in Yorubaland, especially as they are being restricted from carrying out their civic rights of voting in elections in the SW, combined with moves by LSG to demolish Igbo properties in Lagos. Igbos have also not forgotten that it's their turn to provide the presidency for Nigeria, but that Yoruba tribalists teamed up with the north to ensure a Yoruba drug dealer is rigged in. History is beginning to pile up in ways that will make it impossible for Igbos and Yorubas to be in the same country. |
Nwokem do your job and stop all these talking |
Typical Yoruba economic policy. If this idiot is not careful, Diasporans may mobilise touts to burn down this idiot's properties in Nigeria. |
LegendHero:Just be kidding yourself. Why haven't you asked yourself how come Igbo films are leading on Youtube and AfricaMagic EPIC channel? What it means is that Igbo films have huge potentials, which will start showing in a huge way in a few months time. I know things you don't know about the industry. Let's leave it at that. |
How come Netflix is about to leave Nigeria? Will the departure of Netflix seriously affect Yoruba films which have massively benefitted from Netflix sponsorship due to the Lagos effect, to the detriment of other geopolitical zones that are too further afield from the Lagos-Netflix ecosystem. This your chest-beating is coming at the wrong time ooh. You may regret it in a matter of months. In a few months time, you may be replacing Yoruba with Nigeria, in your attempt to hide your nepotism Armaggedon, LegendHero |
