Foremost Nigerian stand-up comedian and actor, Atunyota Alleluya Akpobome, widely known as Ali Baba recently charged President Muhammad Buhari and Nigerians to be futuristic in their dreams. The ace comedian who took to his social media page said the present administration needs to be proactive in creating the future for the next generation. Buhari needs to act now. He must start creating the future, developing our infrastructures and prepare them for the next generation,” he posted. The Eiffel Tower was built in the 1800s. Today, that structure is the centre of the economy of Paris. The Pyramids built in the days of Moses, still feed Egypt. The Walls of China. The leaning Tower of Pissa. The Ruins of Rome… What structures do we have, to drive economic development and help trigger different dreams. Where can you see those iconic landmarks in Nigeria? How have their values been maximized? Visit our Museums. Yet we want the artefacts taken away, that are getting the best treatment, to be returned. Laughable.” The 54 years old comedians, however described the present situation of the country as ‘hand to mouth,” “We live from hand to mouth. We sell the oil. Spend it. Drill for more oil. Spend it. And the fraction we even spend is small. The rest of the money stolen. We have been stolen blind. And the thieves are living large amongst us. And we can see them but can’t make them face the music.” Ali Baba who after completing his academic degree in 1990, relocated to Lagos to develop his comedic talent said he still think about how people tried to discouraged him when he started doing stand-up comedy in 1988. In 1988, when I started doing standup comedy, there were many who told me that much. My father disowned me. His reason? He could not see any future in what I did. Many people are limited by history of things and what they already know. Those who create the future get triggered by things that can be seen in the future. I look back now and think about how many people tried to discourage me. Those who thought the ladder to success, was exclusively by climbing as a Doctor, Lawyer, Engineer, Banker, Architect, Accountant, Civil Servant… Today, there are comedians who are worth 3 billion (more or less) in assets and liquid cash. There are comedians, whose social impact and economic value has empowered many who are in those core walks of life mentioned above. A Ugandan court on Tuesday charged pop star turned leading opposition figure, Bobi Wine, with "annoying" President Yoweri Museveni. Wine, who entered parliament in 2017, has emerged as a leading critic of Museveni - who has been in power for over three decades - and has faced multiple detentions while authorities have frustrated his efforts to perform. He announced last month that he would take on Museveni in 2021 national elections. "This government of President Museveni is in panic mode. At first it was treason and now it is annoying president Museveni. Who on earth can't be annoyed?" Wine told AFP. "It is a ridiculous charge and am ready to challenge it in court," he said. General Ibrahim Babangida, a former military head of state has described Nigeria as complex and a difficult entity to manage. Babangida spoke from his residence in Minna when the leadership of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, minority caucus of the House of Representatives, led by Ndudi Elumelu, paid him a visit. Consequently, he called on the legislators to perform their responsibilities honourably and diligently to make the country one entity. Babangida, who said he had been following recent developments in the country, noted: I am passionate in observing what is going on in the country; I have developed lots of interest in the ongoing across the country and I think the leadership of the House of Representatives, the speaker, the opposition leadership and everyone are all doing well. You represent the people and it is what the people wish that you take up. I want to commend you for doing your job honourably and I urge you not to give up. The country is complex and difficult because in Nigeria, there are as many opinions as there are the number of people in the country. Nigeria is a very vibrant society and what is important is the determination to carry on and you have to remain very resilient in everything you do for the benefit of the country.” Babangida assured the lawmakers of his support where necessary, saying: “We are all together for the progress of the country and now that you have succeeded in your elections, it is now time for you to settle down to do a lot of good work for your constituency and for the country.’’ Members on the entourage of the minority leader include the Minority Whip, Gibbion Gwari and Deputy Minority Whip, Adekoya Adesegun. Others are Efe Afe, Kpam Jimin Sokpo, Robert Tyough, Soyinka Anjola, Femi Bamishele, Benjamin Mzondu and Samuel Onuigbo. The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has urged the public to be wary of attempts to drag the corporation into politics in the guise of requests for information under the Freedom of Information law. The Group Managing Director of the Corporation disclosed this in a statement signed by Ndu Ughamadu, the spokesman for the corporation, in Abuja on Tuesday. Kyari made the call during a courtesy visit by the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, Waziri Adio, to the NNPC Towers. He said that though the corporation was committed to transparency and accountability to the Nigerian people, a line must be drawn between genuine requests for information and malicious attempts to drag it into politics. He said: “As you are aware, sometimes the requests are brazenly malicious, and they are laden with political undertones. “NNPC finds it difficult to respond to such requests because it is mindful of falling into the trap of being drawn into politics or maligning others.” He added that in keeping with its commitment to be accountable and transparent, the corporation would publish its audited accounts soon. On the disclosure of contracts and contractors as requested by the NEITI boss, he said the biggest contracts in the corporation’s portfolio currently was the products supply contracts under the Direct Sales Direct Purchase scheme. He noted that details of the contracts and the contractors would also be made public within this month. He promised to make the monthly financial and operations reports more accessible by publishing the soft copies of the reports from January to May. In his remarks, Adio, congratulated Kyari on his appointment, saying: “This is a big opportunity you have been given to shape the direction of this country in a positive way and I believe you have the capacity to do that. He said he was particularly impressed with the corporation’s robust deployment of modern information and communication platforms, especially the website, which he noted could be used as a transparency tool through pro-active disclosures. He said NEITI would remain committed to working with the NNPC because of the GMD’s track record of integrity. He said: “The GMD is somebody we can vouch for, he is a transparency champion and I can’t remember any GMD’s appointment that has elicited as much goodwill as your appointment has generated” Source; https://maniagist.com/2019/08/07/dont-drag-nnpc-to-politics-under-freedom-of-information-law-kyari-warns/

GOVERNOR Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State has said his successor must be principled, bold and courageous enough to protect the collective interests of the Ijaw nation at all times. Dickson Dickson, who stated this while fielding questions during a live media chat in Yenagoa, noted that in view of the challenges facing the state, Bayelsa cannot afford to have a governor who cannot defend Ijaw interest. He said: “The next governor of the Ijaw nation must be courageous, he must be ready to defend the Ijaw nation at all times. He must not be the errand boy of any ethnic group. I will be sad to see the governor of Bayelsa playing just politics, without being able to take a decisive position on issues. “The shoes I am leaving behind are very big. Posterity will judge. Only very few of the people who come to talk to me have the interest of the state at heart. There is no free money to give anybody in Bayelsa. Don’t kill for anybody, none has the power to make you a billionaire. Herdsmen want N30m for 3 ladies kidnapped on Lagos-Benin Road(Opens in a new browser tab) “Our people are oppressed. We have a lot of stories to tell Nigerians. When it comes to speaking for the Ijaw nation, I have not been found wanting. I want that tradition to continue. I want my people to be safe.
