Politics › Uzodimma Joins Senate Race, May Resign As Governor by ogododo(op): 7:06am On May 11 |
Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has declared his interest to contest for the Imo West Senatorial District seat in 2027.
Mr Uzodimma, who is serving his second term as governor, announced this in a post on his X handle on Sunday. “My dear people of Imo West Senatorial District have once again called upon me to serve, and I have accepted this noble call with utmost humility, sincerity of purpose, and unwavering commitment to the collective advancement of our people,” he said.
The governor said in furtherance of the call to serve, he has presented himself before the leadership of his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), and the Screening Committee for the National Assembly Primary Election.
“During the engagement, I reaffirmed that the Senatorial seat I seek to occupy belongs first and foremost to our great party, while I remain only a loyal and dedicated candidate entrusted with the responsibility of projecting and advancing the ideals, vision, and aspirations of the APC to the very best of my ability,” he said.
Mr Uzodimma earlier represented the district in the Senate from 6 June 2011 to 9 June 2019.
The governor said that his latest move to represent the district for the third time was “inspired by the desire to consolidate on the gains of the Renewed Hope administration of President Bola Tinubu, through quality representation, effective legislation, enhanced development, and sustainable progress for our people and our nation.”
Governorship seat vs Senate seat
Mr Uzodimma’s entry into the Senate race comes two years and four months after his inauguration for his second term of four years in office as governor.
He became governor of Imo State in 2020 after the Supreme Court nullified the election of the then-governor, Emeka Ihedioha, and declared Mr Uzodimma, who came fourth in the 2019 election, as the validly elected governor of the state.
His second term in office will elapse by January 2028. Meanwhile, the next Senate is expected to be inaugurated in June 2027.
Apart from Mr Uzodimma, a former governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, and a former senator, Osita Izunaso, are also seeking the APC ticket to represent the district in the Senate.
While Mr Okorocha represented the district from 2019 to 2023, Mr Izunaso is the incumbent senator for the district.
The trio are members of the APC.
Looming resignation
Multiple sources, in April, claimed that Mr Uzodimma had perfected plans to resign his position as governor to pursue his senatorial ambition.
The sources said the governor had struck a deal with his deputy, Chinyere Ekomaru, to willingly resign her position which will pave the way for the appointment of a new deputy governor.
According to the alleged plot, the new deputy governor would serve as a “placeholder governor” in the event that he resigns to contest for Senate.
“The governor is actually fighting to be the Senate President. He’s banking on Tinubu to help secure the (Senate President) position,” one of the sources said.
But Mrs Ekomaru’s office, in early May, refuted claims that she had resigned from her position, describing them as false and misleading.
“This claim, as at this moment and the time it was trended, is entirely untrue and should be disregarded in its entirety,” the statement said, suggesting that the resignation could still happen in the nearest future.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the Deputy Governor of Imo State, Chinyere Ekomaru, is currently engaged in official duties as the number two citizen of this great state and continues to serve the state in her capacity as deputy governor,” the statement added.

Politics › 2027: Jonathan To Run On PDP Platform by ogododo(op): 9:15pm On May 10 |
Abuja: Former President Goodluck Jonthan will attempt to return to the presidency using the Peoples Democratic Party as the platform to actualize his renewed presidential ambition, Vanguard gathered authoritatively on Sunday. A top official in the Jonathan’s team confirmed to Vanguard on Sunday that the decision to use the PDP followed extensive deliberation over where his chances were brighter in returning to power in order to provide quality leadership to the country amid growing hardship and poverty. The confirmation of PDP as the channel through which Jonathn hopes to use to and return to power, immediately opened a floodgate of struggle by entities believed to be pushing him to contest, to jostle for the purchase of his nomination form, which the factionalised party has pegged at N100 million. The top official, who spoke to Vanguard in confidence, said that the groups competing to purchase the nomination form for Jonathan were aware that the deadline for the submission of the form ends on Tuesday this week and that they were determined to get the form for him. The source said that a notable group, which calls itself, the Goodluckan Movement, made of Nigerians in the diaspora is claiming the right to obtain the form for him, arguing that the movement is more representative of Nigerians across the world than the northern groups jostling for it. The official listed some of the groups in the front line to obtain the forms for the former president include the Coalition for Jonathan, which has twice mobilized thousands of youths to rally in his office and urged him to pick a nomination form and run, the Goodies Movement, an online support group for Goodluck Jonathan and the The New Nigeria, TNN – a mass based movement with millions of members mostly in northern Nigeria. Others are, the Almajiri Network, Arewa for Good Governance, the Northern Youth Alliance for Good Governance, Northern Coalition for Goodluck Jonathan, the Arewa for Better Government and the North Youth Progressive Movement. The official claimed that each of the Jonathan support groups has pledged to raise the 100m and purchase the form for him. Vanguard learned that although the former president merely told the groups the crowd that beckoned on him to run in 2027 that he would consult widely before taking a final decision on the matter, Jonthan had since made up his mind to run, hoping to convince Nigerians to re-elect him to revamp the economy and reduce the level of hardship in the land. The leader of the Jonathan support group, Dr. Tom Ohikere, had urged him to “immediately pick a presidential nomination form of any party of your choice to contest the elections”. Following the calls by groups on Jonathan to run, there had been concerns as to which party platform he would use to pursue his ambition, a development which immediately prompted the Turaki-led PDP to issue a statement confirming he had fulfilled the necessary conditions to fly the party’s flag. The PDP spokesman, Barrister Ini Ememobong, confirmed that Dr. Jonathan had earlier in the year fulfilled his online registration with the PDP and dispelled the swirling rumours of his political party membership as no denial has come from his media team or any of his close associates. It will be recalled that in 2022, a Northern almajiri group obtained a 100m APC form for President Goodluck Jonathan, which made the headlines, but which he later disowned and the form was never submitted. But as an indication of his seriousness to run in 2027, Jonathan has approached a Federal High court in Abuja to challenge a lawyer who asked the court to bar him from running again, claiming that he had since served two terms. The case will determine whether Jonathan has any chance of challenging the incumbent and returning to Aso Rock. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2026/05/2027-jonathan-to-run-on-pdp-platform/ |

Politics › Sultan: Those Who Kill People While Shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ Will Go To Hell by ogododo(op): 7:52am On May 07 |
We’re Not Planning To Wipe Out Christians — Sultan
•Says those who kill innocent people while shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ will go to hell
•CAN pushes religious literacy as key to national cohesion
ABUJA— The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III, yesterday pushed back against fears of a religious agenda in Nigeria, declaring that Muslims were not planning to wipe out Christians, as religious and government leaders called for a reset in how the country understands its conflicts.
According to him, much of the violence often described as religious is being misunderstood, deepening suspicion and mistrust.
The remarks came at the first triannual meeting of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council, NIREC, in Abuja, where the Sultan, who co-chairs the council, spoke alongside President of Christian Association of Nigeria, Daniel Okoh, and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.
Leaders said the way forward laid in dialogue, trust and a stronger push for religious literacy.
The Sultan said: “Today, as I stand here, I want to affirm that Muslims are not in a hurry and are not planning anything like decimating the population of Christians in Nigeria.
“We are not in any position whatsoever to remove Christians from Nigeria. No, it is not possible.’’
He stressed that both faiths must coexist in an environment of stability, respect and understanding of one another, and urged Nigerians to rethink how insecurity was described, even as he warned against attaching religion to criminal acts.
“Let us get the narrative right, it is not about religion. Let us stop bringing religion into it. Let us call them what they are, criminals, not Muslim criminals, not Muslim terrorists, not Muslim bandits. Even if someone claims to be Muslim, what they do goes against Islam,’’ the Sultan said.
Linking the problem to ignorance, he warned against false claims of religious authority, adding that “the fact that you understand Arabic does not make you a Sheikh. Arabic is just a language. So literacy is very important.’’
The Sultan advocated return to dialogue repeatedly, describing it as the only workable path.
He said further: “In NIREC, we believe in dialogue. No matter how bad things are, we believe in dialogue. When talking, you need to understand one another, not just tolerate.
“If you do not believe me, what else can you do? You cannot open my heart to see what is inside. We must trust one another.”
On those who carry out violence in the name of religion, he said: “Somebody can go to the market, blows his or herself up, kill people and shout ‘Allahu Akbar’. Yes, God is great, but you are going to hell. They will suffer for taking innocent lives.’’
Earlier in his remarks, CAN President, Daniel Okoh, framed the conversation around education and understanding, warning against reducing religion to stereotypes.
“Religious literacy is not merely the academic understanding of doctrines or rituals. It is the cultivation of awareness, sensitivity and respect for the beliefs and practices of others,” Archbishop Okoh said.
While noting that many tensions were wrongly labelled, the CAN president said: “Across various parts of our nation, we continue to witness tensions that are sometimes framed along religious lines, even when their root causes may be social, economic, or political.’
The Christian leader stated that NIREC had continued to demonstrate the possibility of cooperation across faith lines.
“Through NIREC, we have demonstrated that despite our religious differences, we share common values of peace, justice, dignity of human life, and the well-being of our nation,” Archbishop Okoh said.
In his remarks, the SGF, George Akume, linked understanding directly to national stability.
“Where there is ignorance, suspicion can take root. Where there is misunderstanding, conflict can arise. But where there is knowledge and empathy, trust can flourish,” George Akume said.
While warning against divisive narratives, he called for stronger institutional support, particularly through education.
He said: “Education plays a crucial role… Schools, universities, and community institutions must prioritise inclusive and accurate teaching about religions and worldviews. We must challenge our assumptions and resist narratives that seek to divide us.’’
On security and education, he added: “We must do everything as a government to ensure that the terrorists who kidnap children who are willing to study must come to an end.” https://www.vanguardngr.com/2026/05/were-not-planning-to-wipe-out-christians-sultan/

Politics › David Mark Meets Ex-ADC Lawmakers After Defections In National Assembly by ogododo(op): 7:52pm On May 06 |
The national chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), David Mark, has held a crucial meeting with representatives of the party’s former federal lawmakers following a wave of defections in the National Assembly.
On Tuesday, 17 members of the House of Representatives left the ADC and joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). Their defection letters were read during plenary by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu.
The lawmakers came from different constituencies across the country, including Kano, Anambra, Lagos, Edo and Rivers States.
Another lawmaker, Leke Abejide from Kogi, also left the ADC but moved to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Many of the lawmakers said they left due to leadership problems and legal disputes within the party.
In a post on X, Kola Ologbondiyan, Mark’s technical adviser on strategic communication, confirmed the meeting in Abuja.
“The representatives of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) former Federal Lawmakers in a crucial meeting with the party’s National Chairman, Senator David Mark, at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja, Wednesday,” he wrote.
He did not provide details of what was discussed at the meeting, and the party’s spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, has yet to release an official statement. https://dailypost.ng/2026/05/06/david-mark-meets-ex-adc-lawmakers-after-defections-in-national-assembly/

Politics › Wike To Pastor Serah Omaku: Jabi Lake Takeover Stands Even If God Comes Down by ogododo(op): 3:19pm On May 06 |
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has defended the intervention at Jabi Lake, a popular recreation park in Abuja, ordering a crackdown on substandard developments around the park.
The Minister said this in his reaction to the appeal of Rev Serah Omaku, Senior Pastor of Family Worship Centre, Abuja.
Daily Trust had reported how the preacher knelt on the pulpit, pleading with Wike not to repossess the land.
A video of the Pastor’s appeal went viral on social media.
But speaking during a media chat in Abuja on Wednesday, Wike dismissed the Pastor’s concerns, insisting that enforcement action at Jabi Lake was guided by law, not sentiment.
“You talk about the woman kneeling down and begging. I’m not carried away by such emotions. Begging to do what? Who owns Jabi Lake? How does it become your own? First of all, I came on board; that place was given to a company that said they wanted to turn it into an entertainment place, but they have turned it into shanties.”
“One of these days I went there and said, ‘This can’t be; there is a hotel, and who would come to stay in that hotel when there are shanties all over?’ You don’t know if there are criminals.”
He stated that the allocation had been revoked and would be reassigned to investors with the capacity to develop the site, adding that strict conditions would guide the new arrangement.
“You cannot allocate land and leave it for that long with nothing to show. We revoked it. Now we want to give it to people who are ready to develop it,” Wike said.
“We will reallocate the land with clear conditions. If there is no development within the specified time, we will take it back.
“To the woman who was crying, if she likes, let her call God to come down. What is my business? How does Jabi become hers? Is it an individual or government property? We are trying to make sure investors develop this land for the interest of all of us.”
Wike said several plots around the lake, initially allocated for high-end developments, had remained undeveloped for over a decade and had since deteriorated into makeshift settlements.
The minister confirmed that the FCT Administration had begun revoking such allocations, signalling a tougher stance against land speculation in the capital city.
“You must sign to develop within a given period. If you fail, the land returns to government. It is as simple as that,” he added.
Wike, however, rejected suggestions that the exercise is intended to restrict public access to the lake, clarifying that the focus is on reclaiming misused or abandoned land.
“We are not taking anything from the public. We are reclaiming land from those who failed to do what they were supposed to do or who converted it to unauthorised uses,” he said.
He also decried the distortion of approved land use, citing instances where recreational spaces were converted without authorisation. https://dailytrust.com/wike-to-pastor-jabi-lake-takeover-stands-even-if-god-comes-down/Previous thread https://www.nairaland.com/8665372/abuja-pastor-omakwu-kneels-begs

Politics › Maybe Subsidies Should Be Returned by ogododo(op): 6:50am On May 06 |
Ordinarily, no one should ask President Bola Tinubu to reverse the removal of subsidies from petrol, electricity and foreign exchange just because it has caused a hike in the cost of living of rich and poor Nigerians, whose personal finances and well-being have practically become train wrecks of sorts. But maybe the President and his aides, who have been asking the media to pay more attention to how state governors spend the windfall they now receive from the Federal Accounts Allocation Committee after the removal of the subsidies, should take a second look at their economic policies. The policies seem to be working against the welfare of the people, which Section 14(b) of the Nigerian Constitution says is the government’s number one assignment toward Nigerians, who have a right to live a good life. The Preamble of Nigeria’s Constitution promises the promotion of “good government and welfare of all persons in our country…” Members of the President’s Economic Management Team and his media aides have become echo chambers of his call for the media to (probably give the Federal Government a break and) pay more judicious attention to the spending habits of the governors, some of whom are splurging in opulence that they did not work for. So This Happened (215) Reviews Death Of Lagos Medical Doctor, Others | Punch Many of the governors do not even bother to find ways to raise the Internally Generated Revenue of their states anymore; they wait, like birds of prey, for the dole that is sure to come to them from the FAAC every month. Their receipts from the Federation Account have become so generous, it’s as if their exchequers have become a purse of royalty whose umbilical cord is tied to the God that the Israelis call El Shaddai, the All-Sufficient God. Perhaps the only advantage that Nigerians now benefit from money saved from the subsidies is that the salaries of government workers have been paid more regularly. Yet there are reports of states where the salaries of workers are still delayed, unpaid or not paid in full. There is no doubt that some state governors are showing traits of rich people with the mentality of the poor, those that the French describe with the derogatory term, nouveaux riche, people who have recently acquired wealth and display it in the most ostentatious, tasteless and crass manner. Besides spending so much on their peccadillos, they also keep looking for white elephant projects to spend the “excess” money they are receiving on. Of course, they have constructed new roads and sometimes (unnecessary) flyovers, which must at least be acknowledged and commended. But they need to add other infrastructure, like electricity, petroleum refineries, and introduce economic policies to reverse the economic regression that Nigerians are enduring nowadays. Reports from Business Insider Africa indicate that, while its 2022 reports put the number of Nigerians who lived below the $2 per day poverty line at 70 million, the data for the 2025-2026 period show a runaway 130 to 140 million. One cannot help but draw attention to a state that has an airport, which receives sparse air passengers from Abuja or Lagos once in a while, because there is hardly any business that anyone from other parts of Nigeria has to do in that state. A Nigerian airport that does not receive passengers from Abuja, the Federal Capital City, or Lagos, the economic hub of Nigeria, except through combined flights or chartered flights by governors, a few business executives, and Nigeria’s equivalent of the jet set, is not yet ready for business. The “me-too” attitude that led to such white elephant projects betrays governments that did not get their economics right. Though some state governors still hold on to the funds of their local government authorities, despite the landmark judgment of the Supreme Court of Nigeria that ordered that monies due to LGAs from the FAAC should be remitted promptly, there is no doubt that LGA revenues have also increased tremendously. Startup leaders meet to address funding challenges Opposition rift widens over sole presidential ticket But, like the state governments that have practically gone rogue with “too much money” in their exchequers, the officials of the LGAs also seem to be doing either of two things: wasting the money on needless ventures or diverting the money into their pockets, sometimes via the opaque special purpose vehicle called security vote. But, like the state governments that have practically gone rogue with “too much money” in their exchequers, the officials of the LGAs also seem to be doing either of two things: wasting the money on needless ventures or diverting the money into their pockets, sometimes via the opaque special purpose vehicle called security vote. It is increasingly looking as if the number of Japanese-built SUVs in Nigeria is vastly more than the number in Japan, where it is manufactured. This is reminiscent of the 1960s and 1970s, when Peugeot vehicles in Nigeria were far in excess of the number in France. Even if it appears to be a repetition, it is important to reiterate that, because governance is about “good government and welfare of Nigerians, as explained in the Preamble to the Constitution, no effort must be spared to ensure that all Nigerians, and not only those in government, should feel the impact of the increase in money that is now available to the states. Though some cynics have described this as “stomach infrastructure,” one is tempted to argue that if the subsidy is returned, maybe Nigerians will feel the direct impact in the (possible) reduction in the cost of petroleum products, electricity, foodstuffs, building materials, household goods and other strategic consumer goods. This argument is based on what seems to be the reality of the higher cost of living that the removal of the subsidies has plunged Nigerians into, and the obvious failure of many state governors who cannot use their increased revenues to plug the holes. If the removal of the subsidies will not reflect on the lives of Nigerians, maybe the government should review the policy. This argument should not be regarded as frivolous, because the conduct of many state governors, who have become beneficiaries of the free money that is coming after the removal of subsidies, does not reflect state actors who want the dividends of democracy to go round. It should not be regarded as an act of cowardice or surrender if the government reverses a policy that is not quite working as intended, or is willfully sabotaged by governors who should partner with the Federal Government to deliver good governance. Someone argues that because governance, rule of law and law enforcement are weak and inconsistent in Nigeria, by the choice of the leadership, the mismanagement, or reprehensible pilfering, of public funds went up by fivefold! If all state governments that receive 26.72 per cent of the national revenue, all LGAs that get 20.60 per cent, and all the petroleum-producing states that receive an additional 13 per cent as a matter of statutory right, fritter it all on wasteful projects, it might just be better to hand the money directly to Nigerians as subsidies, because they know where their shoes pinch. Of course, the return of subsidies would upset the economic applecart that President Tinubu is precariously setting up, inconsolably upset the Bretton Woods institutions, and reverse the current revenue allocation formula that already favours the Federal Government. But if President Tinubu cannot find a way to make the profligate governors spend their increased revenue appropriately, he may need to find a way to wrest the excess money from their hands and hand it over to the people. There is no gainsaying that governments that cannot enhance the welfare of their people have failed ab initio. https://punchng.com/maybe-subsidies-should-be-returned/ |

Politics › ADC Coalition ‘Train’ Still Moving Despite Obi, Others’ Exit — Paul Ibe by ogododo(op): 6:35pm On May 03 |
A former media aide to ex- Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, Paul Ibe, has said the coalition anchored on the African Democratic Congress remains on track despite the exit of key figures, including former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi.
Ibe made this known in a statement issued on Sunday, following Obi’s resignation from the party, insisting that the coalition continues to gain momentum ahead of its planned primary elections.
Obi had joined forces with Atiku Abubakar, former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi and others in July 2025 to adopt the ADC as a coalition platform aimed at challenging President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election.
After formally becoming a member on January 1, 2026, Obi announced his exit on Sunday, May 3, citing alleged external interference, internal divisions and growing mistrust within the party.
Reacting, Ibe said the coalition was not shaken by the development and wished Obi and other defectors well.
He stressed that their departure had not slowed the movement, noting that more Nigerians were still aligning with the ADC.
“The coalition train is still on course. Sadly, some persons have gotten off at what they perceived to be their station. The train keeps moving and picking more passengers along its way. We wish them well.
“Presently, our preoccupation is working with other stakeholders of the ADC to successfully deliver on the party’s primary election timetable within a short period,” he said.
PUNCH Online reports that the African Democratic Congress emerged as a rallying platform for opposition figures seeking to build a formidable alliance ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The coalition drive intensified in mid-2025 when prominent politicians, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi, aligned under the ADC to challenge the dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress.
The move was widely seen as an attempt to consolidate opposition strength following the fragmented outcomes of previous elections, particularly the 2023 presidential poll, where divided opposition votes were considered a key factor in President Bola Tinubu’s victory.
Peter Obi formally joined the ADC on January 1, 2026, after months of speculation about his political future outside his former party. His entry was initially perceived as a boost to the coalition’s credibility, given his strong support base, especially among young and urban voters.
However, internal tensions soon surfaced within the coalition, with reports of disagreements over leadership structure, power-sharing arrangements, and concerns about external influence. These issues culminated in Obi’s resignation on May 3, 2026, barely four months after officially joining the party.
His exit has raised fresh questions about the cohesion and sustainability of the opposition alliance, even as ADC leaders insist that the coalition remains intact and continues to attract new members ahead of its primaries.

PoliticsADC Tables Fresh Request Before INEC, Set To Release TimetablePublished May 2, 2026 at 5:30 AMBy George Oshogwe Ogbolu Share: Google NewsFollow Us on Google ADC leaders during a world press conference held on Thursday, 2nd, April, 2026 The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to grant it additional time to conduct its primary elections. The party said it would release its primaries timetable within the week despite ongoing challenges. The National Organising Secretary of the party, Chinedu Idigo, made the appeal in an interview with Leadership on Friday in Abuja. He explained that prolonged internal crises and legal disputes disrupted the party’s schedule, leaving limited time for preparations. “The prolonged legal battle cost us valuable time. It is only fair that INEC provides a window for the ADC to conduct credible primaries for all aspirants,” he said. Despite the setbacks, Idigo said the party is pushing ahead with its internal processes. “We are working round the clock, and we will be releasing our primary timetable within the week,” he added. The ADC urged INEC to ensure fairness in the electoral process by accommodating parties affected by unforeseen circumstances. According to Idigo, the commission has a responsibility to create a level playing field for all political parties. The party also disclosed that it has recorded significant growth, with over four million Nigerians registered through its online membership platform. “As it stands today, the ADC is fast becoming one of the largest political platforms in Nigeria’s democratic history,” he said. Idigo reaffirmed the party’s determination to unseat the All Progressives Congress (APC) in future elections. “We are fully prepared to dislodge the APC, regardless of whatever stumbling blocks may be placed on our path to victory,” he stated. He also described the recent Supreme Court judgment on the party’s leadership as a major relief, noting that it has strengthened the ADC’s stability. “We will continue to pursue policies that serve the best interests of Nigerians and work towards building a just and egalitarian society,” Idigo said. https://www./2026/05/02/adc-tables-fresh-request-before-inec-set-to-release-timetable/? |

Politics › Sitting Rep Loses Return Ticket As Mangal’s Son Emerges APC Consensus Candidate by ogododo(op): 1:22pm On May 01 |
Hon. Sani Aliyu Danlami, a member of the House of Representatives, has lost his bid to secure the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket for the 2027 election in Katsina Central Federal Constituency. Danlami, who is currently serving his second term at the Green Chamber, was edged out after days of intense consultations among party stakeholders and power brokers. The stakeholders settled for Abba Mangal, one of the sons of billionaire businessman, Dahiru Mangal, as the party’s flag bearer. The decision marks a significant political shift in the constituency, given Danlami’s incumbency and grassroots structure. The emergence of the younger Mangal, a legal practitioner, has set tongues wagging as he did not publicly declare interest in the race. Danlami has accepted the outcome of the consensus process and called on his supporters to remain calm and law-abiding. In a statement, he urged party faithful to shun violence and prioritize peace and unity, stressing the importance of maintaining stability within the state and the party. However, sources familiar with the negotiations revealed that the consensus process spanned two days, from Tuesday to Thursday, and involved multiple rounds of deliberations among aspirants and their backers. The contest was said to be highly competitive, with several notable figures lobbying vigorously for the ticket. It was also revealed that among those who jostled for the position were Lawal Amadu Joka, a former Aide-de-Camp to ex-governor Aminu Bello Masari; Haruna Maiwada; Ibrahim Ali Guguwa; Sani Danlami; Hon. Abdurashid Abba Dahiru Mangal is very influential in Katsina’s political landscape. His role in shaping electoral outcomes in the state dates back over two decades, notably his support for the late former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s successful re-election as governor in 2003. Since then, Mangal is believed to have played a pivotal role in determining key political appointments and elective positions across the state. However, this development marks the first time a member of his immediate family has emerged as a frontline candidate for elective office. As preparations for the polls intensify, attention will now shift to how aggrieved aspirants and their supporters align with the party’s decision, and whether the APC can maintain cohesion in Katsina going forward. https://dailytrust.com/breaking-sitting-rep-loses-return-ticket-as-mangals-son-emerges-apc-consensus-candidate/ |

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has warned Nigerians against celebrating too early, despite the Supreme Court’s affirmation of Senator David Mark as leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), saying the real political battle still lies ahead. The message marks a shift from legal victory to political mobilisation, as the opposition moves to convert courtroom success into momentum ahead of the 2027 elections. In a statement, Atiku cast the ruling as both a validation of the party’s leadership and a call for sustained national resolve. Even as we welcome the Supreme Court’s firm affirmation of David Mark and the leadership of our great party, the African Democratic Congress, let no one be lulled into complacency. The road ahead remains long in our cause to take back and rescue our country.
This victory belongs to Nigerians, the courageous millions who refuse to surrender their future. We thank them, and we urge them to remain steadfast, because the struggle is far from over. Politics › Presidency Is Not Your Birthright’: Atiku's US Lobbyists Fire Back At Tinubu Ove by ogododo(op): 10:12am On Apr 30 |
In a pointed message that appeared to challenge the President’s rhetoric, the organisation emphasised the conditional nature of political power in a democratic setting. A United States-based lobbying firm, Von Batten-Montague-York, L.C, recently engaged by former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has reacted sharply to recent claims by Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, that unnamed political adversaries are attempting to exploit the country’s worsening insecurity to force him out of office. President Tinubu had alleged that his opponents were weaponising the security crisis for political ends, declaring, “My enemies want to use insecurity in the country to get rid of me, but I’m a stubborn politician who refuses to go and I will campaign for my second term.” Responding directly to the President’s remarks, the U.S.-based organisation dismissed the framing of insecurity as a political tool of opponents, instead insisting that the concerns being raised about Nigeria’s security situation and democratic processes are legitimate and grounded in verifiable realities. In a detailed statement released via its official communication channels, the group acknowledged Tinubu’s longstanding political career but questioned the public perception of his administration. “H.E. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the current President of Nigeria, is a statesman with a long and respected legacy. Nevertheless, his tenure as President is not viewed favorably by a majority of Nigerians,” it stated. The organisation stressed that it has no constitutional or legal authority to influence leadership changes within Nigeria, underscoring that such power resides solely with the electorate. “As American registered foreign agents, we have no authority to remove a sitting leader from office; that power rests exclusively with the Nigerian people,” the statement read, in what appeared to be a direct rebuttal to any suggestion of foreign-backed efforts to destabilise the administration. However, it maintained that it would continue to escalate its concerns within U.S. policy circles, particularly in relation to insecurity and electoral integrity. According to the group, it is already engaging officials in the administration of Donald J. Trump, briefing them on developments in Nigeria. “We are briefing key members of President Donald Trump’s Administration on the insecurity and ongoing attempts to undermine the integrity of Nigeria’s elections because these concerns are grounded in fact,” the organisation said, suggesting that the issues raised go beyond domestic political rivalry. The statement further introduced the role of former Vice President Atiku, indicating that its advocacy efforts are being undertaken at his instance. “Former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar is not your adversary, but a fellow statesman who has directed us to advocate for U.S. engagement aimed at ending the killing of innocent Nigerians and ensuring that the right to free and fair elections is fully respected,” it added. In a pointed message that appeared to challenge the President’s rhetoric, the organisation emphasised the conditional nature of political power in a democratic setting. “The Nigerian presidency is not your birthright, but a privilege bestowed by the Nigerian people, and if the Nigerian people decide you have to go, then you have to go,” the statement said. Beyond rhetoric, the group signalled the possibility of concrete international consequences if allegations relating to human rights abuses or electoral malpractice are substantiated. It warned that it would push for accountability measures under U.S. law, including targeted sanctions. “We will continue to advocate for appropriate US accountability measures, including consideration of Global Magnitsky sanctions, to freeze assets wherever located, should credible evidence establish that you or members of your government are complicit in the killing of Christians in Northern Nigeria or in efforts to rig the upcoming presidential election,” it stated. The organisation’s response underscores a widening divergence between the Nigerian presidency’s interpretation of the country’s insecurity crisis and the perspective being advanced by some international policy actors. While President Tinubu has framed criticisms as politically motivated attempts to weaken his administration, the U.S.-based group insists that the situation reflects deeper governance and security challenges that warrant international attention. The exchange also highlights the increasingly global dimension of Nigeria’s domestic political discourse, particularly as the country moves closer to another electoral cycle. With security concerns continuing to dominate public debate, statements such as these are likely to further intensify scrutiny, both within Nigeria and among foreign stakeholders, over the conduct of governance and the credibility of future elections. https://saharareporters.com/2026/04/30/presidency-not-your-birthright-atikus-us-lobbyists-fire-back-tinubu-over-insecurity |
Politics › Court Restrains INEC From Recognising ADC Congresses by ogododo(op): 11:48am On Apr 29 |
The Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission from recognising or participating in any congress organised by a disputed caretaker leadership of the African Democratic Congress.
The court, in a judgment delivered by Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, also barred former Senate President, David Mark, and other prominent figures in the party from interfering with the functions and tenure of elected state executives.
The ruling is the latest development in the festering leadership dispute within the ADC, with clear implications for the control of party structures ahead of future political activities.
The case arose from an originating summons filed by Norman Obinna and six others on behalf of state chairpersons and executive committees of the party. [/bb
[b]The plaintiffs challenged the legality of actions taken by a caretaker or interim national leadership, particularly the move to organise state congresses through an appointed committee.
They argued that the caretaker body lacked constitutional authority to organise such congresses or to appoint any committee for that purpose.
According to them, only duly elected party organs recognised under the party’s constitution possess the power to conduct congresses.
The plaintiffs, therefore, asked the court to affirm the tenure of the state executive committees and restrain any parallel processes that could undermine their authority.
In resolving the dispute, Justice Abdulmalik held that the claims brought before the court were valid and deserving of judicial consideration, especially in view of alleged breaches of constitutional and statutory provisions.
She stated that she found “the issue in the originating summons meritorious”.
The judge framed the central issue as whether the second to sixth defendants, including Mark, had the constitutional or statutory authority to assume the powers of elected state organs of the ADC, whose tenure is guaranteed under the party’s constitution.
She relied on section 223 of the 1999 Constitution, which mandates political parties to conduct periodic elections based on democratic principles, as well as Article 23 of the ADC Constitution, which provides that national and state officers shall hold office for a maximum of two terms spanning eight years.
According to her, “the question is whether there is any infraction committed by Mr Mark and co-defendants when they convened meetings and appointed a body known as a congress committee to organise state congresses.”
On the defence raised by the defendants that the matter was an internal affair of a political party and therefore outside the jurisdiction of the court, the judge acknowledged the settled legal position but clarified its limits.
She held that while courts are generally reluctant to interfere in internal party matters, they will intervene where there is a clear allegation of violation of constitutional or statutory provisions.
“The law is settled that courts will not interfere. However, where there is an allegation of breach of constitutional or statutory provisions, the court has a duty to intervene,” she ruled.
“Where a party alleges that its constitution has been violated, the court is bound to adjudicate. Any argument that this court lacks jurisdiction on that basis fails,” she added.
Justice Abdulmalik stressed that political parties must operate strictly within the confines of their constitutions, noting that any deviation from prescribed procedures, particularly in leadership matters, cannot be justified under the guise of internal autonomy.
She found that the procedure adopted by the defendants, including the appointment of a “congress committee,” was not recognised by the ADC constitution and therefore invalid.
Consequently, the court held that the tenure of the state executive committees remains valid and must be allowed to run its full course without interference.
The judge further ruled that only those elected structures have the authority to organise state congresses, effectively nullifying any process initiated by the caretaker leadership.
In a set of far-reaching orders, the court set aside the appointment of the congress committee and restrained INEC from recognising any congress organised by it.
The court also restrained Mark and the other defendants from organising congresses or conventions outside the provisions of the party’s constitution.
Additionally, they were barred from taking any steps capable of undermining or disrupting the authority of the state executive committees.
The PUNCH reports that the plaintiffs, led by Obinna, instituted the suit in a representative capacity on behalf of ADC state chairmen and executive committees across the country.
The defendants in the matter include the ADC, David Mark, Patricia Akwashiki, Malam Bolaji Abdullahi, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, Oserheimen Osunbor, and INEC.
In their submissions, the plaintiffs challenged the legality of caretaker or interim national working committees and urged the court to restrain INEC from recognising or participating in any congress conducted under such arrangements.
They maintained that under both the ADC constitution and the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the tenure of state executive committees subsists until valid congresses are conducted in accordance with laid-down procedures.
They further argued that any attempt to bypass the elected structures undermines internal party democracy and erodes the rule of law within the party.
However, the defendants opposed the suit through preliminary objections, counter-affidavits and written addresses.
Mark and the other defendants contended that the dispute related strictly to the internal affairs of the party and was therefore not justiciable.
They also argued that the plaintiffs lacked locus standi to institute the action and that the suit was incompetent.
They further submitted that the plaintiffs failed to exhaust internal dispute resolution mechanisms before approaching the court. https://punchng.com/court-restrains-inec-from-recognising-adc-congresses/

Politics › Mark Faction Writes CJN, Urges Swift Supreme Court Verdict On ADC by ogododo(op): 3:29pm On Apr 28 |
The faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) aligned with former Senate President David Mark has appealed to the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) to ensure a swift delivery of the Supreme Court judgment on the party’s lingering leadership dispute.
The apex court had, last Tuesday, reserved judgment in an appeal filed by Mark challenging the crisis within the party.
Mark is contesting the March 12 decision of the Court of Appeal, which directed all parties to maintain the status quo ante bellum in a case brought by aggrieved members of the ADC.
In the appeal marked SC/CV/180/2026, the former Senate president argued that the appellate court overstepped its bounds by intervening in what he described as the internal matters of a political party.
The case originated from a September 4, 2025, ruling of the Federal High Court, which was challenged by Mark but later upheld by the Court of Appeal in its March 12 judgment.
The suit at the lower court was filed by Nafiu Bala, a factional national chairman, who is disputing the takeover of the party’s structure by the Mark-led group.
In a letter dated April 28, 2026, and signed by the party’s counsel, Shaibu Enejoh Aruwa, the Mark faction warned that any delay in the Supreme Court’s decision could jeopardise the party’s participation in the 2027 general elections.
The letter stated that if the ruling is not delivered within three days, the ADC “stands the grave and irreversible risk of being excluded from participating in the 2027 General Election”.
According to the faction, such an outcome would effectively deprive millions of Nigerians of their constitutional right to contest elections on the platform of the party.
“My Lord, this appeal was graciously heard expeditiously on the 22nd April, 2026 and judgment was thereafter reserved to a date to be communicated by the court,” the letter reads.
“However, My Lord, we are most respectfully constrained to request for my Lord’s kind intervention and directive in ensuring that the judgment is rendered timeously, having regard that INEC, the 4th Respondent in the said Appeal, purportedly acting pursuant to the judgment of the lower court in
“Appeal No: CA/ABJ/145/2026 acted to remove or de-recognize the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), leaving the ADC without leadership at the moment even though the ADC remains a recognized registered political party in Nigeria.
“My Lord, we also respectfully draw Your Lordship’s attention to the INEC Timetable for the 2027 General Elections and the activities in readiness which have already commenced.
“Your Lordship would find attached copies of the INEC Press Release de-recognizing the leadership of ADC and the Revised INEC Timetable for the 2027 General Elections.
“My Lord, the ADC’s ability to comply with these statutory requirements to participate in the 2027 General Elections is wholly dependent on the timely delivery of the judgment in the instant Appeal.
“Without the delivery of judgment within the next three days from the date of this letter, the ADC stands the grave and irreversible risk of being excluded from participating in the 2027 General Elections.
“This would disenfranchise millions of Nigerians who have subscribed to the ideals of the ADC and deny them their constitutional right to freely associate and contest elections through a political party of their choice.
“My Lord, we are mindful of the enormous responsibilities and workload of this Honourable Court. We are equally aware that justice delayed, in this peculiar circumstance, would amount to justice denied. The entire political future of our client and the legitimate expectations of its members nationwide now hangs in the balance.” https://www.vanguardngr.com/2026/04/mark-faction-writes-cjn-urges-swift-supreme-court-verdict-on-adc/

Politics › My Talks With Jonathan Anchored On Repositioning Nigeria – Obi by ogododo(op): 11:15pm On Apr 27 |
Peter Obi has said closed-door meeting with former President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday was frank and thoughtful.
He said the discussions were anchored on the urgent need to reposition Nigeria on the path of unity, security, stability, productivity, and inclusive governance.
The former Anambra governor, who led a delegation of notable South-East leaders to Jonathan’s residence, said the consultation was part of his ongoing engagements with Nigerian leaders ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“Our discussions were frank, thoughtful, and anchored on the urgent need to reposition Nigeria on the path of unity, security, stability, productivity, and inclusive governance.
“At a time when our nation continues to grapple with economic hardship, rising insecurity, and deepening social divisions, it has become imperative that leaders across regions come together to reflect, consult, and act in the overall interest of the Nigerian people,” Obi said in a post on X.
He argued that the leadership Nigeria needed must be driven not by personal ambition, but by competence, character, capacity, and compassion.
“Nigeria today requires leadership that is guided not by personal ambition, but by competence, character, capacity, and compassion. Governance is not about sharing what is left, but about creating what is needed,” he said.
Obi added that Nigeria must transition from a consumption-driven economy to a production-driven one where its vast human and natural resources are harnessed for the common good.
He framed the 2027 elections as a critical opportunity to reset the country’s direction.
“The 2027 elections must not just be seen as another political exercise, but as a critical opportunity to reset the trajectory of our country.
“It must be about the Nigerian child who deserves quality education, the struggling entrepreneur who needs a conducive environment to thrive, and the millions of citizens who simply desire a secure and functional nation,” Obi said.
He was accompanied by Igbo elders, ADC senators from the South-East zone, and other political associates.
PUNCH Online earlier reported that the ADC Vanguard, the mobilisation wing of the African Democratic Congress coalition, which posted videos and photographs of the meeting on X, described the discussions as high-level and focused on the possibility of opposition parties presenting a single presidential candidate for 2027.
The meeting came days after opposition parties, including a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party and the ADC, held a national summit in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Saturday.
The gathering, hosted by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and chaired by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, brought together key figures including Atiku Abubakar, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and Rotimi Amaechi.
The Ibadan Declaration issued at the close of the summit resolved to forge a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress and present a single consensus presidential candidate in 2027.
Obi expressed confidence that Nigeria could turn around through dialogue and collective will.
“I remain convinced that through sincere dialogue, unity of purpose, and a firm commitment to doing what is right, Nigeria can and will rise again,” he said. https://punchng.com/my-talks-with-jonathan-anchored-on-repositioning-nigeria-obi/

Crime › Gunmen Kidnap 23 Pupils In Kogi Orphanage Attack by ogododo(op): 11:05am On Apr 27 |
Gunmen have abducted 23 pupils and the wife of a school proprietor following an attack on an orphanage and school facility in the Zariagi area of Lokoja, Kogi State.
PUNCH Online gathered that the incident, which occurred late Sunday, targeted a facility identified as Dahallukitab Group of Schools.
Confirming the development in a statement on Monday, the Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, said security operatives responded swiftly, leading to the rescue of 15 of the abducted pupils.
The commissioner disclosed that the school was operating outside regulatory oversight.
“The facility was operating illegally in a remote, bushy environment without registration with the State Government and without the knowledge of relevant authorities and security agencies,” Fanwo said.
According to him, efforts are ongoing to secure the release of the remaining eight victims and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
“The Kogi State Government commends the gallantry, professionalism, and swift response of the Police and other security agencies for rising decisively to the occasion,” he added.
Fanwo warned against operating schools and orphanages in isolated areas without proper authorisation, describing such practices as dangerous.
“While the Government remains fully committed to ensuring the rescue of all victims, it is important to stress that the operation of orphanages, schools, and similar institutions in isolated and vulnerable locations, without proper registration and notification to relevant authorities, poses serious security risks, especially in the current security climate,” he said.
The commissioner further urged operators to comply with safety regulations.
“The Government strongly discourages such practices and reiterates the need for strict compliance with regulatory and safety protocols,” Fanwo said.
“All operators of such facilities are advised to engage with appropriate government agencies to ensure proper oversight, security assessment, and protection.”
The commissioner added that security agencies are working to bring the situation under control, noting that updates will be provided as operations continue. https://punchng.com/gunmen-kidnap-23-pupils-in-kogi-orphanage-attack/

Travel › Flights Delayed, Rescheduled As Jet Fuel Shortage Deepens by ogododo(op): 10:13am On Apr 27 |
Air travellers across Nigeria are facing growing frustration as a deepening shortage of aviation fuel, commonly known as Jet A1, continues to disrupt flight operations, causing widespread delays and uncertainty across major airports, Daily Trust can report.
Airlines have warned that the persistent scarcity of fuel is affecting their ability to maintain schedules, with several flights either delayed, rescheduled, or, in some cases, cancelled at short notice.
The situation has become more pronounced in recent days, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded and forcing many to reconsider travel plans.
Amidst this development, the ground handling companies have threatened to withdraw their services to indigenous airlines over N9bn debt.
Already, operators say the price of Jet A1 has ballooned by over 300 per cent since the start of the US-Israel war in Iran and the shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway route responsible for one fifth of the global fuel supply.
The operators under the aegis of Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) had threatened to shut down operation last Monday but they were prevailed upon by the federal government to suspend the shutdown while a meeting was held with stakeholders spearheaded by the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development on Wednesday last week.
A follow-up meeting with oil marketers was also held on Thursday but as of the time of filing this report there was no relief to airlines over the acute shortage of aviation fuel.
The only take away from the meeting was the approval of 30 per cent discount on debt owed by airlines to service providers while the airlines are seeking a total waiver on their indebtedness to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), among others.
However, the scarcity of jet fuel and the hike in price is putting intense pressure on airline operations in a sector already grappling with high operating costs.
The impact is evident at airports in Lagos, Abuja, and other key domestic routes, where passengers now face extended waiting times.
Many travellers report spending hours at terminals with little clarity on departure times, while others have had flights rescheduled multiple times within the same day.
A social media influencer at the weekend called out one of the airlines for allegedly issuing boarding passes when it knew there was no fuel.
It was gathered that some of the operators have also begun to rationalise routes and reduce flight frequencies in a bid to manage limited resources.
For instance, Air Peace slashed its London-Heathrow flight to three frequencies in response to the shortage.
As the shortage persists, concerns are mounting that the aviation sector could face more severe disruptions if urgent steps are not taken to stabilise fuel supply.
…Ground handlers threaten service withdrawal
Meanwhile, domestic and international flight operations of indigenous airlines may be disrupted from Tuesday, following a seven-day ultimatum issued by the Aviation Ground Handlers Association of Nigeria (AGHAN) over an outstanding debt exceeding N9 billion by the airlines.
Daily Trust reports that ground handling companies offer safety critical services including passenger check-in, baggage handling, refuelling coordination and ramp services to airlines.
The ground handling companies are Skyway Handling Company of Nigeria (SAHCO) Plc; Nigerian Aviation Handling Nigeria (NAHCO) Plc, Butake Handling Company, Precision Handling Company Limited and Swissport Handling Company.
A letter which was jointly signed by AGHAN Chairman and Vice Chairman, Olaniyi Adigun and Ahmed Bashir, respectively, addressed to the President of Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), is dated April 21, 2026 with the head: ‘Outstanding Indebtedness and Notice of Possible Withdrawal of Services.’
The letter that was also copied the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo; Director-General Civil Aviation (DGCA), Chris Najomo; Managing Director, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Olubunmi Kuku; Director-General, Department of State Services (DSS), Oluwatosin Ajayi and the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, was obtained by The Guardian over the weekend.
AGHAN in the letter warned that its member companies could be forced to suspend ground handling services from Tuesday, April 28, 2026 if the debts were not settled within the stipulated timeframe.
The letter read in part: “This situation has continued to exert significant pressure on the operational capacity of our members, adversely affecting their ability to deliver sustainable, efficient and safe services. It has also created considerable financial strain on the management and workforce of the affected organizations.
“Despite repeated engagements and efforts made in good faith by our members to secure settlement of these obligations, the responses received thus far have not yielded the desired outcomes, with payment commitments largely unmet.
“In light of the foregoing, and to safeguard the continued viability of our members’ operations, we wish to respectfully notify you that our members may be constrained to withdraw services should these outstanding debts remain unresolved within seven days from the date of this letter.”
The handlers also apologised to air travellers for any inconvenience the situation may cause and reiterated their commitment to a peaceful resolution on the matter.
Stop Scapegoating Air Peace
Meanwhile, aviation analyst, Fred Chukwuelobe yesterday warned against scapegoating Air Peace over the recent aviation fuel shortage, noting that the crisis is global.
“There is a renewed and rather orchestrated onslaught against Air Peace over the current shortage of aviation fuel (Jet A-1). Let’s be clear from the outset: this is not a crisis created by one airline, nor is it peculiar to Nigeria. It is a global aviation challenge driven by supply constraints, price volatility, and persistent disruptions in the fuel value chain as a result of the Middle East crisis,” he said.
According to him, it is “baffling and disappointing” the “deliberate attempt in some quarters to personalise a systemic problem.”
“The issue has already been escalated to the appropriate authorities, particularly the federal government and engagements have been held, and efforts are ongoing to stabilise supply. Yet, rather than direct attention to the root causes, a chorus of social media commentators and disgruntled passengers has chosen the easier path – targeting Air Peace as though it exists in isolation from the realities of the global aviation industry.
“Across the world, airlines are battling the same headwinds: volatile fuel prices, refining limitations, geopolitical uncertainties, and post-pandemic supply chain fragility. Established global carriers like Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines and others have not been spared. They have adjusted schedules, reduced capacity, and, in some instances, cancelled flights due to fuel availability issues and cost pressures. These are facts, not excuses,” Chukwuelobe said.
He advised that the focus should be on sustainable solutions through “strengthening local refining capacity, improving supply chain resilience, and creating a more stable operating environment for all airlines.” https://dailytrust.com/flights-delayed-rescheduled-as-jet-fuel-shortage-deepens/
