CrimeCommanding Officer Shot Dead As Boko Haram Hits Another Military Base In Borno by ogododo(op): 12:38pm On Mar 09
Boko Haram terrorists have overrun another military camp in Borno State, killing the commanding officer and other officers.

The latest attack happened in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State in the early hours of Monday.

A source from the town revealed that the insurgents attacked the military base around 12:30am.

They (terrorists) stormed the town from multiple directions and launched an attack on the military camp,” the source said.

Another security source said that the insurgents dislodged the troops from the base, set vehicles ablaze and carted away ammunition.

“I cannot say much about the casualties but it’s very sad that we also lost the CO (commanding officer) here,” one of the security sources said

Last month, the insurgents had attacked the military base but the gallant troops repelled the attack, killing many terrorists.

The brave response was commended by the community, which earned the Commanding Officer accolade and he was widely celebrated, particularly on social media.

The lawmaker representing Kukawa LGA in the Borno State House of Assembly, Karta Maina Ma’aji Lawan, also celebrated with the troops at the time.

Commenting on the latest attack, the lawmaker said it was sad that the military base was overrun this time around.

The attack comes after terrorists attacked a military base and Internally Displaced Persons camp in Ngoshe town, Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno, killing an unspecified number of soldiers and civilians.

PoliticsIWD: ADC Reserves 40% Party Positions For Women At All Levels by ogododo(op): 6:03pm On Mar 08
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) says it has reserved 40 per cent of its positions for women across all structures to reaffirm its commitment to gender inclusion and leadership participation.

This was contained in a statement by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, to commemorate International Women’s Day (IWD), issued in Abuja on Sunday.

Mr Abdullahi said the ADC recognised women as partners in nation-building, noting that across Nigeria, women shoulder enormous responsibilities within homes, communities, and workplaces.

According to him, any political movement genuinely committed to national progress must recognise, empower, and harness the strength, resilience, and leadership potential of women.

He stated that the composition of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) reflects a deliberate commitment to ensuring women are not pushed to political margins.

This is because we are the p political party in Nigeria whose constitution reserves 40 per cent of all party positions, at every level, for women,” Mr Abdullahi stated.

He reaffirmed the party’s commitment to women’s inclusion in politics, insisting that women must move from the margins to the centre of leadership.

Mr Abdullahi noted that Nigerian women carry a disproportionate share of the nation’s social and economic responsibilities but remain significantly underrepresented in key national institutions.

He maintained that empowering women politically and economically remains essential to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy and ensuring inclusive governance for sustainable national development.

As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to mark International Women’s Day, the ADC celebrates all Nigerian women, whose labour and leadership sustain the nation.

“From mothers raising communities to entrepreneurs powering markets and teachers educating children, Nigerian women carry a disproportionate share of the nation’s burdens.

“Yet when critical decisions about Nigeria’s future are taken, women remain significantly underrepresented in positions of leadership across several national institutions,” the spokesman noted.

According to him, the ADC is determined to change the narrative by ensuring women are fully integrated into the party’s leadership structure.

“In the ADC, women are leaders. They are part of the structures that guide the party and shape its decisions,” Mr Abdullahi added.

Reacting to the situation, Abdullahi wrote that even expensive lobbying efforts cannot “whitewash the facts,” insisting that Nigerians are still facing widespread violence in several parts of the country.

The opposition party, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has strongly criticised the administration of President Bola Tinubu over the continued wave of killings and insecurity across Nigeria, accusing the government of failing in its primary responsibility to protect citizens.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said no amount of public relations efforts could conceal what he described as the reality of worsening insecurity in the country.

Reacting to the situation, Abdullahi wrote that even expensive lobbying efforts cannot “whitewash the facts,” insisting that Nigerians are still facing widespread violence in several parts of the country.

"You can pay lobbyists $9m to repackage you, but you cannot whitewash the facts: Fact 1: More people have been killed by terrorists under this government than at any other time in Nigeria’s history. Fact 2: More people (135 million Nigerians) are living in poverty today than at any other time in Nigeria’s history. Fact 3: When you try to defend incompetence, you will ALWAYS end up sounding like an idiot," Bolaji Abdullahi said via an X post.

The ADC spokesman referenced ongoing attacks and killings in multiple communities, arguing that the scale and frequency of the violence demonstrate a serious failure of government security strategies.

Recent months have witnessed deadly attacks in different parts of the country, including incidents in Kwara State and Katsina State, where dozens of civilians were reportedly killed by armed groups and terrorists.

The ADC said such attacks reflect deeper problems within the nation’s security architecture.

The party further questioned the effectiveness of measures previously announced by the Federal Government, including the declaration of a security emergency and promises to recruit thousands of additional police officers to strengthen internal security.

According to the ADC, the persistence of attacks across several states suggests that armed groups are still able to operate freely, exposing weaknesses in intelligence gathering, border control, inter-agency coordination and emergency response systems.

The opposition party therefore called on the Federal Government to be transparent with Nigerians about the true state of national security and to outline concrete steps being taken to halt the killings.

It maintained that any government that fails to safeguard the lives of its citizens has fallen short of its most fundamental responsibility.

PoliticsCrisis In Kwara APC As Members Storm Chairman’s Residence, Protest Imposition by ogododo(op): 4:00pm On Mar 07
This is as they accused the chairman of allegedly altering names on the list of party executives and imposing preferred candidates.

Hundreds of aggrieved members and chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State on Saturday stormed the private residence of the party’s state chairman, Prince Sunday Fagbemi, in protest over the manipulation of the results of the recently concluded party congresses.

The protest, which took place in the early hours of Saturday in Ilorin, saw party members chanting protest songs and repeatedly shouting “Olè! Olè!!” — a Yoruba word meaning “thief."

This is as they accused the chairman of allegedly altering names on the list of party executives and imposing preferred candidates.

The demonstration created tension around the chairman’s residence as scores of APC supporters gathered, demanding that the leadership of the party respect the authentic list of executives affirmed during the congresses conducted across the state.

The protesters said the congresses were held across wards, local government areas and the state in line with directives from the national leadership of the party, stressing that the exercise was meant to reaffirm existing party executives through a consensus and affirmation process.

According to them, the process was peaceful, transparent and conducted openly in the presence of security operatives as well as officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), who monitored the exercise in several locations.

One of the protesters who spoke during the demonstration accused the state party leadership of attempting to manipulate the results after the congress had been successfully concluded.

“We followed the directive of the national leadership of the party that the congress should be done by affirmation. The existing executives were returned unopposed and everything was done openly in the presence of security agencies and INEC officials,” the protester said.

“But what we are seeing now is an attempt to doctor the list and replace the names of those who were affirmed with names of other people. That is why we have come here to register our protest.”

Another party member who participated in the protest warned that any attempt to alter the results could trigger serious internal crisis within the party in the state.

“We will not accept imposition. The authentic list that was affirmed during the congress must be respected. If they change the names or impose candidates, it will cause serious problems for the party,” the member said.

The aggrieved members insisted that the affirmation congresses were conducted peacefully across the state and reflected the collective decision of party stakeholders at the grassroots level.

They maintained that any attempt to tamper with the affirmed results would undermine the credibility of the process and threaten the internal democracy of the ruling party in the state.

The protesters therefore called on the national leadership of the APC to intervene and ensure that the original list of executives produced during the congresses is maintained.

They also warned that failure to address their grievances could deepen divisions within the party and destabilise its structure in Kwara State ahead of future political activities.

As of the time of filing this report, the state chairman, Prince Sunday Fagbemi, had not publicly responded to the allegations raised by the protesters.

An explosion was heard over Dubai airport on Saturday followed by a cloud of smoke in the air, a witness told AFP, as Iran pressed attacks across the Gulf.

The Flightradar24 tracking website showed planes circulating above the airport in an apparent holding pattern.

Limited flights resumed from Dubai’s main airport, the world’s busiest for international traffic, on Monday despite daily drone attacks on targets in the United Arab Emirates.

Dubai Media Office described “a minor incident resulting from the fall of debris after an interception” in a post on X, but also denied reports circulating about the airport in the same post.

Four staff were injured and a concourse damaged at Dubai airport last Saturday, as war erupted following US-Israeli strikes against Iran.

Dubai Airports said at the time that the incident was “quickly contained”, without giving further details.

Iranian attacks have also hit Abu Dhabi airport, the upmarket Palm Jumeirah development and the Burj Al Arab luxury hotel, while drone debris caused a fire at the US consulate in Dubai on Tuesday.

Nigeria Police Remove Force PRO Benjamin Hundeyin Six Months After Appointment Amid Shake-up

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has removed its Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Benjamin Hundeyin, barely six months after he assumed the influential position.

It was learnt that the approval for Hundeyin’s removal was given on Thursday, March 5, 2025.

However, the circumstances surrounding the sudden development remain unclear as of the time of filing this report.

The decision comes amid ongoing internal restructuring within the police hierarchy following the emergence of a new leadership at the force headquarters.

The shake-up follows the appointment of Tunji Disu as the 23rd Inspector-General of Police by Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Disu was named IGP last week after the removal of Kayode Egbetokun, who had led the force since 2023.

A source quoted by THE WHISTLER confirmed the development, saying, “The Force Public Relations Officer has been removed this morning.”

However, uncertainty remains over who will replace Hundeyin as the new spokesperson of the force, particularly as operational activities within the police have intensified in recent days.

“We don’t know who will take over from him, although we thought he would last longer considering his expertise,” the source said.

“However, when a new IGP is appointed, it is not news that some positions would be vacant, unfortunately, he was affected.”

When SaharaReporters recently contacted Hundeyin, he replied that he was “unavailable right now” and advised SaharaReporters to contact any of the FCT or state police command spokespersons.

PoliticsWe Are Not Afraid Of State Police – Disu by ogododo(op): 4:15pm On Mar 04
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has disclosed that he is ready to work for the realization of State Police.

The new IGP also assured his men that their job is not in danger of being taken over by State Police.

Addressing State House correspondents after he was officially sworn in on Wednesday by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, at the Presidential Villa, Disu also vowed to tackle professionally the issue of protests in some part of the country over the situation in the Middle East.

He said, “We want to ensure that the best thing is done. State police has come to stay, and the police should be able to do their own part in making it succeed. The police are not afraid. Our jobs are not being taken. It’s just an issue of partnership.

“Everywhere in the world, we are aware that is, what we call intelligence policing. Our ears are to the ground. We know we have groups of people, different kinds of Islamic sects in Nigeria. We have those who pay allegiance to this eastern part of the world as well.

“So we know if anything happens in the eastern part of the world, the repercussion will come to us. So we are putting all necessary actions. You can see policemen on patrol, and most importantly, we are talking to them to ensure that they do not take laws and orders into their hands.”

On his approach, he said: “I made up my mind to ensure that my officers get to know that we are working for the people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the citizens of the country are our bosses.”

ad
Speaking on the committee he set up earlier on Wednesday morning to review state police, Disu explained: “We don’t want it to seem as if others are taking decisions, and we, the most important people concerned, did not do anything.

“It is somebody that is well motivated that will put in their best. Our jobs are very difficult. Some few years ago, when I was Commissioner of Police FCT, I was bold enough to announce that we lost 140 policemen just in a year. So the jobs are difficult. Men sleep out. A lot of people don’t have time to go back to their families.

“So the welfare is very vital, and I’m lucky to be working with a president who has made up his mind to give us whatever we want.”

PoliticsBusinesses Bleed As Blackout Worsens by ogododo(op): 8:28am On Mar 04
As widespread blackout and load shedding on the national grid persist, Nigerians across major cities are counting losses, with many small businesses shutting down and households forced to abandon bulk food purchases due to their inability to power refrigerators.

Daily Trust gathered that the electricity supply crisis intensified in early February after gas suppliers reduced volumes to power generation plants over mounting debts owed by generating companies (GenCos).

While plant owners blame the federal government for unpaid subsidy obligations, the crisis coincides with the dry season when hydroelectric plants operate below capacity due to low water levels.

The reduced generation has affected all parts of the country, forcing distribution companies (DisCos) to introduce load shedding to ration the limited electricity available.

Fintiri forwards 3 nominees for commissioner positions
Mokwa flood victims cannot wait another rainy season
This is just as th National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) is mobilising its members nationwide for a strike next week following the expiration of its 21-day ultimatum to the federal government.

The NUEE had, in a January 26 letter addressed to the Minister of Power, issued a strike notice accusing disCos and genCos of anti-labour practices, wage violations and failure to remit deducted Pay As You Earn (PAYE) taxes and pension contributions.

Data from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) shows that Abuja DisCo is currently receiving 539 megawatts (MW) from the grid; Ikeja DisCo, 533MW; Eko DisCo, 455MW; Ibadan DisCo, 336MW; Benin, 227MW; Enugu, 218MW; Jos, 159MW; Kaduna, 178MW; Kano, 190MW and Port Harcourt,196MW.

Artisans, residents count losses in Kano, Bayelsa

Artisans and residents across Kano State say the persistent blackout is crippling small businesses and worsening living conditions.

Power supply in Kano and parts of the North West is handled by the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), serving Kano, Katsina and Jigawa states.

Musa Abdullahi, a welder in Hotoro area of Kano, said he now relies almost entirely on a petrol generator.

“Before this load shedding became worse, we used to have at least eight to 10 hours of electricity daily. Now, we sometimes go two days without power. I spend between N8,000 and N12,000 daily on fuel. That is eating deep into my profit,” he said.

Abdullahi added that he had lost customers who could not wait for him to complete their jobs due to power interruptions.

“Some projects that should take one day now take three or four days. Customers get frustrated and go elsewhere,” he said.

A tailor in Sabon Gari, Aisha Sani, said her earnings had dropped by nearly half in the last two months.

She said since she uses industrial machines that require stable power, she misses deadlines when there is no electricity.

She said she lost at least five big orders recently because she could not deliver on time.

Frozen food and cold drinks sellers are also recording heavy losses. Maryam Ibrahim, who sells frozen chicken and fish at Kurna, said she lost goods worth over N300,000 after a 48-hour outage.

“My generator developed a fault and before I could repair it, most of my goods had gone bad. I had to throw them away,” she lamented.

According to a barber at Tarauni, Kano, Ibrahim Nasiru, “When there is light, customers rush in and we struggle to attend to them. But when there is no light, we just sit and watch. I cannot afford to run a generator throughout the day because my profit per haircut is small.”

Abubakar Sadiq, a civil servant at Rijiyar Lemo, said his family now spends more on fuel than on some essential household items.

“We have children who need to study at night. Without electricity, they cannot read properly. We spend so much on petrol for the generator. It is becoming unbearable,” he said.

Another Kano resident, Fatima Lawan, said the situation had affected water supply in many homes that depend on electric pumping machines.

“When there is no light, we cannot pump water into our tanks. We now fetch water from neighbours who have bigger generators or from commercial boreholes. It is stressful,” she said.

The situation is said to have compelled some businesses to begin laying off workers. Bashir Ahmad, who runs a printing press at Ungogo in Kano, said revenue had fallen by more than 40 per cent, forcing him to cut staff.

In Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, artisans say rising fuel costs have forced them to increase service charges, leading to poor patronage.

Stephen Eddie, who runs a barbing salon in Amarata, said he raised his price from N500 to N800 to offset generator expenses.

I don’t even make gains again, by the time you buy fuel to run the generator, most of the money you make will go into that, and customers are not coming as it used to be. But I hope the situation will soon change, because Governor Douye Diri has promised us that the gas turbine will be lit up very soon, and that will help in boosting the business in the town,” he said.

A welder in Opolo, Tariebi Ado, said many workshops have shut down because operators cannot afford diesel.

He said: “I have been closing this workshop since last week, I just come out today because someone gave me few protectors to do, if it was when power was stable, I used to come out to the workshop and at the end of the day, I will go back with money to feed my family.

“The government should help us invest in the power situation in this country, because without stable power supply, the economy of this country will not move forward. Like in Yenagoa here, we last saw light more than two weeks ago, how can an artisan work and make a living in such a situation.”

Kaduna, businesses turn to alternatives

In Kaduna, business owners say they have adjusted to the reality of unreliable power by adopting alternative energy sources; while residents say even when electricity returns briefly, bills remain high.

The CEO of Al Fatimah Laundry Services on Charanchi Road in Tudun Wada, Kaduna, Aliyu Abubakar, said that the lack of electricity no longer affects his business because he has already accepted the situation.

He said when there is no electricity, he uses a gas iron but there is electricity he makes use of it but, thus keeps all options.

Honestly, we have lost hope in electricity in Nigeria”.

According to him, He does not want his customers to suffer, so he uses gas irons but explained that it is easier and cheaper to work with electricity.

“As there is no steady power, we had to increase the price of ironing. If they iron clothes like shirts and trousers using electricity, we charge N200. But if we use a gas iron, the charge is N300. Some customers even prefer the gas iron because they do not want to wait for electricity to come. Many customers no longer believe that power will be restored when they need it, so they ask for the gas iron instead,” he said.

On his part, Ustaz Aliyu Suleiman, who lives in Rigasa area of Zaria, also said the delay in restoring electricity, especially during Ramadan, made people stop complaining because they were tired.

He said that many people now use small solar systems to light their homes and charge their phones.

“It is worrying that you can be in Kaduna city but feel like you are in a village because of the lack of electricity. If you want to run a business at home, like selling ice blocks and similar items, you cannot do it without electricity. Many people who used to run such businesses have stopped because they depend on power supply.”

He also said that whenever electricity finally comes to their area, they still receive high electricity bills despite the poor power

Abuja Band A customers lament

In Abuja, residents on Band A, who are expected to receive a minimum of 20 hours of daily supply under regulations by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), say they are receiving far less.

Emmanuel Addah, a resident of Mabushi, said he had had to throw away perishable food items due to prolonged outages.

“It is very unfortunate that electricity consumers keep on being extorted by these companies. they know it is not possible to keep up with the supply but will still charge us the exorbitant price for band A customers. Why can’t they lower the price since they have not been able to meet up with the service they are meant to provide.”

Addah said the situation has made him not buy food in bulk as he usually does.

“Now, we have to go to the market almost everyday to buy perishable goods that would have been preserved in the fridge. But we can’t keep on wasting money. The only solution is to take the stress of going to the market frequently.”

For Alice Abraham, she said she is only receiving between 15 and 10 hours of electricity daily despite being on Band A.

“The power supply has reduced when compared to before. Though we are supposed to be premium customers, the situation does not reflect the high price of electricity we are meant to pay. I spend less than N20,000 a week on electricity but the supply is not commensurate, thus the government needs to intervene as it shows the power sector is in crisis. But the silence of the government shows it is also complicit and why allow a certain cabal to make you citizens go through hardship funded by the customers.”

On his part, Abel Ibrahim said since the load shedding began had to pay more for diesel to stay in business as constant electricity is important for his super market business.

“it cost of doing business is too high with this lack of solutions to fix our electricity sector. The government has only been making rhetoric without concrete actions to fix the electricity issue all this while. Why won’t our best brains leave when the dream is being suffocated by incompetency.”

Ilorin residents groan under rising costs

In Ilorin, Kwara State, residents and small business owners say the unstable electricity supply is piling financial pressure on households.

A computer technician operating under the name Phoenix Computers said he spends between N2,000 and N4,000 daily on fuel.

“I don’t have solar yet and the least I spend on fuel is N2,000 daily. At times, it gets as high as N4,000. This is a direct cost to us because there is a limit to how much you can increase the price of repairs due to competition. You don’t want to lose customers,” he said.

He explained that beyond the cost of fuel, the frequent power outages also slow down productivity.

He noted that the current heatwave has further compounded the challenge, as operating without cooling systems or fans is almost impossible.

“I have no choice but to put on the generator because customers cannot bear the heat inside the office. It is that bad. Even the staff cannot function properly under that kind of heat,” he stated.

Others say the heatwave had worsened conditions, making it difficult to operate without generators.

Findings by Daily Trust showed that many small-scale business owners in areas such Mandate, Agbooba, Adewole and Surulere among others like welders had resorted to alternative power sources, including petrol generators and solar installations, to stay afloat.

Some residents said the high cost of fuel, coupled with the unstable electricity supply, is further stretching already tight budgets amid rising living costs.

They called on relevant authorities and power distribution companies to urgently address the situation to ease the burden on citizens.

Another resident of Ilorin, Mrs Oladuni Abdullahi, said: “With food to preserve, we cannot afford to stay without electricity for too long. Things spoil easily because of the heat. We are spending money we did not plan for.”

Similarly, Omowumi Zainab, a tailor, said pressure from customers has left her with no option but to spend heavily on fuel every day in order to meet deadlines, particularly with the rush for Salah celebrations.

“This is not even about Band A, B or C anymore. These days, the situation is getting worse in terms of epileptic power supply,” she said.

“We have solar, but it cannot power our refrigerator. And you know this is Ramadan; if you are not careful, your food stock will spoil. At home, my family spends about N3,000 on fuel daily because of the lack of electricity, which is getting worse. The same thing applies at my shop. With pressure from customers and preparations for Sallah, the situation is overwhelming. We do not want to disappoint our customers. We honestly do not know what to do now, and the worst part is that we do not know when the situation will improve,” she lamented.

Creatives decry infrastructure gap

Award-winning producer Sarz has also criticised unreliable electricity, describing it as a major obstacle to creativity.

Speaking on the Afropolitan Podcast, he said inconsistent power disrupts creative momentum.

“I was born and raised in this country and I have never experienced electricity for 24 hours. There are times when I wake up feeling inspired and I want to create music but there is no light. Sometimes, even when you want to buy fuel, they will tell you that there is a strike or scarcity. And then you end up doing not nothing and the potential is just wasted,” he said.

Sarz explained that creativity thrives on momentum and mental readiness, but those conditions can quickly be undermined when basic infrastructure fails.

ad
“As a creative person, you need to be mentally charged to perform at your best. So, when the infrastructure is lacking at the moment, you are mentally charged, it is a challenge,” Sarz added.

He stressed that while Nigeria’s entertainment industry has recorded global success, its progress remains constrained by structural deficiencies. For the sector to truly flourish, he noted that consistent power supply and improved infrastructure must become a priority.

Why supply remains low

NISO had attributed the crisis to inadequate gas supply to thermal plants.

ad
It had said the national grid was receiving only one-third of gas supply needed to provide adequate electricity supply to Nigerians.

In a statement, the management of NISO said this had brought on low supply across the country, leading to load shedding.

It noted that it had caused the reduction of electricity generation to 4,300 Megawatts.

“We hereby notify the general public and all market participants that the current average available generation of approximately 4,300MW is primarily due to inadequate gas supply to thermal generating stations.”

ad
“Given that thermal plants account for the dominant share of Nigeria’s generation mix, any disruption or limitation in gas supply directly affects available generation capacity and overall grid output. Consequently, the current energy allocated to Distribution Companies (DisCos) reflects the reduced supply available on the grid.”

“Available operational data indicates that thermal power plants collectively require an estimated 1,629.75 million standard cubic feet (MMSCF) of gas per day to operate at optimal capacity. However, as of February 23, 2026, actual gas supply to the stations stood at approximately 692.00 MMSCF, representing a significant shortfall in daily gas supply requirements.”

ad
It said the available gas supply represents less than 43% of the required volume, resulting in constrained generation output.

“The current low generation level is fundamentally driven by inadequate gas supply to thermal generating units, leading to reduced energy allocation to the DisCos.”

It added that when total system generation drops significantly, the Independent System Operator must implement load shedding across the system, while dispatching available energy in line with the NERC MYTO allocation percentages across all distribution networks to maintain grid stability and prevent system disturbances.

ad
“While we regret the inconvenience this situation may cause electricity consumers and affected market participants, we will continue to work closely with relevant stakeholders to ensure full energy allocation as soon as gas supply improves and generation capacity is restored.”

Situation will not improve till April – AEDC

Meanwhile the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), while expressing empathy with the frustrations being experienced due to the limited power allocation to its customers, said Nigeria’s power sector is currently facing significant constraints during the dry season (typically November to April)

ad
While also blaming the gas shortage, it said hydropower generation often drops during this season due to low water levels in dams, and many thermal plants experience reduced gas supply from pipeline issues, vandalism, and other supply-chain disruptions.

“These factors have led to lower overall generation and reduced allocations from the national grid to all Distribution Companies (DisCos), including AEDC.”

“Recent data from the grid operator show that allocations to DisCos have been severely limited at times, sometimes dropping dramatically due to system issues or generation shortfalls.”

It added that similar notices from other DisCos have attributed widespread outages to gas shortages and reduced national generation, emphasising that such declines are not within the DisCos’ control but require collective efforts from generation companies, gas suppliers, and regulators.

PoliticsAkpabio’s Aide, Patty Etete, Resigns, Alleges Assault by ogododo(op): 3:07pm On Mar 03
A spokesperson to the Senate president said he was not aware of the aide’s resignation.

Patty Etete, a former member of the House of Representatives, has resigned as senior legislative aide to the President of the Senate Godswill Akpabio, citing sustained hostility, alleged physical assaults and administrative irregularities within the Senate President’s office.

In a letter dated 27 February and addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Mr Etete said his decision to resign was “long overdue” and followed years of “humiliation, discrimination and denial of access” to Mr Akpabio.

Mr Etete, who represented the Ikot Ekpene/Essien Udim/Obot Akara Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives from 2007 to 2011, said he accepted what he described as a “downgraded designation” in good faith.

“You invited me to be part of your ‘first eleven’ of appointees, given my roles and contributions both at the senatorial election and the contest for the Senate presidency,” he wrote, adding that although his appointment was announced as a special assistant, he was later made to serve as a senior legislative aide, a situation he considered as being “demeaning”.

He alleged that while working with Mr Akpabio, he operated in a hostile environment, was denied privileges and was “severally assaulted physically by fellow aides”. Mr Etete claimed that some of the incidents occurred with Mr Akpabio’s knowledge.

The former lawmaker also raised concerns over a symposium on the creative economy that he coordinated to support the Senate president’s legislative agenda.

According to him, the event attracted participants from Nigeria and abroad, including resource persons who reportedly funded their own travel, accommodation and presentation materials with the expectation of reimbursement.

He alleged that more than six months after the event, the interim report had yet to receive the Senate president’s attention for legislative follow-up, and that outstanding bills submitted by service providers remained unpaid.

Mr Etete asked Mr Akpabio to approve payment of an attached bill covering expenses incurred during the symposium, arguing that settling the debts would preserve the reputation of the Senate President’s office and honour the contributions of those he described as “patriotic Nigerians”.

The former aide also claimed he mobilised over 240 support groups in Akwa Ibom State for Mr Akpabio’s ambition and President Bola Tinubu’s, but lamented that promises made to engage and appreciate the groups were not fulfilled.

In his letter, Mr Etete referenced a vow allegedly made with some political associates regarding Akpabio’s ambition before a “statue of Mary”. Mr Akpabio is a Catholic.

He said “Your Excellency, sir, each time I remember how yourself, myself, Rt. Hon Ubong Etiebet and the current Minister for State, Gas, knelt down before the statue of Mary, making a vow concerning your ambition, my heart bleeds.”

Mr Etete added, “Yet, your former Deputy Chief of Staff insisted that unless I pledged allegiance to him, the support groups and I would not be accommodated. Did we meet and make the vow at the foot of the sculpture of Christ Jesus’s real mother?”

When PREMIUM TIMES asked for clarification, Mr Etete said the vow before the statue of Mary took place at Mr Akpabio’s home in Asokoro, Abuja.

“To me, it was a chapel and not a shrine,” he said.

Mr Etete said the vow was that those who took it would not betray the Senate President and he in turn, would not betray them either.

Senate President’s office responds
When PREMIUM TIMES contacted Eseme Eyiboh, the special adviser on media and publicity to the Senate president, he said he was not aware of Mr Etete’s resignation.

“Hon Patty Ettete was my colleague in the House of Representatives and for about three years now, we have both shared mutual trust and respect as colleagues in the office of the President of the Senate. I’m not aware of his resignation as a senior legislative aide in the office,” Mr Eyiboh said.

He added that, because he was unaware of the resignation, the circumstances surrounding it were beyond his knowledge.

Mr Eyiboh, however, described the work environment within the Senate president’s office as structured and coordinated in compliance with public service rules and constitutional guarantees.

“I can attest to the robust and healthy relationship that staff members enjoy within and around the office of the President of the Senate. The office is well-structured and coordinated by experienced personnel, in substantial compliance with public service rules and protocols. Human rights in the office are subsisting within the remit of guaranteed constitutional rights,” he said.

PoliticsDangote Refinery Raises Petrol Price To ₦875 by ogododo(op): 9:28pm On Mar 02
The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has increased its Premium Motor Spirit gantry price by N101, raising the ex-depot rate from N774 to N875 per litre, heightening concerns over fresh fuel price increases across the country.

A senior official at the refinery confirmed the development to The PUNCH on Monday, noting that the adjustment followed recent volatility in global crude oil prices.

“Yes, the price has been reviewed. The new gantry price is now N875 per litre from N774. The review became necessary due to changes in global crude fundamentals and replacement costs,” the official said.

Checks by The PUNCH on petroleumprice.ng confirmed that the revised price had already been reflected, indicating a shift in downstream pricing benchmarks.

The price increase came shortly after the refinery suspended petrol loading operations effective midnight on March 2, 2026, following a sharp surge in international crude oil prices, which crossed the $80 per barrel threshold overnight.

Data obtained from industry sources showed that Premium Motor Spirit loading stopped at exactly midnight, halting product lifting and the issuance of Proforma Invoices, an indication that fresh transactions were temporarily paused.

However, the suspension applied strictly to petrol, as Automotive Gas Oil, popularly known as diesel, continued to load.

The refinery’s action also triggered a coordinated response across the downstream sector, as several private depot owners nationwide halted petrol sales during the trading day.

“Several depot owners suspended PMS sales because of the crude rally. The market is already factoring in risk premiums. Nobody wants to sell below replacement cost,” a downstream operator said.

The development comes amid heightened global oil market volatility linked to tensions between the United States and Iran, which have raised concerns about supply disruptions, particularly in the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

Five energy experts, in separate interviews with The PUNCH on Sunday, warned that Nigeria could witness further increases in petrol and diesel prices if crude oil prices climb above $90 per barrel.

They said sustained hostilities in the Middle East could disrupt global supply chains, increase shipping and insurance costs, and raise import and refining costs for products despite Nigeria’s growing local refining capacity.

PoliticsTransition Period For Direct Oil Revenue Payments Into Federation Account by ogododo(op): 2:27pm On Mar 02
Tinubu Govt Approves Transition Period For Direct Oil Revenue Payments Into Federation Account

The Nigerian Government has approved a transition period for oil contractors to begin direct remittance of petroleum revenues into the Federation Account following the implementation of Executive Order 9 signed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

President Bola Tinubu’s administration claimed that the move is aimed at tightening oversight of Nigeria’s oil earnings and preventing revenue leakages that have long plagued the petroleum sector.

The decision was reached during the inaugural meeting of the Implementation Committee on Executive Order 9 of 2026, held on February 26, 2026.

In a statement issued on Monday, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, who chairs the committee, said the transition arrangement was approved to prevent disruptions to existing contractual and financing obligations within the oil industry.

According to him, the policy seeks to ensure that revenues derived from petroleum operations, including profit oil, royalty oil and tax oil, are paid directly into the Federation Account to strengthen public finance management across federal, state and local governments.

Edun explained that while the government is determined to enforce the new payment structure, the committee agreed that implementation must be handled cautiously to preserve investor confidence.

“With respect to Section 2, Sub-section 3 of Executive Order 9 on direct payments by contractors into the Federation Account, the Implementation Committee agreed that this transition must be implemented in a manner that respects existing contractual and financing arrangements and maintains investor confidence,” he said.

He added that a defined transition period had been approved before the full operationalisation of the new remittance system.

“For this reason, the Committee approved a defined transition period for the operationalization of direct payments by contractors of profit oil, royalty oil and tax oil into the Federation Account,” Edun stated.

During the transition phase, existing payment arrangements will remain in force pending the release of detailed operational guidelines.

“Until the Committee issues detailed guidelines, contractors will continue to remit under the current process. During the transition period, the Committee will issue clear, standardised guidance to ensure an orderly changeover,” he added.

To drive implementation, the committee also approved the establishment of a technical subcommittee tasked with developing the operational framework for the transition within three weeks.

The subcommittee will also commence a review of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) to identify structural and fiscal provisions believed to weaken government revenues from petroleum operations.

“The Technical Subcommittee will develop the detailed guidelines for the transition to direct remittance within three weeks and commence a review of the Petroleum Industry Act to address structural and fiscal anomalies that weaken Federation revenues,” Edun said.

The panel will be chaired by the Special Adviser to the President on Energy, Mrs. Olu Verheijen, and will include senior officials from key institutions, including the Office of the Solicitor-General of the Federation, the Federal Ministry of Justice, the Nigeria Revenue Service, the Forum of Commissioners of Finance, and representatives of the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil). The Budget Office of the Federation will serve as secretariat.

As part of the reforms introduced under Executive Order 9, the government also directed NNPC Limited to immediately halt certain deductions under Production Sharing Contracts.

According to the committee, NNPC Limited will stop collecting a 30 per cent management fee as well as a 30 per cent frontier exploration fund deduction from profit oil and profit gas.

The order further suspends all remittances of gas flare penalties into the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund with immediate effect.

The implementation committee said the reforms are intended to ensure that revenues generated from Nigeria’s oil and gas resources are fully accounted for and paid into the Federation Account in line with constitutional provisions.

“The Committee reaffirmed the President’s directive that revenues accruing to the Federation from petroleum operations must be handled in a manner that upholds constitutional principles, protects revenues accruable to the Federation and supports the fiscal stability of all three tiers of government,” the statement added.

The committee also expressed appreciation to stakeholders across the petroleum industry and government institutions for their cooperation, noting that the reforms form part of broader efforts by the Tinubu administration to ensure Nigeria’s oil wealth translates into measurable benefits for citizens.

Politics2027: South South ADC Leaders Refute Endorsing Amaechi’s Presidential Bid by ogododo(op): 11:19am On Feb 28
The South-South Zonal Leadership of the African Democratic Congress has denied reports claiming that its national leader, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, and other regional leaders have endorsed former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi for the presidency.

Speaking on behalf of the zonal leadership, the South-South Zonal Publicity Secretary in a statement on Saturday, Mabel Oboh, described the reports as “misleading, undemocratic, and a troubling example of how selective narratives can distort political reality.”

The February 27 meeting, held at Oyegun’s residence in Benin, gathered respected party elders, senior stakeholders, and state representatives from Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, and Rivers States.

According to Oboh, the gathering was organised to strengthen internal cohesion, deepen grassroots mobilisation, and position the party strategically for future electoral contests.

“These were not casual attendees. They were seasoned political leaders, individuals with decades of experience in governance, party administration, and democratic practice.

“To suggest that such a body would casually abandon constitutional process for an informal endorsement is both inaccurate and illogical.”

During the meeting, Amaechi formally informed regional leaders of his intention to seek the party’s presidential ticket, a move Oboh described as a respectful consultation with his geopolitical zone.

“Consultation is not endorsement, and courtesy is not coronation. Receiving a prominent son of the South-South who chose to formally brief his regional leaders cannot be twisted into a declaration of support.”

Oboh emphasised that at no time, before, during, or after the meeting, was any motion moved, resolution adopted, vote taken, or consensus reached to endorse any aspirant.

She added, “The leaders did not endorse Amaechi or any other person as this will negate the principle of internal democracy.”

She further stressed that Chief Oyegun’s political history makes the allegation particularly implausible. As a former national chairman of a ruling political party and a longstanding advocate of constitutional order within party systems, Oyegun, she said, understands the weight of process and institutional discipline.

“It is inconceivable that a leader of his pedigree would undermine the very democratic structures he has spent decades strengthening,” Oboh added.

The zonal spokesperson expressed disappointment that some media houses published the endorsement narrative without thorough verification, warning that such reporting carries broader implications.

“Misinformation in political reporting does not merely mislead the public; it risks undermining democratic processes, fueling unnecessary tension within parties, and eroding confidence in institutional procedures. In a fragile political climate, responsible journalism is not optional; it is essential.”

She maintained that the ADC remains committed to internal democracy, noting that the power to nominate and elect candidates rests with constitutionally recognised organs of the party and ultimately with its members, not with a handful of leaders at a zonal consultation.

Reaffirming the unity of the South-South bloc, Oboh stated that the meeting’s true objective was structural consolidation and party growth, not premature political alignment.

“The elders of the South-South remain united, disciplined, and committed to due process. No endorsement took place. Any narrative suggesting otherwise is false and should be disregarded.”

The PUNCH reported that Amaechi took advantage of the meeting to announce his intention to run for the office of the president in next year’s election.
