Career / Re: Is It Advisable For A Fresh Graduate To Take A Job Of 5000 Naira Per Month? by ogra2k2(m): 12:50pm On Dec 01, 2006
One, I want to say congratulations for being a graduate - it isn't easy to become one.
I would have loved to know your course of study, but in the absence of that info let's continue:
Two, I believe in the principle of "Sacrifice". In life, you have to pay your dues - if not now, then later.
i also started the same way, and I know ow difficult it is to make such decisions.
I will advice that you weigh your options well. Look at the prospects of the job, what relevant experience can you get? what would be the work-life balance? would you have time to search for other opportunities?, etc.
Three, you should be able to know the difference between "Sacrificing" and "being Used" - Don't allow urself to be used!!
Finally, Pray to God to direct your path. He alone has the answer you want. We can only speculate.
Take CHARGE!!!
Cheers

Business / Re: ATM in Nigeria by ogra2k2(m): 5:35pm On Nov 02, 2006
I think there is a whole load of misconception and mis-statement of facts here!!!
Definitions
Interswitch:
A switching company that enables the interconnection of banks. It enables users transact business with banks registered under the service. Therefore, you may be able to check your UBA A/C balance on a First Bank's ATM or make payments using your debit cards. It is debit driven. More info on www.interswitchng.com.
Interswitch does not buy and deploy ATMs, please note that. They only provide the platform for interconnection. More like the Telecoms industry interconnection idea.

Banks:
Financial institutions with the financial muscles(ATMs are very expensive,  believe me) to purchase, deploy, manage, and service ATMs. They issue the ATM cards (debit cards). They manage the ATMs via the help of the manufacturers or support companies (e.g NCR, a big multinational company www.ncr.com; DPMS,that manages the Diebold range of ATMs; ATMC - check ATMC definition)

ATMC:
Acronym for ATM Consortium. A company formed by a group of banks in Nigeria to jointly deploy and manage ATMs.

Enough of definitions. There are already companies that are involved in the services, support, etc., of ATMs. One of such is NCR Nigeria. Managing of ATMs is a highly specialised field and well managed.

It is advisable if you are interested in supporting ATMs to work for one of these companies, or in the bank's ebusiness or ATM or Cards department.

I hope you get the picture now and you can put Interswitch in the right perspective.
Also note that Interswitch is a good thing that has happened to this country. Etransact also.

Responses are welcome!!
Cheers

Programming / Re: Towards A Stronger Nigerian Software Industry by ogra2k2(m): 8:53pm On Feb 17, 2006
I quite agree with your points, in addition to that i will say the problems should be nipped in the bud instead of just consoling ourselves on the great(albeit little) achievements we are making.
I seriously feel there should be a strong symbiotic relationship between the universities (and other institutions of higher learning) and the industry, so that there is a good correlation between what is produced and what is needed. Presently, the institutions are not churning out well trained computer graduates(most well trained programming graduates are made via self effort).
Sadly, some graduates have never written a computer program.
The University Curriculum should be reviewed, revised and monitored on a regular basis and there should be an interaction between on-field professionals, companies and the academia. This way extinct programing languages and curriculum will be removed and students will be made to focus on core relevant courses.
Another important issue is the issue of Research and Development, Government should bring up policies and funds for the actualisation of our common goals.
Or what do you feel,

Seun, the summary of what I'm saying is that we should get our acts together.
Programming / Towards A Stronger Nigerian Software Industry by ogra2k2(m): 4:14am On Feb 13, 2006
I read a few postings in this domain and i must say the idea that the nigerian software industry is growing is only a mirage. Do we really think we are improving? A situation whereby a so-called big software company cannot leave the "initial" stage of the software capability maturity model for years is nothing but share stagnancy and an illusion of growth.

How many companies actually write software? (Yes i know what i am saying!) Assembling software parts is not software development; i has gone far beyond that. How many write engineering softwares, how many write mission-critical ones?

How many actually write solutions? If we had solution-oriented software companies, all the non-effective,over-priced banking softwares that are being sold would make bank workers close early from work(but the reverse is the case)!!! I think the industry is filled with hungry, impatient developers(we should accept it) who are just out to exploit the market.

Consolidation, mergers, takeovers, and regulatory authorities (not the ineffiecient NCS and COANs and ISPONs, or whatever) are needed in the industry.

For how long do we continue this way, It will not profit the up-and-coming youngsters, and we'll forever complain of how hard it is to survive as software developers. Think about it!
