A COUNCIL in the eastern lndian State of Bihar has banned the use of mobile phones by women, saying the phones were debasing the second atmosphere.

Councillors claimed the use of phones encouraged women to elope. Single women are fined $130 if they are caught using a phone, married women around $20.

The ban has been put in place by Sunderbari council, which is in a Muslim-dominated area in the north east of lndia.

“It always gives us a lot of embarrassment when someone asks who has eloped this time,” said Manuwar Alam, who heads a newly-formed committee tasked with enforcing the ban.

He said the number of elopements and extramarital love affairs had risen in the past few months, with at least six girls and women fleeing their homes.

“Even married women were deserting their husbands to elope with lovers. That was shameful for us,” Alam said, adding, “So, we decided to tackle it firmly.”

A WOMAN who allegedly stomped her 92-year-old grandmother because she feared the old woman was possessed by a demon may face stiff penalties now that the victim has died.

Angela Armstrong died recently at a hospital in St. Louis Country, Mo, following the November 21 attack by her granddaughter, Rachel Armstrong.

The younger woman threw her grandmother down the stairs before stomping her, which left Angela with broken arms and eight cracked ribs.

The granddaughter confessed, police said, and was charged with first-degree elder abuse. The grandmother’s death has authorities considering stiffer charges though.

At the time of the attack, Rachel Armstrong, a nurse by trade, told police she though her grandmother was a demon and tried to beat it out of her before tucking her in bed.
