Massive explosion ripped through a warehouse full of fireworks in Nigeria's largest city (Lagos) on Wednesday, sparking a fire that threatened surrounding city blocks and sending a plume of thick smoke high into the sky. At least one person died and 15 others were wounded, emergency officials said.

The blast occurred around 9 a.m. in the Jankara area of Lagos Island, a neighbourhood of narrow streets and tall cement buildings holding shops and housing people sometimes a dozen to a room in the megacity of Lagos. The force of the explosion echoed miles away and shook windows.

BusinessBanks’ ATM Fraud by ogusbaba1(op): 5:03pm On Dec 22, 2012
Banks’ ATM fraud

IN continuation of its regulatory objectives, the Central Bank of Nigeria ordered that no bank in Nigeria should from September 13, 2012, charge N100 per withdrawal from its Automated Teller Machines (ATMs), regardless of the bank card a customer holds.

According to the CBN, the Bankers’ Committee removed the charges on interbank transactions to minimise the financial burden on bank customers and to make services friendly. It is a follow-up to the apex bank’s reform agenda of a cashless economy.

The Bankers Committee, a body of chief executive officers/managing directors of all banks operating in Nigeria, endorsed the decision and promised that the cancellation of inter-bank charges would take immediate effect.

Two weeks after, however, newspapers and the electronic media are awash with tales of customers’ complaints about the continuation of the charges on their withdrawals from ATMs not run by their banks. We consider this unwholesome and fraudulent.

According to the reports, when they approached their managers, they were given all manner of excuses. While some bank officials claimed they had not received a formal circular from the CBN, others insisted that the removal was not automatic.

We believe that even if there was to be a timeline, one week should be enough to allow the banks to reconfigure the machines for the transition. We hasten to add that integrity is the bedrock of banking, and if this is not carefully nurtured, it could be counter-productive for the sector.

We call on the CBN to beam its searchlight on erring banks and sanction them appropriately. The banks should also be made to cough out the fraudulent deductions from customers with effect from when the order was given.

Compelling them to make refunds will not only restore customers’ confidence, but also convince people about the resolve to maintain integrity in the country’s macro-economic policies.

Already, the CBN has introduced other reforms aimed at bolstering investor and customer confidence in the banking sector. With the reported recovery of N6 billion excess bank charges in the past one year, as disclosed by the CBN governor, Mallam Lamido Sanusi, last week, he needs to beef up the drive by retrieving these illegal deductions from helpless customers in the past two weeks.

It is one sure way to strengthen customer protection, achieve financial inclusion and restore credibility to CBN’s monetary policies and pronouncements. We hope that this would be done in a timely manner before useless excuses creep in.

Ndokwa people affirm support for Anioma agenda

NDOKWA people have affirmed their support for a political pressure group, Anioma Agenda, as they work towards electing an indigene of Delta North to be the next governor of Delta State in 2015.

The declaration was part of resolutions taken at a meeting of members of the Anioma Agenda group held at Kwale, Ndokwa West local government area, recently.

Addressing the meeting, the secretary general of Anioma Agenda, Mr. Godwin Ossai said the mission of the group was to become a catalyst for unity, peace and democracy in Delta State and enjoined all Deltans to support its crusade which he said was built on equity.

He enjoined the people to be steadfast for equity, fairness and justice in Delta State without fear or compromise, emphasising that the time to cement the unity of the state was now.

Ossai called for a massive build of determination as the group continues consultations with notable Deltans and other stakeholders.

He added that in the process, sensitisation and town hall meetings will be extended to Delta Central and South.

The House of Representatives on Thursday passed the 2013 budget of N4.987 trillion as against the N4.924 trillion presented by President Goodluck Jonathan.

This represents a difference of N63 billion.

It is comprised of N387.9 billion for statutory transfers, N591.7 billion for debt services.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the budget is also made up of N2.3 trillion as recurrent non-debt expenditure, N1.6 trillion for contribution to the development fund for capital expenditure for the year ending December 31, 2013.

All unutilized capital expenditure in the 2012 budget had been rolled over to form part of the 2013 Appropriation Act.

The Deputy Speaker, Mr. Emeka Ihedioha, who presided enjoined all standing committees of the House to carry out their oversight function in order to ensure full implementation of capital projects.

The spending plans assumed a 79 dollars per barrel benchmark oil price as against the 75 dollars submitted to the National Assembly by the president.

Nairaland GeneralRe: Village Bans Women From Using Mobile Phones by ogusbaba1(op): 5:15am On Dec 20, 2012
ayox2003: Whenever things go wrong in a society, women are the first target. Some cultures have made women not more than glorified nannies who just come to this world to take care of kids and die in silence. Its ridiculous!

Gender dynamics varies in each culture but its very important to note that women should not be victims of the law. Were these Indian women sleeping with cattles? Ofcourse the women were sleeping with men. Why weren't the men banned from using phones? Yes, because women are weak and easy to manipulate, abi. Shior.

Apart from culture, religion is also one big factor in this. For instance, a simple check on most Islamic nations of the world and one would see that women are subject to some "laws". They really do not have a say. For instance, Saudi Arabia, which is the "holy city" (capital) of the religion, has a law that prevents women from signing for their kids surgery. I mean, your son wants to undergo surgery and your wife is not allowed to sign the papers! Until she receives permission from a male guardian (Husband, father, brother, nephew or eldest son). Can u just imagine? Also women are not allowed to drive, partake in sports, vote during elections, work in selected places. The law also says women be given strokes of cane like men if they flout the law - sharia law. Do you know what that means? A woman simply is born to do nothing but wear aprons in the kitchen,"tamba" for pikin in the toilet and serve men. In Iran, there are courses ladies (students) are not allowed to study in the university. All because they are women, a barrier has been placed upon them. Other religions that also have such laws are causing more harm than good.

Truly, women must be allowed to achieve their dreams and use their talents. They must play their roles at home without being held in any form of bondage.

I hope this sends a message to men who believe women are "weaker vessels/dummies". We must rise above the ills of our culture and religion because women are the salt of the earth. We should let them add spice to our lives and the world at large. wink
