Hi All,
As an international student you are suppose to be a full time student but i have a question cos am in a peculiar situation.
Am doing a pre-requites for masters program in Physical therapy and i have just once course to complete it. So am left only with Mirco biology and Lab which is just a 4 credit hour course.
what should i do so i will not fall out of status or just go head and register only four credit hour and write the Sevis people or whathuh?
Advice accordingly
Thanks
You do not have to worry at all. It is allowed if all you need to graduate is just a class or few credits. Your Int'l Student Adviser knows the rules and will do the needful. All you have to care or worry yourself about at this stage is life after graduation or your post-graduation plans.

Good luck !!!!

BigFrancis,

Don't listen to your Nepalese friend ooo, he is most likely looking for a citizen to marry and get a green card now. You have to understand that most people won't tell you the truth about their immigration status. Everybody dey do him own thing coded.

How is Maryland? I should be in Bowie/Greenbelt/Lanham axis next week. I understand it is not far from College station.

Feexo: Ojap, Imperiouxx and everybody, I am in a very difficult situation and I need advice from everyone. I applied to a school as a graduate student in political science- I plan to lecture ultimately- and I got my visa. My mom was meant to sponsor me but she died in an auto crash last December. I had been speaking with a professor who indicated an interest in us working together on- International Peace-Keeping and Conflict Resolution in sub-Saharan Africa. I could not qualify for funding because I was 1.8 point short of the threshold. However, he said I would be considered for GA in my second semester if I maintain a GP of 3.0, and 'if' there were funds left. But, he was emphatic on my getting a GA in my second year. The school accepts a payment plan, and I am thinking of raising some money from some of my friends- I have less than $2k as I am typing this- to complete the first semester, and see how it pans out.
My mind is running wild... I have been staying with a female friend here in NY who is a citizen since Sunday. A friend who has a green card in Texas using a green-card said I should go to school, try and get my SSN and come to Texas. Another friend said I should just hop on the next plane and come over to Arizona, and work on getting my papers...
I am terrified of not going to school and falling out of status; my greatest ambition is getting a doctorate and lecturing
Should I send an email to the prof first?
Should I contact the appropriate person in school and ask for the least I can pay on a monthly basis for the first semester?
I don't want to stay in NY for too long. I don't wanna make a mistake and ruin the good relationship we have out of sheer desperation.
What do you guys think?
- If you have a means of getting friends to help with your first year tuition, please go for it. (since your prof. promised funding for your second year).

- If all didn't work for you and couldn't raise any funds, try as much as possible to get your state I.D any way/any how. As per SSN, you can only get that if you get an on-campus job. This is even why you need to make sure you enroll in school so you can apply for any on-campus jobs and I.D

- If I were you, I will be looking at other schools especially in those cities where you have friends or relatives. See if those schools can give funding or scholarship and transfer there. Things are usually easier if you have someone already in the US to put you through. Please be so aggressive about this.

- Yes, you can contact your school's accounts dept. and arrange for a payment plan.

Dropping out of school shouldn't be your next option since you have a sure funding for the second year. I wish you all the best.

Graviton2: What happens if the University isn't willing to release the student's SEVIS record to the CC?
That is why you have to do your home work well before applying to any school. If you know you are only using the university admission to get a visa, choose a university that has a tradition of easily transferring SEVIS, there are several of them here. The US have thousands of universities to choose from. It all requires proper planning Gravy.
TravelRe: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part5 by OjaP: 4:47pm On Aug 12, 2014
Dear All,

Please prepare well and make sure to come to America with a lot of money. Just like several people have said in the past days, it could be so tough as an international with no funding. The schools and embassies assume that you have the means to come here to study and that is why they both ask to see statement of accounts. Most people go to the embassy painting a picture of their parents sponsoring them and one would be astonished with the millions of naira in the statement of account they present to the V.Os. Sometimes, I keep wondering, and wonder if the millions in those accounts disappeared right after collecting the Visa.

That said, for undergraduates without any form of scholarships, and who can't afford enough money to attend a university, this goes to you. Please try to apply, and get a community college admission before coming here. Community colleges are cheap and you can easily transfer there and spend your first two years of college paying a cheaper tuition before going back to the university for your last 2 years. This would be so beneficial as your first 2 years would expose you to a lot of things which include meeting the right people. If you are not offered any form of scholarship as part of your admission packages; please do not come to the U.S at all expecting manna from heaven - It doesn't happen in most cases. You really have to come here with your finances well planned else you fall out of status. Life as an illegal immigrant is not what I pray anybody I know should experience; it is really tough.

For grad students who don't have the money, please make sure you get some form of funding from your school before coming. If not, make sure there is a promise you will get one before your second year in the program. Also, make sure you come for a degree that makes economic sense to the United States. You will fully understand the benefit of this by the time you graduate. I will always respect those folks on here who have decided to defer their admissions or look for a cheaper school or a community college so they can have a control of their finances in the US. Again, you guys will always earn my respect.

In any case, be well prepared financially for your first year of school in the United States. Do not let the words "hope" or "assume" be in your dictionary at all when coming here as a first timer. However, things tends to become easier the more you stay in the country. Many of us have passed through this, and many times we have gotten discouraged and wanted to give up. Many times we've had to summon up courage and keep fighting, and make sure never to derail or loose focus. The real heroes and heroines are those who despite all odds completed their studies even with good grades.

The United States is a land of opportunity where you are allowed to become what you want. There are several ways to getting a green card, and the process can be faster if you are educated. These days, most men and woman want a man/woman who is well educated and that has a great potential. Your US-born or naturalized bf/gf would take you serious or be ready to marry you if you are well educated. Your company would be ready to file for you if you are well educated and have the skills. You can file for yourself if in a PhD program or have a PhD with some publications. As you can see, all still boils down to being educated.

Life could be tough at the start in the United States but just like the sages would say; there would always be light at the end of the tunnel. Staying focused and determined are the two keys. Of course, putting GOD almighty first is the ultimate. With HIM, everything will fall in place. As a way of giving back to NL, if there is anyone coming to California and needs a place to stay before school resumes, such person should pm me as I may be able to work things out for him/her.

Good luck to everyone.

bigfrancis21: Personally, I prefer the usual paper-and-pencil paper exam as that's what I have been used to all my life so I opted for the paper GRE. I wrote the paper GRE at Aba and scored well on it.
Which menial job in US that pays minimum wage of $7.5 per hour will pay you well? How do you even compare the pay of menial jobs to the pay of white-collar jobs of between $20 to $50 an hour? Don't put the cart before the horse even before it is time to hit the road. Which menial job in america will pay you well so as to cover all as-you-know-it expenses and leave you with much change to spare on partying, enjoyment galore and shopping? You need to wake up. It is only the rich and celebrities that live such luxurious life here.
As an Igbo man, I love dealing with figures. Now let us delve into the financials.
I assume you get a job at Walmart(which is almost impossible as you have work restrictions on your visa but I will assume so for I was taught in science to make assumptions) which pays $7.5 per hour and you work 75 hours a week. Mind you, for such a low-paying salary, you'll need to work as many hours as possible as your body can permit to break even. And for such jobs, you're not paid overtime as obtained in white-collar jobs where you work 40 hours a week usually, 5 days a week, and any extra hours spent on the job is overtime and you're paid at an overtime rate of 1.5 times your hourly salry.
MONTHLY EARNINGS:
300 hours(75 hours per week times 4 weeks) * 7.5 = $2,250 per month.
Tax deduction = $350 to $400 per month. Yes, taxation here is killing. In most states you are taxed both federal and state taxes.
Other deductions such as social security benefits = $100
Take home pay: $1,750 to $1,800 per month.
EXPENSES:
1) Health insurance = $110 per month. Health care is very expensive here and almost everyone here has health insurance that covers medical bills during times of ill health.
2) Rent = average of $500 to $600 per month. I am even being generous. Some places are as high as $1,000 per month. Except you decide to put up with as many roommates as possible to split up the cost.
3) Feeding = $200 to $400 per month, that is if you cook at home. Eating outside is very costly as you spend twice/thrice of the stated figure.
4) Transportation = $100 to $200 on fuel per month on fuel if you'll be driving or on bus ticket if you'll taking the bus daily to work.
5) Light bill = $200
6) Water bill = $150
7) Miscellaneous = $100
8.) Phone bill = $50
Total expenses = $1,610
How much left = $140 to $190 in savings.

Then you remember you will have to save some money. Then relatives and friends from back home with same mindset like you will be calling you asking you to send $1,000 so that they can start enjoying life as they are 'suffering' in Nigeria, because they think that Obi is picking up dollars from the street of America. Not knowing that Obi is still struggling to have mere $1,000 as savings in his bank account. Then you think of how you'll send the very little you manage to save from your daily hardwork, sweat and energy and becoming stingy becomes your watchword.
Remember that this is the so-called menial job you envision to do which you will wrench your back doing everyday and standing on your feet 12 hours a day. You then think of your future and envision yourself doing the same recurring cycle every month in a year for the rest of your life in America, the land of opportunities and a place of 24/7 work all seasons of the year with very little rest, then you smile to yourself and tell yourself 'welcome to America. Now I understand what these people have been telling me since.'
Okay, you decide to finish school and get a 'well-paying' job in the vicinity of $70,000 per year or $5,833 pre-tax monthly salary. Fine, the job is white-collar and you are one step away from breaking your back and standing 12 hours a day. Your life is one step better than the class of menial workers. However, you are still not free from the ever-attractive recurring rat race cycle that entraps millions of employees in America that comes with heavy bills to pay every month such as house mortgage, car loans, college loans, heavy tax deductions, monthly light and water bills, phone bills, internet cable bills etc. with very little to spare in savings.
Is this your so-called glorious vision of 'being well paid'?
May GOD help us.

Domex,

I remember telling you several times here that you have red flags all around you. I told you that no reasonable company would invest in a computer operator for a BS degree abroad. There are several IT graduates even with PhDs in Nigeria that they can hire right away; this is just common sense. Sponsoring you for a master degree could be more reasonable.

I could also vividly remember you telling me that I am not the V.O and that the V.O would not look into all of that. FYI, I was particularly interested in your case at that time because you sounded promising, and I thought all you needed was just proper guidance. I have said this in the past and I am saying it again now; unless you change your sponsor to any of your family members preferably your parents, you may never, ever get your visa approved. Do not waste your money re-applying or re-packaging if this won't change. Do the right thing.

P.S: Although your answers to your course offerings were disappointing, this may still be overlooked if you'd given good points in response to questions that followed. Unfortunately, your "sponsor" denied you the visa.

Gravy,

To be on a safer side, please email ICE at sevp@ice.dhs.gov or call 703-603-3400. I suggest you email so you have a record of your correspondence with them. You may explain the situation and ask them to advice on what to do when you have a cancelled SEVIS record, and no POE data.

Tell them your school refused to defer your admission and issue another I-20 because you can not attend school this semester any longer. Reason may be that you have to take care of pressing family issues which may include taking care of your sick sponsor or any other convincing reasons you can think of. The US don't play with family at all and I am sure you will get a positive response.

Ask if you can use the same visa to enter the USA if you get another school's I-20 since your former school won't be cooperating with you. Whatever they say is what you should follow. I am confident of a positive reply.

Gravy,

Can you also email your school and tell them they have no reason to deny you deferment? Quote the link below and tell them you will contact ICE about it if any action is not taken.

Certificate of Eligibility Form SEVIS I-20: This is a three page document issued by Fordham, which describes the nature and expected duration of your program, your financial resources, and other information. It has a SEVIS ID number on it which lets Immigration identify you are the correct person. Form I-20 permits one to apply for an F-1 visa stamp and to request F-1 (student) status upon entry to the US.

Immigration regulations require that you attend the school that issues you the SEVIS I-20 you use to enter the U.S. DO NOT use another school's I-20 to enter the U.S. if you intend to study at Fordham. HOWEVER, YOU COULD USE OUR I-20 WITH A VALID F-1 VISA ISSUED BASED ON ANOTHER SCHOOL'S I-20.

Teddy and Idawbawz

It is obvious that both of you like each other but one of you felt so disappointed in one way or the other. While it is good to fight sometimes if you feel bad or cheated by a good friend, one should also take caution in cursing the other person out. This is something you guys can settle without coming on here at all.

Amerinancy and Zeezahbee, I know you guys are so dear to these two men. As it is now, I believe only the two of you can talk to them to sheathe their swords and become the good friends that they used to be. Personally, I think all these going back and forth is unnecessary. You guys are all friends and I would expect you to solve these issues amicably.

Let peace reign and let us not look down on anybody because no one knows tomorrow. The Visa is only a stepping stone, we still have a long way to go and we all need each other.

God bless America.
