University academics in the UK are working on a solar-powered water purification system that could improve access to clean drinking water for millions of people in the developing world. Teesside University's School of Health and Life Sciences is working with counterparts in South Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on the technology. The new system will provide a "portable and affordable way" of purifying and removing pollutants from water. Scientists said the initiative marked a "pivotal moment". The DRC is one of Africa’s most water-rich countries, yet millions of people lack access to clean water. This project, which has received £300,000 from the Royal Society’s International Science Partnerships Fund (ISPF), proposes using tiny particles, known as nanomaterials and nanotechnology processes, coupled with solar energy to purify water. It will be led by Dr Ojodomo Achadu, a Nigerian-born UK-based academic at Teesside University, together with Dr Muthumuni Managa from the University of South Africa (UNISA), and Prof Christian Nkanga from the Universite de Kinshasa in DRC. The project proposes using methods to remove chemicals and pathogens from water in a single step process that can be operated in both households and fields. Dr Achadu said: “Receiving this grant award is an incredible honour which reflects the excellent academic track records and research leadership of the team." Prof Nkanga said the project has "user-friendliness at its core" and will have "a major impact, empowering communities to access water they need to dramatically improve their living conditions and thrive". As cholera rages in Nigeria and some other African countries due to shortage of clean water and good sanitation facilities in the affected areas, a Nigerian-born Dr. Ojodomo Achadu of Teesside University, UK, is leading a ground-breaking research team developing solar-powered water purification for the developing world. This innovation, in collaboration with South African and Democratic Republic of Congo, DRC experts, has the potential to revolutionize access to clean water in Africa, improving the lives of millions. Clean water, a cornerstone of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, remains out of reach for billions. By 2050, the World Meteorological Association predicts up to 5 billion people may lack safe water. This crisis hits Africa particularly hard. Despite abundant water resources, millions consume contaminated water, jeopardizing their health and well-being. Innovative solutions for clean water and sanitation are crucial for Africa and the world, and Dr Achadu, a highly credentialed nanotechnology researcher, spearheads this innovation. I remember being in your position many years ago. I originally planned to study Chemical Engineering, but I was admitted to study Chemistry. I attempted to switch after graduating via a similar route - PGD, Masters, but was cautioned against it. I stayed with Chemistry and earned a PhD. Today, I'm an Assistant Professor of Chemistry in the UK. If you want to ply your trade abroad, you can change, but if not, stick with Chemistry and get your Master's in it. NB: A classmate actually switched, but hardly regarded as a Chem. Eng due to his foundation degree (Chemistry). This is mostly the case in Nigeria. |
Pls kindly ignore both of them. Find a way to politely not get your mom too involved in your family affairs. If your wife wants to stay married to you, she needs to at least "pretend" to like your mother. Get hold of your wife! Mum has issues, ok! But your wife compounds the whole issue. |
OP, how did you get this one in the photo? I have been looking for how to get this book format type. Plastic type not accepted in Japan |

You've said it all. Small pikin still dey worry this one. Pls try to hold on until you're 40+ and let's see if all these"I am fine, intelligent etc will still hold. BTW, to say you're intelligent means you not! You just think you are. Ladylite: |
No rules. I was in a similar situation too. I already got my suit (cool blue) from SA, and my best man has new black suit. We just wore the same colour of bow ties, different from the men in suit, that's all. Just for few hours he is combing the whole of Mandilas/Lagos. Let him just buy two new suits of same colour na if he is really serious! |

Oluwasegun664:How much is the handling fee and the SA Rands equivalent (if acceptable), I might be able to help you, and then we trade in Naira. |
@YZME2001, I applied for lecturer 2 and was notified that I ve been shortlisted for interview n not apt. test. I haven't got any invite for the interview neither has any1 in my cadre. Have not been to Gashua. |
hello house, who has any info regarding the likely dates for academic staff interview (Lecturers II and above) |
I got my study visa today @ the Abuja SA high commission. Want to thank you guys (@ chemasie, TYPOP, samtol4 etc) for your help and useful guide. Thank you guys! |
TYPOP:@TYPOP can you clarify further on how I can use my ATM card to pay for the SAQA fee. Also, can I scan or fax my certified docs with d payment receipt to anyone in SA to submit for me at SAQA's office? |

TYPOP: My replies are in your question, boldned.. Thanks TYPOP. Your response couldn't have been anymore timely. Cheers! |
@ TYPOP, Samtol4 and other nairalanders. Your contributions on this tread have been of immense help, and truth is u dont know what good you are doing to naija visa applicants. Now I still need your help. I was at the SA high commission in Abuja today to submit my application for a study visa (PhD @ Rhodes). The first question the lady asked me was "do you have SAQA". It then dawn on me that this no SAQA thing in ABJ is gone or no more. I need to know how to go about this SAQA stuff bearing the following in mind: Am I to send just certified copies of my credentials (at this level do I need to add my O'level)? Are my transcripts required or just certified copies of certificates obtained? Can I do funds transfer through Form A or credit card (MC), if not, what other easier methods? Do I have to pay for the evaluation before sending the docs since proof of payment is required? |
