Guy just sit down relax and evaluate what you want…cause taking a course you don’t like is not an option…just follow your heart, Both are not bad chemistry or Chemical engineering….

There is a difference between the and u will not go deep? Oga shift jare. Who beg u to go deep? Since u know u will not explain the difference between the two, then why quoting me, telling me that there is a difference between them?

Since u know there is a difference between the two, then u should explain so that everyone will understand and the op himself will also understand from it. Not telling me there is difference between them but u will not go deep.

Good evening guys. I'm sorry for the long story. But it's serious Please
Please I need ur opinions on this issue bothering me. I am a Industrial chemistry graduate. I graduated last year and just completed my NYSC. I want to go for postgraduate studies but I am having difficulties in making a decision on what to do.

Someone advised me to switch to Chemical engineering, (this will require a 1 year postgraduate diploma course) though I wouldn't mind if there's a guarantee I stand a very good chance in the labour market after the PGD and MSC. On the other hand, 2 bros in my area I respect so much discouraged me about switching. Both of them were of the opinion that it would rather keep me confused instead of helping me. That recruiters will consider a candidate with B.Eng Chemical engineering without a masters over me, while chemistry field will consider a chemistry msc holder over me also.
Bottom line, it's almost a waste of time especially here in Nigeria that I should just do msc in industrial chemistry.

I'm still young though. I Will be 22 on 27th of this month.

How good were you in Physical Chemistry?

If you want to find relevance... Go and pick a Masters form in Physical Chemistry, you stand a better Chance in Industry, Lecturing and research field.

No Job is streamlined for Industrial Chemist in Nigeria, but you have a lot jobs for Pure (Physical) Chemist both in Nigeria and abroad...

They are mostly part of R & D teams.

Choose a course to study based on PASSION, NOT BASED ON LABOR MARKET, NOT BASED ON ABROAD. WHAT DO YOU WANT OUT OF LIFE? AFTER 10 YEARS DOWN THE LANE, WOULD YOU STILL LIKE THE COURSE? JOB OR NO JOB, WOULD STILL BE FULFILLED WITH YOUR COURSE, CAN YOU USE THE KNOWLEDGE GAINED FROM THE COURSE CREATE EMPLOYMENT FOR YOURSELF? WOULD YOU HAVE FUN READING THIS COURSE? GO OFFLINE THINK ABOUT THESE!

You probably ain't back in Nigeria. That transition is a though one and can weigh him down if he is not a resilient person.

I work in Nigeria. I know guys who started in procurement and have turned out to be sound engineers. Again it's a function of your work ethic, ability to adapt and of course innate intelligence.

Chemical Engineering is a lot broader and appealing to a larger spectrum in society.

Explore the options you have in chemistry. HR people are the most ignorant and confused set of people. Even if you finally get a PhD in Chem Engr, job adverts will ask daft question like, if your first degree is in Engr? If they are recruiting for industry X, do you have experience in industry X as if chemicals are not universal with properties that can be studied and mastered.
Check online, many foreign schools are looking for competent chemists.Good luck bro.

With your good knowledge of chemistry (plus physics), write Jamb again and fill Medicine and Surgery. Choose a school like Niger Delta University, Bayesla State.

Please tell us the outcome of your choice

I remember being in your position many years ago. I originally planned to study Chemical Engineering, but I was admitted to study Chemistry. I attempted to switch after graduating via a similar route - PGD, Masters, but was cautioned against it. I stayed with Chemistry and earned a PhD. Today, I'm an Assistant Professor of Chemistry in the UK.
If you want to ply your trade abroad, you can change, but if not, stick with Chemistry and get your Master's in it.
NB: A classmate actually switched, but hardly regarded as a Chem. Eng due to his foundation degree (Chemistry). This is mostly the case in Nigeria.

Chemistry
Industrial chemistry
Applied chemistry
Chemical Engineering

All na fluke.Where are the jobs?

I advise you stick to MSc. Analytical Chemistry or any other field of choice within chemistry space.

That way, even when Lecturing offer opens, you fit in perfectly.

Ultimately brother think of what you can do with your hands to spin money for yourself.

Na the koko be that.

They are actually different.
It is called chemical engineering for a reason.

I am a graduate chemical engineer trainee in a manufacturing industry currently, and there are numerous job opportunities for chemical engineers in Nigeria here.

Chemical engineers are more into process design. You can see chemical engineering as a combination of mechanical engineering and industrial chemistry.

For instance, a chemist can react some chemicals in the lab to get a desired product that is very valuable, but reproducing such a process on a large scale involves engineering (process design).

The chemical engineer is involved but not limited to the material and energy balances for the entire process. How much raw materials is needed to achieve a set production rate while also maximizing energy requirements to minimize the cost of production?

This is just a simple difference between a chemist and a chemical engineer.

Do not do it. I repeat, do not do it if your goal is to stand a good chance of getting a job.

Switch from Chemistry to Health Sciences instead.

Your background in Chemistry should give you a foundation for Health Sciences. You are already familiar with chemical composition, you can easily understand drugs. For you to have graduated Chemistry, you must have drawn so many molecular diagrams, therefore, you will be able to handle diagrams in Health Sciences.

Chemical Engineering is a different thing entirely. If you had studied Chemical Engineering, your mindset will be different from a Chemistry graduate. Where you would have been applying to work by now will be different. Your approach to the job market will be different. You cannot switch now. You will just be a black sheep lost in the crowd. Pick Health Sciences instead.
Are you serious about this??
I'm a graduate of Pure and Applied chemistry though.

To start with, I have Bsc industrial chemistry, MTech analytical environmental chemistry and PhD analytical chemistry (at age 30). Please don't try it as it will disrupt your career path. Worst of all, if you go into academics, you will become an academic orphan, chemist will not recognize you, likewise engineers.
Let me tell you about a lecturer I know very well. He has Bsc and msc in chemistry. His only offense is going to study chemistry at pharmaceutical department in Japan, he was denied HOD of chemistry, another lecturer in same department, same sch, Bsc chemistry, msc chemistry but PhD textile was also denied.
ADVICE: it's not your course that makes you rich its packaging. Even if it IRS or CRK, maintain your lane and become a specialist in your field. Finally, do you know who a specialist is?
A specialist is someone who knows alot about very LITTLE. Go and learn alot about very little(chemistry)

A pgd is just dipping their toes.

They will need to do a masters too.

And they should not dare enter reaction kinetics, or transport phenomena, or mass transfer as a focus especially for those that want to do a PhD.

They will fail.

They should just stick to their sub-specialities relating to their bachelors.

I will advise you to change to Chemical Engineering though it won't be easy.

Both fields are very related but studying professional courses helps a lot in this our country.

If you are in the Engineering field you will surely have the upper hand more than your colleagues in the pure section.

And about changing to health sciences, One thing about chemical engineering is that you can work in any section be it engineering relations or health sciences.
A chemical engineer can work in a hospital, pharmacy, clinic, oil and gas company, refinery, paint production company, food and beverage and lots more.

You have a lot of opportunities you can even start your career on

I think you are on the right path, learn your essentials like maths, physics, and communication language, then practice in the field. Chemical engineering is a path of the future.

What many Nigerians and Africans don't know is that, more natural resources are being found everyday, and it is becoming clear to everyone that 95% of africa especially Nigeria and Congo, are covered and deep with a lot of resources. Resources for present and future technologies. Some Nigerians are aware of this. The scavenging from developed countries on Africa has already been going on for hundreds of years, and ithat ideology is being
renewed, because new technologies are looking possible due to consistent research.

Africa, especially Nigeria, are now knowing that they are the plug of world advancements. 90% of physical drone materials are mined in Africa, Niger to be exact, and even central African republic, recently, more concentrated materials were found in more countries including Nigeria. The lists are endless, space materials, energy production and containment or convertors; many airlines, oil and gas industries, building materials, agriculture, etc even the gases and materials that can absorb nuclear problems, electronic materials, etc.

Other people have researched and are using the resources at will, they have noticed we have no Patriots and knowledge, so the thieving are managed by the rest. they are sharing African countries to the city and town levels, and still taking resources. Africans don't have the knowledge to safely explore their continent and countries, to bring riches. Turkey, India, china, developed countries are Sharing the countries on a city/town level. New stealth materials, new machines, etc

Long story short, Nigeria needs an educated people of experts and willing leaners. people like your careers will be essential. People I know are making money and some are trying to make money, but overall, everybody is waiting for the next election; after the election, and the leaders are smart, have a long term view, and steady fair laws; Nigeria and Africa would go into a building spree for the next 20 years, so it will be wise for you to position right.

Good luck.

There are plenty useless courses on Nigeria universities, chemical engineering is one of them.

We are not a technologically driven economy and hence there are no opportunities for them.

I will advice you to look for how to cross to administration. If you can do accounting, it will be better as accountants are the one who controls operations in most organisations and there are lots of opportunities.

From procurement, HR, Administration, Logistics, Facility Management, Etc.

Goodluck

Pls Stay on Chemistry.. You will thank me later in years to come. Try moving to US for your masters.. Chemist job is every where in the US.I will equally advice you to get minimum of 1 or two years industrial experience in Naija before coming to the US. Your experience + Master degree will pave way for getting a good job. There are jobs for chemist without experience thou. But with your little experience you will be able to negotiate good pay.. There are companies you won't imagine that employ chemist in the US.

Partly or fully scholarship is readily available for Post Graduate degrees. Just take your time and search them out.
